In this episode, I'm diving into a topic that comes up all the time with my clients and listeners: vaping and nicotine addiction in adults with ADHD. I'm joined by Dr. Marc Picot—GP, health coach, former vaper, and founder of Vape Escape—who brings both clinical expertise and lived experience to this conversation. Together, we unpack why ADHD brains are especially vulnerable to nicotine, how vaping can feel like self-medication, and what's really happening with dopamine, focus, and emotional regulation behind the scenes.Dr. Marc also shares practical, compassionate insights for anyone who's tried to quit (and maybe relapsed more than once), including what withdrawal can look like for ADHDers, how vaping can interfere with ADHD medication, and why shame has no place in the quitting process. Whether you're thinking about quitting, actively trying, or supporting someone who is, this episode is packed with clarity, validation, and hope—without judgment or quick fixes.Dr. Marc Picot is a vaping cessation expert, GP (family physician), health coach, and former vaper. After becoming addicted to vaping during a period of depression, he turned his personal experience into a passion for helping others quit. He is the founder of Vape Escape, a digital support service for people struggling with vaping addiction, and the author of The Last Puff. Dr. Marc now works with individuals worldwide, combining medical expertise with compassionate, practical guidance to support long-term recovery from nicotine dependence. Episode Highlights:[0:36] – Welcoming Dr. Marc Picot and why vaping is such a big issue for adults with ADHD [1:52] – The brain chemistry connection: dopamine, norepinephrine, and ADHD [4:58] – Vaping as self-medication and why it “works” in the short term [7:02] – How nicotine peaks and crashes worsen ADHD symptoms over time [8:29] – Why vaping can make ADHD medication feel less effective [11:06] – Dr. Marc's personal story: depression, withdrawal, and fear of relapse [12:57] – Different ways to quit: cold turkey vs. gradual nicotine reduction [18:45] – Cravings, dopamine, and finding healthier pattern interrupts [22:39] – What the first week without vaping is really like [26:01] – Relapse, shame, and why most people don't quit on the first try [29:37] – Common mistakes when quitting and the power of education [32:07] – Dr. Marc's book The Last Puff and who it's for [33:59] – Final advice for ADHDers struggling with vaping Links & ResourcesVape Escape: https://vapeescape.org.ukThe Last Puff by Dr. Marc PicotThank you for tuning into "SuccessFULL with ADHD." How Datawizz discovered the chasm between AI-mature companies and everyone else shaped their ICP | Iddo Gino

Datawizz is pioneering continuous reinforcement learning infrastructure for AI systems that need to evolve in production, not ossify after deployment. After building and exiting RapidAPI—which served 10 million developers and had at least one team at 75% of Fortune 500 companies using and paying for the platform—Founder and CEO Iddo Gino returned to building when he noticed a pattern: nearly every AI agent pitch he reviewed as an angel investor assumed models would simultaneously get orders of magnitude better and cheaper. In a recent episode of BUILDERS, we sat down with Iddo to explore why that dual assumption breaks most AI economics, how traditional ML training approaches fail in the LLM era, and why specialized models will capture 50-60% of AI inference by 2030. Topics Discussed Why running two distinct businesses under one roof—RapidAPI's developer marketplace and enterprise API hub—ultimately capped scale despite compelling synergy narratives The "Big Short moment" reviewing AI pitches: every business model assumed simultaneous 1-2 order of magnitude improvements in accuracy and cost Why companies spending 2-3 months on fine-tuning repeatedly saw frontier models (GPT-4, Claude 3) obsolete their custom work The continuous learning flywheel: online evaluation → suspect inference queuing → human validation → daily/weekly RL batches → deployment How human evaluation companies like Scale AI shift from offline batch labeling to real-time inference correction queues Early GTM through LinkedIn DMs to founders running serious agent production volume, working backward through less mature adopters ICP discovery: qualifying on whether 20% accuracy gains or 10x cost reductions would be transformational versus incremental The integration layer approach: orchestrating the continuous learning loop across observability, evaluation, training, and inference tools Why the first $10M is about selling to believers in continuous learning, not evangelizing the category GTM Lessons For B2B Founders Recognize when distribution narratives mask structural incompatibility: RapidAPI had 10 million developers and teams at 75% of Fortune 500 paying for the platform—massive distribution that theoretically fed enterprise sales. The problem: Iddo could always find anecdotes where POC teams had used RapidAPI, creating a compelling story about grassroots adoption. The critical question he should have asked earlier: "Is self-service really the driver for why we're winning deals, or is it a nice-to-have contributor?" When two businesses have fundamentally different product roadmaps, cultures, and buying journeys, distribution overlap doesn't create a sustainable single company. Stop asking if synergies exist—ask if they're causal. Qualify on whether improvements cross phase-transition thresholds: Datawizz disqualifies prospects who acknowledge value but lack acute pain. The diagnostic questions: "If we improved model accuracy by 20%, how impactful is that?" and "If we cut your costs 10x, what does that mean?" Companies already automating human labor often respond that inference costs are rounding errors compared to savings. The ideal customers hit differently: "We need accuracy at X% to fully automate this process and remove humans from the loop. Until then, it's just AI-assisted. Getting over that line is a step-function change in how we deploy this agent." Qualify on whether your improvement crosses a threshold that changes what's possible, not just what's better. Use discovery to map market structure, not just validate hypotheses: Iddo validated that the most mature companies run specialized, fine-tuned models in production. The surprise: "The chasm between them and everybody else was a lot wider than I thought." This insight reshaped their entire strategy—the tooling gap, approaches to model development, and timeline to maturity differed dramatically across segments. Most founders use discovery to confirm their assumptions. Better founders use it to understand where different cohorts sit on the maturity curve, what bridges or blocks their progression, and which segments can buy versus which need multi-year evangelism. Target spend thresholds that indicate real commitment: Datawizz focuses on companies spending "at a minimum five to six figures a month on AI and specifically on LLM inference, using the APIs directly"—meaning they're building on top of OpenAI/Anthropic/etc., not just using ChatGPT. This filters for companies with skin in the game. Below that threshold, AI is an experiment. Above it, unit economics and quality bars matter operationally. For infrastructure plays, find the spend level that indicates your problem is a daily operational reality, not a future consideration. Structure discovery to extract insight, not close deals: Iddo's framework: "If I could run [a call where] 29 of 30 minutes could be us just asking questions and learning, that would be the perfect call in my mind." He compared it to "the dentist with the probe trying to touch everything and see where it hurts." The most valuable calls weren't those that converted to POCs—they came from people who approached the problem differently or had conflicting considerations. In hot markets with abundant budgets, founders easily collect false positives by selling when they should be learning. The discipline: exhaust your question list before explaining what you build. If they don't eventually ask "What do you do?" you're not surfacing real pain. Avoid the false-positive trap in well-funded categories: Iddo identified a specific risk in AI: "You can very easily run these calls, you think you're doing discovery, really you're doing sales, you end up getting a bunch of POCs and maybe some paying customers. So you get really good initial signs but you've never done any actual discovery. You have all the wrong indications—you're getting a lot of false positive feedback while building the completely wrong thing." When capital is abundant and your space is hot, early revenue can mask product-market misalignment. Good initial signs aren't validation if you skipped the work to understand why people bought. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. Access the same single-asset multifamily and industrial deals Lightstone pursues with its own capital – Lightstone co-invests a minimum of 20% in each deal alongside individual investors like you. You're an institution. Time to invest like one. _____________  This Episode is also sponsored by Ryze Health Every minute counts in medicine—so why waste it on clunky admin work? Jonathan shares the firm's vertically integrated model (25K apartments, 12M sq ft industrial, 5K hotel keys), why they commit 20% of their own capital first (5-10x industry norms), and how physicians can diversify beyond stocks or DIY rentals. He breaks down direct vs. passive CRE, asset class pitfalls (office flops vs. industrial wins), and red flags like inexperienced managers or 85% debt. With examples like their Greenville industrial deal, Jonathan proves alignment and conviction drive better outcomes empowering busy doctors to build legacy wealth safely.  If you're a high-income physician eyeing real estate for tax efficiency and passive income, this is your guide to investing like institutions without the headaches. Three Actionable Takeaways:   Decide direct vs. passive: If time-strapped, skip hands-on rentals for platforms like Lightstone Direct, vet managers on track record, cycles navigated, and skin in game (aim for 20%+). Passive reduces risks like tenant concentration; focus on assets like industrial for steady returns over volatile office or retail. Qualify and evaluate: As accredited (200K/300K income or 1M net worth), request decks/PPMs/operating agreements. Ask: Debt levels? Exit strategies? Risk mitigation? Compare projected IRRs realistically—avoid 20%+ promises tied to high leverage. Prioritize alignment where sponsors invest heavily first for shared incentives. The Trouble with Targeting in Business

Top Secrets

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 16, 2025 13:10

The trouble with targeting in business is that a lot of people don’t do it well. It reminds me of that line from one of the Godfather movies where Michael Corleone says something along the lines of, “if history has taught us nothing else, it’s that you can get to anybody.” Right? And that is now true in terms of advertising. You can get to anybody, but what is the cost? David: Hi, and welcome to the podcast. In today’s episode, co-host Jay McFarland and I discuss the trouble with targeting. Welcome back Jay. Jay: Hey, David, once again, I’m excited to be here and I’m really excited to get your feedback on this, because when you first said we’re going to talk about the trouble with targeting, I kind of thought in my head, well, isn’t that what I’m supposed to be doing? Aren’t, aren’t I supposed to be targeting? David: Oh yeah. Yeah. We definitely have to target. We definitely need to target. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with targeting. The trouble with targeting that I was thinking about is that a lot of people don’t do it, and a lot of the people who do do it maybe don’t do it as well as it can be done, and as a result, they don’t get the results they’re looking for. Some people think they’re targeting and they may be doing that, but if you’re not targeting to the point where it’s resulting in better quality prospects, better quality clients, and conversations that lead to sales, then you might need to hone in a little bit better in terms of your targeting efforts and your targeting approach. Jay: Yeah, so as I think about targeting, there’s a lot of work to be done upfront, right? If you’re going to target somebody, you’ve got to know who the target is. And that can take a lot of research on your own part. A lot of experimentation, a lot of looking at past contacts, how those contacts came into your funnel, and understand those things before shooting arrow in different directions. The odds that you’re going to hit anything that looks like a target are pretty slim. David: Exactly. And I think a lot of the reason for that is, many people think of the term targeting in terms of what you said, targeting’s like aiming at something. But it’s not just aiming at something, it’s having an idea in advance of what it is that you want to hit. And if we think in terms of some of the more common ways of targeting. Some people don’t even get this specific about it. But if you look at the different ways to target, I mean some people target geographically, I’m going to target everybody within a certain geographic area. If I’m a realtor and I’m working in a particular neighborhood… Great example of geographic targeting. Some people target by industry. If I’m selling B2B, I might target a particular group of people in a particular industry. I might target companies that deal with technical kind of things, or I might target education, or I might target finance, right? So that’s a different way to target, by industry. I can target by need if I’m selling something like whatever, insurance, and I’m targeting people who need insurance. Okay. They could be wherever they are. Now, it’s harder to do that when you target by need because so many people might need it and you might have to pare things down a little bit to be able to get to the people that you want. In the promotional products industry, where I do a lot of work, people can sell by program specialty. In other words, people who are looking for a specific result. If you’re selling to people who are looking to increase safety in the workplace, then you could potentially be selling them a safety campaign, a safety program. There are some people who target by product specialty. There are different companies who might be looking for a specific kind of product. There is a company that’s been in the promotional products industry for ages. You’ve probably received pens from them in the mail, and they’ve been doing that for years. There’s a cover letter. Very often the pen will have your company name on it, and they’ll send that to you in advance. And then there was just a sheet of paper and a place where you could say, all right, if I want 200 of these, I send a check, I mail it in. And that was an example of targeting by product. So you can have a very successful business that does just that, right? Targeting by a particular product. And then some combination thereof. I could target a particular niche, a particular group of people. I could target financial institutions within a certain geographic area, or I could target a certain type of industry with a specific need. So, industrial companies that need safety programs. So lots of different ways to slice it, but if you don’t think through your options, then a lot of your targeting can just leave you confused. Jay: Yeah, absolutely. But I think it’s important to know, I mean, never in the history of the planet, have we had the ability to target like you can today. If you know what you’re looking for, you talked about geographic areas, age groups, people who listen to a particular radio station, people who shop at a particular store. Never in our history has there been the ease and ability to target people. There are people whose profession, and think about this, their profession is SEO, search engine optimization. That’s all they do is they look at your company, and who your targets are, and they figure out how to reach that specific group. I think about what we did 20 years ago for targeting, and I’m like, how did we even do that? I think part of the problem is that a lot of people are just going in and they’re kind of faking it until they make it. SEO is complicated and you have to first know your target, your needs, and then you have to know how to turn that into keywords and other things. It’s a real process, real powerful, but a real difficult process many times. David: Right. And when you’re talking about something specific like that, like SEO, yeah, it’s really a specialty. And even targeted advertising, if you’re looking for a certain group of people on Facebook or whatever, you’re right, it’s easier than ever to target those people with paid advertising. But for salespeople who are in the field who aren’t doing SEO, and they’re not doing targeted ads, and they’re looking for prospects, looking for people to sell to, and still, to some extent, having to do it rather manually, then at least having a clear idea of who you’re after gives you a much better chance at potentially reaching some of those people. Jay: Oh yeah. And we talked about this in the last podcast. If you know who to target, you’re not making a hundred calls today. Maybe you’re making 20 calls today and you’re increasing your close rate. It is hard for me to think, you know, that there are still so many people out there picking up a phone and dialing it and cold calling. David: Mm-hmm. Jay: But it is still a regular part of businesses everywhere and it’s a successful part and can be successful. But if you don’t know who to target, you’re going to be wasting a lot of time. David: Right. Which brings us back to the title, the Trouble With Targeting. If you’re not doing it well, no matter how you’re doing it, whether you’re trying to do it with SEO or paid ads. Because there are people who really want to get the paid ads thing dialed in, and many of them are still spending enormous amounts of money to make that work. And as the algorithms get smarter, theoretically it gets easier, but it also then becomes more expensive because more people are doing it, which drives the costs up. So even those who now understand that, yeah, you can probably reach pretty much anyone you want to reach with targeted ads you might not be able to afford to do. It reminds me of that line from one of the Godfather movies where Michael Corleone says something along the lines of, if history has taught us nothing else, it’s that you can get to anybody. Right? And that is now true in terms of advertising. You can get to anybody, but what is the cost? What’s the cost in time? What’s the cost in money? And are you going to be able to do it? So a lot of that has to do with what you’re charging for your product, what your profit margins are. If it costs you a couple hundred dollars to acquire a new customer, you have to make sure that whatever it is that you’re selling them provides enough of an adequate profit margin to cover the cost of the product, to cover the cost of the salesperson, the overhead, and whatever the advertising is. So as long as the math works, you’re in great shape. Jay: And not just the math. I was thinking as you were talking about this, let’s say you set it up right. You figured out who to target, you’ve got your keywords in, or whatever your advertising method is going to be, and you have actually reached the face of your target. Well, what if your ad doesn’t appeal to them at all? So you’ve managed to hit your target, but it just bounced off of them because you didn’t have the right message. David: Yep. Jay: And that’s a problem we see a lot with SEO, with cold calling. Are you saying the right message? And I know when it comes to SEO, that’s why you do A/B testing, right? You send out two different versions of the same ads, see which ones resonate, see which ones don’t. And you have to keep track of that regardless of what your effort is. Because man, it’s really sad if you have managed to figure out how to reach that target, but you didn’t manage to figure out how to get them interested. That’s a real waste of time and money. David: Right, because you may not even know that you reached that person if the messaging’s off. This really all goes back to something we talked about in a podcast quite a while ago, the MVPs of marketing and sales. What’s the message that you’re communicating? Which combination of marketing vehicles are you going to use to communicate the message? And who are the people or prospects that you need to reach? So if you’re getting to the right people, people who could be doing business with you, and you’re reaching them through a marketing vehicle that gets to them, like SEO or like paid ads, and your messaging is off, the only thing you’re going to do, the only thing you’ll succeed in doing is alienating those people faster. You got to get those three things dialed in or you’re toast. Jay: Yeah, one chance sometimes. Now, the other part of that is we know sometimes you have to get in front of their face six or seven times before they will actually call you. But it needs to be six or seven times where you are resonating. If it’s six or seven times with a message that they can’t stand. I mean, I think about the Super Bowl. And some commercials are hilarious and some are terrible. And they’ve spent all that money on that one spot that for the next three months, I see that exact same commercial over and over and over again. And if it’s a bad commercial and I hated it the first time? I’m going to hate it even more the second or the third or the fourth or fifth time. So I mean, did that money, did those millions of dollars really work for them or not? David: Right. And what do I think of the company? What do I think of what they’re selling? Because there are some places that have advertising that’s annoying. But if I like the place, if I’ve had a good experience, I will very likely continue to spend money with them. And I might say to them, “Hey, your ad is terrible.” But on the other hand, if I’m not familiar with the place and the advertising alienates me, then the likelihood that I’m even going to give them a try is pretty much slim to none. Jay: Yeah, I totally agree with you. I like the title, the Trouble with Targeting. Everybody listening, is probably doing some type of targeting, but have you really taken the time to assess who your target is? How are you going to get to them? And when you do get to them, are you going to have the right messaging? And if you haven’t looked at each of those three steps at the very least, then your system is probably going to fall down. David: Exactly. And ultimately the better we target, the more money we will very likely make, as long as we have the qualification procedures in place as well. But that’s a subject for another podcast. Jay: Yeah, absolutely. How can people find out more, David? David: Well, you can go to TopSecrets.com/call. That’s TopSecrets.com/call. If you’re having trouble with your targeting, if you can’t seem to get to the people that you need to reach, let’s have a conversation. We’ll figure it out. In this episode, I sit down with my friend and client, Connor P. Coleman—a ranch management consultant, entrepreneur, and Enviropreneur Fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. Connor has one of the most fascinating blends of passions: land management, environmental problem-solving, and navigating life and business with ADHD. From childhood memories of kindergarten “Candy Land punishment” to building a thriving consulting business in the mountains of Colorado, Connor opens up about how ADHD has shaped his work, well-being and success. We explore the highs, lows, and turning points that pushed him to embrace systems, routines, delegation, and self-advocacy. Connor shares what burnout taught him, how he finally built a support team, and what shifting from “contractor” to true CEO looks like for a neurodivergent mind. His insight and honesty will resonate with anyone who's ever felt overextended, misunderstood, or unsure how to scale their brilliance.Entrepreneur attempting to do good, better Connor P. Coleman is an amateur philosopher and aspiring polymath based in the mountains of Colorado. Diagnosed with ADHD at an early age, he struggled to keep up in school, but through grit and determination, he was able to navigate college and graduate school successfully. Nearly a decade ago, he founded a ranch management advisory firm that serves conservation-minded landowners nationwide. These days, Connor relies more on systems and habits than pure grit to advance his mission.  Episode Highlights:[0:33] – Introducing Connor and his work in ranch management and wildfire-risk solutions [1:14] – What it means to be an Enviropreneur Fellow at Stanford [2:16] – The ADHD-entrepreneur connection and Connor's early path to business [2:44] – Childhood signs of inattentive ADHD and the infamous Candy Land memory [5:52] – How early school experiences shaped Connor's work-reward patterns [8:50] – The impact of having a parent in the medical field and receiving an early diagnosis [10:02] – School accommodations, testing struggles, and how support changed everything [13:04] – Academic Decathlon, discovering intelligence beyond test scores [15:29] – Transitioning into the workforce and the accidental start of his business [18:30] – The “ADHD tax,” missed billing, overwhelm, and finally asking for help [20:07] – Time blindness, doubling time estimates, and the power of realistic planning [22:29] – Learning to celebrate wins and build sustainable routines [23:41] – Burnout, lifestyle changes, and respecting energy and limits [27:12] – The importance of transitions, routines, and boundaries [29:12] – Delegation struggles, the relay-race mindset, and building a trustworthy team [32:08] – Tools like Trello, Monday, and Asana for getting chaos out of your head [33:39] – Learning systems later in adulthood and adapting them over time [35:04] – Connor's advice: own your ADHD, learn the comorbidities, and advocate for yourselfLinks & ResourcesConnor on Instagram: @connor.p.colemanResiliency Lands (Connor's business): https://resiliencylands.com Book mentioned:

This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS After 5 fruitless years of investigating, White enforcement officials made an arrest in connection to the pipe bombs placed at the Washington D.C Republican and Democratic facilities on the even of the January 6, 2021 terrorist attacks. Brian J. Cole Jr., a black male and VA resident, was taken into custody on suspicion of the being the culprit for the IEDs. We'll also discuss President Trump's Racist remarks targeting so called Somalians. He blamed these non-white people for "trashing" Minnesota, and said we should prohibit them from entering the so called country. Surprisingly, many White people immediately branded Trump's comments as Racist. We'll also pay our respects to San Francisco legend Claude the albino alligator. The pale reptile died at the age of 30, which is relatively young for his species. Apparently, Claude lived a great life and was shouted out and sincerely mourned by many California elected officials. They may lower the state flag to half staff to honor their late albino mascot. #BlackMentalHealth INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

✈️ Take Flight Weekly #302: A Simple System to Qualify Clients Before You Commit

Ask Jim Miller

Welcome to episode 302 of Take Flight Weekly. Today, I walk you through one of the most critical conversations an elite-level producer can have: the client qualification and selection process. Too many advisors blindly accept every opportunity. I learned 2 things: No listings are better than listings that never get sold because of unrealistic expectations. And 20% of your clients steal 80% of your joy. Today, I'll break down a simple three-strike qualification framework that protects your time, energy, and brand integrity. The Elite Producer Mindset Elite-level producers aren't order takers; they're curators of fit. They operate like true fiduciaries. Their time, expertise, and marketing dollars are reserved for clients who respect their process. When you qualify leads effectively, you attract clients who value your professionalism. This isn't about arrogance; this is about protecting your time. Tactical Framework: The Three Strikes Rule → Strike One: Source of Business Ask: "How did you hear about me?" If it isn't a referral within two degrees of separation, note it. Referrals indicate trust. Cold leads require more time and energy. → Strike Two: Competition Check Ask: "How many agents are you interviewing?" If you're the only one, great. If they're talking to others, note the second strike. Multiple interviews mean they're shopping, not selecting. → Strike Three: Motivation and Mindset Ask: "Are you looking for full-service marketing, or focused on a specific net number?" If the conversation turns to net proceeds, not market value, that's strike three. The Professional Walk-Away Script "I don't think I'm the right fit for your listing. I'm not the cheapest in the marketplace. I'm full-service and full exposure. I invest heavily in marketing and my team. Most of my business comes from relationships built on trust. Talk to other advisors and decide the best fit. If it doesn't feel right, call me back." That's not rejection. That's disciplined leadership. Building Your Championship Roster Look at every spot on your client roster like a GM building a sports team. You only have so many roster spots. Choose carefully. Remember: "Fit." Does a client "fit" your business model? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
