Oprah's Weight Loss Dilemma: The Ozempic

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 26, 2025 4:51

Ozempic has dominated headlines once again this week as new research and high-profile celebrity discussions underscore its impact on the weight loss landscape in 2025. Ozempic, part of the class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists or GLP-1 drugs, was initially approved for managing type 2 diabetes but rapidly gained popularity for its striking effects on weight loss. According to Science Alert, a comprehensive review of clinical studies released in the past week highlights that while people see significant and often rapid weight loss while on these medications, discontinuing them results in almost immediate weight regain. Researchers from Peking University documented how many participants began to regain pounds as early as eight weeks after stopping medications like Ozempic or Wegovy, with body weight rising steadily for up to twenty weeks post-treatment. This review found that individuals who lost more weight on the medication had a higher risk of regaining it, although why this happens is not yet well understood. According to The Independent, contributing factors may include changes in metabolism or appetite regulation, and real-world experiences confirm that the weight rebound can be swift and distressing for many. Another visible trend is the increasing use of Ozempic by individuals who may not meet the original criteria for treatment, such as those without type 2 diabetes or severe obesity. Business Insider reports that about one in eight adults in the United States is now taking a GLP-1 medication, either for diabetes or primarily for weight loss. This surge includes a growing number of people with eating disorders who hope the medication might quiet what some describe as "food noise," only to find that it can worsen existing issues or trigger new eating disorders. Clinical centers nationwide are reporting more cases of patients with disordered eating turning to these drugs, which presents a worrying challenge for professionals trying to balance medical necessity against psychological risk. In one prominent example shared by Business Insider, a woman named Rose, with a decades-long history of bulimia and restrictive eating, felt validated seeking Ozempic after developing diabetes. However, her care team expressed concern that the medication could compromise her recovery and even endanger her health due to further weight loss. The cultural conversation is magnified by celebrities speaking out about their journeys, with Oprah Winfrey continuing to play a central role in shaping public dialogue. Reports by People and KoiMoi this week revisit her evolution from criticizing weight loss medications as "the easy way out" to openly embracing Ozempic as part of her personal strategy. In a recent WeightWatchers special, Oprah reflected on how her previous public advocacy for extreme diet methods was misguided and even apologized for promoting unsafe diet culture on her talk show and magazine. She disclosed that she lost forty pounds with Ozempic, emphasizing that while medication helped her reduce constant thoughts about food, genuine progress included changes in diet, increased physical activity, and a fundamental shift in mindset. Winfrey now encourages a more holistic, less judgmental approach to weight management, an attitude echoed by other celebrities like Lizzo, Meghan Trainer, and Whoopi Goldberg, all of whom recently revealed their experiences with weight loss drugs or lifestyle interventions.A crucial message emerging this week is that while GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic can deliver rapid results, experts and researchers caution that sustainable long-term weight loss still requires dietary regulation, exercise, and ongoing medical oversight. AOL and The Independent both emphasize that ceasing Ozempic often results in patients regaining most or all of their lost weight, sometimes within just a few months. Furthermore, medical professionals warn that returning to the medication after a break requires careful management to minimize side effects. There are also significant concerns about individuals using the medication for cosmetic weight loss or as a quick fix when they may not meet clinical criteria, particularly among those with a history of disordered eating. For listeners navigating this evolving topic, Ozempic remains a complex tool—an effective intervention for some when managed professionally, but fraught with challenges around misuse, sustainability, and mental health. The cultural narrative is shifting from miracle cure to nuanced understanding, as research and personal stories bring both possibilities and pitfalls into clearer focus. The discussion broadly dives into Mr. Singh's background, Sikhism fundamentals, and common misconceptions about the religion.   The episode begins with Daniel McCoy introducing the podcast and the topic, followed by Dyron Daughrity sharing his upcoming travel plans related to religious conferences and research. The conversation transitions into discussing Sikhism when Daniel prompts Dyron Daughrity to explain this relatively young religion originating from India. Gajinder Shah Singh shares his personal history, including his journey to the United States in 1971 and his work in Los Angeles. He elaborates on his family's long-standing connection to Sikhism, specifically through the contributions of his forefather to the construction of the Golden Temple. Mr. Singh emphasizes the importance of truth and morality in Sikh teachings and the role of Sikh gurus. The conversation shifts to discuss the similarities and differences between Sikhism and Christianity. Daniel McCoy and Dyron Daughrity note that both religions emphasize a personal relationship with God. However, Christians focus on salvation and faith in Jesus Christ, whereas Sikhs emphasize following the "Five Ks" and living through the teachings in the Guru Granth Sahib. Mr. Singh acknowledges Jesus Christ as a significant religious figure who promoted truth and fought against sin, drawing comparisons to Sikh gurus who also advocated for righteous living. The episode also explores common misconceptions about Sikhs, such as assumptions based on their appearance. Mr. Singh recounts instances of ignorance and highlights the importance of hospitality in Sikh culture. He points out that visiting a Gurdwara (Sikh temple) offers non-Sikhs insight into the Sikh way of life and provides opportunities for building interfaith understanding. Dyron Daughrity further promotes interfaith dialogue by urging listeners to visit local Gurdwaras and experience the welcoming nature and communal meals (langar) provided there. Mr. Singh notes that langar serves practical and symbolic purposes, rooted in agricultural traditions and promoting community and equality. Overall, this episode serves as an enlightening and comprehensive introduction to Sikhism, highlighting the religion's core beliefs, practices, history, and the shared human values of hospitality and truth. The conversation underscores the value of interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding in fostering global harmony.

I'm super happy to have the delightful couple Jackie Berkley and Zach Schmidt of Golden Everything on the show this week!! Both lovely humans and talented artists with separate paths, Zach and Jackie recently formed an amazing alt-country super-duo, and are celebrating their successful debut album together, Sweet Old World, an absolute gorgeous take on folk, country and Americana vibes. I discuss with Zack and Jackie about how their choices have lead to a healthy outlook in what can be a crazy and difficult world we call the music business. With a new album and a new baby at home, this dynamic couple is making it all happen by building a strong and organic team from the ground up. It's admirable and inspiring.Making their combination even more intriguing, Zach is a long-time stalwart on the Nashville music scene. He has two solo albums to his name and his most recent 2021 effort, Raise A Banner, is produced by Sadler Vaden and features The 400 Unit as his stellar backing band. Zach and Jackie's origin story is a meet-cute for the ages, and Zach's story of becoming a songwriter is truly legendary. We all go deep in this fun and engaging conversation, and I can't wait to share this one with all of you!!Show Notes:For more information on Golden Everything and Zack Schmidt as well as tour dates click HERE:Episode Chapters:00:00  – Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg 04:36  – Spring Awakening and New Beginnings07:36  – Performing at Newport Folk Festival 10:38  – Family Life and New Arrivals  13:31  – Musical Backgrounds and Influences  16:48  – The Journey to Nashville  19:36  – Biking Across America and Songwriting  24:40  – The Journey of a Lifetime  26:38  – The Impact of Music on Life  29:36  – Inspiration from Real-Life Stories  32:48  – Finding Community in Nashville  33:38  – The Magic of Santa's Pub  39:35  – Collaborations and Musical Connections  44:40  – Creating Music Under Pressure  49:09  – The Journey to Collaboration  52:29  – Navigating Parenthood and Music  56:11  – Health Challenges and Resilience  59:29  – Plans for the Future  01:04:36 – The DIY Approach to Music  01:06:37 – Songwriting Through Parenthood01:09:50 – Episode Outro with Host Josh RosenbergFor more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Shawn is one of the world’s leading health experts as the bestselling author of Sleep Smarter and host of the #1 rated Model Health Show. The first part of the discussion is about foot functionality. Shawn mentions the emerging research on how minimalist shoes can address the cause of foot dysfunction, “nourishing and rehabilitating our feet.” Then describes the awakening he has experienced using Peluva five-toe minimalist shoes, with increased proprioception and ease of movement. Then the show gets personal, as Shawn describes how his journey to becoming a health leader took shape. Growing up as an athlete in St. Louis, MO, Shawn suffering a serious injury on the running track and discovered that he was severely malnourished and had a degenerative bone disease. With his athletic dreams compromised, he lost hope, endured further suffering that included his mental health and putting on a bunch of excess body fat, and had to start from the bottom to turn his life around. Shawn’s struggle included having to reject mainstream medical treatment and a “poor me” attitude and discover a path to health on his own. Shawn’s grandma gets a huge plug here, and you will be touched by Shawn’s emotional recount of how he turned the corner and truly saved his life. You’ll also learn that Shawn’s malnourished youth was not some bizarre bad luck, but rather the norm in modern life today. Shawn cites research published in JAMA that kids today are eating 70% ultra-processed foods; the situation worsens with low socio-economic conditions. Shawn tells us the main ways we are still screwing up our health, even with lots of great information and awareness today. He urges us to prioritize sleep and take bold steps to optimize health. It starts with controlling your use of digital technology, forming an empowering attitude where you place health #1, creating a winning evening ritual, and more. Shawn Stevenson is the host of the Model Health Show and author of the best-selling books Sleep Smarter and Eat Smarter. Check out his Instagram @shawnmodel and his YouTube channel @TheShawnModel TIMESTAMPS: The wonderful cushiony shoes you are wearing feel terrific because they dull your sensations. [07:45] When you get into the Peluvas, it is important to start slowly, making sure your feet that have been stuffed into shoes have a chance to adjust. [16:43] At 20 years old, Shawn was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. [20:00] A 20-year study found that about 68 percent of America's children's diet consists of ultra processed foods. [21:29] Shawn could not imagine spending the rest of his life with the pain he was experiencing, so he began to research for a solution. [25:48] The most overlooked aspects of exercise is that it increases assimilation. [29:03] He began to understand how important his sleep and the proper nutrition are to his recovery. [30:40] Sleep impacts people's nutrition and general health. [36:11] Even though there is much information available for people to be informed on sleep and nutrition, we are still falling behind. [38:54] Shawn has suggested 21 tips for better sleep. One of the most important is the evening habit of being on screens. It interferes with your circadian rhythm and melatonin.
