Navigating unexpected health challenges in midlife?  So did today's guest.  She did it while learning how to pivot training/goals and identity without giving up strength, confidence, or purpose. A real conversation about listening to your body, redefining, success, and continuing to thrive when the old rules no longer apply. If you're navigating unexpected health challenges, this conversation will help you move forward feeling stronger, wiser, and more in control. My Guest: Tamea Smith is an IFFB Bikini Pro in her 60s who is redefining what strength looks like in midlife. After facing unexpected health challenges, Tamea was forced to step back, listen to her body, and rebuild her approach to training and recovery. Today, she helps women over 50 navigate changing hormones, shifting goals, and the emotional side of fitness – proving that thriving doesn't mean pushing harder, but pivoting with wisdom. Questions We Answer in This Episode: [00:10:20] How do you rebuild trust with your body after illness, injury, or burnout – especially when you're used to being “the strong one” [00:11:55] What does a “good training week” look like now for you? [00:26:49] Many women worry that if they stop training the way they used to, they'll lose muscle, bone, or confidence. What actually happens when training becomes smarter instead of harder? [00:28:35] You've spent years training at a very high level. What was the hardest part – mentally and emotionally – about having to pivot your training after your health challenges? [00:38:26] How can women in midlife tell the difference between “I need to push through” and “my body is asking for a different approach”? [00:39:53] If a woman listening feels discouraged because her body doesn't respond like it used to, what's one mindset shift that can help her move forward without giving up? If this episode made you flip your workout routine — share it!

Aging in Place: Safety, Technology, & Dignity w/ Drew Siefried of TruBlue Ally - AZ TRT S07 EP04 (286) 3-1-2026       Things We Learned This Week ·         America is aging rapidly - By 2030, 1 in 5 Americans will be over 65. ·         Most seniors want to stay in their homes - More than 80% of older adults prefer aging in place rather than moving to assisted living. ·         Technology is transforming senior safety - Non-intrusive monitoring systems can detect falls and alert families without cameras or wearables. ·         One fall can change everything - Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and loss of independence among seniors. ·         Prevention is far cheaper than crisis care - Simple home safety upgrades can prevent accidents and help seniors maintain independence longer.     Guest: Drew Seifried LKIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drewseifried/ Company: TruBlue Home Service Ally Website: https://www.trublueally.com/east-phoenix-north-scottsdale   With over 25 years of combined corporate and entrepreneurial experience, I currently own and operate TruBlue Home Service Ally, where we support seniors and busy families with home modifications and handyman services. In this role, we prioritize safety, reliability, and exceptional service, ensuring all personnel meet high professional standards. As a Certified Franchise Executive, I also guide aspiring entrepreneurs, including corporate professionals, first responders, and military veterans, toward business ownership through franchising. Leveraging expertise in franchise agreements and processes, I simplify the path to ownership, aligning opportunities with individual goals. My mission is to empower others to achieve their aspirations through purpose-driven ventures.   TruBlue Home Service Ally® provides a unique and affordable approach to helping busy adults and seniors live a worry-free life by offering trustworthy handyman, home maintenance and senior modification services. Helping you maintain your home both inside and out, TruBlue's services include: handyman projects and to-do list chores, preventative home maintenance programs, seasonal work, and senior modification services, all handled by a professional, bonded and insured Tru-Pro® Technician. Episode Overview America is entering a major demographic shift. By 2030, 1 in 5 Americans will be over the age of 65, creating what many experts call the "Silver Tsunami." Families across the country will face new challenges as aging parents want to maintain independence while staying safe at home. But aging at home safely requires planning. In this episode, we sit down with Drew Seifried of TruBlue Home Service Ally to discuss how home safety modifications, emerging Age Tech, and non-intrusive monitoring technologies are helping seniors stay independent longer — while providing peace of mind for their families. We also explore the unique needs of veterans and individuals with disabilities, and how communities and organizations can better support them.   Segment 1: Aging in Place & The Silver Tsunami Drew Seifried owns three territories with TruBlue, a national franchise focused on helping people safely remain in their homes. The company works primarily with: ·         Seniors and aging adults ·         People with disabilities ·         Veterans ·         Adult children caring for aging parents Their mission is simple: help people live independently and safely at home. The Growing Senior Population America is rapidly aging. Key statistics: ·         61 million Americans are age 65+ ·         By 2030, about 20% of the population will be seniors ·         Phoenix and other Sun Belt cities are seeing rapid senior population growth as retirees relocate This demographic shift will place new pressure on: ·         Healthcare systems ·         Caregiver workforce ·         Family members caring for aging parents The Hidden Risk: Falls in the Home One of the biggest threats to senior independence is falling. Key statistics: ·         1 in 4 adults age 65+ falls each year ·         Falls cause over 3 million emergency room visits annually ·         More than 300,000 seniors are hospitalized each year for hip fractures ·         Over 50% of falls occur inside the home In many cases, one fall can change everything. A serious fall can lead to: ·         Hospitalization ·         Loss of mobility ·         Long-term disability ·         Moving into assisted living The Most Dangerous Areas in a Home According to home safety experts, the highest risk areas include: ·         Bathrooms (tubs and showers) ·         Entryways and stairs ·         Poor lighting ·         Cluttered hallways or walkways Even small modifications can dramatically reduce fall risk. Preventing Falls Before They Happen TruBlue helps families install preventative safety upgrades such as: ·         Bathroom grab bars ·         Non-slip shower treatments ·         Improved lighting ·         Handrails and stair supports ·         Walkway hazard removal The company also performs full home safety assessments to identify hidden risks. As Drew explains, the goal is prevention — because once a fall happens, recovery can be much more difficult. Aging at Home vs Assisted Living Another major challenge families face is cost. Average assisted living costs in the U.S.: ·         $5,000–$6,000 per month ·         Often $60,000–$70,000 per year By comparison, many safety upgrades or in-home services cost a fraction of that. And most seniors prefer to stay home. Surveys show: ·         84% of seniors want to age in place ·         Independence and familiarity with their home environment matter deeply Segment 2: Age Tech & Smart Monitoring One challenge facing families is the shrinking caregiver workforce. With fewer caregivers available, technology is stepping in to help monitor safety. Adult children want peace of mind that their parents are safe — especially when they live in another city. But many seniors dislike traditional monitoring systems. Common concerns include: ·         Cameras in the home ·         Wearable emergency devices ·         Privacy issues ·         Technology complexity A New Approach: Radar-Based Monitoring A newer technology solution is radar-based monitoring systems like those from Pontosense. These systems use small radar sensors placed throughout the home. They can detect: ·         Falls ·         Movement patterns ·         Breathing and vital signals Unlike cameras, they are completely non-intrusive. Features include: ·         No cameras ·         No wearable devices ·         No audio recording ·         No stored video data The system can detect unusual events and send alerts. Smart Alerts for Families If a fall occurs, the system can: ·         Wait about 90 seconds to see if someone gets up (reducing false alerts) ·         Send notifications to family members ·         Contact caregivers ·         Alert emergency services if necessary Family members can also monitor activity patterns through a mobile app. For adult children balancing careers, families, and aging parents, this technology provides peace of mind without invading privacy. Segment 3: Disability Services & Veteran Support TruBlue also works with individuals living with disabilities and veterans who require specialized home modifications. Organizations supporting the disability community include: ·         Ability360 ·         Benevilla These groups offer programs ranging from adaptive sports to community support services. Health Challenges as We Age Many older adults face conditions that impact mobility or independence. These can include: ·         Arthritis ·         Balance issues ·         Progressive neurological diseases like ALS or MS ·         Reduced strength and coordination Simple tasks — getting into a bathtub, climbing stairs, or reaching shelves — can become difficult. Home modifications can restore independence. Importantly, these upgrades can be designed to blend into the home aesthetically, preserving both function and dignity. Supporting Veterans Veterans represent another group that often needs home safety support. Key statistics: ·         Approximately 17 million veterans live in the United States ·         Nearly 8 million veterans are age 65 or older Despite available programs, many veterans do not utilize assistance. Organizations working to support veterans include: ·         Paralyzed Veterans of America ·         Veterans of Foreign Wars ·         Elks Lodge Drew himself served in the military and is passionate about helping veterans access services and resources. Additional Home Safety Monitoring Beyond fall prevention, modern smart homes can also monitor: ·         Smoke and fire detection ·         Water leaks and flooding ·         Utility failures ·         Entry and exit activity These systems help families create a safer living environment for aging loved ones.   Final Takeaway Aging doesn't have to mean losing independence. With the right combination of: ·         Home safety modifications ·         Smart technology ·         Community resources ·         Family planning Millions of seniors can live longer, safer, and more confidently in their own homes.       'Best Of' Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+of+BRT      Thanks for Listening. Choosing The Narrative: Meditation Teacher Megan Monahan on Meeting Health Challenges With Grace, Breathwork for Stress & Unmasking Trauma Responses

What happens when your body, the very thing you've spent nearly two decades teaching others to harmonize with, begins to fail you in a way you never saw coming? This week on the show, I'm sitting down with meditation teacher, and author Megan Monahan. Megan first appeared on Hurdle back in 2019, and today she returns to share a profoundly personal update. In late 2024, Megan faced a life-altering health hurdle: a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Megan takes us inside the raw moments of her diagnosis—from the sudden loss of vision in her right eye to an eight-hour wait in an UCLA emergency room. We discuss the power of the "meditation muscles" she built over 16 years and how they allowed her to meet this challenge with resilience instead of a victim mindset. In this episode, we discuss: The sudden symptoms and 36-hour journey to an MS diagnosis. How a decade of spiritual practice reframed a "devastating" diagnosis into a "resurgence of purpose". The 4-7-8 breathwork framework and somatic shaking for navigating high-stress moments. Unmasking personality traits that are actually trauma responses. What it truly means to be authentic and "come home to yourself". Lessons learned from spiritual giants like Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer. QUOTABLE MOMENTS "You get to choose how a life-changing moment changes you. We all have the ability to author our story in whatever way we want." The diagnosis forced her to confront a truth she had long postponed: the emotional weight of trauma does not disappear simply because the job is done. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . “I was trained to protect children, not myself,” Brandy has said. “For years, I believed strength meant pushing through. I didn't realize how much I was carrying until my body and mind finally said, ‘Enough.'” Two Cases That Changed Everything Among the many investigations Brandy handled, two child abuse cases left an indelible mark on her mental health and recovery. One of those cases escalated into a devastating homicide, a tragedy that still echoes through her work today. Health Challenges for Her From Trauma and Recovery: How One Child Abuse Investigator Turned Pain Into Purpose. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. “When a case ends in murder, it doesn't just close,” she explains. “It lives with you. You replay every decision, every report, every moment you wonder if something, anything, could have changed the outcome.” The emotional toll of repeated exposure to violence, abuse, and loss is well-documented among frontline professionals, yet often minimized. Brandy's experience highlights the health challenges for her from trauma and recovery, a reality shared by many investigators, first responders, and healthcare workers who silently shoulder cumulative trauma. From Investigator to Therapist Following her PTSD diagnosis, Brandy made a life-altering transition. Today, she is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and practicing therapist, specializing in trauma recovery for frontline professionals and their families. Based in California, Brandy now helps others navigate the very terrain she once crossed alone. “Healing didn't mean leaving my past behind,” she says. “It meant understanding it, and using it to help others survive theirs.” Health Challenges for Her From Trauma and Recovery. Her work as an in-house therapist with the Stockton Police Department places her alongside officers coping with stress, addiction, critical incidents, and cumulative trauma. Certified in First Responder Counseling, Critical Incident Stress Management (CCISM), and EMDR, Brandy delivers evidence-based care tailored to high-risk professions. A Childhood Marked by Abuse, and Survival Brandy's professional journey cannot be separated from her personal story. Raised by a teenage mother battling bipolar disorder and addiction, her childhood was marked by instability, emotional neglect, violent outbursts, and repeated abuse by trusted family friends. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and other podcast platforms. Her experiences reflect a painful reality often hidden behind closed doors, one that shapes both victims and the professionals who later serve them. “I didn't just investigate abuse,” Brandy writes. “I understood it.” That understanding would later become the foundation of her memoir, Turning Pain Into Purpose. Turning Pain Into Purpose: A Memoir of Trauma and Redemption In Turning Pain Into Purpose, Brandy chronicles her journey from a childhood defined by abuse, to a career immersed in trauma, and finally to a life rooted in healing and advocacy. The book is unflinching, deeply human, and profoundly hopeful. Health Challenges for Her From Trauma and Recovery. A Voice for the Voiceless More than a memoir, Turning Pain Into Purpose is a beacon for those who feel broken, lost, or unheard. It speaks not only to survivors of abuse, but to professionals who carry trauma in silence, and to anyone searching for meaning after suffering. Brandy Krueg's story is proof that while trauma leaves scars, it can also create clarity, compassion, and purpose. Words from doctors can become the most powerful poison you ever swallow. One diagnosis spoken with certainty can lock your body into decline, unless you learn how to reject the curse and rewrite the story. Today, my personal doctor, Dr. Michael Rankin Sr., returns to expose how medical labels turn into self-fulfilling prophecies, word curses that lower your cellular voltage and invite disease progression.  We talk about why saying "I have…" is so dangerous, how emotional trauma and childhood programming create the perfect soil for cancer and chronic illness, and the exact mindset & spiritual shifts that have helped people reverse "terminal" situations, long-standing pain, vaccine injuries, and even basketball-sized tumors. If you've ever been given a scary diagnosis, told your child has ADHD/anxiety/autism, or watched someone give up hope after hearing they have "six months left," this episode is probably the most important thing you'll listen to this year.   " 97% of all people who take conventional (oncology) treatment will die." ~ Dr. Michael Rankin, Sr.   In This Episode: - Why every diagnosis is a potential word curse - Why saying "sorry" is like a curse - Reversing diagnosis conflicts with love - How diagnosis conflicts become self-talk patterns - Healing childhood molestation trauma - Bioresonance scans and remote healing explained - The power of gratitude over hope and prayer - Juicing protocols for enzyme absorption after chemo - Protect children from harmful medications and ADD or ADHD labels - Reevaluating mental health labels and using gratitude statements correctly - Free resources & healing scriptures at testingcancer.com   Products & Resources Mentioned: Puori Creatine+: Grab 20% off at https://puori.com/wendy with code WENDY. In this deeply moving episode, Maya sits down with Dawn, a surviving sibling who opens up about the unexpected loss of her brother Justin, just weeks before his wedding day. Dawn shares the full arc of their sibling bond, from pranks and family laughter, to the hidden pain Justin carried, to the shock of losing him to suicide in 2013. Through her storytelling, Dawn brings light to the complexities of grief, sibling guilt, the impact of hidden addiction and gambling, and the long road toward healing. This conversation is a tribute to Justin, a celebration of Dawn's strength, and a resource for anyone navigating the grief of suicide loss. She also shares how her daughter Justine, born later, became a symbol of healing and joy. In This Episode: [0:00] – Meet Dawn & Her Brother Justin Dawn introduces her family, sharing about her close-knit childhood with her two brothers, including the deep bond she had with Justin, her "twin in spirit." [2:00] – Living with Visual Impairment & Justin's Support She opens up about growing up with congenital nystagmus, and how Justin always treated her with love and equality—never seeing her as disabled. [5:00] – Prank Wars & Wedding Shenanigans From pranking their brother Jason to orchestrating a hilarious wedding garter joke, Dawn reflects on how laughter defined their sibling connection. [7:00] – Health Challenges & Justin's Shift Dawn explains how Justin's life took a turn after a medical issue ended his athletic dreams, which may have led to a spiral of hidden struggles. [10:00] – The Call That Changed Everything In May 2013, Dawn receives a devastating call: Justin was found in the woods by their father. He had died by suicide, just one month before his wedding. [13:00] – Processing the Shock Dawn recounts the overwhelming grief, the small details that haunted her (like how Justin's smile was missing in his casket), and how she stepped into her "eldest sibling" role to hold the family together. [17:00] – The Unraveling Begins After the funeral, the family begins discovering secrets Justin had kept hidden—dropping out of college, gambling debts, and signs of silent struggle. [23:00] – Navigating Family Shame & Speaking the Truth Dawn candidly discusses how her family wanted to hide the cause of death, but how speaking up and honoring the truth helped her begin to heal. [26:00] – Grief, Guilt & a Mud Run Gone Wrong On what would've been Justin's wedding day, Dawn attempted to mask her grief with a mud run—but broke her ankle, lost her job, and spiraled into depression. The symbolic "fall" marked a breaking point in her grief journey. [29:00] – Naming Her Daughter After Justin A year later, Dawn gave birth to her third child, Justine Brianna, named after her brother. From her left-handedness to her smile, Justine became a living tribute and source of healing for the family. [32:00] – Pregnant in Grief: The Duality of Joy & Loss Dawn shares what it was like to grieve while pregnant—balancing immense sorrow with the hope of new life, and the bittersweet beauty of motherhood after loss. [34:00] – Six Years Later: The Weight of Untold Grief In 2019, six years after Justin's death, Dawn broke her silence—not in therapy, but in a surprising place: a Weight Watchers meeting. Talking about her grief helped her shed both emotional and physical weight. [43:00] – The Power of Community in Grief Whether it's a podcast, support group, or a wellness meeting, Dawn emphasizes the importance of community when grieving a sibling.
