In this episode of our Be Brave Series, we sit down with Dr. John Rusin - founder of Pain Free Performance Specialist Certification - to explore what it really means to train smart—especially when pain, injury, or burnout starts knocking at the door. We dive deep into how athletes can honor their bodies without sacrificing performance, and why addressing pain early—not ignoring it—is a game changer. John shares his insights on how coaches can create space for athletes to slow down when needed, and how conversations around injury and recovery can be reframed to build trust, resilience, and longevity in sport. Whether you're an athlete, coach, or just someone pushing your limits, this one's for you.
Today's runner is a physical therapist, run coach, and running content creator with over 20 years of experience. While her early love for running was more casual—fitting in between high-level tennis competitions—her journey eventually led her to chase the marathon distance. Her first attempt? The 2020 New York City Marathon… and we all know how that turned out. After completing an entire training block, she had to make the tough call to defer. When she finally got to the start line in 2022, she was ready for her dream NYC moment—but instead, faced one of the hardest race days of her life. Still, that race gave her a mindset shift that she carries into every training cycle and coaching session today. I was smiling the entire time we recorded this. Runners love to talk running—and this conversation was no exception. Follow along with Victoria at @trainsmartrunstrong on Instagram!

In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discusses: The practical differences between direct reward conditioning and indirect reward conditioning. Primacy of learning and conditioning hunting as a means of locating odor. Understanding the foundations built into your dog's early training. Utilize the quality of hunting as the barometer to show your dog's interest. Giving varied and unique hiding places for the odor to your dog in training. Creating sticky behavior in your dog when searching. Building variability to maintain behavior over time. Key Takeaways: In the direct reward methodology, we are pairing hunting and odor recognition. It teaches an olfactory queue to get an obedience behavior. In the indirect methodology, we pair the final response and the odor recognition. Variation in hunting volume and variable reward in finding the target order are extremely important. Remove handler dependency as much as possible. You don't want your canine to be obsessed with you, your reward delivery, and presentations. You want them to have enough independence to do their work without influence from you. Mimic what you see in deployment in your training and in-services. Those pictures should be aligned, your dog doesn't know the difference. Clearing blanks is something your dog needs to know how to do because that is what they're going to see often in deployment. "Variable reward is the thing that's going to really keep your dog at a high level of engagement in the hunting process over longer periods of time and more area that we're asking them to cover, and it's very important to master variation in how you do detection." — Jerry Bradshaw Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com Contact Jerry: Website: controlledaggressionpodcast.com Email: JBradshaw@TarheelCanine.com Tarheel Canine Training: www.tarheelcanine.com Youtube: tarheelcanine Twitter: @tarheelcanine Instagram: @tarheelk9 Facebook: TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: psak9-as.org Patreon: patreon.com/controlledaggression Slideshare: Tarheel Canine Calendly: https://calendly.com/tarheelcanine Tarheel Canine Seminars: https://streetreadyk9.com/ Tarheel Canine Student Portal: https://tcstudentportal.com/ Sponsors: ALM K9 Equipment: almk9equipment.com PSA & American Schutzhund: psak9-as.org Tarheel Canine: tarheelcanine.com The Drive Company: https://thedriveco.com/ The Drive Company Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thedrive.co Train Hard, Train Smart, Be Safe. Donate to the podcast here https://buymeacoffee.com/therunningdeeppodcast In this conversation, Jason shares his journey from being a party boy and former AFL player to becoming a successful triathlete and coach. He emphasizes the importance of consistency and building a strong endurance base. Jason also discusses the misconception that hard work alone leads to success in triathlon and highlights the significance of smart training and injury prevention. He shares his own experience of training smart and achieving impressive results with limited training hours. Jason challenges the mindset of 'no pain, no gain' and encourages athletes to prioritize rest and recovery. The conversation revolves around the themes of training philosophy, longevity in the sport, and finding joy in the process. They emphasize the need to slow down, listen to your body, and prioritize long-term fitness and well-being. The conversation also touches on the pressure of social media and the misconception that strength is solely determined by results Jason discusses the post-race blues and the challenges of finding purpose after achieving goals. He shares his personal experiences of feeling lost and struggling with his sense of identity after leaving his job and retiring from professional racing. He concludes by expressing his desire to find peace and enjoy the journey rather than focusing solely on results. Key takeaways: Consistency and building a strong endurance base are key to success in triathlon. Smart training and injury prevention should be prioritized over excessive training volume. Hard work alone does not guarantee success in triathlon; it's important to train smart and listen to your body. Rest and recovery are crucial for optimal performance and injury prevention. Focus on building a base, consistency, and enjoying the training process rather than solely chasing performance and PBs. Slowing down and listening to your body is crucial for long-term success and avoiding burnout. The pressure of social media can lead to unrealistic expectations and a focus on external validation. Strength is not solely determined by results; vulnerability and the ability to embrace the journey are also signs of strength. Finding joy and fulfillment in the sport and prioritizing long-term health and well-being are key to longevity in triathlon. The week after a race can be a challenging time emotionally, as the adrenaline wears off and the reality of the next goal sets in. Leaving a job or retiring from racing can lead to a loss of purpose and a sense of identity crisis. It's important to be humble and not compare your achievements to others, as everyone's journey is unique. Listen to your body and don't push yourself when you're not ready. It's okay to take a break and rest. Finding peace and enjoying the journey is more important than focusing solely on results. Want to connect with Jason? Professional distance and marathon runner Neely Spence Gracey has been a competitive runner since she was in her teens and running has been a part of her life since she was born: both of her parents were competitive runners, and her father was an internationally competitive marathoner. In recent years, however, Neely's running focus and motivation has shifted, in large part because she began to balance new priorities. In addition to remaining committed to being an elite level competitor, Neely wanted to become a mom. This story follows Neely's running career from the high highs of her phenomenal 2016 debut in the marathon, through to today, including becoming the mother of two boys, Rome and Athens. Her journey has been full of ups and downs, but as the uncertainties that come with pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding have come to pass, Neely finds herself appreciating running in new ways and finding competitive fun in unexpected places. Along the way, Neely has set a world record in the stroller mile, she's had some epic races at Disney World, and she's earned her way into Olympic Trails Marathon, which will happen February 3, 2024. Meet Neely Gracey, 4-time Olympic Trials Qualifier (12, 16, 20, 24), top American at the 2016 Boston Marathon, and the 11th American female EVER to break 70 minutes in the half marathon. Neely is fresh off her 9th place finish at CIM—this year's USATF Championship Race—where she rocked a sizzling 2:30:29 PR (5:43 per mile)! Neely opened up about not being able to run during her first pregnancy, losing her "identity" as a runner—going from one of the top distance runners in the country to "no one" for years, despite being sponsored and feeling a pressure to return to a high level. It was a rough phase from 2017-2020, but feels she is a better person on the other side—ultimately feeling that her body needed that break—and has completely reframed her relationship with running and her approach to training and racing. We discuss: -Reframing her identity and relationship with running -Evolving her approach and mindset to training and racing -The husband & wife coaching dynamic & partnership (complete with a funny story from the Indy Monumental 1/2M) -How coaching helps inspire her to keep chasing big goals as a runner, coach, and mother -Mantras: "You're right where you're meant to be" and "trust the process" -Her new book: Breakthrough Women's Running: Dream Big and Train Smart where she shares her experience from both an athlete and coach perspective to provide a road map for women runners who are chasing big goals Such big INPSO and so many great takeaways! I look forward to following Neely's amazing journey as a runner, coach at Get Running Coaching, and author. Today's episode I break down what it means when people talk about exercises working a lengthened, mid, or short/contracted position of the muscle. Why should you care?! Because research shows that working muscle at certain lengths can provide more muscle growth. THATS AWESOME! The second half of the episode I give you advice on how to utilize this information when writing your own programming.I breakdown programming into... Primary exercises Supportive exercises Accessory exercises (only really needed for specialized training programming) This simple breakdown allows us to choose smart movements and not fill our programming with a bunch of junk volume. “When I first got pregnant, I was like, ‘Oh, it's just like a big injury. You slowly lose fitness, and then you eventually have to stop altogether. And then you take some time off, then you get back to it once you're healed and recovered.' And I was pretty far off. I feel like it definitely was a different process, because you are physically changing and emotionally changing and mentally changing on top of not being able to run. On the other side of it, I feel like I came out a different person.” About a year after Neely Spence Gracey's first son was born, she found herself in a difficult spot. What she'd envisioned as a swift, strong return to running wasn't going as planned. She was injured, anxious, and while she loved Athens with all her heart, struggling to balance the demands of being a pro athlete, coach, and new mom. Now, she has two sons—Rome was born in June 2021—and a whole new perspective. While she's still rebuilding from her second pregnancy, she now knows the process may take longer than she'd planned. But she's OK with that; her competitive fire still burns, and she's committed to taking care of herself and her family even as she keeps her sights set on big goals. Neely is the co-author—with Cindy—of a new book called Breakthrough Women's Running: Dream Big and Train Smart. In the book, and in this week's episode, she talks about what a breakthrough means, and why standout performance might look different in different phases; how injury and pregnancy both alter an athlete's identity; and how to keep making progress toward your goals no matter what life throws at you.
