After concluding a prolific professional cycling career that produced a medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games, eight US national championships, two Pan American gold medals and a world record, Dotsie Bausch has become a powerful influencer for plant-based eating for athletes and non-athletes alike. Named by VegNews in 2019 as one of the top 20 most influential vegans in the world, she utilizes her degree in plant-based nutrition to inform her impassioned messages as an advocate on behalf of humans, planet earth and animals.  Never one to shy away from facing staggering odds – just like she did in the Olympics while riding for Team USA, whose unlikely and triumphant story is chronicled in the Netflix documentary “Personal Gold” – her latest initiative is founding the non-profit Switch4Good. Switch4Good launched in early 2018 with a television commercial featuring six Olympians from four different countries and proves that cow's milk is not part of a high-performance diet. The ground-breaking commercial aired on NBC during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games closing ceremonies and on ABC during the Academy Awards broadcast.  Bausch is also one of the stars of the film The Game Changers, which chronicles the story of the world's most dangerous myth. Directed by Academy Award winner Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by Oscar winner James Cameron, The Game Changers was released to worldwide audiences in October of 2019 and in just one week, became the #1 downloaded film of all time on iTunes.  Long before embodying radiant health and becoming an influential game changer, Bausch struggled for years with severe eating disorders and a recreational drug habit, that combined, led to a suicide attempt. It was during her recovery that she discovered her gift and love for the bike. Bausch speaks passionately around the world, spreading her message about the numerous benefits – humane, nutritional and environmental – of plant-based eating.  In  S2E12 I am delighted to welcome Dr Alice McNamara and Dr Charlotte Durand to the podcast.      Alice is sport and exercise medicine registrar in Melbourne, Australia. She is also a dual world champion rower with over a decade of experience on the Australian women's rowing team. She qualified for the lightweight women's double for the London Olympic Games and attended the Beijing games as an alternate.    (Full Bio in episode. )     Charlotte is an emergency registrar working in Darwin, NT. She is also a triathlete and competed for Australia in the 2018 ITU world triathlon finals.  (Again full bio in episode.)     In this conversation we discuss their respective backgrounds and careers to date in both sport and medicine and use as a platform to explore the themes of optimising performance and supporting wellbeing for doctors ( and indeed anyone looking to do this in their life).  Alice and Charlotte use their experiences in sport and apply the performance lens to their medical training. They cover periodisation, deliberate practice, visualisation, coaching and mentoring and setting boundaries and recovery goals, topics familiar to listeners to this podcast. We explore parallels, similarities and differences between the athlete and doctor-in-training experience.  Alice explains the concepts of physiological overreaching and the pathological overtraining syndrome and we compare and contrast to the profession syndrome of burnout.         In the second half of the conversation Alice speaks about her research with the AIS exploring female athlete heath and we discuss the Relative Energy Deficit in Sport ( RED-S), introducing concepts of energy availability in both female and male athletes, elite and recreational.   This leads on to a more general conversation about fuelling and hydration for shift work and attention to self care and basic needs at work in the clinical environment.      The central themes of performance and wellbeing weave through this entirely of this conversation and both Alice and Charlotte share valuable perspective including many pearls and takeaways from their considerable experience and expertise.     I learned a lot from this conversation and it is a joy to listen to Alice and Charlotte share their authentic lived experience of performing and integrating sport, work and life as both athletes and doctors with a medical and sports science and psychology framework. When cyclist Dotsie Bausch quit dairy at 37, many in her circle warned it would jeopardize her Olympic dreams. The opposite happened. Her athletic recovery and performance went through the roof and propelled her forward to victory in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Now, she has a message for other athletes and consumers worldwide. Dotsie founded switch4good.org to spread the word. A growing number of Olympic athletes are joining the call to ditch dairy now! It was pretty mind blowing; without animal foods, my recovery time sped up and my output increased, Bausch shares. I had more energy and was able to gain more strength and in the end, was able to leg press 585 pounds x 60 reps x 5 sets without animals on my plate. The guys in the gym just scratched their heads watching me. Explaining what drives her to reach and educate others, Bausch explains, I want folks to be better informed and experience the secret to overall health and performance, be more disease resistant, and be aware of the lies the dairy industry perpetuates to us—which are motivated entirely by profit, not the betterment of our health or our planet. In addition to all the outreach work and resources she provides through Switch4Good, Bausch starred in James Cameron's The Game Changers (one of the most-watched documentary on Netflix) and gave an Olympic Level Compassion TED talk. Dotsie co-hosts a popular Switch4Good podcast (.5M downloads, listeners in 90 countries, 130+ episodes). And, she spoke before Congress to help change U.S. dietary guidelines. Going vegan is actually quite popular. A recent Ipsos survey revealed a 300% increase in Americans becoming vegan from 2004 to 2019. A vegetarian eats no meat. Vegans also don't consume dairy or other animal products. What I've learned about dairy – the industry itself, and consuming it – would simply shock 95% of the population, Bausch explained. It's as eye opening as it is upsetting. Dairy makes most people sick. Nearly 70% of the global population (and 70-95% of minorities) are lactose intolerant. Basically, the majority of people get sick if they consume any dairy at all. A National Institutes of Health report stated that approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Symptoms of lactose intolerance include abdominal cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. Eliminating the dairy helps people have more comfortable gut health.

In his impressive career, he's coached athletes to medal at many international events, including at the Olympics. I had the privilege of interviewing Jono for his insights on the mindset of a world class coach and athlete. Aside from being a World Duathlon Champion himself, his athletes have medalled at numerous world competitions including the Olympic Games. 2016 Canadian Head Coach Triathlon, Rio Olympic Games 2012 USA Head Coach Triathlon, London Olympic Games. 2008 Australian Team Coach, Beijing Olympics 2004 Team Australia, Athens Olympics 1997 World Duathlon Champion --------------------- 1:36 - Jono describes his career. 2:47 - How to deal with major unknowns such as the pandemic pandemic. It's important to understand that unknowns are a reality. 5:01 - The role of adaptation to training athletes. Maintaining process while acknowledging the unknowns is important. Taking the time to develop strong processes beforehand are key to being able to move forward. 7:36 - How to deal with handling failure. Jono had so many amazing insights here. Check out these quotes: "I'm very honest about my experiences … I learned more from my failures than successes." “I've always been quite open about acknowledging where I've failed. They were the key learning moments” “I gravitate towards positivity. However you can create positivity from what you could describe as a failure” “It enables me to create a learning moment from whatever situation you're in” “I'm setting my athletes to succeed but I'm conscious that I don't make it so that they never fail.” “Taking those learning moments from whatever is going on - good, bad, indifferent … I think is a skillset.” “It's less of a burden when you have the ability to rebound, learn something and be better.” 10:45 - What makes the elite truly elite? “The truly elite have clarity in their goal, which creates clarity in their purpose” “They Work out quickly and surround with people on the same pathway.” “They surround themselves with people on the same pathway, not necessarily people who agree with them but people willing to challenge them.” “They make that process simple.” “They have a clear goal in conjunction with very, very high ambition." He has a fascinating thought about the need for patience working towards the goal. It's like they're "hurrying slowly." 13:48 - Jono discusses balancing guiding and teaching athletes with allowing his team to become more independent. “Make sure the athletes don't become dependent on you. When I'm guiding athletes I'm also teaching them”. “As a coach, I'm almost trying to make myself redundant to a point. So that they don't *need* me.” “They've learned through that period when they could self-direct.” “The lessons we learn in sport set us up to be successful beyond life” By creating guiding directives, athletes then have the ability to create some autonomy. 17:18 - I've always been fascinated by the duality of independence vs. team. Jono gives an insight into the mindset of how team makes you stronger even when you are competing individually. “Individuals who receive an individual award need to operate with some of the concepts of team without the reward of team.” “You need to have a deeper understanding of where individuals operate .. and cut off any potential conflict before it happens.” “You want a champion team, not a team of champions.” 23:16- Jono describes the Multi Sport Brain. “It just makes me feel so much, this piece. There's something happening here that's so incredibly sweet but also so mournful.”  In this episode, Christopher Wheeldon talks about how he discovered Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev after seeing his first ballet, Romeo and Juliet, at the Royal Opera House. He later fell in love with Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto, wearing out a cassette tape of it in the process of playing it over and over. The music stuck with him for years to come, and though he'd abandoned previous attempts to create a ballet for it, once Wheeldon started his own company, he finally felt able to choreograph for the music he'd connected with so strongly as a child. Christopher Wheeldon is a Tony-Award winning choreographer. His work includes An American in Paris, the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games and the minimalist ballet After The Rain, which inspired the Open Ears episode by Megan Reid.
