We'll investigate why it loves to prank so much and just how ethical/necessary such pranks may or may not be. Plus, Braden complains about yet another Pokemon movie! White: To protect themselves from danger, they hide their true identities by transforming into people and Pokémon. Black & White 2: It changes so it looks just like its foe, tricks it, and then uses that opportunity to flee. Ultra Sun: This Pokémon has a cowardly disposition, so when it's not around friends, it basically always stays transformed as something else. Ultra Moon: If a normally talkative child suddenly stops talking, it may have been replaced by Zorua. Sword: Zorua is a timid Pokémon. This disposition seems to be what led to the development of Zorua's ability to take on the forms of other creatures. Shield: Zorua sometimes transforms into a person and goes into cities to search for food. When Zorua does this, it usually takes on the form of a child. BTB: A cunning little shapeshifter that uses its abilities for fun, safety, and profit. Child kidnapping allegations remain unproven. White: They use the long fur on their arms as a whip to strike their opponents. Black & White 2: Using the long fur on its arms like whips, it launches into combo attacks that, once started, no one can stop. Ultra Sun: It overwhelms its opponents with continuous attacks and then slowly stores up power before delivering the finishing blow. Ultra Moon: When Mienshao lets out a bizarre wail, you're in danger. A flurry of kicks and chops too fast to see is about to be unleashed! Sword: When Mienshao comes across a truly challenging opponent, it will lighten itself by biting off the fur on its arms. Shield: Delivered at blinding speeds, kicks from this Pokémon can shatter massive boulders into tiny pieces. BTB: Its unique but inefficient whip-like combat style is still fast enough to obliterate your weak body. It's time to talk Tepig! Join us as we're inevitably charmed by a cute pig and get randomly sidetracked by Disney World and Waluigi. Follow along with the entries below: Black: It can deftly dodge its foe's attacks while shooting fireballs from its nose. It roasts berries before it eats them. White: It blows fire through its nose. When it catches a cold, the fire becomes pitch-black smoke instead. Black & White 2: It loves to eat roasted berries, but sometimes it gets too excited and burns them to a crisp. Photodex: Tepig can use the flames it creates inside its body to shoot fireballs out of its nose! It also has a keen sense of smell, and it's skilled at tracking scents to search for food. Ash's Pokédex: Tepig, the Fire Pig Pokémon. Normally, fire shoots out of Tepig's snout, but it shoots out smoke instead when it is feeling ill. BTB: It's a precious little oinker and aspiring chef. We’re kicking off August with the coming-of-age classic The Wood (1999). Directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar, Dope, The Mandalorian) and starring a who’s-who of young Black It girls and boys of the late ’90s and early aughts, The Wood was the seventh film produced by MTV Films and part of a barnstorming spate of four movies released by the newly formed studio that year alone. Black coming-of-age films, outside of the so-called “homeboy” canon, were sparse before this era and seem to have receded back into rarity since. Grossing over $25 million on $6 million budget, the film’s relative box office success eerily belies its lack of currency in mainstream culture. But, like a lot of films from the era, its cult status among Black millennials is unequivocal and a testament to Todd Boyd’s and Famuyiwa’s ability to write young Black best friends whose universal earnestness and love for each other transcend the white-perceived social barriers of their environment. The Wood’s version of 1980s Inglewood is less a counterpoint to the South Central L.A. of Boyz n the Hood and more a vibrant, necessary companion text, of which there should have been many more. From an industry standpoint, it’s a classic indie film from the height of the American indie wave that’s rarely mentioned in conversations around more widely adored coming-of-age films of the era like Dazed And Confused, Rushmore, or Slums of Beverly Hills. ⁣ ⁣ Watch along with us as Week 5 of Black Is Not A Genre explores the under-examined universality of the Black Bildungsroman, the invisibility of the Black middle class, and the magic of Black Los Angeles.
