SHOW 12-12-2025 THE SHOW BEGINS IN DOUBTS ABOUT 2026.2 Las Vegas Venues, California Rail, and Disney's AI Investment: Colleague Jeff Bliss reports that Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium is now a top-grossing venue while many resorts are dropping unpopular fees, discussing California's new rail line to Anaheim, mismanagement of the Pacific Palisades fire, and high gas prices, additionally covering Disney's investment in OpenAI and its new luxury community, Cotino. Nvidia's Jensen Huang and the AI Revolution: Colleague Brandon Weichert praises Nvidia's Jensen Huang as a pivotal geopolitical figure driving the AI revolution, comparing AI's growth to the railroad boom and predicting long-term economic benefits and massive opportunities for construction and energy sectors as the US builds infrastructure to support data centers. Business Resilience and AI Tools in Construction: Colleague Gene Marks reports on business resilience in Austin despite tariff concerns and describes a safety conference in Fargo where AI tools were a focus, explaining that AI and robotics like Boston Dynamics' Spot are supplementing rather than replacing workers in construction, helping address severe labor shortages. Health Reimbursement Arrangements and AI's Economic Potential: Colleague Gene Marks advocates for Health Reimbursement Arrangements, noting they allow small businesses to control costs while employees buy their own insurance tax-free, also discussing AI's potential to double economic growth and advising businesses to ignore doomsday predictions and embrace tools that enhance productivity and daily life. Lancaster County's Economic Divide and Holiday Retail: Colleague Jim McTague reports from Lancaster County, highlighting the economic divide between flush Baby Boomers and struggling younger generations, observing strong holiday retail activity exemplified by crowded venues like Shady Maple and a proliferation of Amazon delivery trucks, suggesting the economy remains afloat despite challenges. La Scala's Season Opening and Milan's Christmas Atmosphere: Colleague Lorenzo Fiori describes attending the season opening at La Scala, featuring a dramatic Russian opera that audiences connected to current geopolitical tensions, also noting the festive Christmas atmosphere in Milan and Prime Minister Meloni's continued, albeit non-military, support for Ukraine. SpaceX IPO Rumors and EU Space Regulations: Colleague Bob Zimmerman discusses rumors of a SpaceX IPO and new scientific strategies for using Starship for Mars exploration, reporting on the Pentagon's certification requirements for Blue Origin's New Glenn and critiquing proposed EU space laws that could impose bureaucratic hurdles on international private space companies. Mapping the Sun's Corona and Rethinking Ice Giants: Colleague Bob Zimmerman details scientific advances including mapping the sun's corona and rethinking Uranus and Neptune as having rocky interiors rather than just ice, mentioning discoveries regarding supernova composition, the lack of supermassive black holes in small galaxies, and new images of Mars' polar ice layers. "The Incident" of 1641 and Charles I's Failed Plot: Colleague Jonathan Healey narrates "The Incident" of 1641, a failed plot by Charles I to arrest Scottish Covenanter leaders, explaining that the conspiracy's exposure and Charles's subsequent denial destroyed his political standing in Scotland, forcing him to concede power to the Scottish Parliament and weakening his position before the English Civil War. The Prelude to the English Civil War: Colleague Jonathan Healey discusses the prelude to the English Civil War, detailing the power struggles between Charles I and the Commons and Lords, explaining the execution of the King's advisor Strafford, noting Charles's regret and the rising influence of reformists who feared royal tyranny and supported impeachment. The Junto and Puritan Influence in Parliament: Colleague Jonathan Healey describes the political geography of London, introducing the "Junto," a reformist party coordinating between Parliament's houses, analyzing the influence of Puritans and key opposition figures like John Pym and Mandeville who strategically challenged Charles I's authority regarding church reform and arbitrary taxation. The Grand Remonstrance and Popular Politics: Colleague Jonathan Healey explains the "Grand Remonstrance," a document used by the Junto to rally public support against the King, highlighting how rising literacy and the printing press fueled popular politics in London, while also discussing Queen Henrietta Maria's political acumen and Catholic faith amidst the growing conflict. Critiquing Isolationism and the Risks of Disengagement: Colleague Henry Sokolski critiques isolationist arguments, comparing current sentiments to pre-WWII attitudes, warning against relying solely on missile defense bubbles and discussing the distinct threats posed by Russia and China, emphasizing that US disengagement could lead to global instability and unchecked nuclear proliferation. Saudi Uranium Enrichment and Proliferation Risks: Colleague Henry Sokolski discusses the risks of allowing Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium, fearing it creates a bomb-making option, warning that making exceptions for Saudi Arabia could trigger a proliferation cascade among neighbors like Turkey and Egypt, undermining global non-proliferation efforts amidst rising tensions involving Russia and NATO. The Historical Context of Humphrey's Executor: Colleague Richard Epstein analyzes the historical context of Humphrey's Executor, explaining how the administrative state grew from the 1930s, detailing FDR's attempt to politicize independent commissions and the Supreme Court's justification, arguing that while constitutionally questionable, long-standing prescription has solidified these agencies' legal status over time. Presidential Power and Independent Agency Dismissals: Colleague Richard Epstein discusses current Supreme Court arguments regarding presidential power to fire independent board members, referencing actions by both Trump and Biden, critiquing the politicization of agencies like the FTC under Lina Khan and warning that unchecked executive authority to dismiss advisory boards undermines necessary checks and balances.

As a follow-up to the masterful Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa had a tough road to hoe. It mostly lives up to those lofty expectations, but it also suffers from the same ills that plague most prequels. We essentially knew the titular Furiosa's story. It was told brilliantly through the performance of Charlize Theron. Seeing it fully realized onscreen, as beautiful as it can be, doesn't feel entirely necessary. This only ends one way; we've been privy to that. In the end, your left to wonder whether it would've served this universe better to see what comes next. Why drudge up the past? Critics and audiences, those that actually saw it, loved what Furiosa had to offer. But that aforementioned question must have weighed on the general audience's mind. Grossing more than $200 million less than its predecessor, Furiosa lost a lot of money for WB. It may not have felt necessary, but it certainly deserved a better fate than that. “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” released on January 10, 2025, is the eagerly awaited sequel to the 2018 heist thriller “Den of Thieves.” Directed by Christian Gudegast, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul T. Scheuring, the film reunites stars Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr., reprising their roles as the relentless Los Angeles Sheriff's Department detective Nicholas “Big Nick” O'Brien and the cunning thief Donnie Wilson. This installment shifts the action from the gritty streets of Los Angeles to the sun-drenched, glamorous locales of Europe, delivering a high-stakes diamond heist narrative inspired by the real-life 2003 Antwerp diamond robbery. Produced by Lionsgate, alongside Diamond Film Productions, G-BASE, and Tucker Tooley Entertainment, the film blends tactical crime drama with a newfound lightness, trading the original's brooding intensity for a more playful, buddy-cop dynamic. The story picks up with Big Nick, still reeling from personal turmoil, including a recent divorce, as he tracks Donnie across Europe. Donnie, now entangled with the notorious Panther mafia, is orchestrating a daring heist targeting the world's largest diamond exchange in Nice, France. The plot kicks off with a pulse-pounding opening in Antwerp, where Donnie and the Panther Crew, led by the enigmatic Jovanna (Evin Ahmad), steal a rare red diamond, setting the stage for a cat-and-mouse game. Nick, gone rogue from his department, pursues Donnie not just to apprehend him but with a surprising twist of intent—teaming up for the heist. Their unlikely alliance, cemented over drunken shawarma and banter about French cuisine, injects the film with a shaggy charm reminiscent of early “Fast & Furious” films, though it's layered with Gudegast's signature procedural detail.Spanning 144 minutes, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” luxuriates in its slow-burn buildup, dedicating much of its runtime to the meticulous planning of the diamond center break-in. From camera cycles to fake identities, the film revels in heist logistics, punctuated by tension from vengeful ex-crew members and a Sardinian mobster demanding the stolen diamond's return. The payoff arrives in the second hour with a gripping infiltration sequence and a standout car chase through the French Alps, evoking Michael Mann's “Heat” and John Frankenheimer's “Ronin.” Butler's Nick, hanging off Donnie's getaway car, firing at pursuers, anchors the visceral action, shot with a metallic realism by cinematographer Terry Stacey using Arri Alexa cameras. The cast expands with strong supporting turns from Evin Ahmad as a potential love interest for Nick, Salvatore Esposito as a mafia heavy, and Meadow Williams reprising her role from the first film. Filmed across Tenerife, the Canary Islands, and the UK from April to July 2023, the production transformed Santa Cruz streets into a French diamond district, enhancing the film's European flair. Kevin Matley's score replaces Cliff Martinez's from the original, adding a fresh sonic pulse to the Mediterranean setting.Critically, the film sits at a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, lauded for Butler's charisma and the thrilling set pieces, though some, like Rolling Stone's David Fear, critique its convoluted plot and overlong runtime. Grossing $57.3 million worldwide against a $40 million budget, it topped the U.S. box office with a $15 million opening weekend. Now streaming on Netflix as of March 20, 2025, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” refines its predecessor's macho ethos into a more elegant, if familiar, thriller—leaving the door ajar for a third installment, already greenlit, set in Africa.

Inflation Adjusted US Domestic Box Office for the last 25 years:  Summary: In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the box office experienced significant growth, with yearly receipts reaching new heights. For instance, in 2002, domestic box office revenues hit a peak of approximately $16 billion when adjusted for inflation.  Since then, total box office receipts have fluctuated, especially reacting to global events, such as the 2008 financial crisis, which led to a decrease in consumer spending on entertainment. The last two decades have seen a dominance of comic book adaptations and franchise films (e.g., Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, etc.) at the box office. These films often dominate annual box office charts, with some grossing over a billion dollars domestically. Sequels, remakes, and adaptations became staples as studios sought safe investments. The trend has been reinforced by the success of properties with established fan bases. The rise of streaming services (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) has changed how audiences consume films, often leading to decreased box office attendance for certain genres, particularly dramas and non-franchise films. The pandemic and writers strike severely impacted the film industry, with theaters closing and productions halting. The domestic box office fell dramatically in 2020. This decline prompted many studios to rethink release strategies, leading to more simultaneous releases on streaming platforms. Post-pandemic, there has been a gradual recovery, with some films performing exceptionally well, while smaller films continue to face challenges in recapturing pre-pandemic audience levels.

Sahara was meant to be the next big adventure franchise—an Indiana Jones for a new era. Its main character—Dirk Pitt played by Matthew McConaughey—was the lead in a series of novels by Clive Cussler. The material was there to be mined, but the audience was not. Despite its inspiration, Sahara could not match the popularity of the novels. Grossing just $119 million worldwide, it took quite the hit at the box office, especially since the cost of the film ballooned during production. The reasons for why those costs went off the rails are plentiful and detailed extensively in an old LA Times piece. Its failure aside, there is some fun to be had. With exciting set pieces and that classic McConaughey charm, this should not have been the flop it was. Now, sit back, quench your thirst for adventure with a Shiner Bock from the Spoetzl Brewery, and don't drink that well water! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Chumpzilla are pulling a Panama to evade the fuzz! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Adventure has a new name ... Dirk Pitt! Your Name[b] (Japanese: 君の名は。, Hepburn: Kimi no Na wa) is a 2016 Japanese animated romantic fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Toho. It depicts the story of high school students Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu, who suddenly begin to swap bodies despite having never met, unleashing chaos on each other's lives. The film was inspired by the frequency of natural disasters in Japan. Your Name premiered at the 2016 Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 3, 2016, and was theatrically released in Japan on August 26, 2016; it was released internationally by several distributors in 2017. It features the voices of Ryunosuke Kamiki and Mone Kamishiraishi, with animation direction by Masashi Ando, character design by Masayoshi Tanaka, and its orchestral score and soundtrack composed by Radwimps. A light novel of the same name, also written by Shinkai, was published a month prior to the film's premiere. The film received widespread critical acclaim, with praise for its story, animation, music, visuals, and emotional weight. Grossing over US$382 million worldwide, it became the third highest-grossing Japanese film of all time, breaking numerous box office records, unadjusted for inflation. It received several accolades, including the Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, the 49th Sitges Film Festival, and the 71st Mainichi Film Awards; it was also nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year. A live-action remake is in development at Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions. Mitsuha Miyamizu is a high school student in the rural town of Itomori, Japan. Bored of the town, she wishes to be a Tokyo boy in her next life. Soon, she begins to intermittently switch bodies with Taki Tachibana, a boy from Tokyo. On certain days, Taki and Mitsuha wake up in each other's bodies and must live the entire day as the other, reverting when they go to sleep at night. The two set up ground rules for sharing their bodies, communicating via messages on paper, their phones, and their skin. Mitsuha (in Taki's body) sets Taki up on a date with his coworker, Miki Okudera, while Taki (in Mitsuha's body) helps Mitsuha become more popular at school. While in Mitsuha's body, Taki accompanies Mitsuha's grandmother Hitoha and younger sister Yotsuha to the Shinto shrine on a mountain near Itomori, leaving an offering of kuchikamizake made with Mitsuha's spit. Hitoha explains that god is the ruler over both time and the connections between humans. Mitsuha tells Taki that the comet Tiamat is expected to pass nearest to Earth on the day of the autumn festival. The next day, Taki goes on the date with Miki in his own body; Miki enjoys the date but says she can tell Taki is preoccupied with someone else. Realizing he is falling for Mitsuha, Taki attempts to call her on the phone but cannot reach her. The body-switching stops as inexplicably as it started. Plot[edit]

Written and directed by Taran Killam, Killing Gunther is a mockumentary centering on a group of incompetent assassins who assemble to take down the world's best hitman. It is a wonderfully comedic and weird film that was unfortunately slept on by both critics and viewers. Grossing less than $200,000, Killing Gunther never found much of an audience. But it should have. Its cast of eclectic characters do more than enough to buoy the conceit across its modest 92-minute runtime. Throw in a delightfully off-the-wall turn from Arnold Schwarzenegger (he sings a country song!) as the titular Gunther and you've got yourself a damn good time. Now, sit back, sing some karaoke with a Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA from Stone Brewing, and hope Ashley gets well soon! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Bling Blake, and Capt. Listen to us as we discuss the 2002 film 28 Days Later. If you would like to give us feedback on how were doing follow us at: https://beacons.ai/senornerdpodcast https://www.instagram.com/senornerdpodcast/ @senornerdpod on Twitter 28 Days Later is a 2002 British post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. It stars Cillian Murphy as a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover the accidental release of a highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus has caused the breakdown of society. Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson appear in supporting roles.Garland took inspiration from George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead film series and John Wyndham's 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids for the film's post-apocalyptic story. Filming took place in various locations in the United Kingdom in 2001. The crew filmed for brief periods during early mornings and temporarily closed streets to capture recognisable and typically busy areas when they were deserted. John Murphy composed an original soundtrack for the film, with other instrumental songs by Brian Eno, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and other artists also being featured.28 Days Later was released on 1 November 2002 to critical acclaim and financial success. Grossing more than $82.7 million worldwide on its modest budget of $8 million, it became one of the most profitable horror films of 2002. Reviewers praised Boyle's direction, the cast's performances, Garland's screenplay, the atmosphere and soundtrack. Despite Boyle not considering it a zombie film, 28 Days Later is credited with reinvigorating the zombie genre of horror film and influencing a revival in the decade after its release, with its fast-running infected and character-driven drama.[3][4] Since its release, it has been featured in several "best-of" film lists and maintained a following, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2020s.The film was followed by 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, a 2007 graphic novel titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, which expands on the timeline of the outbreak, and a 2009 to 2011 comic book series titled 28 Days Later.PlotA highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus called the "rage virus" is unleashed in Great Britain after an infected chimpanzee is freed from its cage in a laboratory in Cambridge by a group of eco-terrorists. Within seconds of exposure after freeing the enraged chimp, one of the terrorists succumbs to the virus and immediately infects another. Over the following hours and days, it spreads rapidly and becomes an epidemic, resulting in total societal collapse.
