Doug travels back in time to a world before Insomniac's Spider-Man games to what can only be described as the proof of concept for them... Sunset Overdrive. Does this game hold up after seeing what Insomniac has done since?
A ideia desse episódio é simples: quais jogos gostaríamos de ver ganhando uma sequência? In this episode, I speak with Brad Hendricks, CEO and Founder of Blind Squirrel Entertainment. Brad talks about his path from working with new game technologies to starting his own company after his previous job at Gamebryo ended. He shares how he and his team landed their first project with 2K Games, kickstarting their game development journey before even having a company name :) Brad then reflects on the ups and downs of being a CEO, stressing the need for flexibility and constant learning. We then share practical advice for newcomers, highlighting the importance of perseverance and staying in tune with industry changes. He touches on the challenges studios face, like dropping game dev budgets and the need to be creative and adaptable, plus thoughts on VR, AR, and how AI's evolving. Towards the end Brad gets into some favorite projects, like the highly praised BioShock Remastered, which dramatically boosted BSE's profile. He talks about recent work with Microsoft and Amazon and remains optimistic about the future despite current challenges. We wrap up urging listeners to support each other and stay strong as the game industry recovers through this dramatically difficult period. Bio: A gaming industry veteran with over 25 years of experience, Brad Hendricks is the CEO and Founder of Blind Squirrel Entertainment, a AAA game studio that creates original content and provides full game development services to various publishers and developers. Under his leadership, BSE has become the top collaborator for industry leading titles such as Disney Infinity 3.0, BioShock: Infinite, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Borderlands 2, Sunset Overdrive, and Evolve, to name a few. Sunset Overdrive feels like a game that's been lost to time, doomed to a life of only being mentioned when a new game comes out that reminds people of it, despite being made by one of the industry's heavyweights (Insomniac Games) in the not so distant past. It's got a goofy tone, a bangin punk rock soundtrack, and an exquisite movement system that never gets old, but its mission design starts to wear thin long before the credits roll. During Sony's State of Play February livestream, Rocksteady Studios revealed the first gameplay for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, confirming that it will be a live-service game focused on single-player and co-op gameplay. Playing as one of four members of the Suicide Squad, the players must stop Brainiac's invasion of Metropolis and confront possessed members of the Justice League. In a world dominated by cash-grab, minimum-risk, soul-less, run-of-the-mill, board-of-directors-satisfying, hackneyed, repetitive, loot-box-laden, share-holder-pleasing, item-selling, micro-transaction-loving, DLC-shoving video game titles; it's always a very pleasing, refreshing and quite honestly, surprising moment when you are presented with a sweet sweet anomaly, an exception to that somber reality: A passion project done by some of the best people in the business. You might wonder just how such project would've been greenlit in the current zeitgeist, and the answer would be, probably just because Xbox was extremely desperate back then, and also, possibly out of spite, you know, to Sony. Whatever the reason, we're just happy that we got “Sunset Overdrive”, one of the most underrated titles of the last generation which pulled us out of that clichéd formula of: let's-not-change-it-if-it-sells. Gotta pay respect where it's due, and it was a bold move by Insomniac to develop such an outrageous game, which was, unfortunately, ultimately a commercial failure; though through no fault of its own. However, perhaps this failure paved the way for their next title, “Marvel's Spider-Man”, which took off like a rocket. So join us with a returning guest, Mohammad (from "S02E11 - Saints Row"), in this episode as we discuss and pay the aforementioned respect to Insomniac with a focus on "Sunset Overdrive".

Hey Listener, for the first time in the history of the podcast, I don't have a guest. My wife caught a breakthrough case of Covid and I did to, I just didn't know it at the time of this recording. We are both fully recovered at this time. Because of this I didn't want to bring a guest into the basement this week. Instead I did my first ever solo episode where I recount my 35 year history of playing video games. Topics this week include: My retirement plan is to party hard. The Atari 2600, my new babysitter. Super Mario Bros turns a casual fan into a life long gamer. Metroid wasn't made for 6 year olds. I love games where you get to head kick punk rockers to save the President. Making friends with people that have the consoles you don't have. The Playstation 1 was my system for high school. Picking the wrong skateboarding game. Trying to say SSX is tricky. The PS2 and my love of NCAA Football, the only good thing in my life at that time. Madden is trash. Burnout is my favorite racing franchise of all time. Everyone needs to play Katamari Damacy at least once in their life. Drinking and Karting. Making the jump to the X-Box 360. Getting Red Ringed. The Arkham series. Fallout 3 is in the conversation for my favorite game of all time. Big Daddy subwoofer. Rock Band is my favorite multiplayer game of all time. Shout out Ryan Halter for the PS 3 (and 4) so that I got to play the Last of Us. You should play Cuphead and Sunset Overdrive on the Xbox One. I wish more games had progression systems like Far Cry 3. 40 years old, playing a PS4, and really getting into audio equipment. Doing moonsaults off of towers in Spiderman. Titanfall 2 really makes me want to play Titanfall 3. I'm finally playing The Witcher III. *"I'll Sleep When I'm Dead III" has been postponed to 2022 due to a scheduling conflict.
Jake and Tony break some gems and kick some ass in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. We also take a listener question! We also talk about Crystal Crisis, Titanfall 2, Crown Trick, SkateBird, Sunset Overdrive & the Wolverine game. #propagatethepod Got a game suggestion? This minisode is dedicated to all the games that we (ok, mostly just Rachel) have been playing this summer. Games featured include Ratchet and Clank, A Way Out, It Takes Two, and Scarlet Nexus. We decided to introduce mini-episodes between our regular reviews (which aren't going anywhere, don't worry). Chuck opens by telling me how he tried to reduce the skimp-age on his Panera order. I counter with a tip for reducing the skimpage at Chipotle or other burrito places. Chuck tells me about the Mark Normand documentary he assembled (?) and the Patreon's success. We then talk about our sun-filled weekend. A nice long walk on the bike path, a pool day, some seafood, shaved shoulders, electric bikes, maximum SPF numbers...really getting into a summer feeling! We get WEIRD during this conversation! We then focus on some news, with the renewal of "I Think You Should Leave," the 30 for 30 about Space Jam 2, Rob Zombie's The Munsters, a possible Sunset Overdrive sequel, a new behind-the-scenes of Disney Parks show, and our excitement for Loki and the next Thor movie. I then talk about a woman ghosting me after listening to a previous episode of the podcast. - Brad MP3 Download

On this episode, Bruno & Nick chat about the huge news of multiple founding members of Giant Bomb announcing their departure. Later, the Epic vs. Apple court case ends up revealing way too much confidential information, including Walmart apparently trying to make their own game streaming service! Also, some very cool news in the science field as EVE Online has been put to use towards fighting COVID-19.
