The Author Events Series presents Marlene Daut | The First and Last King of Haiti REGISTER In Conversation with Grace Sanders Johnson Slave, revolutionary, traitor, king, and suicide, Henry Christophe was, in his time, popular and famous the world over. Born in 1767 to an enslaved mother on the Caribbean island of Grenada, Christophe first fought to overthrow the British in North America, before helping his fellow enslaved Africans in Saint-Domingue, as Haiti was then called, to gain their freedom from France. Yet in an incredible twist of fate, Christophe ended up fighting with Napoleon's forces against the very enslaved men and women he had once fought alongside. Later, reuniting with those he had betrayed, he offered to lead them and made himself their king. But it all came to a sudden and tragic end when Christophe--after nine years of his rule as King Henry I--shot himself in the heart, some say with a silver bullet. Why did Christophe turn his back on Toussaint Louverture and the very revolution with which his name is so indelibly associated? How did it come to pass that Christophe found himself accused of participating in the plot to assassinate Haiti's first ruler, Dessalines? What caused Haiti to eventually split into two countries, one ruled by Christophe in the north, who made himself king, the other led by President Pétion in the south? The First and Last King of Haiti is a riveting story of not only geopolitical clashes on a grand scale but also of friendship and loyalty, treachery and betrayal, heroism and strife in an era of revolutionary upheaval. You may have seen the contestants of the Miss Black International Ambassador (MBIA) pageant out in your city or blowing up your feeds with their good deeds. It's all apart of the game. The Miss Black International Ambassador pageant grew from the mind of founder Patrice Harrison's desire to see more Black women become true agents of change in their communities and a need for a Black pageant who was focused on developing ladies who are doing good in their neighborhoods well before stepping on stage. However, the MBIA system has faced some dark days and quite a few obstacles during it's infancy. After a clause in another system's rules prevented women for signing up for her organization. Patrice breaks down this minor inconvenience for us and spills a little tea on her thoughts and feelings surrounding the rule and how she is not allowing it to hinder her leadership. Grab your glass and cheers on Patrice and the entire 15-person Miss Black International Ambassador leadership team and the system as she joins us just hours after announcing the newest location her 2020 international competition: the Bahamas!!!! www.pageantsandprosecco.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pageantsandprosecco/support

Ever wandered what the creative process is behind the films, tv shows and theatre productions you watch? Well, Crew Chats is a podcast going behind the scenes and chatting to the crew that help make these productions. Lizzie Moul grew up on a farm in Lancashire where after a trip to Hampton Court palace and seeing the re-enactors, coupled with watching costume dramas on television, Lizzie became fascinated with the world of costume. Later as a part of school work experience Lizzie had the opportunity to do some work in a wedding dress shop, where she was able to learn how to alter and bead dresses amongst other things. Lizzie went onto study Costume with Performance Design at the Arts University Bournemouth and upon graduating got a job as a trainee on the TV show, ’Lewis’. Ever since, Lizzie has been working in the industry predominately as a costume standby, she has worked on productions such as, ‘Florence Foster Jenkins’, ‘The Durrells in Corfu’, ‘Phantom Thread’, ‘Misbehaviour’ and ‘Men in Black: International’ to name a few. Lizzie's Recommendations: -Cold War -Watchmen -Salt of The Earth -Springwatch (all the watch's!)
"You can't just stand up for yourself. We have to stand up together." Scott Jacobs When it comes to working the brutal hours that have become the norm in entertainment, negotiating for better pay, and fighting to make changes in industry standards, most of us feel helpless (and hopeless) about where to even begin. When I wrote Dear Hollywood: It’s Time For An Intervention About The Hours We Work this past summer, I was surprised to learn the majority of people in Hollywood have no interest in losing their golden time and overtime hours in exchange for shorter, more manageable workdays. While I have no interest in taking money out of anyone’s pocket, I do believe there has to be a better way than working 60+ hours a week and burning ourselves out just to make ends meet. Here’s a crazy thought: What if we were paid for the value we bring to a project rather than the number of hours we clock in each day? Today's guest Scott Jacobs, a longtime editor, AE, and MPEG board member, tackles this question with me. Scott has worked as an editor and assistant editor in both television and feature films on studio features such as The Bourne Legacy, Despicable Me 3, and Men in Black: International, and his TV credits include CBS' Person of Interest, NBC's Parks and Recreation, Fox’s The Orville, and he's currently working on Marvel's WandaVision for Disney+. As a father of two, Scott has had to wrestle with difficult choices between the faster track of being a television editor and the higher negotiating power of feature film assistant editing. His role as a Board Member of the Motion Picture Editor's Guild has made him very aware of the salary discrepancies between features and television along with the major challenge of work-life balance. He feels strongly about advocating for better wages and more sane working hours while also giving people the tools to advocate for themselves. If you’re interested in having a little bit more ammunition to advocate for a job that is more focused on value than hours, and most importantly working smarter (and not harder), my conversation with Scott is a must-listen. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How Scott went from video game junkie to finding a passion for film editing. Why he wanted to get a Masters from AFI and why he insisted on starting at the bottom of the career ladder when he graduated. His surprising strategy for networking and making connections right out of school in 2006. How he got his first job as a Post Production Assistant four months out of college. What connections and skills enabled Scott to jump back and forth between television and film. Why assistant editors in television are paid unfairly and should be paid commensurate with experience. KEY TAKEAWAY: Assistants in features have negotiating power (those in TV do not). Scott's candid thoughts on why the union can't negotiate making shorter working hours part of the contract. His plea for greater member involvement in order to negotiate change in the union. The many factors that led to Scott’s decision to go back to assisting in features rather than look for his second editing job in television. KEY TAKEAWAY: Learning the difference between external success and fulfillment is the key to good decision making. Why going after happiness before success is the better route. What Scott loves about the Peloton and how it's improved his life. Scott's Advice for making it in Hollywood...(I did not pay him to say this!) [optin-monster slug="u1u6n4yv97rxxz4icynf"] Guest Bio: Originally from the North suburbs of Chicago, Scott Jacobs attended Western Michigan University where he was studying theater and vocal performance. While he was losing the love for performing, he wasn’t losing the love of wanting to be in the entertainment industry. Upon taking an introductory film course, Scott watched Baz Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge!. What captivated him the most were the visual effects and the editing. After reading more about film editing and discovering that the job combined his love of technology and theater, he knew that editing is what he wanted to do with his life. After his discovery, he taught himself iMovie, then Final Cut Pro, and finally Avid. This eventually led to Scott attending the AFI Masters in Film Editing program from 2005-2007. Since graduating, he has been fortunate enough to work on studio features such as The Bourne Legacy, Despicable Me 3, and Men in Black: International. Some of his TV credits include CBS' Person of Interest, NBC's Parks and Recreation, and Fox’s The Orville. Currently, Scott is thrilled to be working on Marvel's WandaVision coming to Disney+ in January 2021. Scott has also been serving on the Motion Picture Editors Guild's Board of Directors since 2017. He hopes to one day sit alongside the great film editors that have come before him and inspire others as they have inspired him. With James back, we finally finish playing catch up with franchise installments released while we were in the MCU with the already forgotten Men in Black: International. A film who's troubled production is far more interesting than anything that happens in it. Which is a tragedy considering its two fantastic lead actors.

Men in Black: International (2019) was 2019’s “How DARE you, Hollywood?!” critical dog pile where everyone tried to outdo each other to come up with a way to explain how offensive this film was to humanity and that nothing worse has ever been produced. As per usual, that’s all nonsense. This movie is totally fine. The post BMFcast Extra 153 - Men in Black International first appeared on Bad Movie Fiends - The BMFcast.
Kas kopīgs tādām filmām kā "Guardians of the Galaxy", "Mission: Impossible – Fallout", "Men in Black: International", "Doctor Strange", "Murder on the Orient Express", "Beauty and the Beast" un gaidāmajai "The King's Man"?

Ps Ryan shares about 'Purpose' from the movie Men in Black: International
This week's episode is on Cabin in the Woods, or should we call it the movie of a thousand movies? The film was written by Joss Wheadon (Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) and Drew Goddard (Daredevil, Cloverfield, Angel). The due apparently bunkered down in a hotel for three days to write the initial draft of the script. The film stars a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth (Ghostbusters, Rush, Men in Black: International) as "the athlete." The "virgin" is played by Kristen Connolly (Zoo, Evil, Whispers). The "fool" is played by Fran Kranz (Bloodsucking Bastards, Dollhouse, JourneyQuest). The "scholar" is Jesse Williams (Grey's Anatomy). Lastly, Anna Hutchinson (Power Rangers Jungle Fury, Spartacus) Two classic character actors complete the general framework of the film as the puppetmasters, orchestrating the doom of our campers: Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, Step Brothers, Let Me In) and Bradley Whitford (Get Out, The Handmaid's Tale, Robocop 3). After establishing the narrative of a group of college co-eds going to a secluded cabin for the weekend, we find that all is not what it seems... Even after being accosted by a deranged gas station attendant, the team pushes on for the promise of a relaxing weekend getaway. Through an elaborate series of events, the group ends up in the basement where they unwittingly choose the method of their own demise. In this scene alone there are references to so many iconic horror movies and moments. There is Evil Dead, both in setting and through props, but there is the werewolf, wraiths, mutants as seen in The Hills Have Eyes by Wes Craven, a lemarchand's box referencing the Hellraiser franchise with its Lament Configuration, mummy, merman, scarecrow folk, and a snowman. They ultimately choose the Redneck Murder Family, which is of course a reference to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wrong Turn, and Hatchet. Later, we see on screen including an alien beast, dismemeberment goblins, sugarplum fairy, blob, unicorn, zombies, a "dragon bat," a giant snake, and so many others. You find that this is all part of some ritual to sate the blood lust of The Ancient Ones. These malevolent pseudo-deities are meant to represent the audience and our craving for new methods the macabre, madness, and mammaries. On the show, we even talk about the novelization and the visual companion, which revealed more monstrosities. The best non-movie monsters are undoubtedly the "snake pubic hair woman" and "woman with a toothed vagina." We discuss a potential superhero-style team-up for these two. This week's "Hidden Track" is Paddle Cell with their song, Ghost Girl. http://www.paddlecell.de/ If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Two famous films get sequels this week. Doctor Sleep is more unexpected of the two, catching up with Danny Torrance several decades after the events of The Shining. This film adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 novel is written and directed by Mike Flanagan, and attempts to reconcile the differences between The Shining novel and Stanley Kubrick’s film from 1980. Men in Black: International is the latest instalment in the dependably popular franchise, but there’s a new double act at the center this time around. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson team up once more after the successful Thor: Ragnarok. As always, there’s also the latest movie news, box office and rental charts, and our Take Five movie quiz.
