I love American homefront stories from WWII. Make them epistolary novels and, well, that makes them just about perfect. Listen in to learn more about Caitlin Miller's Our Yellow Tape Letters. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. When Caitlin Miller said she was inspired by Amy Lynn Green's Things We Didn't Say AND that Green endorsed the novel, well... I knew this book would be excellent! I've already started reading it, and so far it doesn't disappoint. Our Yellow Tape Letters by Caitlin Miller Just days away from Germany's surrender, Lucy Skyes never expects to receive the same telegram that thousands of families across the world have since the start of World War Two: a notice of her brother's death in the service of his country. While reeling from the shock of losing her best friend, Lucy receives a letter from someone who knew her brother and can tell her two things she desperately wants to know: What her brother's life was like in the army and who is responsible for his death. Jeremiah Sparrow wakes up in an army hospital, unable to remember what put him there, why he can't hear anything, or who he lost. When memories resurface of a plane crash, a parachute, and a friend, Jeremiah harbors deep guilt and secrets. Jeremiah sends a letter of his own to Lucy—and his words open a door that may cost him more than he realizes. Everyone has secrets to unearth and stories to tell. War, loss, and letters—they are a lot like yellow tape: Once you cross that line, there is no going back. And sometimes, what you find on the other side looks nothing like you imagined it to. We all know that self-care and preventing burnout as mental health practitioners is important, but how do we truly care for ourselves and our clients, particularly in rural and regional areas where there can be added complexities? And is it possible to go beyond that to thriving in mental health practice? Join Peregrine research associate, Dr Caitlin Miller, as she speaks with John Dean (District Clinical Leader and Senior Psychologist in Murrumbidgee), Nikki Butler (trainer and director of Nikki Butler consulting), and our own Brittany Smith (Clinical Psychology Registrar and Local Project Officer) to dive into these questions. We would like to dedicate this episode to our friend and fellow Team BU member, DeLorean, whose wife, Mandy recently lost her battle with cancer. Caitlin Miller lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and rescue greyhound. She loves running but almost gave up on it after a debilitating lower back injury. Not soon after a long recovery and getting back to running she learned about the depths of grief and running through it. We hope Caitlin's story will inspire others and instill perseverance in those struggling to get back to doing what they love. We are so fortunate to connect with amazing people through this podcast. Caitlin is full of self-awareness and wisdom. She has turned to writing to help her get through hard things. Below are two paragraphs from Caitlin about being injured and getting back to running and running through grief. “To injured runners out there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know it's hard to see it and my closest friends will tell you I didn't always believe them. On your best days, it'll shine bright. On the painful days, it's really dim. But if you work hard, you can get through it. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, especially on the days when you don't.” “If you're grieving and you're not where I am yet, it's okay. It takes time and everyone is different. While you might want to rush the process and get to the part where you feel okay, unfortunately, you can't. You must just sit in it and feel it all. My hope for you is that someday you will experience peace and be able to smile and laugh when you think of your loved one. I am sending you strength in your journey.” IG- @_caitlinmoser

Many mental health practitioners will have experienced a client who is hesitant to use telehealth services because they feel the connection and therapeutic relationship won't be the same compared to in person sessions. But is this actually accurate? If we do need to use telehealth, how can we ensure our relationship with clients is strong? In this episode, Dr Caitlin Miller interviews Ross Jacobs, Clinical Implementation Lead for NSW/ACT at Orygen and Julia Reynolds, Clinical Psychologist at Australian National University, about using telehealth and digital resources. They talk about setting a frame when working with telehealth, engaging different types of clients, and how you can use digital interventions alongside your practice to provide support for your clients.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A talk-back with the cast of You Better Sit Down: Tales from My Parents' Divorce kicks off this week's episode. The show, which recently completed its New York premiere at the Flea Theater, featured actors Matt Maher, Caitlin Miller, Jennifer R. Morris, and Robbie Collier Sublett, who all interviewed their parents, and each plays his or her own parent (or parents). In the talk-back, they discuss the process of creating the show, talking about these topics with their parents, and their parents' reactions to the show. Then, The Flea Theater's resident acting company, The Bats, presents a short piece created from online and live audience responses that they put together during You Better Sit Down and performed after the play on the same night. Next is a monologue crafted from responses by our R&D Group artist Mia Rovegno and performed by Associate Artist Dan Domingues. The episode closes out with a song written and performed by Matt Berger. The Civilians' first show ever was Canard, Canard, Goose, created in 2001 to explore alleged geese abuse in the Adirondacks. The investigation, inspired by a rumor about the geese in the feature film Fly Away Home, brought up questions about home, truth, and how we know we know - all themes that were particularly relevant for these New York artists in the post-9/11 winter of 2001. This episode is the concert version of the entire show performed at Joe's Pub in 2011 for our tenth anniversary season performed by Aysan Celik, Matthew Dellapina, Greg McFadden, Jennifer R. Morris, Brandon Miller, Caitlin Miller, and Maria Elena Ramirez. Jenny and Aysan were members of the original cast in 2002. The play includes songs by Michael Friedman, and marks the first show for which he ever wrote songs.
