New figures show the number of homeless pensioners has more than doubled in recent years, with rising rents and house prices leaving many older people vulnerable to losing their homes. At the same time, new frontline supports are emerging here in Clare. Joining us now are Neil Garvey, CEO of Midwest Simon, and Fiona Faulkes, who spent five years sleeping rough and now runs a dedicated mobile homeless shower facility in Ennis, to talk about what they're seeing on the ground and what needs to change. We're shining a light on the incredible contribution older volunteers make right across County Clare. The Clare Older People's Volunteer Recognition Awards are back for 2026, and this year they're a little different, with a renewed focus on not just the volunteers themselves, but also the community groups they support. Applications open this Friday, and the awards will be celebrated in Glór on the 3rd of June. For more on this, Alan Morrissey spoke with Age Friendly Programme Manager, Shanelle Warin and Chair of the Clare Older People's Volunteer Recognition Awards Sub-Committee, Mike Cusack.

Send us a textIn this solo episode, Kara explores the fascinating research behind how daily reading may support a longer, healthier life. She breaks down the landmark Yale study showing that people who read books for just 30 minutes a day lived an average of 23 months longer than non-readers, examines why book-length reading provides unique cognitive benefits, and discusses what current science says about print books versus audiobooks.Listeners will walk away with a deeper understanding of how reading strengthens the brain, builds cognitive reserve, and may contribute to healthy aging - plus practical ideas for fitting more reading into everyday life.Episode Highlights:• Reading books for just 30 minutes a day was linked to 23 extra months of life, on average.• Frequent reading is associated with reduced cognitive decline across multiple long-term studies.• Print or visual reading tends to support stronger comprehension and memory - key components of brain reserve.• Audiobooks activate many of the same language and emotional brain networks, though the depth of processing may differ.• Regardless of format, regular engagement with stories supports cognitive health.Resources Mentioned:Episode 116: Do Audiobooks Count as Reading?Bavishi, Slade & Levy (2016). He says, “I know I should not feel guilty. But here I am, (I will be 90 in September 2025), happy, healthy, quite sure I will not wake up on the wrong side of the grass tomorrow. And every day is a miracle, another opportunity to produce, create, learn, and hopefully do something good for myself and others. On top of that, I have no regrets, no sad memories that did not spring from great happiness. Why was I given this gift? I thank my creator every day and know tomorrow will be superb.Even if you are perfect—Living, Giving, loving—someone you know, and love needs the friendly advice found in EMBRACE YOUR AGE. You can be better than ever. I really believe that friends. Every day is a miracle. I want you to feel that joy every morning and know that someone will think of you today. Living is a gift, an opportunity to contribute, produce and share. EMBRACE YOUR AGE will also illuminate your self-doubts and insecurities with some direct calls to action.Imagine the honor of being able to live and work within your passion. That is my life. Besides earning a living at the keyboard, I have had the absolute joy of creating three books. The first two are novels—birth, death, romance, sex, Broadway, travel, marriage, divorce, high and low life, wonderful stories to curl up with or enjoy someday on the big screen or TV. And more recently, a non-fiction book that speaks directly to Dear Old Friends, and lovingly, but pointedly, reminds them that today is the oldest & youngest they will ever be.He is the author of "LOVING LONGEVITY: Make your next years your best years." https://www.jamesbflaherty.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org
Scientists are beginning to understand that ageing is not a simply linear process. Instead, recent research appears to show that we age in three accelerated bursts; at about 40, 60 and 80 years old. To find out what might be going on, Ian Sample hears from Prof Michael Snyder, the director of the Center for Genomics and Personalised Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, who explains what the drivers of these bursts of ageing could be, and how they might be counteracted. We’re only a day away from the New York City Democratic Primary for mayor and early voting turnout is the largest in years. No matter what happens, Zohran Kwame Mamdani has already won the race. Mamdani’s candidacy has galvanized the national media in a way that a local primary race has rarely ever done. CNN, MSNBC, Zeteo, Hasan Piker, MeidasTouch, Pod Save America, The Breakfast Club, Bulwark Podcast and, of course, UNFTR (ahem) have all featured Mamdani. In some ways, he might be even more popular as a national political figure among leftists than he is among New York City voters. We’ll find out in a matter of days. There are those, however, who see this race as an isolated case and in no way a bellwether in a broader political sense. They would be wrong. Barcelona in Spain is famous for its beautiful streets, lined with tall apartment buildings. But the architecture is a problem for many people who have lived for years in upstairs apartments but who now find the stairs unmanageable. In 2008, a survey found that in one district there were 300 people who could not leave their homes alone. A group of volunteers decided to do something about this and got hold of a special wheelchair with caterpillar tracks, so it can be used to take people up and down stairs. After an initial pilot scheme they launched a local service called “Let's Go Down to the Street”, to help elderly residents go shopping or meet up with friends. Sixteen years on, the service is offered across the city.Plus we visit a home for senior citizens in an unlikely location: a university campus.
