He says, “I know I should not feel guilty. But here I am, (I will be 90 in September 2025), happy, healthy, quite sure I will not wake up on the wrong side of the grass tomorrow. And every day is a miracle, another opportunity to produce, create, learn, and hopefully do something good for myself and others. On top of that, I have no regrets, no sad memories that did not spring from great happiness. Why was I given this gift? I thank my creator every day and know tomorrow will be superb.Even if you are perfect—Living, Giving, loving—someone you know, and love needs the friendly advice found in EMBRACE YOUR AGE. You can be better than ever. I really believe that friends. Every day is a miracle. I want you to feel that joy every morning and know that someone will think of you today. Living is a gift, an opportunity to contribute, produce and share. EMBRACE YOUR AGE will also illuminate your self-doubts and insecurities with some direct calls to action.Imagine the honor of being able to live and work within your passion. That is my life. Besides earning a living at the keyboard, I have had the absolute joy of creating three books. The first two are novels—birth, death, romance, sex, Broadway, travel, marriage, divorce, high and low life, wonderful stories to curl up with or enjoy someday on the big screen or TV. And more recently, a non-fiction book that speaks directly to Dear Old Friends, and lovingly, but pointedly, reminds them that today is the oldest & youngest they will ever be.He is the author of "LOVING LONGEVITY: Make your next years your best years." https://www.jamesbflaherty.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org
Mike Hamm is a 87-year-old veteran with dementia. He stayed indoors in the cool air conditioning while outside temperature ticked to 91 degrees on Thursday. He and his wife, Sharon, have been married for 59 years. They're helping each other, so they don't overheat.Mike usually sits in his La-Z-Boy and uses a walker to get around. There's a small license plate on his walker that reads “Too cool 4 u.”About the weather, he said, “It's been like this for a long time in the 90s and it's supposed to get to the 100s pretty soon, and I don't think I'll go out much.”Mike didn't seem to notice the increase in temperature outside but appreciated helping hands, including his wife. “My wife, too, she makes me drink a lot of ice water.”The veteran spends most of his days inside watching TV and reading the newspaper.Sharon said, “He rarely goes out, but he insists on doing that one thing — go out and get the mail — because he wants to do everything he's used to.”Sharon goes out of their home more often, and she said the heat makes it hard. “It's harder to breathe. I do know the older one gets, your body starts conking in different types of places. Besides the breathing, you get tired of walking.”Dr. Chris Ross, an emergency room physician from Community Health Network, said Thursday that older people are prone to heat stress because their bodies have a harder time adjusting to sudden temperatures.Ross said heat exhaustion can be fatal if not treated promptly. He said, “If you're confused, vomiting, sweating profusely and then not sweating anymore, those are the reasons to look for help.”Ross had this advice for caretakers: “Take special care to make sure that the people you're caring for have plenty of water access, to bathrooms. If they have issues like dementia and begin to wander, to make sure the doors are locked so they don't get outside and get stuck outside because that's when they could really get into trouble.”Mike and Sharon have help, Senior Helpers, a home care service that helps them manage their well-being in the heat. Marta Guinn, director of operations, said, “Any clients with dementia, their short-term memory is gone, so we just suggest — we don't ever make a client do anything — we just suggest the same thing over and over again. ‘Mr. Hamm, would you like some water?' ‘Mr. Hamm, we haven't had a drink. How about I'm going to get a drink from my water, would you like to take a drink out of yours?' Lots of reminding.”Guinn added that as people get older, their bodies don't self-regulate as well as in the past, and some people may not realized they're overheating.Senior Helpers also recommends checking in with older parents, grandparents, neighbors or friends to make sure they have what they need during the heat wave.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Scientists are beginning to understand that ageing is not a simply linear process. Instead, recent research appears to show that we age in three accelerated bursts; at about 40, 60 and 80 years old. To find out what might be going on, Ian Sample hears from Prof Michael Snyder, the director of the Center for Genomics and Personalised Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, who explains what the drivers of these bursts of ageing could be, and how they might be counteracted. It's described as the ticking timebomb of the housing crisis, many people wonder if they'll ever be able to buy a home and how they'll afford to pay rising rents in retirement. With housing charities and groups like Age Action sounding alarm bells over a rising number of pensioners facing homelessness now, John Cooke meets some of those affected.
ALONE has just released its largest-ever Cost of Living Survey, and the results are deeply concerning. Older people across Ireland are under serious financial strain — many are skipping meals, avoiding heating their homes, and facing growing isolation. Joining us to discuss the findings and the urgent need for support is Frank Dillon, Head of Communications at ALONE.
We’re only a day away from the New York City Democratic Primary for mayor and early voting turnout is the largest in years. No matter what happens, Zohran Kwame Mamdani has already won the race. Mamdani’s candidacy has galvanized the national media in a way that a local primary race has rarely ever done. There are those, however, who see this race as an isolated case and in no way a bellwether in a broader political sense. They would be wrong. Barcelona in Spain is famous for its beautiful streets, lined with tall apartment buildings. But the architecture is a problem for many people who have lived for years in upstairs apartments but who now find the stairs unmanageable. In 2008, a survey found that in one district there were 300 people who could not leave their homes alone. A group of volunteers decided to do something about this and got hold of a special wheelchair with caterpillar tracks, so it can be used to take people up and down stairs. After an initial pilot scheme they launched a local service called “Let's Go Down to the Street”, to help elderly residents go shopping or meet up with friends. Sixteen years on, the service is offered across the city.Plus we visit a home for senior citizens in an unlikely location: a university campus. The Government is preparing major changes to planning laws, including proposals to allow attic conversions, garden cabins, and home extensions for elderly relatives without planning permission. It's a move aimed at relieving pressure on the housing system and speeding up development. The chair of the Clare branch of the Irish Kidney association has been recognised for his immense volunteering efforts to multiple organisations at an event hosted by Clare's Older People Council. The event was held yesterday afternoon in Hotel Woodstock in the county town. The ceremony was attended by almost 200 people and included a special guest speech from singer and Clare Age Friendly Ambassador, Mike Hanrahan. The Clare Older People's Volunteer of the Year Award was won by John Logan, in absentia, for his work with the Ennis Lyons Club since its inception in 1976 with John now the only surviving active charter member. Another plaque was handed out to celebrate the 10th iteration of the awards. Disability rights activist Dermot Hayes was the recipient for his unwavering commitment in recent times to both the Clare branch of the Irish Kidney Association and the Clare Leader Forum. Dermot says he was in complete shock to be given the award. The chair of the Clare Older People's Council says it's a massive achievement to hit the milestone of its 10th anniversary of the awards. While the OPC has been in existence for longer than that time, it received formal backing and support from Clare County Council a decade ago through the Age Friendly Programme. Mary O'Callaghan says it has gone from strength to strength in that time. Meanwhile, a key theme of the ceremony was the hard work of all the nominees to bridge the gap between generations and encourage more young people to get involved with their respective organisation on a voluntary basis. Clare County Council's Age Friendly Programme Manager, Shanelle Waring, says rewarding people for their dedication highlights the work they do and encourages more people to give their time on a voluntary basis.

For more fantastic stories, visit Carol on Medium.com. This story breaks from my humor story tradition but is relevant today and is something I experience regularly. I've been approached on Facebook, Quora, and X (Twitter). It's annoying because it takes time to discern if it's a scam. Sometimes, I know upfront, like the old dudes claiming they're widowed, former military personnel, or military personnel but have incomplete profiles and few posts. I get those on Facebook. X (Twitter) and places like Quora are harder to root out. But the moment they tell me how beautiful I am, offer to lend me one of their many cars, or say they want to be my "friend," I know for sure they're a scammer. I've catalogued some of my experiences on my YouTube channel in shorts, https://youtube.com/shorts/FO8pb3-bpY0?si=fRC0cRAr3PYm9KRu and https://youtube.com/shorts/BXBmEtAKU1U?si=69LkdMp79FmZeowk.

Gerascophobia is the fear of aging or getting older. This fear, according to today's podcast guest, Kelly Tremblay, PhD, can not only make us sick, but can also be combatted by engaging in wellness activities such as book clubs or walking clubs—or even by listening to an inspiring podcast. What's more, doing the work to counter the fear can actually help change the trajectory of our health as we get older. Tremblay, who is an audiologist and neuroscientist, and who co-authored the World Health Organization's (WHO) new guidelines on integrated care for older people, examines the impact of neuroscience on longevity how it has shaped her life and work. As Trembly sits down with Susan Ryan to talk about her research in neuroplasticity, hearing loss, and communication disorders, they discuss her work as a professional coach, healthy workplaces, and how her personal life has coincided with her work. More about Dr. Tremblay's work on WHO's guidelines on integrated care for older people: https://canadianaudiologist.ca/world-health-organizations-guidelines-on-integrated-care-for-older-people-icope/

In this episode from September, Madeleine Finlay speaks to Dr Saul Newman, an interdisciplinary researcher at University College London and the University of Oxford, who has recently won an Ig Nobel prize – given to scientific research that ‘first makes people laugh, and then makes them think' – for his work showing that many claims of people living extraordinarily long lives come from places with short lifespans, no birth certificates, and where clerical errors and pension fraud abound.
