For more fantastic stories, visit Carol on Medium.com. This story breaks from my humor story tradition but is relevant today and is something I experience regularly. I've been approached on Facebook, Quora, and X (Twitter). It's annoying because it takes time to discern if it's a scam. Sometimes, I know upfront, like the old dudes claiming they're widowed, former military personnel, or military personnel but have incomplete profiles and few posts. I get those on Facebook. X (Twitter) and places like Quora are harder to root out. But the moment they tell me how beautiful I am, offer to lend me one of their many cars, or say they want to be my "friend," I know for sure they're a scammer. I've catalogued some of my experiences on my YouTube channel in shorts, https://youtube.com/shorts/FO8pb3-bpY0?si=fRC0cRAr3PYm9KRu and https://youtube.com/shorts/BXBmEtAKU1U?si=69LkdMp79FmZeowk.
Bernie McInally narrates his blog written for Dementia Researcher. In this updated blog, Bernie McInally examines the heightened dementia risk among LGBTQ+ individuals, driven by factors like minority stress, social isolation, and health inequalities. Drawing on the latest ENRICH Scotland care home survey, he reveals the lack of structured LGBTQ+ support and calls for targeted action—through training, dedicated roles, inclusive research practices, and stronger community engagement. Bernie argues this isn't just a gap in research, it's a call for systemic change in care environments. Gerascophobia is the fear of aging or getting older. This fear, according to today's podcast guest, Kelly Tremblay, PhD, can not only make us sick, but can also be combatted by engaging in wellness activities such as book clubs or walking clubs—or even by listening to an inspiring podcast. What's more, doing the work to counter the fear can actually help change the trajectory of our health as we get older. Tremblay, who is an audiologist and neuroscientist, and who co-authored the World Health Organization's (WHO) new guidelines on integrated care for older people, examines the impact of neuroscience on longevity how it has shaped her life and work. As Trembly sits down with Susan Ryan to talk about her research in neuroplasticity, hearing loss, and communication disorders, they discuss her work as a professional coach, healthy workplaces, and how her personal life has coincided with her work. More about Dr. Tremblay's work on WHO's guidelines on integrated care for older people: https://canadianaudiologist.ca/world-health-organizations-guidelines-on-integrated-care-for-older-people-icope/

Earlier this week, senior's advocate Susan Walsh delivered her first report on how well older people in this province are living. It turns out for many of them, their income adds up to less than a full-time job on minimum wage. And more than fifty percent of seniors have only government checks as income. Walsh says there's a lot of work to be done to ensure our seniors live as well as they can.
If today was the last day of your life, do you think you'd have any regrets or before you died? No matter how wise, successful or accomplished you might be, chances are, you probably answered yes. Why? Well, because it's an inevitable part of life to fail and fall short at times. Fortunately for us, however, we don't always have to make the mistake to learn the lesson. We can always turn to the older and wiser generations who have come before us and reflect on what their personal experiences have taught them. With that said, here are the a few of the most common regrets people tend to have as they look back on their lives. Improving technology-enabled home care for older people to help Ireland reduce the annual €500 million impact on the economy from people falling - especially those over 65 - is one of the goals of a new interdisciplinary research programme at Lero, the University of Limerick-based Research Centre for Software. A two-year €140,000 research programme focussing on technology-enabled care (TEC) in home environments is being part-funded by Shannon-headquartered Ei Electronics, one of Ireland's leading indigenous electronics manufacturing and exporting companies, employing 1,250 worldwide. Lero researcher Associate Professor Katie Crowley said that while technology-enabled care (TEC) in home environments currently has support items such as motion sensors and panic buttons, the innovative development and use of technology can help people function safely and remain at home longer. Dr Crowley, who is also attached to The Ageing Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Limerick (UL), added: "One example of this is in relation to falls. The National Health Service in the UK report that approximately 1 in 3 adults over 65 years and half of people over 80 will have at least one fall a year. "In Ireland, the economic impact of falls is €500 million annually, according to data from the Health Service Executive. For the elderly, having a fear of falling significantly increases the chance of having a fall, and emerging evidence suggests that having monitoring technology reduces this fear, leading to improved mobility for the older person," added Dr Crowley, who lectures in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at UL. Lero lead researcher Prof. Ita Richardson believes a growing need exists to modify and integrate occupational home practice with innovative technology and software, changing homecare significantly for older people who often have cognitive, physical, caregiving and healthcare needs. "Initially, we need to understand how older people's lives and the lives of their formal and informal carers could change through TEC," said Prof. Richardson, who also shares her expertise with ARC. The Lero team also includes Dr Ann-Marie Morrissey, who brings occupational therapy expertise to the project. Ei Electronics head of research and development Mike Keegan said they are delighted to work with Lero, whose work in connected health, driverless vehicles, smart communities, and other areas is world-leading. "At Ei Electronics, we are all about deploying dependable technologies to improve people's living environment today and into the future. Where lives are at risk, especially among older adults living independently, nothing can be left to chance, and we hope this programme can make life less stressful for those living by themselves and those supporting that independence," he added.
An age-and-climate-friendly village in Kildare and a Halloween safety initiative by An Garda Síochána in Kerry were among the winners of the 2024 National Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards. Announced at the 8th annual awards on 7th November, the winning campaigns were chosen for their exceptional contribution to making Ireland an outstanding place to grow older. The ability to access clear and concise information impacts an older person's life, from health and well-being to social connectedness to financial security. A working group comprising HSE, other statutory agencies, and community and voluntary partners developed the directory to link existing cross-sectoral community-based assets. Local consultation with older people informed the planning and this found loneliness to be a real problem in rural areas. The directory signposts opportunities for support, resources and ways to form better social connections. Age Friendly Housing, Brady's Court, South Dublin County Council. The development at Brady's Court represents an exemplifier infill development in an established suburban community - ideally suited and attractive to older residents who would like to right-size. This project is just one example of an ongoing programme of 10 sites currently being developed by South Dublin County Council and is supported by Development Plan policies and objectives which actively encourage age-friendly provision.
