Dr Michael Friedman joins us from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, which is also where Sarah lives now so we are neighbours! Cool. Michael tells us about the pros and cons of practicing as a chiropractor and his stand up comedy, which has been something that he always wanted to do. He finally took the plunge in 2013 and he hasn't looked back. Micheal is a regular around the Ottawa comedy scene and he has also travelled around Canada with his comedy. We get into the very controversial topic of dishwasher loading and Sarah flexes her nerd muscles hard and out-nerds Michael with her utensile loading system! Michael also tells us about a patient who did not think a chiropractor should be a stand up comedian because it is not professional and this led Sarah to think that this woman might be dead inside. In this episode, our guest Michael Friedman from SupaFitGrow talks about...copywriting! Copywriting is becoming increasingly important in digital marketing. In the past, optimizing ads was the key to success, but now creativity and good copywriting are crucial. Many businesses struggle with copywriting because they don't understand their target audience or how to create an emotional connection. Researching your ideal avatar and understanding their pains, challenges, and goals is essential for effective copywriting. It's also important to differentiate your brand from competitors and have a unique selling proposition (USP). Copywriting should include storytelling and highlight the benefits of your product or service. Testing and learning from data is an ongoing process in copywriting. Chef Michael Friedman grew up in a New York area Jewish American household (in Westfield, NJ, to be specific) and, like me, was nourished by lots of Chinese and Italian food. Also like me, he attended Boston University's School of Communications, so we share a kindred spirit connectivity. After paying his dues in fine dining restaurants around the world (including stints with Rich Melman's Lettuce Entertain You restaurant group, as well as with Chef Marc Vetri in Philadelphia, and also with Chef Jose Andres), Mike started his own restaurant group in the Washington DC area and, for the past ten years, has garnered awards and recognition of his own. All-Purpose (A-P) Pizza Shop, in its three locations, pays tribute to the east coast pizzas and slice shops of his youth, and joins Red Hen and Aventino Roman Cucina as part of his ever-growing restaurant empire. Hear all about Chef Mike's quest to bring the past into the present, and the culinary vision that drives him forward in this new episode of Pizza Quest with Peter Reinhart.Click here for the video versions of Pizza Quest. If you count on HRN content, become a monthly sustaining donor at heritageradionetwork.org/donate.Pizza Quest is Powered by Simplecast.

Last week in Phoenix, I invited attendees from various facets of the franchising community to share the impact IFA has had on their careers. Collectively, I am calling this the Many Voices of IFA and presenting it as this week's episode of Franchise Today.  Seasoned industry professionals like Frank Fiume, Nick Friedman, Rocco Fiorentino, and others spoke to the value of the relationships, mentorship, community, and access that IFA facilitates within the industry. Key figures such as Omar Soliman, John Francis, Terry Braun, Dave McDougall, Scott Perry, and Ron Bender emphasized the organization's role in providing educational resources, protecting the franchise model, and supporting “smart growth,” including the encouragement of veteran participation through the IFA's Vet Fran program. The significance of the IFA was further underscored by contributions from Ralph Yarusso, who expressed his passion for giving back after 20 years of involvement, and Josh Wall, who noted the importance of learning from industry leaders' mistakes. Mike Kelly valued the networking opportunities and client connections made possible by the IFA, while newcomer Michael Friedman, son of yours truly, brings his decade of software sales experience with him, into the FRM business. Enthusiasm for the IFA was also echoed by Ron Feldman, Aslam Khan, David Kurkjian and Marty Welch, who collectively praised the association for its role in fostering knowledge exchange, support, and insight-sharing among franchising professionals. The IFA was celebrated as a platform that not only enables connections with seasoned experts but also welcomes voices from emerging franchise businesses.

Every year, thousands of tourists touch down at New Orleans' Louis Armstrong airport expecting to partake in an unforgettable culinary experience. With no shortage of places to drink and dine, the first question visitors often ask is: "Where do locals go?" On this week's show, we explore neighborhood spots that have a strong local following in the Crescent City. We begin with Morning Call, a coffee and beignet shop with over 150 years of local history. Co-owner Bob Hennessey talks with us about the beloved café that opens early and closes late on the edge of Mid-City. Then, we visit local institution Juan's Flying Burrito. A quarter century ago, founder Warren Chapoton saw a lot of fine-dining restaurants and funky dives in New Orleans, but nothing in between. He and co-owner Jay Morris explain how their "punk rock burrito shop" got off the ground and expanded across the city. We also make our way over to popular Bywater restaurant Pizza Delicious – a place regulars call Pizza D. Co-owner Michael Friedman talks with us about the hot spot, which he opened in 2015 with Greg Augarten. Finally, we join Geoffrey Meeker, owner of French Truck Coffee. It took only one cup of coffee from San Francisco to inspire him to become a New Orleans coffee purveyor. Now, Geoffrey and his team are at the vanguard of what is often characterized as the "third wave" coffee movement. For more of all things Louisiana Eats, be sure to visit us at PoppyTooker.com.

EPISODE 84: Raised in North Dakota's cattle country, Neal Barnard grew up studying piano and cello. Barnard started composing and recording songs in the 80s. With a penchant for the avant-garde, Neal constantly writes songs that defy any genre categorization. He chooses unconventional time meters as well, in order to “tilt the song ever so slightly and give you that little jolt between the ears,” as he puts it. Barnard launched CarbonWorks at a 2016 event at New York's Metrograph, hosted by Alec Baldwin and Maggie Q. Its line-up included singers from Italy, France, and the U.S., with rock and classical instrumentalists. While this is Barnard's fourth album, following Pop Maru, Verdun, and CarbonWorks' 2016 release, he is better known as a medical pioneer who formed the Physicians Committee in 1985 to rally for prevention, nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. In 2006, funded by the National Institutes of Health, Barnard used a low-fat vegan diet to revolutionize the treatment of type 2 diabetes and has used similar approaches to skewer weight problems, women's health issues, and other medical challenges. “In music or medicine, we have to look out of the box,” he says. A new poll this week from AP-NORC found that when asked, close to half of Americans say they are very concerned that Russia would directly target the U.S. with nuclear weapons, and an additional 3 in 10 are somewhat concerned. Given that Vladimir Putin put his nuclear forces on high alert at the start of his invasion of Ukraine, and with the rhetoric heating up as the war continues, it's hardly surprising that people are worried.  All the talk of nukes got us thinking about a segment from a few years back in which Brooke spoke to playwright Anne Washburn, about her work Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play. In it she imagines a world that has been devastated by a nuclear incident and how the remaining civilization would process the destruction over time...by retelling an episode of The Simpsons and about what the episode's evolution over the decades says about society's need for stories and about the role of comedy in the face of tragedy. Excerpts taken from the 2013 production at Playwrights Horizons, directed by Steve Cosson, and a 2017 production at Amherst Regional High School, directed by Nathan Baron-Silvern.
