Get ready to be inspired like you never have before. Our featured guest on today's podcast is Jennifer Slavin. Not only is Jennifer Vice President of Operations at Magic Memories Early Learning Schools in Pennsylvania, she is also a coach with the Child Care Success Company. Brian and Jennifer got to know each other very well when he was coaching at the CCSC. They hit it off and have been good friends ever since. Jennifer is the most positive person we know, she is always smiling, always bringing that happy energy, and always lighting the candles of other people, including ours. Mindset is the most important thing you will learn in business or in the child care industry. Once you have the mindset right the skillset will follow. Many times owners and directors get discouraged by the mindset or attitude of their teachers and caregivers, but they don't realize that their team's mindset is actually a reflection of their own. Happiness is contagious. This is a principle that Jen knows well. She makes it a habit to purposefully go into the centers she oversees with high energy and positivity so her “sunshine” will rub off on her team and brighten their mindsets. Jen says, “It's our responsibility as leaders to bring that positive energy to our team.” Her philosophy is that keeping a positive mindset is a discipline. You have to work at it, plan for it, and continually practice to reinforce your mindset by feeding it positivity so you are able to be the leader that your team needs. Jen coaches over 40 directors, and the two most common themes that they report struggling with right now are staffing, and getting pulled down by the day-to-day. Jen shares several of her “go-to,” tried and true techniques that she uses to help directors refocus and put their happy pants back on. She prides herself on feeding into her school leaders so they are ready to be the models, the examples, and the ones that set the tone and truly LEAD their teams. Jen also discusses how to not let things out of your control impact your mindset, how to shift the energy to get the performance that you want out of your team, and how to pull yourself out of a funk when you are so discouraged that all you want to do is cry. She answers this week's listener's question with several questions that provoke self-reflection. Don't miss this episode! Today I welcome Michael Matricciani back to Off the Pitch with Active for a 2nd time. This episode was recorded back Jan 2018 when he was the owner of Soccajoeys, a non-competitive football program for 2.5-8-year old’s. We are now in May ’18 and he recently sold it after 5 years as the Owner/Director so he could focus more on his coaching and his promotion as Australian College of Sport Football-Coaching Director. It is an absolute pleasure for me to announce that Michael Matricciani has also put his hand up for involvement in the Yellow for Yelling Awareness and Educational program for parents with children in sport. His experience is comprehensive; Ex professional player (including U20 young Socceroos & U23 Olyroos), 3 years as Technical Director of CCSC, 5 years as Director/Owner of Soccajoeys and current ACS Football-Director of Coaching. He is also FFSA U17 (NTC) Girls Head Coach, developing players for future Matilda’s (for non-Australian listeners Matilda’s is the Australia Women’s National Football Team, who currently is ranked 6 in the world by FIFA. Combine this experience with his coaching qualification including AFC/FFA A License plus FFA instructor and other certified courses, Michael will help raise awareness of the Yellow for Yelling program amongst higher level coaches and educators. I got so excited when he offered to get involved so I began searching for this coming interview. It was recorded back in Jan ’18, when we had a chat about Soccajoeys and setting up the foundation for a successful life by providing a safe learning environment in sport. It is a great podcast and it will touch your heart if you are coaching kids or are a parent with a younger child. This Episode is brought to you by DPRMT, Diego Pellegrini Remedial Massage Therapist. "Everything good in my life is because of camp." Daniella Garran Daniella Garran calls herself a camp "cultist" because she loves camp that much. Daniella has been at Cape Code Sea Camps since 1984 as both a camper and a counselor, and she now serves as an assistant director. In her role at CCSC now, Daniella schedules over 400 campers and oversees the teen leadership program. Daniella loves summer camp so much, she even wrote a book called Hello Mother, Hello Father: Celebrating Summer Camp! The book is a beautiful, hard cover, coffee-table style book that covers the history of summer camps in the United States. For the book, she interviewed campers, staff, and alumni from many different American summer camps. I first connected with Daniella when she was writing the book, and she ended up interviewing alumni from my camp, who are quoted in the book. In Episode 10, I interview Daniella about her experiences at camp, what she learned as a camp counselor, and how she is able to use those skills as a 7th grade teacher. We also talk about why she recommends camp counseling as a great summer job and what she wants to tell parents who think an internship is a better idea than being a camp counselor!
