Mark talks about an interview Pavel Datsyuk, the Russian NHL player called the “Magic Man” 25:08 A key factor in the research at AIK, is looking how they create motivational climates when it is the children’s inner motivational factors as a key for participation, performance and personal development over time. 31:55 AIK’s 3 principles 1. Wellbeing of children 2. Following United Nations & rights for children and Gov documents about children in sport & 3. Having more players, play U16, U17, U19 and into their senior team. They also have a clear pedagogical model and principals within the club. 41:12 SDT and how it relates to development 45:40 Programs are becoming based on economic models rather than learning models, which shifts the focus more towards the economics 52:50 Fascinating that coaches from different sports from all around the world say NO to the following question “If we restart youth sports from zero and rebuild it based on children’s physical and emotional needs, would it look like it does today?” 59:55 Afordances landscape of training: isolated individual skills on one end and free play on the other. The optimum opportunity of interactions of which the training is design is likely somewhere in between. The question to ask ourselves as coaches; Does the design invite, permit or inhibit young players to interact and learn?

Now living in Italy, I caught up with Christian while on holiday in Australia. We had a chat about the difference between Australia and Italy from a football perspective. We covered many aspects of his lifestyle in a compound with 20 other players, training styles and the mental challenges living in this environment. How is it to compete with 7 other players for a position in the team and only find out if you play the day before? Christian talk about how he deals with this and how some of the team-mates relationships got affected. If you love football, you will enjoy this interview.

With nearly 30 years of experience as an educator/coach and two master’s degrees (one in sport psychology and one in Early Childhood Education), Coach Reed has a wealth of practical experience and scientific research that he draws on to help athletes, coaches, and parents find more effective ways to navigate the youth sport environment. Since the release of his 2015 TEDx talk “Echoes Beyond the Game”, he has become a trusted educator, advisor, and speaker to sports organizations all over the globe. I personally love when he is being geeky and break down the science and translate it into practical example of behaviors.
Today I welcome Michael Matricciani back to Off the Pitch with Active for a 2nd time. This episode was recorded back Jan 2018 when he was the owner of Soccajoeys, a non-competitive football program for 2.5-8-year old’s. We are now in May ’18 and he recently sold it after 5 years as the Owner/Director so he could focus more on his coaching and his promotion as Australian College of Sport Football-Coaching Director. It is an absolute pleasure for me to announce that Michael Matricciani has also put his hand up for involvement in the Yellow for Yelling Awareness and Educational program for parents with children in sport. His experience is comprehensive; Ex professional player (including U20 young Socceroos & U23 Olyroos), 3 years as Technical Director of CCSC, 5 years as Director/Owner of Soccajoeys and current ACS Football-Director of Coaching. He is also FFSA U17 (NTC) Girls Head Coach, developing players for future Matilda’s (for non-Australian listeners Matilda’s is the Australia Women’s National Football Team, who currently is ranked 6 in the world by FIFA. Combine this experience with his coaching qualification including AFC/FFA A License plus FFA instructor and other certified courses, Michael will help raise awareness of the Yellow for Yelling program amongst higher level coaches and educators. I got so excited when he offered to get involved so I began searching for this coming interview. It was recorded back in Jan ’18, when we had a chat about Soccajoeys and setting up the foundation for a successful life by providing a safe learning environment in sport. It is a great podcast and it will touch your heart if you are coaching kids or are a parent with a younger child. This Episode is brought to you by DPRMT, Diego Pellegrini Remedial Massage Therapist.
