Doctor What? Doctor Where? Stories of Rural Medicine in Victoria
What makes a medical student or intern want to become a rural generalist? And what does that journey look like?A rural generalist is a doctor who provides healthcare to regional, rural or remote communities. They are trained in primary care, emergency medicine and an advanced skill to meet the health needs of their rural community. This is in one of a number of disciplines, with the most common being obstetrics, palliative care, emergency medicine or anaesthetics. Rural generalists are a vital piece of Australia's healthcare system, bridging healthcare gaps in areas where there aren't those other medical specialists. In this episode, we ask three doctors who are early on in their rural generalist career, what their role is like, from the good days to the more challenging ones:Dr Casey O'Connor - PGY6 doctor at Latrobe Regional Hospital, working in palliative care. She is part of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners training program.Dr Rachel Sultana - PGY2 doctor at the West Gippsland Health Group in the paediatric ward. She is on the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine training pathway.Dr Will Hardy - PGY2 doctor at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service. He is on the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine training pathway. For more information about the study and training opportunities across regional Victoria, head to the Monash Rural Health website. The North West Victoria and Gippsland Regional Training Hubs have commissioned this podcast to help medical students and junior doctors learn more about training and practising medicine in regional Australia. In today's episode, Genevieve shares her first pregnancy and birth and details her postpartum joys and challenges. She embraced her ‘goddess energy' in her second trimester but by the third trimester, she really felt the physical limitations of carrying a big baby and only being quite small herself. Her waters broke at home and once she arrived at hospital she was hooked up to syntocinon which is when her contractions intensified so significantly that she requested an epidural. It was only once she'd been discharged and was reading her notes that she discovered she'd had an episiotomy and a postpartum haemorrhage and she talks about how this made her feel. ___________ If you're pregnant, we encourage you to start thinking about your birth recovery now. You need more support in the fourth trimester (the 12 weeks after birth) than you do in pregnancy which can be surprising to many new mothers. We thought Dr Kyla's response and The Embrace Hub response on The Project were both great ***trigger warning for stigmatising images in the edit*** The Mexican Corn Salad recipe Meg mentioned can be found here, it's delicious.

Pain is the body's way of telling us there is an imbalance in the body. Sound therapy and meditation is being studied as alternative options to relieving pain. When combined, these modalities can have magical effects. One theory why is that sound works through the vibrational tactile effects on the whole body. Sound could stimulate touch fibres that affect pain perception. According to the Australian College of Sound Therapy, sound healing instruments generate sound waves. Each molecule in the body absorbs a small amount of energy from these waves and then passes the wave on to the next molecule. When molecules are hit by sound waves close to their inherent frequency they will oscillate or strongly 'resonate'. The oscillation, or resonance, of molecules, triggered by the sound vibrations cause alternating compression and relaxation of cells. It is like a form of massage at a cellular level deep within the tissue. When the cell is compressed it loses some of its fluid, along with waste products and toxins. As the pressure relaxes, fresh nutrients are drawn into the cell and hormones within the tissue are also stimulated by this oscillation effect that will improve blood flow to the area for many hours. In this way, regeneration and repair mechanisms are stimulated. So sink back and relax into this meditation, allowing your pain to be released on the sound waves as they flow throughout your body. Namaste. ------------------ For even more sound healing magic, follow me on: @trusoundhealing Insight Timer (find more sound baths here) YouTube (longer meditations, sound baths and instructional videos here) If you're interested in participating in a sound healing class, or would like to organise an exclusive, tailored private group event (either in person or via Zoom / MS Teams), please reach out to me by sending me a DM

In today's episode, Sarah takes us through her fertility experience as an adoptee which prompted her to do a series of tests early in her journey. After a missed miscarriage, she embarked on ovulation induction but then spontaneously conceived while on an overseas holiday. She opted for private obstetric care alongside support from a doula and at 37 weeks, when baby Teddy remained in a footling breech position, she booked a planned caesarean. But, Teddy had other plans and Sarah's waters broke in dramatic fashion while standing outside the hospital. His surprise early arrival allowed them to stay in an uninterrupted bubble for five days and Sarah takes us right through her initial postpartum including her caesarean recovery and breastfeeding. A joyful episode brimming with considered advice and unbridled truths, I think you'll really enjoy this one. ------- If you're pregnant, we encourage you to start thinking about your birth recovery now. In today's episode Lisa takes us through her two very different labours - her first was posterior and 67 hours long, her second was anterior and very quick. As a women's health physiotherapist, Lisa knew the positive outcomes associated with MGP so she advocated to get in that programme and whilst her labour was long, it was also very supported. She also talks at length about caring for her swollen and sore perineum after birth and the shock of just how weak her pelvic floor muscles were. Seven months later she was pregnant again (her period hadn't even returned) and she got straight into the MGP programme again. With her midwife's guidance she embraced all the techniques, movements and positions to ensure her baby wasn't posterior and experienced a swift yet intense second birth. Professor Ian Brighthope has had a lifelong interest in nature and medicine. He graduated in Agricultural Science in 1965 and then from Medical School in 1974. As early as the 1970's Ian became disillusioned with Western Medicine and medical training. He specialised in nutritional medicine, environmental medicine, intravenous therapies including chelation therapy and herbal medicine. As chairman of the Australian College of Herbal Medicine, he developed an early interest in cannabis and other controversial herbs. In August, 2022, frustrated with the damage being done by the mainstream medical authorities and politicians of all colours, he formed The WOW, The World Of Wellness International Limited. Professor Brighthope has continued to campaign for the best of health care. In this conversation we talk about his career and the challenges he faced as questioned medical orthodoxy. We also talk about what it means to be an integrative medical doctor, discuss the COVID measures and how they impacted on medical ethics and freedom.
