Recent changes in government funding for international aid, coupled with public criticism of some faith-based organizations, have raised important questions. What responsibility does the government have in saving lives, especially those of non-citizens? Is it acceptable for Christian groups to receive government funding to further the public good?Michael Cerna, CEO of Accord Network, joins Today's Conversation podcast, hosted by NAE President Walter Kim, to delve into these issues and more. In this episode, they also discuss:How the foreign aid freeze impacts Christian nonprofits that do not receive federal funding; What responsibilities governments have in caring for vulnerable people and enacting justice;Examples of faith and government collaboration in the Bible; andHow Jesus' perseverance in the face of adversity inspires hope.Show Notes: https://www.nae.org/michael-cerna-faith-and-hope-amidst-crisis/

After the U.S. elected Barack Obama its first Black president in 2008, some assumed that this signaled a post-racial America. However, subsequent and serious incidents suggested this was not the case, inciting what some came to know as a second civil rights movement. Political correspondent, journalist, and historian Juan Williams explores this phenomenon in his latest release New Prize for These Eyes: The Rise of America's Second Civil Rights Movement. Who are the heroes of this movement? Where is it headed? What distinguishes it from its predecessor? Williams aims to answer these questions, exploring demographic changes, the rise and role of social media, and other critical shifts in the economic and cultural landscape. The author traces the arc of this new civil rights era, touching on subjects like the Obama presidency, Charlottesville, January 6th, and a Confederate flag in the Capitol. Exploring both past and present, New Prize for These Eyes will be of interest to historians or anyone concerned about America's future. It encourages citizens to learn about the progress the nation has made, as well as obstacles that have yet to be overcome. Juan Williams is is a prizewinning journalist and historian. He is the author of the bestselling civil rights history Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years 1954–1965, which accompanied the PBS series of the same name. He also wrote the landmark biography of the first African American on the Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary, as well as the New York Times bestsellers Enough and Muzzled: The Assault on Honest Debate. Williams worked for The Washington Post as a celebrated national political correspondent, White House correspondent, and editorial writer. His NPR talk show took ratings to a new high. He has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and Ebony. He is currently senior political analyst for Fox News Channel and a columnist for The Hill. Enrique Cerna calls himself a recovering broadcast journalist. He worked in Seattle media for more than four decades. Cerna was a reporter, producer and host for KOMO Radio and Television, KING Television and KCTS Public Television. In February 2018, he retired from his role as senior correspondent with KCTS. Still, he remains active as the co-host of the Chino Y Chicano and UNFILTERED podcasts. Cerna has earned ten Northwest Regional Emmy awards. In May 2022, Washington State University's Edward R. Murrow College of Communication inducted him into its Hall of Achievement. Since March 2020, he has been a member of the WSU Board of Regents. He also serves as vice president for the Seattle Chapter of the National Hispanic Journalist's Association. WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Rep. Lou Correa of California says the elephant in the room that no one talks about is the United States' attitude towards Mexico and Mexico's attitude to the U.S.Correa was a panelist at the Mexico Institute's 10th Annual Building a Competitive U.S.-Mexico Border Conference, held recently in Washington, D.C.The panel was titled “The Border from the Congressional Perspective.” It featured three members of Congress from the border: U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona, and Correa. The panel moderator was IBC Bank's president for Eagle Pass, Hector J. Cerna.Cerna asked Correa to talk about a bill he had introduced about infrastructure at land ports of entry.Correa responded: “I think there's a bigger issue here and I think it's the elephant in the room that we don't talk about, which is the attitude that we have towards Mexico and Mexico as towards the US. We're all interdependent.”Correa pointed out that his grandfather came to the U.S. from Mexico around 1900 to work on the railroads.“When you grow up you think you're the only odd duck with these characteristics. Then you find out everybody in the room (is the same). Orange County, California Republican Orange County… three quarters of the population (is Mexicano). We forget the historical connection.”Correa asked, where does the border start and where does it end.“Those relationships, those economic relationships, are deep and interdependency is the lifeblood of Mexico's economy. And now the US,” Correa said.“We're going to build a border wall. It has been built since the days of Clinton. It's a bad thing because it sends the wrong message, which is us versus them. But it's going to be built.”Correa said Mexicanos, Latin Americans, Central Americans, don't want to be Americans. But they want the American Dream."We talk about the Chinese, the Russians. We can compete with them one-on-one. But it's up to us to figure out that roadmap. Work out a free trade agreement with China. Are you kidding me? Have we been asleep at the wheel in the United States? Then, only complain about what is going on in our own backyard,” Correa said.“It's our attitude. We're more focused on Europe, Asia, until we see a fire in our backyard. Then that's when we want to figure out, why did it start?”Correa said the first thing to do is take care of business. He said the first order of business is understanding the importance of the relationship with Mexico and the rest of the Americas.“USMCA is going to provide a tremendous opportunity to kick the tires, to see what's been working and what has not been working and to modify it and to begin to have that as a blueprint for the rest of the Americas in terms of trade,” Correa said.“I've been talking to other countries south of the border. They want in. They want to work with us, as they should. And, ultimately, I've talked about what we need to do as a nation. We want to be leaders. Let's be leaders. We should have a Marshall Plan to restart the economy south of the border.”Border Security? It is very important, Correa said. “But how you address it, the fundamentals is even more important and we are not talking about it. And I'm going to tell you, we are the reflection of our constituents. You have to help us plow the field, change the narrative. The narrative should be the bigger picture. Where are we going to be 10, 15, 20, 30 years? We can do better than we've done. This is not the US his fault. This is not Mexico's fault. It's all our fault.” To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Episode 225 - Wendy Jo Cerna - Stories Have Always Captivated My HeartHost of the So God Told You To Write a Book - Now What PodcastFrom the bedtime stories my dad read to me and my brothers, to the required reading of various literature classes, to the novels consumed in the quiet of the night, stories have always captivated my heart.Growing up in Minnesota as the daughter of educators, at times I found myself in the back seat of a station wagon travelling on family vacations during a break in the school-year calendar. My two older brothers were the perfect companions on these journeys. The eldest had an uncanny ability to map out our routes to ensure that we investigated and enjoyed as many aspects of our outings as was humanly possible. And the middle brother was my built-in entertainment. He and I engrossed ourselves in developing talk-shows and other narratives that required quirky characters, funny voices and distinct accents. But it was not until January of 2015, when a divine prompting dropped from the blue into my heart, that I even entertained the notion of writing a novel. Frankly, I didn't know if I could. But with my children all grown and my husband's business requiring less and less of my attention, space had finally opened up for me to do what I had in my heart to do. So, I chose to give myself to learning the process of moving a story up out of my heart and onto the pages of a book. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the quirky characters, interesting settings, and imaginative realms that once intrigued me as a young person should now bubble up in my books. It reminds me that our Heavenly Creator is very intentional about our earthly journey. As I write, I sometimes feel as if I am still travelling in the back seat of a station wagon with my Jesus at the wheel and my characters as my companions filling my heart with their stories as we traverse both life on the planet and that which is to come. Can't wait to see what's up around the bend.https://www.wendyjocerna.com/MindShift Power Podcast is for teens, about teens, and anyone who works with teens. As I listened to Wendy Jo Cerna talk about her books, I kept getting the feel of supernatural time-slip stories unlike anything I've ever read before. I'll be honest. When she first started describing them, I wasn't certain they were the books for me. But... by the time we got done chatting about each one, I'd already added it to my TBR. Wendy has a unique perspective in her fiction, coming at ideas from a sideways perspective that intrigues me. Listen in to see why! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How Rewarding Would It Be to Go Back to the Past? Author of The Baby Catcher Gate, The Agreements, and Solbakken, Wendy Jo Cerna chatted with me about how she began writing. As a recent empty nester, she describes praying about it and the Lord asking her what she wanted to do. I don't know about you, but that kind of throws me. I always picture the Lord as having a plan for what HE wants me to do. I never consider that He might want me to acknowledge my desires. And this from the God of whom David wrote in Psalm 37:4, "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." Duh. From a book about a baby-catcher gate in heaven to one about agreements people sign before being born on earth, to a woman in Minnesota who visits her family's farm... and then their lives... well... she's got quite a diverse and intriguing booklist. Not only that, but Wendy Jo Cerna is also passionate about encouraging authors who feel like the Lord wants them to write a book. To that end, she has a podcast chronicling what she'd learned along the way. Solbakken by Wendy Jo Cerna A house. A mess. A mystery. “Hey, Tor.” My cousin's tone is serious. His words clipped. “What's going on? Everyone okay?” I ask. “Yes, we're fine but… well, I was just driving by your Uncle Einar's place… I hate to tell you this, Tora, but somebody broke in. The sheriff is coming out in the morning. It's quite a mess in there. Looks like every drawer and cupboard was emptied out.” Uncle Einar's home stands empty much of the year, and is the original family homestead my grandparents built in Solbakken, Minnesota, in the early 1900's after immigrating from Norway. Amongst the scattered papers and photographs, intriguing questions lay unanswered in the Anderson family lineage, hidden for decades. When a stash of ancient coins is found, and a gifted stranger moves in next door, windows are opened to incredible possibilities that transcend imagination and transport Tora throughout her family generations. This week I sit down with Author, Breathwork Facilitator, Reiki Master, Energy Healer, and Coach Maz Dela Cerna. Maz opens up about a tumultuous time in her early life that left her homeless, in addiction, and battling depression and abuse trauma. Maz shares how she used these painful experiences to call back her own power and how she was able to create a different life for herself through manifesting, long term healing, and integration. Maz tells the audience that manifesting is more than acquiring material things, it's about listening to our souls' highest calling and desire is, and trusting that we have internally everything we need to build the kind of life that sets us free.
