In 2012, a baby girl was born without a right or left hemisphere of her brain. Doctors said she was essentially in a vegetative state, unable to see or hear. Relinquished by her birth parents, this two-week-old unnamed baby girl found her way to Cori Salchert's home. Despite the infant's grim medical diagnosis, Cori took the baby and named her Emmalynn. Ever since that moment, Cori has been on a quest to help other hospice babies, those left to live and die without family to care for them. Bringing these fragile babies into her home, Cori and her family have promised not only to hold them briefly, until their last breath, but to love them forever and always. Cori Salchert, fosters and adopts “hospice babies” whose own families find it too hard to cope with their child’s terminal diagnosis. She is the mother of over fifteen children, some of whom died in her care. Cori traveled a very painful pathway before she arrived at her calling to caring for and loving terminally ill children so that they will not die alone. Cori shares her journey into this calling in her book, I Will Love You Forever, A True Story about Finding Life, Hope & Healing While Caring for Hospice Babies. She calls her home a “house of hope” where she and her family dedicate their lives to providing dying children with loving hospice care until the end of their lives. In this moving conversation, Cori shares with Sharon Betters how God used her years of undiagnosed pain and illness to help equip her to recognize the value of every human being, no matter how “unproductive” others might view them. Her first hospice baby was Emmalynn, a baby born missing part of her brain. Instead of dying in a hospital, during her last days of life, Emmalyn was surrounded and snuggled by people who loved her. Cori says, “Emmalyn didn’t suffer, she wasn’t in pain, and most certainly wasn’t alone…What a gift it is to be a part of these babies’ lives, to cherish and love them even though they aren’t able to give anything back. No matter your season of life or daily responsibilities, Cori’s story will inspire and encourage you to recognize you, too, have the privilege of offering help and hope through your everyday life.
Cori Salchert is a hospice mom. What's that? Basically, she says she’s ready and willing to receive babies into her home with her family who have a life-limiting prognosis or terminal diagnosis. Her job? Is to love them just like a mama for whatever time they have before they pass away. She has 8 biological children and have fostered or adopted 7 more children. Cori says she and her family aren’t professionals; they’re just here, telling their story so others are aware of the needs of these babies, and how much other people could change things, too, by being brave and being willing to come alongside a child who needs love and care for a brief season. Cori Salchert shares her heart behind fostering terminally ill babies and children. It is not light warfare and it is not all song and dance. Having a terminally ill child is not a walk in the park and I don't want to minimize the grief that goes along with that. Courage is not the absence of fear, it is just determining that there is something greater at stake. I want it to be so evident that I am doing all of this in God's power. I do not want to stand at the burning bush and say, "I stutter ..." I want God to use me. You can't take this as all pain and you can't just take it as a gift; it's both. A baby girl was born without a right or left hemisphere of her brain. Doctors said she was essentially in a vegetative state, unable to see or hear. They said there was no hope for her. Relinquished to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin by her birth parents under the state’s Safe Haven Law, this two-week-old unnamed baby girl found her way to Cori and Mark Salchert’s home. Despite the infant’s grim medical diagnosis, when Cori met her, she instantly realized that she could not allow this baby girl to spend her few days on earth alone and unloved. Cori, who had recently suffered a personal health crisis and the loss of her dream job, realized that God was making room in her home and her heart for this precious child. Cori brought the baby girl home and named her Emmalynn. All too often in our society, hospice babies like Emmalynn are left alone by families who find it too difficult to deal with their child’s condition. As a registered nurse and former perinatal bereavement specialist, Cori understands the unique challenges of end-of-life issues for some of the most vulnerable among us: hospice babies with medically life-limiting or terminal diagnoses. Under Cori and Mark’s care, Emmalynn surprised everyone by living for 50 days, days filled with light, laughter, field trips, and unconditional love. She passed away peacefully on September 27, 2012, while being held in Cori’s arms, nuzzled against her chest. Rather than letting these babies pass away in hospitals, which are often sterile, noisy, and devoid of a loving touch, Cori brings them home to feel the warmth of a family environment. She attends to the usual infant needs — daily feedings and diaper changes — in addition to the unique challenges of caring for fragile babies who can pass away without warning. Listening to her share her touching story of loving the unloved until they pass away. It takes a special person to live up to this calling - and you'll hear it's not always easy for her either. Cori Salchert is truly courageous.
After a harrowing season with health issues and a resulting job loss, Cori Salchert shares how she began caring for babies surrendered under the Safe Haven.
Wanted to share this precious episode again featuring the amazing Cori Salchert, who adopts and cares for babies on hospice. She's an angel and this conversation will warm your heart!
Hundreds of thousands of children across this country are in the foster care system. Whether these children have been removed from abusive homes or lost their only family to tragedy, or any of the other reasons they find themselves dependent upon the state for care, all of these children deserve to find someone to love, care for, and cherish them. The luckiest of these children do, but too many others do not. This can be especially true for children with debilitating or life-limiting, terminal diseases. Fortunately for some of these children, people like Cori and Mark Salchert are stepping in. On this episode of American Snippets, we introduce you to a family who is dedicated to caring for children with a serious and sometimes terminal diagnosis. How they and their own children wrap their arms around these children is nothing short of extraordinary, and what they have to teach all of us in the process is equally so. Listen in to hear about a baby once wheeled into a corner and left to die, who found love in the Salcherts arms, as well as other stories about real children with real needs, and how Cori and Mark Salchert are ensuring every moment of these shortened lives is as special as it can be. You guys... prepare to be amazed! My guest is Cori Salchert and I originally heard about her when they featured her on the Today Show. Cori is an angel who in addition to having 8 kids of her own, became a medically trained foster care mother, along with her husband. They take in babies who need a home to live out their days, and she provides not only that home and the medical care they need, but also an incredible love that is undoubtedly life sustaining for these fragile babies. Her work with hospice babies and other foster children is remarkable and we talk about that work, along with her evolution in parenting. It's the most touching interview. You're going to love it!
