Episode 81 of Messy Jesus Business podcast, with Sister Julia Walsh. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Subscribe: Email | RSS | More "A culture of encounter is something we have to be very intent on practicing, and so I'm excited about an economics that creates many of those opportunities for encounter." -Elizabeth Barlow IN THIS EPISODE In the latest episode of Messy Jesus Business podcast, Sister Julia Walsh FSPA chats with Elizabeth Garlow, economist and cofounder of the Francesco Collaborative, which invites individuals to critique economic structures and invest using their whole spiritual selves. Elizabeth discusses her early Capuchin influences and her interest in Focolare. "I had a sort of hunger to have a different kind of conversation about who we are as human beings," she says, "how we meet our needs, what kind of systems can we create?" Sister Julia and Elizabeth talk about the damage that can be done by our current economic structures. "Our economic structures are intertwined with problems of disconnection and loneliness," Elizabeth says. Elizabeth also discusses the challenging ways we can move forward to help create a more just world. "Money in many ways is energy, " she says. "It's flow. It is not something that we are slaves to as the Gospel...teaches us." Name Drops: Natalie FosterPope FrancisMia BirdsongFr. Richard WardMarjorie KellyFr. She co-founded the Francesco Collaborative, which was in part inspired by the kinds of spaces she longed to be a part of as an investor: one that invites us to show up as our spiritually rooted selves, with deep vulnerability, care for one another and a commitment to critique the structural problems of our economy and dream about our role in its transformation. Through her work, she supports protagonists of transformation drawing on lineages of faith, spirituality, and wisdom to ask questions like: “what is enough?” and “what does a practice of finance and investing fit for the needs of our time look like”? These questions are in part drawn from her formation in the Focolare Movement's Economy of Communion initiative, where enterprises seek to embody a relational economy paradigm. Elizabeth previously co-led impact investing for the Lumina Foundation, served as a policy advisor with the Obama Administration, and co-founded a Detroit- based organization, Michigan Corps, to invest in local entrepreneurs through crowdfunding and innovative forms of patient capital. She studied political economy at Kalamazoo College, completed her graduate work in public policy and economics at Princeton University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in 2019. Elizabeth lives in Michigan, where she is enjoying getting reacquainted with Michigan's Great Lakes and apprenticing with urban farmers in Detroit. Jim Garlow, was one of the first people to post about the Asbury University revival on social media when it started 13 days ago. In a follow-up interview, he explains what sounded like waves of an ocean as he stood in the wooden pews worshipping God in Hughes Auditorium. In my first conversation with Garlow, we talk about the tie between the Asbury revival and the Third Great Awakening. Now he is sharing his eyewitness view of what happened right before Asbury University announced the revival would stop on campus Wednesday, Feb. 22nd. "Just continual worship and praise. Bunch of students standing on the stage and the auditorium is packed," he says. Garlow heard from officials at the revival that 25,000 people came to Wilmore, Kentucky on Saturday. Cars were backed up 1.3 miles with 'revival at capacity' signs lit up on the highway... ... For Garlow, this has changed his focus in ministry. He is now asking God how he can take what he has seen and experienced firsthand at Asbury University to the rest of the world. Check out www.WellVersedWorld.org where Garlow is gathering together all of the videos and pictures posted from the revival for record keeping. #JimGarlow #asburyrevival #StrangReport #RevivalofRepentance #eyewitness
Jim Garlow was one of the first people to post about the Asbury University revival and what he was hearing from leaders at auditorium. The revival on day six and it hasn't stopped yet. People from around the country are heading to Wilmore, Kentucky to experience the first rain in a long drought. Garlow questions whether this could be the start of the Third Great Awakening.
Preaching for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Elizabeth Garlow invites us to the ecological conversion called for in Laudato Si': "We will have to let go of the short-termism and instant gratification that is so pervasive. We will need to adopt a longer-term view, one that helps us understand what it might look like to live in ways that would make us good ancestors. It reminds me of the passage in today's Gospel parable where God says to the harvester - ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'" Elizabeth Garlow has worked in the areas of social entrepreneurship, impact investing and public policy with an eye toward building an economy rooted in solidarity and mutual care. Three years ago, Elizabeth was moved by the launch of the global Economy of Francesco Movement to co-find the Francesco Collaborative, a network of investors, entrepreneurs and other changemakers seeking to respond to Pope Francis' call to be “protagonists of transformation” in our economy. Today, she runs “Livable Future Investing” workshops through the Francesco Collaborative, inviting investors to discern and embrace their most important work in building the solidarity economy. She also accompanies religious congregations as they discern how to align their assets with mission in an ever-evolving world. She also conducts research on well-being economics as a fellow with New America. Elizabeth holds a BA from Kalamazoo College and a Master's in public policy and economics from Princeton University. She loves swimming, playing folk music, and making a home in the Detroit area with her partner Paul and their new daughter Sophia. Dr. Garlow's Future Conferences are designed to bring the biblical worldview to life as he shares the status of America and what we can be doing to protect American values.

Classic Influence Podcast: Timeless Lessons from the Legends of Leadership, Power, Hustle and Grit
Joan of Arc's story remains one of the most remarkable stories in the long history of military leadership. Consider this singular, striking distinction: “Since the writing of human history began, Joan of Arc is the only person, of either sex, who has ever held supreme command of the military forces of a nation at the age of seventeen” (Garlow). In the words of Winston Churchill, “Joan of Arc was a being so uplifted from the ordinary run of mankind that she finds no equal in a thousand years.” But what is it that set Joan of Arc so far apart? In this episode of Classic Influence, we'll travel back to France during the Hundred Years' War to explore the most critical, definitive factor in her success, the key lessons we can learn from her example, and why the wisdom of her leadership continues to echo across time.

Dr. Jim Garlow sits down with Alliance Defending Freedom’s (ADF) Senior Counsel, Jeremiah Galus, to discuss the lawsuit Skyline Wesleyan Church v. California Department of Managed Health Care. For 23 years, Dr. Garlow was the Senior Pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego, California up until the end of 2018. On May 13, 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled Wednesday that a San Diego–area church properly challenged the state’s abortion-coverage mandate and that a lower district court was wrong to dismiss the church’s claims. The 9th Circuit recognized that Skyline Church suffered an injury when the state issued its August 2014 letters mandating that church healthcare plans cover elective abortions. ADF is seeking to protect Skyline Church and all churches from government mandates that violate their sincerely held religious beliefs, in particular when they are forced to pay for ending human life. For more information on this case and the work that ADF does, please go to www.ADFLegal.org. Rowan Garlow is one of those souls you simply won't forget! She is a Completion Process Practitioner and a Parts work facilitator. Rowan is extremely passionate about helping others and herself to heal from trauma! She holds monthly workshops, which I totally recommend! Also if you want to work with her 1-1, be ready for some major shifts! All you got to do is show up! “I am truly passionate about spreading this knowledge, so people become empowered in their lives and begin to trust themselves again. Most of us don’t trust ourselves, because we have spent our whole lives abandoning ourselves, and our pain. We do this in favor of wanting to escape it, in an attempt to feel better. But, we don’t end up feeling better, because it’s never going to feel good, having conditional presence for ourselves.” - Rowan Garlow Instagram & Facebook - @RowanGarlow YouTube - Rowan Garlow Website - rowangarlow.com

I read from “Is Honey Vegan?” By A.R.L. Garlow from the chapter Does Eating Honey Harm Bees? Primarily, I discuss the process of caring for animals or plants in a way that enables them to produce abundantly and then in return we receive their byproducts as a gift rather than simply taking. I hope you enjoy this episode! It would be wonderful if you left a positive review wherever you listen or share your favourite episode with a friend. The music is by Beach Towels and the song is called Sun Soaked. Thanks for listening and you can see my writing or photography at the links below. masonunrau.com http://www.masonunrau.com/blog/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/masonunrau/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/MasonUnrauPhotography/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/masonunrau
This episode I read the last paragraph from “Is Honey Vegan?” by A.R.L. Garlow. It's a quick read with lots of information but I have a few minor disagreements with the last paragraph as well as some other secondary points. I share a bit about my own early experience beekeeping and my hope to avoid isolating us from engaging with the production of animal byproducts.
