On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we get the old band back together for one more gig. Joining us are Explora writers and podcast veterans Todd Vorenkamp and Shawn Steiner. In addition, we welcome Dana Glidden, the B&H social media manager, to join us. Glidden attended this year’s camera trade fair, which was held from September 26-29, 2018, in Cologne, Germany. We start the episode with Glidden, who provides an overview of the biggest, and perhaps most important camera expo on the planet, and then we go to Steiner and Vorenkamp to fill us in on the most impressive of the cameras, lenses, and other gear announced at this year’s show. Although announced before photokina, the Canon EOS R and the Nikon Z6 and Z7 mirrorless full-frame cameras were still the biggest draw at the convention. Eventually moving on to digital cameras with my first digital SLR being the Olympus E410 four-thirds system. I had a couple of lenses for this, the kit lens 14-42 and the 70-300 zoom 4-5.6. I now own the Olympus OM-D EM10 MK1 with a 17mm f1.8 lens. This combination is perfect for street photography but I do also enjoy other types of photography especially wildlife. For this I do need more focal length and the obvious thing would be to purchase a new lens but money is tight and I already have lenses that could be used to get closer. I use the 70-300 with the Olympus four-thirds adapter on my OM-D EM10 body. The problem is, it’s very slow to focus. A google search gave me the impression that some newer Olympus bodies were better able to focus this type of lens. Is this the case and would I be better off with an EM-1 I or II or are there some settings that I can make that would aid the use of this lens?
