In this week Colin offers advice on how to draw a close up of a gnarled tree trunk and also show the finished picture of the dog running through grass. Colin discusses how he customised the depth of field to draw attention to the areas of the picture he wanted the viewer to focus on.
We often think of depth of field as also defining sharpness but there are other considerations. In this episode we discuss these realities.
Better Fuji Photos Episode 40: Mastering Depth of Field - It's Not Just Aperture! Maybe you've been there. You're wondering why your photo created at f/22 has a sharp foreground but a blurry background, even though it was at f/22. Or why your photo made at f/1.4 doesn't have a blurry background like f/1.4 photos should. That's because, as educators, we've failed to emphasize how depth of field is equally affected by variables other than your aperture. Focal length, focus distance, and how the photo is viewed also affect your depth of field. In this episode, we'll discuss how: Wider focal lengths give you deeper depths of field Further focus distances give you deeper depths of field Smaller apertures give you deeper depths of field And how all three combine to give you a final depth of field Read the accompanying web article here: https://jmpeltier.com/what-affects-depth-of-field/ Take the Advanced Depth of Field course: https://photocourses.link/dof Explore the Fujifilm Photographer Membership options: https://photocourses.link/fujimembers Please subscribe, rate, and review wherever you prefer to listen to your podcasts so we can keep this show going. HT1711 - Ultra-Deep Depth of Field Last weekend in Acadia, I was photographing floating leaves on a pond. To gain access, I was using a long telephoto lens which resulted in many images with insufficient depth of field. The ones that solved that problem were the focus blends and 100% of the images that I photographed with my ultra-wide lens.

Bruce Gilden is a street-photography icon. With summer in full swing and International Street Photography Day (otherwise known as Henry Cartier-Bresson's birthday) looming on the horizon, what better time to feature a lively chat with the master himself, recorded at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference, just before the Magnum photographer's keynote lecture. Gilden's emotionally fraught depictions of real people up close are an acquired taste, and we address this aspect of his work during our chat, with Allan admitting that Gilden's work has terrified him in the past. We also touch on a somewhat surprising facet of Gilden's career—fashion photography—as he discusses making pictures for high-end clients such as Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabana, and Diesel. From the influence of early 20th-century mugshots on Gilden's aesthetic to the importance of making, and living with, visual choices to keep the photography fresh, our discussion covers a lot of ground. Stay to the end to learn about Gilden's long held photographic wish—photographing murder in a beautiful way. And for anyone who's ever fantasized about a taking workshop with Gilden, check out the link below to his upcoming street photography workshop in New York! The integration of AI technologies with Adobe software has set the creative world on its head. To get a read on this hot-button, rapidly evolving field, we tapped two generations of tech wizardry—Scott Kelby, the original Photoshop Guy, and retouching powerhouse Kristina Sherk. We sat down with both of these experts at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference in February 2023. Our first guest is Scott Kelby, the original Photoshop guy, who discusses the good and the bad of AI technology, from how it helps create workflow efficiencies to the potential for costing some photographers a job. Kelby envisions a future comprising high-end pros and serious iPhoneographers. With this in mind, we delve into the growing advantages of capturing images on a mobile device, while also identifying subjects that still require more robust gear. After a break, Kristina Sherk shares details about the powerful AI selection tools integrated into the Classic and Mobile versions of Adobe Lightroom, which are disruptive in a good way. Stay to the end for her story about saving the day for a wedding photographer whose sharp focus was disrupted by a rogue officiant, who stepped in front of the lens just before a couple's first kiss. Like good acting—and skilled retouching—masterful lighting is an accomplished skill that should remain mostly unseen. This is the takeaway from our conversations with two great lighting whisperers, Canon technical advisor Eric Stoner and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally. We sat down with both of these experts earlier this year at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference. Our first guest is Eric Stoner, a Canon technical advisor who specializes in creating portraits with Speedlites and colored gels. He offers insights about the high degree of control these tools provide, describing how adding colored gels boosts creative improvisation and heightens impact. We also discuss the technological advances of the past 20 years, while reflecting on how great photography still hinges on learning the craft and connecting with your subjects. After a break, Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally discusses his mission to light photographs in a way that provides an unfettered experience for the viewer. In addition, we explore his long and successful career as a working professional, from his formative years as a LIFE magazine staff photographer to the recent exhibition of those very same images in a fine art gallery. Stay to the end to learn about his latest book The Real Deal, which he wrote during COVID, and hear about his busy schedule of international workshops. We also talk about a few examples of our favorite film editing that refuses to simply hold the audience by the hand to explain everything that's happening in the narrative.LINKS24mm: Focal Length Series35mm: Focal Length Series50mm: Focal Length Series85mm: Focal Length SeriesBaz Luhrmann's ElvisEdge of TomorrowPharrell Williams - Freedom13 Minutes to the MoonIteration 65: When the Teacher DisappearsCONNECT WITH SEANWebsite: http://seantucker.photography Twitter: @seantuck Instagram: @seantuck YouTube: Sean TuckerCONNECT WITH JEFFERYWebsite: https://jefferysaddoris.com Twitter: @jefferysaddoris Instagram: @jefferysaddorisYou can also connect with both of us by sending an email to deepnatter@gmail.com.SUBSCRIBESubscribe to Jeffery Saddoris: Everything in your favorite podcast app to get every show I release in one feed.SUPPORTLeave a review or a rating wherever you listen, or you can DONATE to support the shows more directly.MUSICHigh Line by DuffmusiqMusic featured in this episode is licensed from Artlist, which is a terrific music licensing platform for YouTubers and filmmakers. We are talking about high quality, Hollywood style depth of field being introduced to everyday television broadcast. Listen to Kyle, Connor, and Phil chat about its recent appearance in more TV broadcasts, the pros and cons, and how you don't need 8k cameras to use this method in your own videos to make them stand out!

HT1201 - Elusive Depth of Field It seems that in the last few years there's been a tremendous push for shallow depth of field. But in my work, the Holy Grail has always been the pursuit of a tremendous depth of field with everything tack sharp from near to far. That used to be helped with tilt and swing cameras, very small apertures, and a ritual goat sacrifice. Now we have focus stacking and goats everywhere breathe a sigh of relief.

We all love our gear and get very precious about our cameras, lenses and kit. We drool over the latest improvements in ISO, sensor quality and speed when new cameras are released. But no matter how good our cameras may be, do we follow the essential rules of taking better photos? Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, George Clooney.....names we all know. But who was the greatest person ever to be photographed? Who really knew what to do when in front of the camera? Take a look at the Superbowl camera shots Mark has been discussing by clicking the following YouTube link - skip to 1:50 seconds for a good example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KVa8xJgOaA Check back every Thursday to be sure that you don't miss a single episode. Serena Williams descended upon the clay courts of the French Open in Paris this week, where, the year prior, she had become a lodestar of ridiculous controversy. In one early bout, Williams' decision to wear a black catsuit resulted in a violation; the form of dress has since been banned by the French Tennis Federation. "The combination of Serena this year, for example, it will no longer be accepted," FTF President Bernard Giudicelli told Tennis magazine.
