On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss the long-awaited roll out of Apple CarPlay Ultra and Samsung's all-new S25 Edge, which is positioned to rival the iPhone 17 Air later this year. Apple this week announced CarPlay Ultra, its next-generation CarPlay experience. CarPlay Ultra fully extends across all of the vehicle's display, including the instrument cluster. It provides access to real-time vehicle data, supports iPhonewidgets, theme options, instrument cluster display customizations, and introduces integrations for vehicle functions. CarPlay Ultra is available first in new Aston Martin models in North America. Existing Aston Martin vehicles will also support CarPlay Ultra through forthcoming software updates. Looking ahead, Apple says it has secured commitments from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to bring CarPlay Ultra to their vehicles in the coming year. Other automakers are expected to follow. In other news, Samsung this week announced the Galaxy S25 Edge — a device clearly designed to undercut the iPhone 17 Air's expected appeal, with both smartphones aiming to be the thinnest in their respective ecosystems. The Galaxy S25 Edge sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, a titanium frame, and a remarkably slim 5.8mm profile, weighing in at just 163 grams. It features a dual-lens camera system, including a 200MP wide-angle sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide camera, supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Samsung is also pushing its AI credentials with features like Drawing Assist and Audio Eraser. In contrast, the iPhone 17 Air is rumored to be even thinner at just 5.5mm, making it Apple's slimmest iPhone ever. It is expected to feature a 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion. Apple is said to be removing the ultra-wide camera entirely and opting for a single 48MP wide camera, removing the SIM card tray, and the secondary stereo speaker to save internal space. Other expected specifications include a 24MP front-facing camera, 12GB of RAM, and the A19 chip. While the iPhone 17 Air may win the title of thinnest flagship, it could come with a major compromise: battery life. According to internal testing leaks, only 60–70% of users are expected to get through a full day on a single charge — a notable drop from the 80–90% seen with other recent iPhone models. Apple is reportedly using a higher-density battery and its custom C1 modem to squeeze as much efficiency as possible into the super-thin design. To address this, Apple is reportedly developing a new USB-C battery case, designed to extend the iPhone 17 Air's runtime. The accessory could launch alongside the device to help mitigate negative perceptions around longevity

Die Frage nach der richtigen Kamera kommt bei vielen Tauchern früher oder später auf. Gründe hierfür sind in den wenigsten Fällen der Wunsch nach “High-End” Bildern, sondern vielmehr der nahende Urlaub, welcher festgehalten werden soll. Auf der einen Seite will man anständige Bilder - aber auch nicht zu viel ausgeben. Und am besten auch noch das Reisegepäck flach halten. Was ist also die ideale Kamera? Der Griff zu der leichten Actioncam ist verlockend… Und die Frage stellt sich nicht nur im Tauchsport. Schüler und frisch zertifizierte Taucher sollten, genau wie auch die erfahrenen unter uns, bei der Mitnahme einer Kamera immer vorsichtig sein und auch bedenken, dass die Kamera an sich Risiken bildet. Hierzu gehören Ablenkung und zusätzlicher Stress… Gerade eine kleine Kamera verleitet dazu, die “menschlichen” Faktoren zu vernachlässigen. Also lieber erstmal mit der Ausrüstung sicher werden und im Wasser sowie am Tauchspot mit den Bedingungen sicher werden. DIe Actioncam muss allerdings nicht die beste Lösung für jeden Anwendungszweck sein. Verschiedene Fotografielösungen sind am Markt verfügbar und reichen von großen, klobigen Unterwassergehäusen mit großen Sensoren und professioneller Beleuchtung über wasserdichte Kompaktkameras bis hin zu Actioncams oder wasserdichten Handyhüllen. Es gilt, die eigenen Absichten zu hinterfragen und eine individuelle Lösung zu finden. Wie kommt aber technisch gesehen ein gutes Bild zu Stande und welche Faktoren können wir beeinflussen? Grundlage sind immer die physikalischen Eigenschaften von Licht. Diese gelten für alle Kameras und können nicht beeinflusst werden. Die Software kann nur mit den Daten des Sensors arbeiten, die vorhanden sind. Eine Linse der Kamera muss möglichst viel Licht zum Sensor lassen und dabei möglichst wenig optische Fehler verursachen. Je mehr Licht zum Sensor vordringt, desto mehr kann dieser verarbeiten. Dabei zählt allerdings nicht nur die (häufig große) Frontfläche der Linse, sondern vielmehr der engste Punkt der Optik. Dieser wird mit der größtmöglichen Lichtleistung in Blendenwerten ausgedrückt. Je kleiner die angegebene Zahl ist, desto besser ist der Lichtdurchlass. So lässt eine Optik mit dem Wert f 1.4 mehr Licht ein, als eine Optik mit dem Wert f 5.6. Aber Achtung: Die Werte lassen sich nicht direkt vergleichen, sondern müssen zum Bildsensor in Relation gesetzt werden… Der Bildsensor muss nun seinerseits mit dem vorhandenen Licht gut umgehen können. Hierbei ist allerdings eine hohe Megapixelzahl nicht immer von Vorteil: Die hohe Sensordichte auf dem Chip hat zu Folge, dass die einzelen Sensorzelle auch kleiner ist und weniger Licht aufnimmt. Durch die dünnere Bauart der Kontakte wird außerdem die Störanfälligkeit bei hohen Empfindlichkeiten in schlechtem Licht größer und es kann Bildrauschen entstehen. Während ich im alltäglichen Einsatz “über Wasser” mit 24MP fotografiere, kommt unter Wasser eher ein Body mit 12MP zum Einsatz. Dieser Sensor performt auch unter dunklen Lichtverhältnissen sehr gut und ist wenig anfällig für Bildrauschen. Viel entscheidender ist die Gesamtgröße des Sensors. Ein großer Sensor hat in der Regel bei schlechtem Licht eine bessere Leistung. Genauso wie eine große Solaranlage auf dem Dach mehr Strom produziert… Hinweis: Wir kommen im Podcast immer wieder auf die “Gopro” oder auch andere Kameratypen zu sprechen. Auch wenn wir hier Namen verwenden, gelten die Limitationen und Überlegungen für alle Hersteller. Auch die Spezifikationen ähneln sich oft sehr stark.

The Covid-19 pandemic has inarguably set back efforts to eliminate poverty among Malaysian society. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the pandemic raised the incidence of absolute poverty to 8.4% in 2020, compared to 5.6% in 2019. The government has reiterated its commitment to tackle poverty and income inequality under the 12th Malaysia Plan, with the aim of eradicating hardcore poverty by 2025. Opening Monologue A reminder for my upcoming SmugMug subscription renewal arrived yesterday saying that I could lock-in the low rate of $85 if I pay for an entire year. Since the pandemic, I haven't used SmugMug once because I'm not doing client shoots. And it got me thinking about the rest of my annual charges. I think it's time to take stock of all my photo sharing subscriptions. And that's the focus of today's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 782 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In Do I Really Need All Those Photo Subscriptions? I think part of what I had to deal with concerning this project was acknowledging that I'm not the same photographer I was at the beginning of 2020. Most of my assignments are created by me for my blog posts, LinkedIn Learning trainings, Medium articles, and workshops. I really don't need models anymore because I still can't interact with them, and I don't need sites to manage online galleries for those models and clients. Things have really changed. And the SmugMug renewal notice brought all of this home. So here's what I've been working on. The subscriptions I've decided to discontinue, I've been downloading all of my content off them in preparation to end the service. I had to start this ahead of time to allow the days required to ensure I got everything. Looking back over the last 10 years of work, I was amazed at how much content I had online. With SmugMug, for example, it was gallery after gallery that I downloaded. But I did so one at a time so I could organize the work on my backup hard drive. I just chip away at it while working on other projects. So, what did I keep, and what did I let go? Let's take a look. SmugMug - Let Go $85 a year - I really like SmugMug, and it was my go-to service for client password-protected galleries. Their organization, features list, and rendering are terrific. But I just don't do that work anymore, and it doesn't make sense to pay them $85 a year to archive that content. I've moved it all offline on to my backup hard drives. Flicker Pro - Keep $59 a year - Fortunately, SmugMug bought Flickr, so they still get some of my money. I'm keeping Flickr because it's cheaper, more versatile, and I have a deeper history of images there. Plus, we have the TDS Online Community on Flickr that I love, and draw images from for the TDS Member Photo of the Day. Flickr stays. (You might want to check out The Digital Story Public Group on Flickr where we have more than 80,000 images by TDS members. It's great!) Adobe Photography Plan (20GB) - Keep $9.99 a month - I like Lightroom and love having access to the latest Adobe photography features with this plan. I don't keep it for the storage, rather for the apps. And I appreciate them keeping the price stable over the years. Model Mayhem - Let Go $35 every 6 months - I have met many terrific people via Model Mayhem and hundreds of wonderful photographs have resulted. But again, my life is different now. I ended my subscription. Dropbox Plus 2TB - Keep $119 a year - Even though Dropbox is more than a photography plan, I use it mainly for that. And because of its versatility and popularity, it has keep its relevance even in this new chapter of my career. My online clients use it, and I need it as much as ever. iCloud 2TB - Keep $9.99 a month - If I had to keep just one cloud storage service, it would be iCloud. Since I'm in the Apple ecosystem, this services manages all the work I do on my Mac, including my photos. I wish they had a level in-between 200 GB (which isn't enough) and 2 TB (which gives me lots of head room). Regardless, it's a keeper for me. So, I've managed to trip 1/3 of my services in 2021. I'll review everything again in 2022 and go from there. Who knows what my world will be like by then? The Vanagon is Gone! I know this is a story near and dear to many hearts in our community, but I've sold the Vanagon that I used for workshops over the years, a vehicle filled with 20 years of fond memories. I've been working on it since that one miserable hot summer day a few years back when I had to have it towed from SF to Santa Rosa. I had feared that she died that day. But like a Phoenix from the ashes, she came back to full functionality. Of course, this included hours of my sweat equity combined with a few trips to Hans in Sebastopol. And on the day that I handed over the pink slip to a young German pre-med student and his girlfriend, she was running like a top. I honestly had a lump in my throat watching her drive away. Fortunately, Vanagons retain an excellent resale value on the used market, and the cash payment for my 1990 will be a sizable part of the downpayment for my new all-electric VW ID.4 5 passenger SUV. This begins a new chapter in my road trip adventures. I'll be using the ID.4 for upcoming workshops and my ongoing exploration of the world. I placed my reservation back in February, and was able to place the order just last week. So the new car is currently being built, and I should be behind the wheel by late April. Adobe just dropped its latest software updates via the Creative Cloud and among those updates is a new feature in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) called "Super Resolution." You can mark this day down as a major shift in the photo industry. I have seen a bit of reporting out there on this topic from the likes of PetaPixel and Fstoppers, but other than that the ramifications of this new feature in ACR have not been widely promoted from what I can see. The new Super Resolution feature in ACR essentially upsizes the image by a factor of four using machine learning, i.e. Artificial Intelligence (AI). What does this mean practically? Well, I immediately tested this out and was pretty shocked by the results. Though it might be hard to make out in the screenshot below, I took the surfing image shown below, which was captured a decade ago with a Nikon D700 -- a 12MP camera -- and ran the Super Resolution tool on it and the end result is a 48.2MP image that looks to be every bit as sharp (if not sharper) than the original image file. This means that I can now print that old 12MP image at significantly larger sizes than I ever could before. What this also means is that anyone with a lower resolution camera, i.e. the current crop of 24MP cameras, can now output huge image files for prints or any other usage that requires a higher resolution image file. In the three or four images I have run through this new feature in Photoshop I have found the results to be astoundingly good. Opening Monologue Going back to our roots in nimble photography, the thinking has always been, "travel lightly and take only pictures." Now, as we begin to think about post-pandemic exploration, the world of electric vehicles has become very interesting. And combining emissions-free travel with nimble photography feels like a match made in heaven. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 779 Exploring the World of Electric Vehicles and Photography Like many of the lightening bolts that have struck me, this concept is the result of ideas and situations. Today I'm going to explain how this all came about, and where it's going from here. I've been interested in EV for some time. Many of you know that I'm on the notification list for the Volkswagen Buzz, their reimagined bus that's all electric. My thinking has been that I'm going to sell my 1990 VW Vanagon to help with the down payment for the Buzz. However, due to the pandemic, VW has slowed their plans for the bus and decided to move forward with a new SUV/Crossover body design called the ID.4. They notified me about the reservation system that was in place for the ID.4. I really liked what I saw, and have since begun the process of buying one. I should have it this year. Next came the notion of what I'm going to do once we emerge from the pandemic. Yes, I will fly when necessary, but I'm thinking more of road tripping for my photography adventures. I've been fine-tuning my self-contained travel approach on road trips to visit my mom in Southern California. I've discovered that I can travel without interaction or physical contact with other people. I just need a bigger car than my Audi A3. About this time, the movie Nomadland was released starring Frances McDormand. The film takes us inside the lives of those who choose to live in their tricked out vans and RVs. Even though I don't want this for my everyday life, I am interested in approach for my photography adventures. And finally, I feel like I need to take the next step toward helping this planet survive. My brother-in-law is about to embark on a home solar project that I'm going to shadow to absorb as much knowledge as possible. If I could install a smaller version of his project for charging the EV, then my transportation would be totally green. This brings us to a new group that I've opened up at DerrickStoryOnline titled EV Explorers. The tagline for this group is: "Bringing Curiosity and Nimbleosity to the World of Electric Vehicle Transportation." Here we can share information, tips, discoveries and more about using electric vehicles for our photography adventures. If you want to join this group, click on this link for an invite. I mostly shoot weddings and families with a Nikon D750 and have an X-T10 for fun. I want to switch completely to the Fuji X-T2. There are other mirrorless brands but they just don’t interest me and I don’t want full frame due to the size of the lens. The one thing that is holding me back is the time between shutter actuation on the X-T10. I know Marco uses the X-T2 and was curious if he has noticed it on that camera. In this episode, Marcello Sukhdeo talks about the top smartwatch for last quarter and about Fitbit’s new smartwatch. Also, some good news for Blackberry, the KeyOne is selling faster than expected. Show Notes: The smartwatch craze is growing with Apple Watch leading the way as the top smartwatch last quarter. According to IDC, Apple Watch was the world's most popular smartwatch by a significant margin last quarter, with an estimated 49.6 per cent market share. IDC estimates Apple Watch shipments totaled 3.4 million units in the quarter, well ahead of runner-up Samsung's estimated 800,000 smartwatches shipped. Garmin trailed in third place with an estimated 600,000 shipments. "The transition towards more intelligent and feature-filled wearables is in full swing," a senior research analyst for IDC said. "For years, rudimentary fitness trackers have acted as a gateway to smartwatches and now we're at a point where brands and consumers are graduating to a more sophisticated device." That's true, we are seeing an uptrend for smartwatches which have fitness capabilities and other apps functionalities together in one device, like the Apple Watch and Samsung Gear. Fitbit Ionic Fitbit announced recently their new smartwatch. It's the Fitbit Ionic and its available for preorder at $300 US. The Ionic looks like a cross between the Apple Watch and the Fitbit Blaze, with a rectangular LCD touch screen which makes it stand out from the many circular smartwatches on the market. The screen measures 1.2 by 0.85 inches, with a resolution of 348 by 250 pixels. It's surrounded by a bezel, thicker at the bottom than at the sides or top, which gives a look of a square face. The Ionic is compatible across mobile platforms so you can use it on Android and iOS. The Ionic isn't meant to be a standalone smartwatch. While you can get all your customary call, text, and app notifications, there's no LTE connectivity for making calls or replying to texts without your phone nearby. You also need your phone for the initial setup, syncing data, customizing clock faces, and tweaking your preferences. A single charge is estimated to last four days, or up to 10 hours while using GPS. That's outstanding for a smartwatch—most only last for two days max. The Ionic is an exercise companion and wellness monitor. KeyOne Blackberry's latest smartphone, the KeyOne is selling faster than expected. This has prompted TCL Communications, that's the company that manufactures Blackberry handsets to introduce the Blackberry KeyOne Black Edition. The KeyOne is an Android-powered smartphone that comes with an excellent keyboard and some unique BlackBerry customization. It is reported that as soon as the KeyOne hits new markets, like for example in China, it often sold out in a matter of hours after launch. The new KeyOne Black Edition comes with beefed-up specs, featuring 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, up from 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. Other specs remain the same: a Snapdragon 625 processor, 4.5-inch 1080p screen, 12MP rear camera, 8MP front camera, and 3,505mAh battery. Battery life is great. It will be available in Canada $799. TECH BYTES SanDisk has announced a new 400GB MicroSD card that now claims the title of the world's largest storage capacity for a MicroSD card. This beats Samsung's 256GB card from last year. The SanDisk 400GB card can transfer files at up to 100MB/s, is classified as a SDXC UHS-I card, and is rated as an App Performance Class A1 device (i.e., it'll run apps well). As is always the case with these ultra-high storage products, there is a catch — you can get one at the hefty price tag of $250.00. A bug in Instagram that allowed criminals to steal the private information of celebrities has come to light just days after hackers took over the account of Selena Gomez to post nude pictures of Justin Bieber. Instagram admitted that the bug within its application programming interface (API) allowed at least one person to gain access to the private email addresses and phone numbers of high-profile users. Instagram said that it was contacting all its “verified” account holders, which are mainly celebrities and sportspeople. The exposure of the private details of celebrities comes just days after the most popular person on the service, Gomez, who has 125 million followers, had her account compromised on Monday. Hackers posted several nude photos of her ex-boyfriend Bieber, leading to the account being suspended by Instagram. Gomez regained control of her account and scrubbed the feed of the nude images. And finally, it now official, Apple has set Sept. 12 for its most significant new product announcement in years. The event will be the first at its new Apple Park campus and will take place in a theatre named for company co-founder Steve Jobs. An eagle-eyed resident of California has spotted one of Apple’s Lexus SUVs recently, sporting a brand new LIDAR set up. The LIDAR systems on the car are designed to send out laser beams to allow the car to accurately detect its surroundings, essentially creating a 3D map of the environment around the vehicle. GPS, wheel sensors, and cameras are all used to assist in the self-driving functionality. Samsung mobile president, DJ Koh, has told CNBC last week that Samsung is working on a smart speaker. "Maybe soon we will announce it. I am already working on it," Koh said. He went on to say, "As I mentioned I wanted to provide a fruitful user experience at home with Samsung devices, and I want to be moving quite heavily on it." Google Assistant has been launched on iOS in Australia, Germany, France and the UK. The Google Assistant is 137 megabytes in size and requires iOS 9.1 or later. It is compatible with iPad, along with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Samsung has announced its Galaxy Note 8 at an event in New York last week. It features a 6.3” AMOLED display, with no side bezels, though it does have small bezels at the top and bottom. It features a dual-12MP camera set up, with one wide angle and one telephoto lens. Like the S8, it will have facial recognition, and Iris Scanning as ways to unlock the phone. A fingerprint scanner remains on the back of the phone.
