German death metal powerhouse Defeated Sanity have announced a co-headlining tour of Australia with Brisbane death outfit Disentomb.Known for pushing the parameters of their chosen genre and experimenting in ways that some purists might consider blasphemous, Defeated Sanity are a band who live and die by their own sword. They are an enigma in the rapidly growing world of death metal and are bracing to decimate the minds and eardrums of the nation when the tour kicks off on July 7.Bass player Jacob Schmidt joined HEAVY to talk about the tour, starting with the sheer excitement of finally being able to travel outside of your home country with your music."Yes, yes, it really is exciting,” he beamed. “That's actually gonna be our first time down there too so after everything with the last two years we're just glad to be back on the road and doing it and hitting new placed."Coming in blind can be a good thing, but Schmidt admits the band have done their homework a little."Everybody from down there is telling us to expect only great things,” he expressed. “Everybody says the shows are gonna be packed and wild and people are gonna get crazy. The bar has been set high, but I'm always trying to tame my own expectations and not expect only good things to happen. I try to take things as they come BUT I do think it's going to be a good one and we've been in touch with a lot of fans and bands from Australia for many, many years. We have definitely sent a lot of merch down there so that's a sign there is definitely demand for Defeated Sanity Down Under.”In the full interview, Jacob talks about co-headlining with Disentomb, the pro's and cons of doing so, their live show and what to expect, working on your live show during COVID, the early days of the band, future plans and more.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guests this week are Cory Smarsh and Jacob Toy, guitarists in Deathcore/Death Metal band Signs of the Swarm. Cory and Jacob take me through their roots of heavy metal and the records and bands that got them into the genre, we even have a similar band that got us into the genre, which was Hatebreed. The two tell me about the writing process for this record and how there is no shortage of inspiration or riffs between the two guitarists and how they're always writing. This album really see's the band step more into the Death Metal realm and Cory and Jacob told me how they wanted to really just “Write this album for ourselves” the two are fairly young and the band is only on their 3rd record so the sky is the limit with where these guys can go in the future. The band is about to embark on the “Bloodletting North America” Tour with Disentomb, Visceral Disgorge, Organectomy, Continuum and Mental Cruelty. The tour starts September the 13th and runs through October the 13th. The bands album “Vital Deprivation” comes out October 11th on Unique Leader records.

Nick Keller is a Senior Concept Artist at Weta Digital (formerly Weta Workshop) and an Illustrator. Many of you may know Weta which was founded by Peter Jackson and have worked on some of the biggest movies our time including Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar, Avengers and many more. You would think that this would be why I was compelled to have a chat with Nick considering he works for one of the more exciting businesses in the world. The real reason however is Nick's own profile as an illustrator and artist, painting and designing album artwork for metal bands in New Zealand and Australia as well as all over the world. If you're a fan of bands such as In Malice's Wake, Disentomb, Dawn of Azazel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Beastwars and Bulletbelt then you will already be well acquainted with his fantastical and surreal imagery which (in my opinion) is quite Beksiński inspired. It's difficult to put into words how incredible Nick's art is. The level of detail and skill that would be required to create artwork of this nature would feel almost beyond reach to most people. At least for me anyway! One of the cool things in this chat with Nick is his humble approach to what he does but also what he believes has helped him over the years to achieve what has to date. We talk a lot about talent and skill, with most cases comes from environment and continuous practice rather than an inherited or genetic trait. We also touch on some of Nick's earlier memories of getting into art, how he landed the job at Weta and the challenges he can face at times working as a concept artist versus his own personal work. His work for bands and other personal peaces helps balance out the often intense and selfless work as a concept artist where some of his creations may not come to light due to preferences of the client. If you're an artist of any type, you will love this chat and get a lot from it. Nick's work is jaw dropping but it's his approach and story which certainly fuels my inspiration to progress past stick figure drawings! To check out Nick's art, follow Weta Digital or learn anything more we discussed. Check out the show notes for all resources and links.
