In this episode of Green Room, Sydney and Chloe reunite after a six-month break to talk about baby Amara, moving chaos, and life settling into a new normal. They share honestly about the updated IHOPKC pastoral team recommendation, the ongoing grief of leaving that movement, and the disorienting process of realizing how much deception and dysfunction shaped their faith. They discuss how old IHOP language still shows up when they pray, what it looks like to relearn prayer without performance, and why staying in the conversation—with Scripture, Jesus, and safe community—matters even when the church sometimes feels complicated and painful.Daily Grace Co Advent Bible Study (not an affiliate link

Sometimes God allows our faith to be tested, not to take something from us but to do something in us. Pastor Shawn McGill shares the story of Abraham to show what it means to truly trust God when the stakes are high. Through Abraham's obedience, we see that every test of faith is really a test of trust.
When we feel spiritually disoriented, God often invites us to revisit the original altars—the sacred places where we first heard His voice and received His direction. This “theology of place” helps us remember the undeniable call that gave our lives purpose, grounding us when culture, comfort, or suffering try to pull us off course. Yet faith doesn't only look back—it also builds forward, creating new altars in uncharted territory as acts of trust, inviting God to meet us again. Both remembering where we began and stepping boldly into new places with God are essential to living out the calling He's placed on our lives. —— Genesis 13: 1-4, 14-18 Abram and Lot Separate 13 So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him. 2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. 3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord. 14 The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. 15 All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[a] forever. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” 18 So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.

This sermon, The Way You Live, reveals how Abraham’s lifestyle choices affected generations. Pastor Rick teaches that the way we live — our habits, conflicts, and worship patterns — not only determines our peace today but also shapes the legacy we leave tomorrow.
As we conclude our time in the book of Ezra, we find some troubling things happening in the final two chapters, that highlight a temptation we all face as followers of Jesus. Rather than taking personal responsibility for how far we've drifted from God's heart, we blame some external force or circumstance. This week, we explore what it means to rebuild our altars from the inside out and return to God's heart.

We'll let Benjamin Sando, research fellow at the Global Taiwan Institute, and our guest for this week's episode, describe the topic: “From the early days of Han Taiwanese society, through the period of Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) martial law and on to the era of democratization, the influence of Taiwan's gangs has evolved. The activity of some gangs (but not all) has spread beyond extracting profit from local territory – through extortion, prostitution, and gambling – to international transactions involving drug, arms, and human trafficking. This has sowed connections between certain Taiwanese gangs and foreign actors, such as Chinese triads and government officials engaging in united front work for the People's Republic of China (PRC). As elections become more competitive in Taiwan, gangs have leveraged their control of prominent Taiwanese temples to influence politicians seeking support from religious communities. Such deep-rooted connections between gangs and local communities obstruct democratic development based on transparency and open debate, especially in Taiwan's rural areas.”NOTE: This episode has been significantly edited to attempt to adhere to the mostly non-political official stance of the Formosa Files podcast. Every altar requires a sacrifice — something that costs you, something that moves heaven. In this life-transforming message, Apostle Vincent Loate reveals the mystery behind Altars and Sacrifice — how the fire of God responds only to what's surrendered at the altar.
Gratitude is more than a feeling, it's a response to God's goodness in our lives. Pastor Shawn uses the life of Noah to illustrate how true, expressed gratitude moves the heart of God.

Historian Tal Howard joins host Dan Hummel to discuss his new book Broken Altars: Secularist Violence in Modern History (Yale University Press). This episode dives deep into the global history of secularism, examining how different forms—passive, combative, and eliminationist—have shaped societies and, in some cases, led to state-sponsored violence against religious communities.

What do you do when the Bible—or moments in your own life—trouble you? This week, we look at a challenging passage in Ezra 9–10 and use it as a case study for navigating our own "what on earth is happening?" moments. We talk about how to examine our assumptions about God, Scripture, and human nature, and how that process can keep us from getting spiritually stuck and instead move us toward deeper trust, wisdom, and intimacy with God.
This is a moment to reflect on connection to God, as Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi shows that God will bless us when we reach out to Him.
Dr. Paul Giesting and Bill Schmitt welcome listeners back for new episodes of our “legacy” podcast, “That's So Second Millennium.” See below for biographies. Check out our archived episodes: That's So Second Millennium Here's a chronological list of popes. For context in this episode, start with Pope Leo XIII (#256) and look through the 20th century for Popes Pius X, XI, and XII. (Please forgive a couple of small historical and mathematical mistakes--at one point Paul says something amounting to 5+7 make 11 or 4+7 make 12.) What's in a name? Paul has developed a sports-inspired bracket for papal names and their likelihood, with 64 possibilities. We'll digitize it and post it in connection with the next episode. Papal tiara logo borrowed from The Mad Monarchist. Pope Leo XIV conforms with Paul's bracket prediction of the “top seed”: With the passing of Pope Francis, Leo was the most likely name to be chosen. Scholars have called the 1660-1836 period as “the long 18th century” in English literature. They point to a “long 19th century” between 1750 and 1914. Here's one take on why Cardinal Robert Prevost chose Leo as his papal name. Leo is now the fourth-most common papal name in history along with Clement. The only more popular names are John, Benedict, and Gregory. Would you like to read the book—Their Name is Pius—that Paul read in his youth? Amazon says it doesn't come cheap. You can also read Eamon Duffy's The Stripping of the Altars. Pope Leo XIV has called for a new Rerum Novarum, according to the Aleteia news site. Here's the bio of St. Francis Xavier, missionary and one of the original seven Jesuits. Yes, there was a Pope Lando, reigning in the years 913-914. Pope Julius I, a canonized saint, reigned in 337-352. Updated bio of Bill Schmitt: Bill Schmitt is a journalist, educator, and marketing communications specialist who has been an adjunct professor of English and media at several schools, most recently Holy Cross College in Notre Dame, IN. He served on the communications staff of the University of Notre Dame from 2003 to 2017, managing many projects and joining in a wide range of multimedia, interdisciplinary collaborations. Since then, his freelance work has included feature-writing, editing, podcasting, and blogging, with much of his work centered on the Catholic faith. After the call is confirmed? This is about the life you live after the fire. October is about the tension between sacred moments and real-life follow-up. What if the things we built in life weren't just dedicated to ourselves? What if we became a people who dedicated our careers, our relationships, our homes, and our entire lives to God? What if we lived as if they served a holy purpose beyond ourselves? This week, we explore the power of dedication as we follow the story of the Israelites dedicating the temple to God in the book of Ezra.
Chris Toews shares in our series, Exodus. This week we look at Exodus 20:22-26 which is a text about laws of altars. Chris shares how this applies to us, as we are to destroy the hidden altars of our hearts and rebuild them with altars to Jesus. Join for an inspiring, convicting, and practical message for us all.
Day of the Dead is Subversive Spirituality! Long before the arrival of Europeans, some of the Indigenous Mesoamerican traditions of honoring the dead were celebrated with two specific feasts: Mikailwitl (feast of the dead), and Wey Mikailwitl (great feast of the dead). These feasts were celebrated in early August through mid-September. In fact, we are currently in the “month” of Mikailwitl right now, as it began on August 8th or the day Chikome Kozkakwawtli in the ancestral Mexika calendar. These celebrations were dedicated to honoring the dead through dance, song, and offerings of food and drink. Altars and burials were adorned with marigolds, a sacred flower thought to attract the spirits so that they might enjoy the offerings left in their memory.Today, these celebrations have been blended with Catholic traditions, and take place on All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Many think that Mikailwitl and Wey Mikailwitl were absorbed into the Allhallowtide (All Saints Day and All Souls Day) under the direction of the Catholic Church, as these Christian holidays also involve honoring the dead. Unfortunately, this popular claim is often repeated without any evidence to back it up. For example, a column about Dia de Muertos published on the website weareyourvoicemag states “in an attempt to convert the natives to Catholicism, the Spanish colonizers moved the celebration to November 1 and 2 (All Saints Day), which is when we celebrate it currently.”But is this how it really happened? Listen and find out as we explore the different ways that our ancestors negotiated and navigated the colonial process by masking their rituals and ceremonies behind a catholic facade! listener comments? One of the most emotional debates raging in our day centers on the subject of abortion. Some see it as simply the choice of a woman over what happens to her body; some see it as far more sinister. Today, we look at the ancient practice of child sacrifice to see if there is any parallel to the modern practice. This conversation is vital because it involves the doctrines of both God and man.I. In Ezra 4, the people of God stop building the temple. What caused them to stop? Discouragement and distraction. In our lives, discouragement and distraction often cause us to stop building our lives with God, to stop our progress of growth and maturity. How do we combat discouragement and distraction? This week, we explore the power of having a sacred posture.

In this week's sermon, we take a short detour from Ezra to the book of Haggai to hear a convicting word about what happens when we stop rebuilding the “House of the Lord” in our lives. Haggai 1:3 says “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” Guest speaker Dan Fang encourages us to examine and self-reflect on what our “paneled houses” may be, as well as re-dedicate ourselves to building God's house in our lives.
