MAKE THEM SUFFER's ALEX READE On APRA Nomination, Breaking Boundaries, And A True Blue Aussie Tour

Interview by Angela CroudaceAustralian metalcore powerhouse Make Them Suffer are riding high in 2025 with a prestigious APRA Music Award nomination—an accolade that has vocalist and keyboardist Alex Reade feeling a well-earned sense of pride.“When we found out about the nomination, we weren't sure what it meant at first,” Reade admits. “But once we did our research, we realized—this is something we've worked so hard for. After everything we've put into the last three years, the grind of touring, this kind of recognition really matters.”The category for Most Performed Heard Rock/Heavy Metal Work was taken out in 2024's inaugural year by Parkway Drive and is something that Reade sees as a major step forward for the genre and its diverse artists. “It's so good to see not only heavy music being acknowledged, but also the visibility of women within it,” she says. “We're reaching a point where it's just normal. It's respected.”Reade joined Make Them Suffer ahead of their 2023 self-titled album, which she calls a “dipping of toes” into the band's true potential. “This album showed what the band is capable of, but I don't think people have seen anything yet,” she says. “The next chapter is going to be something really special.”The band's evolution—from COVID-era uncertainty to global tours and packed venues—has forged a new, galvanized identity. “There was a time when no one knew if we'd keep going,” Reade reflects. “But the response to Doomswitch and this new chapter has been massive. We're solid now. We're a team.”With an 18-date regional Australian tour lined up, including stops in less-frequented towns like Narre Warren and Forster, the band is embracing their roots. “This tour feels like a celebration of Australia,” Reade says. “We're bringing the full heavy energy but in a way that's more intimate, more connected.”With Justice for the Damned and The Gloom in the Corner joining the run, Reade promises one thing: “It's gonna be heavy. And it's gonna be fun.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersThe 2025 APRA MUSIC AWARDS are almost upon us, and after the overwhelming success of last year's debut category Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Work, anticipation is once again high amongst Australia's fastest-growing music genre as five more Aussie acts are in the running to be recognized globally for their achievements. Not that winning awards are the be-all, end-all for band's, but a bit of reward for effort is never a bad thing! This year sees Make Them Suffer, Northlane, Polaris, Windwaker and Speed nominated for the gong, with Windwaker's frontman Liam Guinane joining HEAVY earlier today to talk all things APRA and beyond."Honestly, it was quite unexpected given the calibre of bands that we're up against," Guinane said of Windwaker's nomination. "So I'm quite honoured to be considered next to some of these pillars of heavy music currently in Australia. It feels terrific to be put amongst those names and to be a part of it. I'm really looking forward to the night. It seems like it's going to be a fantastic evening and, yeah, very much uncharted territory for us being recognised like this (laughs)."In the full interview, Liam discussed the band's recent nomination for the APRA Music Awards, expressing both surprise and honour at being recognized alongside established Australian bands. The conversation included thoughts on the competitive landscape among Australian bands, with Liam emphasizing Windwaker's distinct sound and broader appeal. He also considered whether to prepare a speech, leaning towards improvisation but recognizing the need for some preparation. We spoke about some of the lighter sides of the awards, including the chance of a heavier band performing on the night, last year's winners Parkway Drive and getting fashion tips from Winston McCall, Windwaker's latest tour and how the new songs were received live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersIt's that time of the year again where Australia's finest musical talents assemble to reward their achievements over the last 12 months and beyond. The APRA Music Awards celebrate excellence in contemporary music, honouring songwriters and publishers who have achieved artistic excellence and outstanding success in their fields. To be held in Melbourne on April 30 this year, the APRA Music Awards have, for the second year in a row, acknowledged the growing presence of harder edged and heavy music by presenting the Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal category - won in its inaugural year by Parkway Drive.More than just a token nod in the direction of change, APRA has fully embraced music of these genres, recognizing and paying due respect to a style of music that has grown to such levels it is now impossible to ignore. The nominees for Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal in 2025 are Make Them Suffer, Polaris, Windwaker, Speed and Northlane, with HEAVY jumping at the chance to speak with Northlane frontman Marcus Bridge to find out how confident the band is going into the awards."It's exciting stuff, and it's with a bunch of other great bands," he smiled. "It's cool to be with so many bands that we've all grown up with and built our careers with at the same time and see the new generation taking that spot."We ask Marcus how important recognition such as this is for the future of Australian hard rock/heavy music."I think it just shows over the last five to ten years how heavy music has grown worldwide," he mused, "and especially the Australian bands. Whenever we're touring overseas, I feel like Australian heavy bands are the talk of the town, especially in the US and Europe. Just because there are so many awesome bands working so hard to get over there. And I think in the end, it's kind of putting Australian music on the map in a different way around the world. So it's really, really cool to see that it's being recognized in that way. I'm just hoping that it keeps on growing and keeps on getting bigger."In the full interview, Marcus discussed Northlane's nomination for the 2025 APRA Awards, expressing excitement about the recognition alongside other Australian bands and the support from APRA. Marcus reflected on the growing international attention for Australian heavy music and the importance of regional tours, emphasizing the unique energy of smaller venue audiences compared to city crowds. He also addressed the band's musical evolution, with Marcus outlining their approach for the next album, which will build on the last EP's while allowing for experimentation with various styles. We took a look at the lighter side of the APRA Awards, including the potentially crippling effect Frenzal Rhomb had on such bands being invited to perform live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The new album is here. It's a true testament to the band they've become, and we're thrilled to welcome back frontman Sean Harmanis of Make Them Suffer. Our last conversation was during their North American tour in the spring; since then, they've taken on an intense schedule, from major summer festivals to headlining across Australia. Now, they're rounding off a landmark year with the release of their self-titled fifth studio album, Make Them Suffer, and it may well be their finest yet.The pandemic put MTS at a breaking point, with this album almost not seeing the light of day. But the arrival of Alex Reade as the newest band member brought a fresh spark, igniting immediate chemistry that breathed new life into the group. The renewed energy among these five musicians has forged a rare bond, creating music with a maturity and cohesion few can rival.Throughout our discussion, Sean reflects on the journey and what has led the band to this pivotal moment. Ever humble, he's quick to express gratitude for the opportunities the band has had, while also celebrating their hard-won successes. Make Them Suffer's sound has evolved naturally, reaching new depths that Sean breaks down as we explore the trajectory leading to Make Them Suffer.2024 is shaping up to be MTS's year, and while it may seem like we've said it before, this band truly is only just beginning this exciting new chapter. West Australian metal outfit Make Them Suffer found themselves at an important crossroads just a short couple of years ago. With the turmoil of COVID still echoing in the rear vision mirror, Make Them Suffer found themselves beset by more line-up changes, which, coupled with a high level of external expectations, cast an increasingly large, dark shadow over the possibility of a productive future.Tracing its origins back to 2022, the new Make Them Suffer era was first set in motion by the announcement of Sean Harmanis (vocals), Nick McLernon (guitar), Jaya Jeffery (bass), and Jordan Mather (drums) releasing the blistering single Doomswitch as well as joining forces with Alex Reade taking up the role of backing vocalist and keyboardist, aka Make Them Suffer's trademark Fifth Member. Following on with singles Epitaph and Ghost Of Me, Make Them Suffer ultimately crafted their forthcoming self-titled new album in between an exceedingly busy international touring schedule as live music opportunities continued to rise in the post-pandemic landscape.Harnessing that confusion and uncertainty, Make Them Suffer have fearlessly stepped into new creative terrain that embraces yet boldly expands upon the group's foundational symphonic, progressive, and blackened textures. With the new album less than two weeks from being unleashed on the sonic landscape, HEAVY caught up with guitarist Nick McLernon to dig deeper."I'm gonna be honest with you, I don't feel a thing," he replied solemnly when asked about the looming release date. "The last two years we've been through many ups and downs - a lot of downs. We've struggled through adversity, rather, many adversities to be here, so I think that's desensitised us - or at least me. I'm not sure if I'm speaking on behalf of the rest of the band, but I certainly feel desensitised to everything with the lead-up to the record coming out. I might feel different… I'm sure it's all going to catch up to me when the record actually does come out, but right now… this is the first time in two years I have actually gotten to relax and not think about music. We've been touring and writing since Doomswitch was released and since Alex joined the band. So this is the first time I actually don't have to think about music."In the full interview, Nick discusses why now is the right time to name an album after the band, the sound of the album and what the band were going for musically, the singles released and how they represent the full album, Alex's addition for the album and what she brought to the creative process, self-producing the album and the pros and cons of keeping it in house, balancing genres successfully, future plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Angela CroudaceHEAVY sat down with PK, the passionate frontman of Japanese heavy metal band Prompts. His journey from Korea to Japan, fueled by a love for metal, has become an inspiring tale of perseverance and friendship.PK shared his experiences growing up in Korea, where the overwhelming popularity of K-Pop shaped the music landscape. “Most kids were into K-Pop, but my small group of friends were metalheads. We would gather and play Metallica's Master of Puppets over and over,” he recalled with a smile. This early passion for heavy metal, however, came with its challenges. “There's very little money and promotion for artists in Korea outside of the pop genre,” he lamented. Many high school bands followed the K-Pop trend, but PK and his friends remained committed to their metal roots.Determined to break into the metal scene, PK made the pivotal decision to move to Japan. He spoke about the stark contrast between the Korean live music scene and Japan's vibrant touring and promotional ecosystem. “In Korea, it's tough to get noticed unless you're in the pop realm. In Japan, the opportunities are endless,” he explained. His aspirations extended beyond Japan; he even considered moving to Australia to kickstart his career, admiring the local metal scene and citing bands like Parkway Drive, Make Them Suffer, and Void of Vision as major influences.PK's journey took a significant turn when he connected with Kaito Nagai of Paledusk, who noticed his vocal cover of their song on X (formerly Twitter). “Kaito always inspired me and really helped me on my journey,” PK said. “He showed me how to navigate the Japanese metal scene and invited me to tour with them and Cold Rain. Thanks to my friends, everything with Grayscale Records went so smoothly.” Joining Grayscale Records marked a major milestone for Prompts, solidifying their place in the industry.Despite his metal roots, PK confessed to a surprising guilty pleasure: K-Pop. “I hated it when K-Pop took over the Korean music scene, but after listening to BTS and Blackpink, I realized maybe I was wrong. How can we not respect them? They do so much training before they even debut; it's the same passion for music,” he admitted, reflecting on the dedication shared across genres. With half of Prompts being Korean and currently living in Japan, PK expressed a strong desire to make an impact back home. “I'm proud I'm Korean because there are not many Koreans in the metal scene. There's no hardcore heroes right now, so maybe I can't be the first one, but I want to bring Prompts to Korea one day and do something for the Korean metal scene.”As we wrapped up the interview and talk turned to Prompt's current Australian tour with Diamond Construct, PK's excitement was palpable. “We're really happy to join another Australian tour after our fantastic trip in January. I can feel your guys' energy. I dreamed about that type of energy for years,” he said. With Prompts, he's not just chasing dreams; he's forging a path for others in the metal scene, creating a bridge between cultures and inspiring the next generation of musicians.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

After selling out their own headlining tour of Australia just last year, British metalcore giants Bury Tomorrow have wasted little time in delivering on their promise to return. They will arrive back to these shores in August and September, playing alongside Spite, Bloom and Make Them Suffer as part of the Suffer Forever Australian Tour. Their last tour was to promote then new album The Seventh Sun, but, according to rhythm guitarist Ed Hartwell, this time Bury Tomorrow are coming just for the fun of it."It's funny, because I think we got offered this tour when we were in Australia last year," he smiled. "So we were out there doing that tour when the offer came through - of course it didn't get announced until much later - but we're just happy to be back. It's a really good time. I'm not a huge fan of flying, so it's quite a big thing for me to go so far away from home. Last year was the first time I have been to Australia, and it was such a good time. It's definitely worth any anxiety I get from flying over there (laughs)."Given the fear of flying is a major detraction, we press Ed on what it is about Australia that makes it so appealing."It's just the people; the environment… there's just so much novelty about it that's really beautiful," he offered. "Driving through… we had some very, very long drives on that tour - like 10, 12 hour drives - but because you are just driving through, at no point does it really feel like England. It has that novelty of this is really cool. We're in Australia! When you see a kangaroo on the side of the road, you're just, like, wow (laughs)."In the full interview, Ed talks more about the tour and what to expect, the strength of The Seventh Sun to allow two tours on one album cycle, the new sound for Bury Tomorrow on that album and if it will continue over future releases, how he is settling into the band after joining in 2021, how much he knows about the other bands on the line-up and where Bury Tomorrow fit in, what to expect from their live show, writing set lists for different countries and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Released April 10th, ‘Heresy' is the new single from Sydney metalcore quartet Harroway. The track takes a deep dive into the mind of vocalist Matt Banks. It sees Harroway explore a desire to escape from emotional pain and suffering. Banks pleads for relief, projecting undertones of existential questioning and a longing for peace or oblivion. Pulling from his experience living with Hemochromatosis, a disorder where the body creates excessive amounts of iron and becomes toxic, the single comes with a swirling sense of self resignation as Banks grapples with existential crisis, mental anguish, and the search for a meaning. The scathing single is produced, mixed and mastered by Mark Williamson at Keywork Audio (Inertia, Closure, Revoid) with a chaotic and claustrophobic music video produced and directed by Lexi Markovic. Harroway offer vulnerable truths through their music and seek to connect with their audiences in a live capacity. The band have been on a national tour supporting metalcore legends Sienna Skies and No Home throughout April and May. Beginning their journey in 2019, Harroway have jumped from strength to strength since their inception. Unveiling their debut EP 'I Don't Want to Be Here Anymore' last year, the release marked a milestone in the bands career, seeing them sell out their Australian EP launch headliner shortly after it dropped. The band has since stepped up to support renowned international acts We Came as Romans (USA), Invent Animate (USA), and Crossfaith (JAP) as well as Australian heavyweights Make Them Suffer, Ocean Sleeper, Windwaker and more. Harroway has grown to boast over a million digital streams, and counting, across various platforms. They sit close to 9,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with their music collecting adds to editorial playlists All New Metal, Homegrown + Heavy and New Blood. They've been heard on the triple j airwaves and community radio stations across the nation and were coined: “One of the best new talents in the scene” by Wall of Sound in 2022. Harroway remain steadfast in their belief in their craft and seek to share their passion with audiences from all corners. Heresy is available and streaming now on all platforms. We spoke to vocalist Matt Banks about the new single, delving into the history of Harroway and what has got them to this point.
