In this titanic, tumultuous episode of Terminus, we have the rare pleasure of covering two bands that complement each other perfectly. First up, it's jazzy brutal death from Germany. Second, it's German brutal-deathy jazz, or…. something? Both bands feature legendary German drummer Lille Gruber, on legendary German drums. Both records are insanely good. We had a lot of fun with this one, and we hope you do, too. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:03:31 - Defeated Sanity - Chronicles of Lunacy (Season of Mist) 0:44:51 - Interlude - Repudilation - “Decimation,” fr. DEFEATED SANITY a également sorti son septième album Chronicles Of Lunacy chez Season Of Mist.

In episode 193 of Heavy Metal Philosophy, Jon Barbas interviews Defeated Sanity about their upcoming album, Chronicles of Lunacy. During the conversation which was recorded in August, the topics we discussed made me question my thoughts on more recent episodes of the podcast. It might seem like I'm reinforcing those points but this podcast was actually recorded before I thought of those ideas. Plus, you have to hear this music. Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we are talking about the fourth full-length studio album by the New York brutal tech death band Malignancy titled ...Discontinued, which was dropped on June 14th through Willowtip Records. This is the band's first album in 12 years so this certainly calls for celebration. For a band that has been around since 1992, you would think that they would have much more albums in their discography but, I guess some bands like to really take the time with their craft. Before diving into this new record track by track, I'm going point out a major similarity that I've always noticed about this band. Particularly with the vocalist Danny Nelson having a nearly identical sounding voice to Ross Dolan from Immolation. I had often wondered if Malignancy was a side project band, which would make a lot of sense seeing as how both bands are from Yonkers! The answer is no, Danny and Ross are two different people. However, Danny had done vocals for Mortal Decay's 2013 album The Blueprint For Blood Spatter. When I looked up the names of the band members, I had to do a double take when I saw the bass player. At first I thought it said Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse, but nope, the new bass player is Alex Weber. Haha, not Webster. Coincidentally enough, guess where Cannibal Corpse originally started. You guessed it, New York. Except they formed in Buffalo. According to Metal-Archives, Alex Weber has played live for Defeated Sanity and Obscura. Guitarist Ron Kachnic has also been in Pyrexia, Demolition Hammer and Mortician! Mike Heller has been the drummer for multiple bands including System Divide which is Sven from Aborted's side project band. Despite not advertising as such, Malignancy IS a super group. Kicking things off we have the first track titled "Existential Dread". As you listen to this album, you can feel Danny's lips press against the microphone as he delivers his powerful vocals. You can tell he definitely uses his diaphragm to produce such a monstrous tone. Watch a few live videos of them and you can witness for yourself Danny's commanding stage presence too. "Purity of Purpose" was the first single released for this album about 2 months beforehand. I remembered as soon as I heard it, I immediately looked up the full-length release date and album title just to add it to my list. Judging from that track alone, I knew I had to review it. The second single "Biological Absurdity" was uploaded a month later and it of course blew me away. Both of these songs were aired on YouTube as official tracks but we haven't been treated to a music video yet. I have found myself jamming this album front to back since its release a little over a week ago and I gotta say, I'm impressed! I mean, Malignancy never disappoints. This album is absolutely killer and one of the finest examples of your standard death metal. Bad ass death metal albums without an overly unique pizazz quality about them are still more than capable of getting a good rating out of me. This is definitely one of the better straight forward death metal albums I've heard in 2024 so far. With that being said, I'm feeling a nice 8/10 rating. Malignancy has been kickin around in the underground scene since I was a 1-year-old. They've gone through a few line-up changes here and there but have held strong as a band for the past three decades. Their popularity may not be up on the same level as many other bands but they deserve a lot of credit, respect and most of all support. You can buy their merch ... at pretty much any online metal merch outlet. The most obvious choice would be bandcamp, but they also have merch at primitiverecordings.com, hellsheadbangers.com and indiemerch.com. Of course, if you get lucky enough to see them live; they definitely have a merch table and I hear that they are usually at their stand before and after a show. So don't be shy, go say hi and if nothing else, throw them a few bucks in their tip jar.

Coleman is back with the usual fare of harsh n' heavy offerings. Spotlights on live music from Bloated Pig, Defeated Sanity, Decrepit Birth, Ragana, and Maule; plus new music from Extensive Slaughter, Warkrusher, Kostnateni, and more. Mic sound is abysmal for most of the show, but the tunes still rip.

Just in time for the spookiest of seasons comes a spine-chilling installment of Terminus with the team you fear most- The Death Metal Guy and Harried Terminus Intern Hyper Shaman. As is (usually) tradition for this combo, we've got a death metal centered episode for you, but fear not: only one of the records discussed has prominent slams! First off, though, is a look at the new Daemogog record, which follows in the style of bands like Astral Tomb in its gangly, abstract take on brutal death technique and dissonant melodic motifs. First to bat is the newest record by Imprecation, stalwarts of the Texas scene, who provide yet another blast of traditional, blasphemous death metal from the early 90s. While this music is immediate and straightforward from moment to moment, it's also deceptively complex owing to elaborate song structures and a striking rhythmic performance. Imprecation rejects the conceits of nowadays "OSDM" and strikes at the heart of what made the original records of that era great. FFO Morbid Angel, Profanatica, the literal devil, etc. Concluding the proceedings is the third (!) appearance of Anal Stabwound on the show with the project's second full length record. To the shock of absolutely no one who's been paying attention, the new record is a dizzying display of technical and compositional prowess. Expanding from the jazz-infused style of later Defeated Sanity, Anal Stabwound combines the brain-melting rhythmic concepts of The Sanguinary Impetus with an emphasis on readable and even catchy songwriting. I'm still mad at Nikhil though. 0:00:00 - Intro/Daemogog - Yawning Expanse Yearning (Bent Window Records) 0:23:51 - Imprecation - In Nomine Diaboli (Dark Descent) 1:02:15 - Interlude - Resurrection - “Smell of Blood” fr. From one extreme to another! Josh Welshman of Defeated Sanity is this weeks guest.
German death metal powerhouse Defeated Sanity have announced a co-headlining tour of Australia with Brisbane death outfit Disentomb.Known for pushing the parameters of their chosen genre and experimenting in ways that some purists might consider blasphemous, Defeated Sanity are a band who live and die by their own sword. They are an enigma in the rapidly growing world of death metal and are bracing to decimate the minds and eardrums of the nation when the tour kicks off on July 7.Bass player Jacob Schmidt joined HEAVY to talk about the tour, starting with the sheer excitement of finally being able to travel outside of your home country with your music."Yes, yes, it really is exciting,” he beamed. “That's actually gonna be our first time down there too so after everything with the last two years we're just glad to be back on the road and doing it and hitting new placed."Coming in blind can be a good thing, but Schmidt admits the band have done their homework a little."Everybody from down there is telling us to expect only great things,” he expressed. “Everybody says the shows are gonna be packed and wild and people are gonna get crazy. The bar has been set high, but I'm always trying to tame my own expectations and not expect only good things to happen. I try to take things as they come BUT I do think it's going to be a good one and we've been in touch with a lot of fans and bands from Australia for many, many years. We have definitely sent a lot of merch down there so that's a sign there is definitely demand for Defeated Sanity Down Under.”In the full interview, Jacob talks about co-headlining with Disentomb, the pro's and cons of doing so, their live show and what to expect, working on your live show during COVID, the early days of the band, future plans and more.

It's a real hot swordboy summer for The Black Metal Guy as yet another old favorite returns for a new record, a friend submits a full-length demo, and two previously featured artists return again. This one's a deep cut for Terminus pros, with lots of returning features and refinements on old styles coming to a head in a varied and fun episode. Starting off is Antediluvian, returning with their first record in 8 years. An old favorite of TBMG, Antediluvian's style of extreme, sprawling, and seemingly improvisational black/death is more abstract and complex than ever before. With touches of post-industrial, jazz, and ambience filtering in, you might be inclined to think this is the sound of a band becoming "experimental" (blech,) but don't worry, there's more than enough sawing war metal riffs to go around. Next is กาฬพราย (Kanprai), previously mentioned on the show but reviewed for the first time with a Thai take on various black metal styles. The core of this music is a blend of DSBM and post-hardcore informed European styles, but with a thread of deeply textured and organic riffing ideas that expand upon basic forms in novel ways. Want something kind of like raw tapeblack but with actual musical ideas? Here you go. After our interlude, TDMG fires up with the return of Ruin, south Californian doomdeath terrorists previously featured on the show back in 2020. Ruin's music is an unchanging, grotesque block of human flesh and granite, so don't expect a dramatic change, but rather a refinement of their core style: slow, punishing death metal about serial murder and mental illness, like a goregrind 7" accidentally played on 33. Wrapping up the night is the new EP by Anal Stabwound, whose full length we featured earlier this year and we also interviewed a few months back. Sole member Nikhil does it again with arguably his greatest work to date, a categorical improvement in every way from his previous work which sets him up for absolute brutal death hegemony. We're at Defeated Sanity levels here, folks- where's he gonna go from here? 0:00 - Intro ft. In this (relatively) short but high-ABV episode of Terminus, we bring you a fresh bouquet of the new spring's finest flowers -- albums about death, meth, swords, and burning boats. Exhale the rot of last year, and breathe in the smoke on the wind. To lead off, The Death Metal Guy checks in with the captains of Danish Nautical Black Metal (DNBM), Ildskaer, whose Den rædsomste nat was one of 2020's more pleasant surprises. On this new EP, they make good use of the format -- not unleashing a full broadside like they did last year, but training their batteries to a new level. There's a lot of subtlety to explore. The Black Metal Guy follows up with a killer album-length demo from ЛЕШИЙ (or "Leshiy"), a black metal configuration of Russia's Pleskau Brethren Circle. ЛЕШИЙ play simple, direct music inspired by sounds we all know and love -- so what is it that makes them so damn good? TBMG has a few ideas, and launches into the most detailed riff analysis we've done in a while. After 90 minutes discussing noble, martial black metal, it's time to lower the tone, and TDMG has got what you need. If what you need is 37 minutes of artfully composed brutal death metal about addiction, recovery, and the rot at the heart of middle America, that is. Metharoma's Pipe Dreams is the first thing we've covered by one of TDMG's favorite nowadays BDM auteurs, Brian Forgue (Syphilic), and features Jacob Schmidt from Defeated Sanity. Finally, we close out with a new Terminus favorite -- the rumbling, primordial black/death of Poland's Upon The Altar. TBMG is proud of his find, but he hands off the wheel to TDMG, our resident expert on all things Paul Ledney. You could think of this review as a tour through UTA's armory of arcane riffs: riffs that are only one note, riffs played over and over, riffs written by the drummer, and at last, the mighty Riff Where Nothing Happens Very Specifically. 0:00:00 - Introductory bullshitting 0:11:52 - Ildskaer - Paa dækket kalder de døde (Independent) 0:43:46 - ЛЕШИЙ (Leshiy) - ПОГАНЫЕ СНЫ (Horrible Room) 1:16:25 - Interlude - Bekhira - “The Devil and The Sorcerer,” L'Elu du Mal (Aura Mystique Productions, 2005) 1:21:05 - Metharoma - Pipe Dreams (Through the Alley) (New Standard Elite) 1:56:16 - Upon the Altar - Absit Ab Ordine Luminis (Putrid Cult) 2:34:08 - Outro - Demoncy - "Joined In Darkness," fr. In this episode we talk about how he went from being a fan of Defeated Sanity to becoming their singer, their record from 2020 called The Sanguinary Impetus, and their tour with Origin in March of 2020 that was cut short as a result of the pandemic. This was a great conversation, Josh is enthusiastic and passionate about music and made a great guest.

AUGUSTS 2020 Ikmēneša Metāla Šovs METĀLKĀSTS LV #93 Šajā epizodē:
It's time for some death metal. Nothing but death metal. Ripping death metal. Crushing death metal. Brutal, technical, gut-busting death metal. And of course, the monstrously inbred, three-headed stepchild... slam. The Black Metal Guy leads off with debut full-lengths from Draghkar and Sepulchral Curse, two strikingly original takes on oldschool sounds. For Draghkar, it's 80s proto-death filtered through epic speed metal. For Sepulchral Curse, it's Stockholm death metal filtered through a thoroughly Finnish sensibility. But will The Black Metal Guy's picks pass muster with the famously picky Death Metal Guy?? In the second half of the show, the Death Metal Guy brings us to the vanguard of weird brutality, with the new one from German masters Defeated Sanity, and the return of the Hellenic slamophiles, Embryectomy. DS's The Sanguinary Impetus is their most out-there yet, leaving both your hosts' jaws on the floor. Embryectomy work at the total opposite end of the spectrum, perpetrating an almost unthinkable atrocity -- a slam record without all those pesky trem riffs and blasts. And you know when the slams are hot and heavy, The Death Metal Guy can't control himself. So strap yourself in for the latest spasm of Autism Hour... the Grand Unified Theory of Slam. 00:00 - Introductory bullshitting / gore stories / rundown of bands and labels 12:11 - Draghkar - At The Crossroads of Infinity (Unspeakable Axe - imprint of Dark Descent) 52:56 - Sepulchral Curse - Only Ashes Remain (Transcending Obscurity Records) 01:27:30 - Defeated Sanity - The Sanguinary Impetus (Willowtip Records) 01:59:35 - Embryectomy - Flamethrower Ecdysis (Morbid Generation Records) 02:20:06 - Autism Hour - The Grand Unified Theory of Slam 02:44:37 - Outro - House Of Atreus - "Oath of the Horatii," fr. That's Bruce Lee's son, who starred in - and made the ultimate sacrifice for - The Crow. CLARIFICATION: Sepulchral Curse only shares two members with Solothus - Kari Kankaanpää (vocals) and Aleksi Luukka (guitars). Both also play in Yawning Void (Finnblack death-doom) with Tommi Ilmanen (drums and vocals).
Welcome back to Episode 4 of the Under the Knife Podcast where we review all things extreme and alternative in the world of music, new and old. In this episode we will be reviewing the new albums by Emmure, Defeated Sanity, Make Them Suffer, Pyrrhon and Sharptooth. Enjoy!
The story of Chicago rockers High Spirits is kind of unique. Led by the amazing Professor Black, the outfit doesn't even really consider themselves Metal. They have their own self coined description of "high energy rock". But they actually came to the attention of the underground via Hell's Headbangers (??!!). So if they come recommended by the good folks at HH, then we've got to check 'em out. Bonus that their new record "Hard To Stop" courtesy of High Roller Records just dropped as well. So we sat down with the Good Professor to discuss the new album, working with Hell's, and his incredible three album and two EP 2018. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discuss combating covid and Tom Araya...in his PJs (??!! again). Musically we crank the new HS, some Professor Black solo, label mates EVO (Warfare), plus new tunage from Power Trip, Defeated Sanity, Solanum, Inhumed and introduce Canadian fvckers Turbo in our "Indie Spotlight"! S1E16: The Chimpanzee - Josh Welshman (Defeated Sanity) We're all fed up with stale album concepts. Is it time for something new? Whats in a name? With their chosen monicker, no doubt young death metal guns Creeping Death have received more than their share of detractors. But to write this outfit off as mere clones would definitely be wrong. In a short period of these Texas bashers are really starting to come into their own. Creeping Death made waves last year with their debut full lengther "Wretched Illusions". On eOne, no less! So now is an awesome time to get axeman Trey Pemberton on the horn. We discussed signing on to a major and dealing with criticisms regarding it and their monicker. And of course dealing with covid as a band. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we discussed the latest ticketmaster skullduggery. And of course, crank some awesome tunes from CD, Blood Red Throne, Benighted, Defeated Sanity, Judiciary, Errant, Foes, Funeral Leech, Crown of Thorns, and introduce Canadian metallers Immolith in our "Indie Spotlight". [Update, 7pm Eastern time on Sunday, March 8th, 2020: I've re-upped the episode to fix some audio issues that were present in the first version, so if you downloaded the file previously, please refresh it if you haven't yet listened! -HS] For the first episode of Heavy Metal Bebop's second season, we have two guests, presented one after the other. They are Lille Gruber, drummer, co-founder and principal songwriter for the German death-metal band Defeated Sanity, and Jacob Schmidt, the band's bassist and co-songwriter since 2005. If you've listened to prior episodes of this show and/or read Heavy Metal Bebop interviews online, you've probably run across Defeated Sanity's name. That's because, like Meshuggah and Gorguts before them, during the past 15 years or so, Defeated Sanity have gradually evolved into an institution of forward-thinking metal, a band that open-minded musicians both inside and outside the genre look to as leaders in their field. Their work draws on the brutality of genre forefathers like Cannibal Corpse as well as the jazz savvy of bands like Cynic, creating a breathakingly diverse sound that wholly rejects the pristine veneer of modern extreme metal. In 2016, they released Disposal of the Dead / Dharmata, a "self-split" album that isolated the two different sides of their work. Recently Lille and Jacob were in New York putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album at Menegroth, the Queens studio owned and operated by my friend Colin Marston. I dropped by and sat down with Lille and Jacob for sequential conversations touching on how Lille started the band with his fusion-loving father, Wolfgang Teske; why Lille considers the Mahavishnu Orchestra to be his Black Sabbath; why he'd like to combine Miles Davis' Tutu with death metal slams; Jacob's take on the difficulties of being a truly progressive band in an often conservative genre; and much more. If you're listening to this episode in March 2020, Defeated Sanity are about to head out on a big U.S. tour with Origin, so check their Facebook page for all the details.

Kate Gentile is a drummer-composer with a highly advanced and personal musical language. Trained in jazz from high school on, she began listening to metal in recent years and has since gravitated toward some of the more intense, outlandish areas of the underground. In this episode, she discusses a slew of her favorite death-metal bands — including Cenotaph, Defeated Sanity and Malignancy — the process of incorporating double-kick drumming into her jazz work, why Tony Williams' playing was a revelation early on, what she admires about metal fandom and much more. To learn more about Kate and her work, go to kategentile.com.
In the hole this week, we discuss the international phenomenon known as "Ping Death Metal" with our guest Paulo Paguntalan, a man who truly knows his way around underground extreme music. Get your notebooks and snare drums out for this one.
Twitter @chrissarda Instagram @chrissarda Second podcast previewing and giving first impressions of all the relevant metal releases that came out on 8.17.18 Lots of great stuff this week. We talk about bands like Black Tusk, Primitive Man, Defeated Sanity, Cemetary Urn. Discussion about the amount of death metal releases that are good but don't differentiate themselves in quality from week to week. Many of the bands that released music this week I happened to see live, so that gave me different impressions of many of the releases.
You may be shocked to learn that this episode being late isn't actually my fault. Anyway, regular co-host Cody joins me this week to discuss literally nothing. Memes are real: Weezer covered Toto's "Africa". New stuff from Chthe'ilist, Defeated Sanity, Obscura and Hoth. Then we do a cool people section on Cody starting to play bass (plus some useless tips for me about learning bass), Hereditary, Hollow Knight, God of War (extended spoilery discussion) and Ocean's 8. Enjoy!

In case the title wasn't clue enough, this week we have Max Phelps of Exist, Defeated Sanity and Death to All (also ex-Cynic) as our guest! We discuss his creative process, touring with Gorguts, and of course, the upcoming Exist album So True, So Bound, which comes out this week! We also discuss new music from Origin, Bloodshot Dawn, Rings of Saturn, Vintersorg and more! We also discuss Fredrik Thordendal's hiatus(?) from Meshuggah and Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetry replacing him. Finally, we talk about how Spotify artist payments have been decreasing despite their financial growth. Enjoy!
Josh and Lille of Defeated Sanity slam their way onto the podcast. The Dr. brings over 1987's Dolls for review.
Yeah, this week's dank number fact is pretty obvious. Also, finally we introduce "Bullshit Philosophy Corner" as an official segment! Oh, we also talk about metal. Stuff like Morbid Angel, The HAARP Machine, From First To Last (and Skrillex), Oddland, Opeth, Jinjer, Defeated Sanity, Carnifex, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Equipoise, Alcest and Cortexiphan. Also some dumb top 50 list. Then we do two topics, namely bands that "you had to be there/then to get", and how fans fixate on members of bands who have passed away. Enjoy!
Welcome back to the most disturbing podcast available on KISW.com. This week we discuss Ian losing his wallet, Kevin almost spoils the new Captain American movie, Ian's band gets signed and he also stops drinking liquor (!?!) while Ryan has been working himself to the bone. In metal news, we give some post-Lemmy Motorhead updates, we discuss Joey Jordinson's new band, Rotting Christ is coming to town, new Electric Wizard is in the works, Dying Fetus spread the ashes of a huge fan of theirs amongst a mosh pit, there's new music by Defeated Sanity, Weekend Nachos and Anal Blasphemy + Gojira is coming back to Seattle ! And finally, we end with a super messed up round of Brutal Poetry Too Hot for Radio and an interview + song premier by an awesome NW death metal band Devilation. Horns up!
Maiden rocked it last week at the Tacoma Dome, and we discuss their new beer! Despised Icon, Gojira, Nails, and Defeated Sanity all have incredibly heavy sounding jammers on the way. Taste them here. We discuss how it sucks when bands print crappy quality merch, Chris Barnes and Six Feet Under returning with a new edition of Graveyard Classics, and Lamb of God goes GOLD with Ashes of The Wake!
