Interview by Angela CroudaceNick Thomas, frontman of The Spill Canvas, is bringing something special to Australian fans this year — a long-awaited celebration of their beloved 2005 album One Fell Swoop. Speaking ahead of their debut tour Down Under, Thomas shared his excitement and gratitude for being able to continue making music nearly two decades on.“To get to do this for even a year, let alone over 20, is a marvel in and of itself,” he said. “We've never been to Australia, so to come over now and play this album in full feels really special.”The tour, a co-headlining run with fellow emo pioneers The Juliana Theory, marks a major milestone for both bands. Thomas credits Emotion Is Dead as a formative influence in his own musical journey, and says he's thrilled to share the stage with artists he once idolised. “I grew up listening to them — now we're friends. It's wild.”The Spill Canvas will perform One Fell Swoop front to back, staying true to its original sequencing. “We spent a lot of time curating the track list as a journey,” Thomas explained. “It just feels right to honour it that way.” After the final track, Self-Conclusion, Thomas plans to segue into a few more fan favourites to round out the night.Despite never visiting Australia before, Thomas is embracing the adventure with enthusiasm. “I'd love to see the Opera House, meet people, maybe spot a kangaroo. I'm also — embarrassingly — a big fan of Below Deck Down Under. Captain Jason is my hero!”Reflecting on the recording of One Fell Swoop, Thomas recalled humble beginnings at Black Lodge Studios in Kansas with producer Ed Rose. “It was our first real studio experience. I remember Ryan Pope from The Get Up Kids giving me a shoulder rub while I was recording guitar. I tried to play it cool, but I was freaking out.”Over the years, The Spill Canvas has toured with major acts like the Goo Goo Dolls and OneRepublic. Thomas fondly recalled an evening where Ryan Tedder listened to his demos and gave thoughtful feedback. “Moments like that are unforgettable. It's what makes this lifestyle feel like a shared journey.”After all these years, Thomas remains a passionate music fan, recently inspired by artists like Medium Build and Bilmuri (not the actor). “Always be a fan,” he said. “That's what keeps it exciting.”Check out the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Angela CroudaceHeavy metal legend Ross The Boss is set to electrify Australia next week, and he couldn't be more excited. Reflecting on his previous visit, Ross recalls the overwhelming love he received from Aussie fans. "The reaction nerfed me," he laughed. "The intensity, especially in Melbourne, was unbelievable."Ross, a founding member of Manowar, spoke passionately about the creation of Sign of the Hammer, revealing that the band often recorded more tracks than needed, seizing every opportunity in the studio. A highlight was recording at Richard Branson's famed Manor Studio — a surreal experience that included sleeping in rooms once occupied by historical figures like William the Conqueror. This upcoming tour features what Ross calls the best version of the RTB band yet, boasting powerhouse musicians like Dirk Schlächter (Gamma Ray) and drummer Sean Elg. “We're coming to melt faces,” Ross promises, highlighting the group's precision and raw power. When asked about his time in Manowar, Ross candidly shared that he wished he'd been firmer with his bandmate Joey DeMaio. "Sometimes I should've put my foot down more," he admitted. Despite past challenges, he now channels his passion purely through his guitar, still rooted in the soulful blues influences of B.B. King and Albert King.Ross also touched on the emotional impact his music has had. "People tell me it saved their lives," he said, visibly moved. "It's an honour I don't take lightly."As Ross prepares to unleash a storm of classic anthems down under, he leaves fans with one promise: “We'll give you 150%. When the final note rings out, we want you to feel it in your soul — and want us back.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The band's journey has been anything but easy, but with their latest single, The Current, they have come out stronger and more determined than ever.Chas spoke candidly about the surreal feeling of being back with the band after battling through personal struggles. "It's just a total blur," he admits. "It's happened so fast, and I can barely believe it, but I'm stoked." The band's resilience is evident, and with new music released and tours lined up, Chas and his bandmates are more energized than ever. He also mentioned that getting back into the groove of performing has been an incredibly rewarding experience. "The shows so far have been insane," he says. "They feel so much better now, maybe it's just because I'm back, but it's like nothing else."Looking ahead, Justice For The Damned is gearing up for their headline Australian tour this March, covering major cities as well as more regional areas. "It's going to be wild, especially the regional tour," Chas reveals. "Some of these places are so off the map for us, but we want to bring the energy to every corner of Australia." For Chas, this tour is especially significant because it marks his return to the stage in his home country after a long absence. As for the music, the band's upcoming album promises to be an exciting blend of new sounds, with Chas describing the new material as more groovy and spacious compared to previous releases. He's especially excited about the upcoming regional shows, which he sees as a way of returning to the roots of their fan base. "We're just excited to be bringing our music to places we've never been before," he says. "It's the most fun you can have, playing to passionate people who might not always get the big shows coming through."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Angela CroudaceBarry Johnson, vocalist and guitarist from Joyce Manor, sat down with HEAVY for a conversation about the band's upcoming Australian tour with The Wonder Years, their creative process, and life on the road. The Californian punk rockers are gearing up for a return to Australia, a place they've always enjoyed performing and connecting with passionate fans. With a long-standing relationship with the country, Barry shared his excitement about the tour and reflected on the band's journey. When asked what he was most excited about for this round of shows, Barry's enthusiasm was evident. "I'm excited to be back in Australia. It's been a while, and I love it there. The crowds are great, and the people are really easy to talk to," he said. He also highlighted the similarities between California and Australia, particularly the laid-back vibe that makes him feel at home. "Being from California, I feel like Australia is a sweet spot. It's got the surfer culture, but the humour aligns with English humour, which is something I can really relate to."Barry's memories of past shows in Australia are fond ones, though he admitted that some moments tend to blur together. However, one standout memory remains a show at The Gasometer in Melbourne, which he described as one of the best they've ever played. "That show was definitely one of my favourites. It was such an amazing night, and it's always stuck with me," he shared. Even after all these years, that performance holds a special place for Barry, ranking among the top shows of his career. The conversation then shifted to the creative side of Joyce Manor. Barry reflected on the making of Last You Heard of Me, from their 2016 album Cody, a track that went through numerous revisions before it came together. "It was one of those songs that we worked on for so long, making small adjustments until it finally clicked," Barry explained. The process was challenging, but the outcome was something the band is incredibly proud of. "It's hard to imagine it any other way now. All the hard work paid off, and I'm really proud of how it turned out," he added. In terms of songwriting, Joyce Manor's process has evolved over the years. Initially, Barry wrote nearly everything for the band, but as time went on, it became more collaborative. "On Cody, it was myself, Chase, and our producer Rob Schnapf working together. It's really become a group effort," Barry explained. The band's dynamic allows them to balance creativity, ensuring that no one voice dominates while still pushing each other to create their best work.As for Barry's personal musical tastes, he admitted that while his preferences have evolved slightly over time, they remain grounded in the pop-punk and indie realms. Bands like Weezer, The Gin Blossoms, and The Smiths continue to inspire him. "I like a mix of '90s pop-punk, power pop, and '60s music. I've always loved a good song with strong melodies," he said. His love for the craft of songwriting shines through, and it's clear that melody and structure remain at the heart of his musical identity. When asked about the band's daily routine on tour, Barry joked about how annoying they can be. "We speak our own weird language, and it's a bit insufferable at times," he laughed. Despite the inside jokes and constant banter, Barry explained that the hardest part of touring is finding time for himself. "Being around people constantly can be tough. I need a little alone time, but it's hard to get that on tour," he shared, offering a glimpse into the reality of life on the road.Despite the challenges, touring remains one of the most exciting parts of being in Joyce Manor. When asked whether the band still parties on tour, Barry was quick to respond. "Oh, we definitely party. It's one of the best parts, but it can make it hard to keep up the energy for the long haul," he admitted. Still, he's not planning to slow down anytime soon. "I'm going to milk it for all it's worth," he laughed. Finally, when asked about new music, Barry confirmed that the band is working on a new record, though there's no release date just yet. "We're about halfway through writing and recording it. It's coming along slowly, but we're making sure it lives up to the standards we've set for ourselves," he teased. As Joyce Manor gets ready to hit the road with The Wonder Years in Australia, fans can look forward to more unforgettable shows, new music on the horizon, and a band that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. Daniel SeidmanComposer & Co-LyricistDr. Daniel Seidman is a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in New York City. Dan started playing in a band at the age of 12 at the Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village. At the age of 15, he toured the U.S. and Canada playing Hammond organ for Chubby Checker. He completed a year as a composition major at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1972-1973, and a B.A. in History from SUNY Binghamton. He received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1988, and subsequently joined the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) where he taught, practiced psychology, and did research for 30 years. He retired from Columbia in June of 2018. Fifth Avenue the musical originally grew out of Dan's combined interest in jazz and history. Discussions with a history professor Albert Fried about the immigrant experiences of the Irish, Jews, Italians and in more contemporary times, Blacks, Hispanics and the Chinese provided insight into the “dark side” of the American dream and its “underworld culture”. This is the story Fried tells in his book “The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America” (Columbia University Press). After college, Dan began composing the music for "Fifth Avenue" while employed by the Shubert Organization in New York City. He met Susan Crawford, who wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for Fifth Avenue, in 1979. They were married in 1984 and are now the proud parents of two grown sons. Susan CrawfordBook Writer and Co-LyricistMy theater life began at 13 in my hometown's Shakespeare Festival. It evolved into much acting from then into my 30's. It soon overlapped with an interest in playwriting, and I finished my first play at 24. Eventually writing overcame acting for me. For that I studied with Arthur Kopit and John Guare; lyric writing at the ASCAP workshop, and with Sheila Davis, and Dorothy Fields. Around that time I co-developed the continuity for Ned Sherrin for “Only In America” songs by Leiber and Stoller. It ran at the Roundhouse in London, and was a distant antecedent to what became “Smoky Joe's Cafe.” “Dollars to Doughnuts, a Comedy for the 99%” was my master's thesis in the CCNY Graduate Writing Program where I studied with Arthur Kopit. It was a finalist in the O'Neill Playwriting Conference the year it was finished (under the title "Lotto"). For the summer 2022 season, it was selected by Theatre for the New City's “Dream Up” Festival where it was workshopped and is now being submitted for production. My one-act "Place Settings" was selected for the Chain Theatre's 2023 Winter One-Act Festival, and is also available for production.R.K. Rumors have begun to circulate that Drake may cancel the remainder of his Australian tour. This speculation is fueled by reports that his private jet and stage equipment are leaving the country early. While official sources haven't confirmed anything, the timing raises questions, especially given a week-long break before his next performance. Some fans noticed a sudden lack of ticket availability, despite ample tickets appearing to have been available just days prior. Drake's Australian tour has already been notable for other reasons, including local controversies and the backdrop of an ongoing feud with another rapper. Miss America and nuclear engineer Grace Stanke will be travelling around Australia with a host of other nuclear experts as a part of the National Nuclear Tour. The tour is hoping to improve the public perception around nuclear science. Grace Stanke told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "I think nuclear energy and nuclear science as a whole is seen as some weird, unknown science that you have to spend 20 years in school to even so much as break into the industry, but that's not the case." "Nuclear science is all around us, it's in our homes. If you like bananas, you're actually ingesting some radiation, smoke detectors use some nuclear technology." "All of these things that are part of our daily lives, so imagine how much more good nuclear science could do if we fully embrace this technology."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The run of shows - that extends through Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth - will feature very special guests Holding Absence, the band British rock bible Kerrang! labelled as British rock's “new leading light”.YOU ME AT SIX are one of the most beloved British rock bands of all time, having delivered multiple number 1 albums, dominating charts, racking up hundreds of millions of streams, selling out arenas and headlining festivals; and along the way crafting some of the catchiest pop-rock anthems of their generation. Bite My Tongue, Take on the World, Underdog, Beautiful Way, Room to Breathe… the list of classics seems almost endless. The band's revival of infectious and spirited pop-rock earned them a mass of fans worldwide, seeing them sell out show after show across the globe.Choosing to bring such a storied 20-year career to an end cannot be easy. And everyone feels like that. We've looked at the setlists and gone, ‘Cool – those five can stay, the rest is going to be stuff we haven't done for years. We want to have 50 songs ready to go so that each night we can constantly mix it up and make it special.”“When we started YMAS we were kids. We only ever wanted to travel and to experience life as a group of friends. We feel like on the eve of our 20th anniversary as a band, now is a good time to call time. “We're in a fortunate position where our fans still want to see us live and come celebrate the life of this band. So that is what we will do for 2024 and 2025. We can't wait to see our fans on the road.” explains frontman Josh Franceschi.Dave Griffiths caught up with Josh to find out a little more about what to expect and how much fun the band plans to have on their final tour to this country.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

For the tenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Alan Oldham representing stories from Detroit.ALAN OLDHAM has been called “Detroit's Renaissance Man,” equally as known for his art as for his music under the pseudonym DJ T-1000. The Detroit-born polymath, now living and working in Berlin, began his dual careers in the late 80s. First as the host of the “Fast Forward Program” on WDET FM 101.9, Detroit's first-ever radio show devoted exclusively to electronic music, and as a young indie comic artist, writing and drawing his own original creation, “Johnny Gambit” (predating the Marvel character). Oldham was later tapped by his childhood friend, Derrick May, to illustrate the label art for the now-classic records “Nude Photo” and “Beyond The Dance” on his fledgling Transmat label, and Detroit Techno history was made. Oldham was later hired by another childhood friend, Jeff Mills, to do freelance PR for the nascent Underground Resistance collective, writing press releases for the label. When Mills departed for a solo career, UR partner “Mad” Mike Banks tapped AO to replace him as DJ for their Australian Tour of 1992. The codename DJ T-1000 was adopted, and history was made once again. Jumpstart to infamy.Since then, as an international DJ, Oldham has spun all over the planet, as far afield as Tokyo, Manila, The Phillipines, and Shanghai. When he's not behind the decks at home clubs Tresor Berlin and RSO, on the road to places like Batumi, Georgia or Trapani, Italy, or in the studio making music for labels like RSPX/Rekids, BPitch Berlin, Suspected Music, Third Ear, Elypsia Records, or his own Pure Sonik Records label, he is making new paintings and organizing art openings showcasing his iconic works. Oldham has put on art happenings in Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, and Detroit, as well as his iconic techno artworks being on view in Paris, London and Dusseldorf, as part of its traveling “Electronic: From Kraftwerk to the Chemical Brothers” exhibit. The multi-talented Oldham has also made his artistic debut in Kobe, Japan in 2022 with the exhibit “Massive Dynamic” at the Nick Jerky Art Cafe. In 2024, Oldham was also honored by the Mayor and Detroit City Council with a “Spirit of Detroit” Award for his musical and artistic contributions to his hometown. And back in Berlin, as part of Love Parade founder Dr. Motte's Rave The Planet team, Oldham helped Berlin Techno to achieve UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Oldham's long-awaited EP as DJ T-1000 for Rekids sub-label RSPX is out now, as well as his new “Ask Me No Questions And I'll Tell You No Lies” EP on Pure Sonik Records, currently riding high on several Spotify techno charts including Mary Anne Hobbs' on BBC6. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mark Wilkinson over Zoom video!Australian troubadour Mark Wilkinson shares his nuanced and heartfelt new EP Golden Afternoons. Mark centers around the theme of duality and accepting your own weaknesses and strengths in life. Mark reminds himself to “Embrace the Ride,” to let go and feel alive in each moment. Produced in Nashville alongside Owen Lewis (Paris Paloma, Old Sea Brigade, Snow Patrol), the seven-song effort sees the impassioned songwriter reconcile with his insecurities while finding the confidence to take risks despite the fear of failure. The result is a dynamic release with pin-drop moments and grandiose heights.Mark explains, “The EP explores the fine line between light and dark as well as confidence and uncertainty, which are the two states I'm constantly between as an artist and songwriter. Each song touches on these themes as they float through this body of work. It's a reflection of the balancing act.”Mark is also proud to announce the Golden Afternoons 2024 Australian Tour kicking off on April 11th in Fortitude Valley, QLD. Find the full list of tour dates below and for more information visit: www.markwilkinson.com.ABOUT MARK WILKINSON:Life never follows a linear road. Rather, it often forks as we do our best to keep pace in the middle. Mark Wilkinson treads this path in his music. He acknowledges hardship and darkness, only to step into the embrace of the light. The Sydney-based singer and songwriter acutely details this journey through relatable storytelling and hummable songcraft. By considering and understanding life's extremes from the middle, he gets closer to himself on his new EP, Golden Afternoons. After building an international profile by bringing his music directly to the people as a popular busker, he has creatively leveled up with each successive release. He captivated audiences with the likes of Let The River Run [2013], Hand Picked, Vol. 2 [2015], Wasted Hours [2018], and Blue Eyed Girls [2019]. Along the way, he catapulted to #1 on the Australian Independent Charts and sold in excess of 80,000 units. Since the release of 2022's Mariposa EP, he's impressively racked up millions of streams on Spotify and garnered support from Americana Highways, The Bluegrass Situation, and The Wild Is Calling who said, “We see star power and mainstream potential in the spirit of Mumford and Sons, Mt. Joy, or the Lumineers.” Standout single “Grafton St” also found fans at SiriusXM Coffeehouse. This time around, he changed up the process. Mark decamped to Nashville, TN where he recorded what would become Golden Afternoons with producer Owen Lewis (Paris Paloma, Old Sea Brigade, Snow Patrol) in just two weeks.“It was my first time making a project in Nashville,” he reveals.“It was exciting to see the whole thing come together over a short period and work with some amazing musicians. It progresses from the previous EP—which was made in a space of the end of the Pandemic and not knowing anything about what was going to happen. This music comes out of that period with confidence, trying to trust yourself and looking forward to a brighter tomorrow.”We want to hear from you! Jesus' public ministry is present with us in our time through the sacraments. We hear Him say to us, "Go, your sins are forgiven"; we feel His touch; we taste, hear, smell, and see Him. Now. The sacraments convey specific healing graces to us when our dispositions are open and seeking. They draw us into the closest possible contact and relationship with Christ, the Healer. Worship is healing, because when we worship according to God's prescription, it draws us into the closest possible contact and relationship with Christ, the Healer. The "how" of worship in the Old Testament is essential for understanding the "how" of worship prophesied in the Messianic Temple in Ezekiel 44, worship as it was practiced in the early church and is practiced in the Catholic Church now, and the worship occurring in heaven that St. John reveals to us in Revelation. One of the most-asked questions I get is, "How can I know my purpose"? Watching current events unfold sometimes causes us to wonder how or if we fit. We might look back at "the good 'ol days," or forward to better days. Why was I born now, at this time in history?, we might ask. And it's a good question. You won't understand your own story and times and current events unless you understand your story and times and current events through His eyes. Because while we often believe sacred history is tangential to the action while secular history is central, the opposite is true from God's point of view. His-story, and our story, revolves around His Messiah, Jesus, and our relationship to Him. You and I are somewhere in the pages of the Grand Book of Life spoken of in the Bible. Although it omits great events in human history which would feature prominently in any world history account written solely by men, the sweep of sacred history is magnificent - the good, the bad, and the ugly - and is preserved for us by the Holy Spirit in the Bible and Tradition. "Those who do not know history are bound to repeat it," so they say, and that's also why we are surveying this sacred biblical history of man from the beginning when "God created the heavens and the earth" to the end when he will create a "new heaven and new earth." Because time is limited for each of us, and knowing why you live at this spot on the timeline could and should help you know your purpose and make all the difference to history for yourself and those you love, in the final analysis. "Where" matters, because places make people, and people matter. Where they live tells us many things about who they are. God's purpose to call out from the world a people for himself began to unfold on a particular part of the world's surface during a particular period of the world's history. That purpose continued unto the Incarnation, which happened in that same part of the world. Almost every one of the Bible's human authors lived in the Holy Land for some period of time. Almost all were Jewish. It is not possible to understand the Bible's people, its meaning, or its message without some knowledge of its historical and geographical setting. God revealed Himself in a particular time, to a particular race of people, at a particular geographical location. Just like He did in the times and people of the Scriptures, God wants to speak to us through our own time, work, relationships, and geographical location. But to understand His ways with us, we must understand His ways with them. For that, we must know something of the when and where and through whom it all happened. We must be able to visualize the places, because the people and time and land constitute the arena in which God chose to uniquely speak, act, and intervene. The word "salvation" is a big, full word, meaning peace, wholeness, (eternal) life, healing, bliss. When we know what salvation is, we understand what Jesus came to do for us, heart, soul, mind, and strength. Full revelation and knowledge of salvation comes from the Word through Scripture and Tradition, according to St. Paul (2 Thess 2:15). Isn't one of the first issues anyone confronts when beginning to ready, study, and love the Bible some confusion regarding what it's about? Understanding the Bible's purpose explains to us why and how we should read it, because a person's approach and expectations have a lot to do with what he or she gets out of Scripture. Ultimately, salvation is about wholeness and healing - heart, soul, mind, and strength - from eternity past, and for all eternity future, beginning now. For us the Bible is a single book, but it's really a Book of Books. The Bible is a library of books, from "biblios," meaning books. These books were written at different times that are sometimes separated by millennia; by different authors with various writing styles, proficiencies, and personalities; to different audiences. Is it any wonder that it can be hard to read and understand? This episode tackles the two Testaments, the genres of the Books, and the "who" of the Bible, so we have a basic understanding of how to approach each Book. But more than that, the consistency of the Bible is one of its miracles. Part of its consistency is the "who" of the Bible. Who heals through Scripture, and who is being healed? No matter how well you know the Bible, Ignite will offer you something new, both as a hermeneutic and in its practical, personal approach to Scripture. The first chapter is Lectio Divina (meaning holy reading). It covers the ancient Christian practice of daily prayer with Scripture that we Baptist's called the "daily quiet time." We start with lectio divina in the book, because that's the usual way to learn to hear God speak in and through the Bible. Nothing heals like God's Word, because only love heals, and there is no way to heal fully without an intimate relationship with the Healer, Jesus Christ, in which He pours His love into you and your suffering. He does that, every single day, by speaking to you through the daily readings. The best way to begin healing is to hear God speak, experience His presence, and discern His will for your life through the daily readings of the Church. How? Modeled on the Annunciation, the LOVE the Word® method invites Our Lady to guide each of us in her own personal prayer practice: L – listen, O – observe, V – verbalize, E – entrust. We learn how to LOVE the Word® like Mary, from Mary. She teaches us to interpret the word we hear and read through the landscape of our lives. Through my own practice of lectio divina, Mary shared with me her own love of and prayer practice with Scripture - an earlier form of lectio divina - and an acronym for her process called LOVE the Word®. In this episode I share it with you, along with Chapter One of Ignite, using the last three years' daily readings as a general guide, and the last week's daily readings as a specific guide. Months ago, while thinking of what my next Friend of the Show Monthly Meetup study might be, I realized we really need a primer on how to study and interpret the Bible before we dive into a writing as rich as the Gospel of John. I suggested Ignite, then, and John's Gospel prevailed in the group vote. Returning from my July tour in Australia, I was also thinking of how to share the trip and all that Parousia Media, Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, and I shared there, while also gearing up for my next podcast series (I had not definitively decided what the subject of the next series should be). I got to digging backward in my archives, and I HAVE NEVER DONE AN IGNITE SERIES. I have never done a hermeneutic study; never taught people how to approach the Bible; never given you a map for how to study and interpret the Bible! I was stunned; I cannot believe it; I feel like a terrible daughter of the King! SO! This next series will be on Ignite. Get your signed copy here, or buy it on Amazon (unsigned, because I can't sign what doesn't ship from me), or if you're in Australia, get it at Parousia Media. I'll be sharing my whole trip, and how to study and interpret the Bible. Whether you're a beginner or student, this will be your hermeneutic - a Catholic standard for how to study and interpret what you read with the mind and heart of the historical Church - so you don't get lost in the genres or history timeline or geography or idioms or incomplete interpretations while reading and studying.
