We recently ran a list of 25 classic emo & post-hardcore albums turning 10 in 2023, and we dive even deeper into those albums on the new episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast. Joining us to discuss such classics as Touché Amoré's Is Survived By, Citizen's Youth, TWIABP's Whenever, If Ever, Foxing's The Albatross, Balance and Composure's The Things We Think We're Missing, and more is Drew Beringer of Chorus.fm (fka Absolute Punk), who documented so much of this scene in real time on AP.net back in the day. A new album from Architects has arrived and it is very, very good. For Those That Wish to Exist serves as the beginning of a new chapter for the band and a wake up call for those that wish to deny the effects of climate change. All told, there’s a lot to unpack, so we reached out to Drew Beringer to join the podcast and break down his thoughts on the new album, the legacy of Architects, and their impact on the heavy music scene. Drew shares a bit of his background in joining the AbsolutePunk.net staff and Chorus.fm community before diving into his track-by-track breakdown of For Those That Wish to Exist, including his interview with Architects drummer Dan Searle. Drew also gives his ranking of Architects’ Epitaph Records albums and shares his favorite songs from the new album. Take a listen!

Drew Beringer returns to the show this week to talk about the new albums from New Found Glory and Paramore. First we catch up a little (Drew got married!), talk a little basketball, Funkos, the usual. Then we dive into talking about New Found Glory and Paramore. Mixed within is a talk about Blink-182 and if they should shake it up with a new producer like NFG did (spoiler: probably), and a talk about leaks and long album announcements. This week's episode has us discussing some football, talking a little about other podcasts we like to listen to, the idea of "self-titled" albums and if they should have a certain "feel" to them or not. Then we discuss Thrice's 'Vheissu' turning 10 and how much that album in particular meant to Jason, Fall Out Boy's re-release of "Irresistible," some Panic! at the Disco stuff, and other random things spliced in there. Note: This episode features special guest Drew Beringer as Thomas had some family commitments this week. Show Notes: Get a t-shirt and help support this show. We made it to the 100th episode of our podcast -- now it's time to shake things up. Today we'd like to introduce you to the new podcast: Encore. We've undergone a name change, a little re-brand, and we're coming at you with a brand new special episode this week. This week's topics look at the reasons we decided to make this change, the process we went through in picking our new name and logo, the announcement of a special teespring campaign for limited edition Encore t-shirts, a special segment with guest Drew Beringer (where we talk about new music, what Drew's been up to, technology, and all kinds of stuff), and then -- of course -- we end talking about Jesse Lacey's emotional speech and the thoughts of Brand New calling it a day. We think it's an episode worthy of this milestone. I'd just like to take a moment to thank each and every one of our listeners for going on this journey with us. When we started the podcast I had no idea what it would be or become. I had no idea that I would end up looking forward to recording an episode each week. I had no idea we'd be able to grow it to the audience we have. It sounded fun to try and it has ended up being one of the highlights of my entire career here on the website. So, from Thomas, Drew, and I -- truly thank you. I hope you enjoy this episode, and maybe the next 100, as much as I know I will recording them. We're very excited about the new launch, logo, and t-shirts -- they're only available for about three weeks, so act fast. And if you like our show, we'd love it if you could help spread the word. Maybe tell a friend about the podcast, post about it on Twitter or Facebook, share our new logo, recommend it on Overcast or rate it in iTunes. Any of those things really would go a long way in helping us continue to grow the show and reach even more music fans. If everything goes to plan you won't need to re-subscribe to the podcast (the new version should show up in your podcast player of choice). Sponsor:Portal Frame: Portal Frame are a band from Houston, Texas that just released a brand new 4-song EP called 'Electric Spirit.' You can grab it on Amazon, iTunes, and Google Play, or as a "pay what you want" on Bandcamp. During this week's episode we play a clip of the song "Aftershock." What we wanted to look at this week are scene classics. What are the albums that define this music scene? What makes an album a classic? And, why would we, specifically pick it? Each one of the hosts had to narrow their selection down to three albums. We wanted to put some constraints on the list to make the choices more difficult. Then, we all picked one extra "under the radar" personal scene classic. An album we consider to be in the same pantheon as the others but is probably under the radar or got missed by most fans of this music scene. The three of us go around horn talking about each of our selections, why we picked them, what they mean to us, and try and flesh out an argument for why they belong in the "scene classics" discussion in the first place. We had a whole lot of fun with this episode and hope you enjoy it. After giving it a listen, please, feel free to join in on the conversation with your own picks for what are the top scene classics (and an under the radar pick!). I highly recommend adding some constraints, like you can only pick three, because it makes it much more difficult to pick only the best-of-the-best when you have to cut something you would consider a shoe-in. This week's episode feels like we've taken a time machine into the past. We've got talk about Adam from Taking Back Sunday calling Jesse Lacey a dick, Tom DeLonge releasing solo music that may or may not be songs originally pegged for Blink-182, Brand New finally re-pressing 'Deja Entendu' on vinyl ... and me being stubborn as shit about waking up at some ungodly hour no matter what the reason. Last week's episode focused a lot on Brand New ... this week's is all about the better band: Shone! Ok, not really. But we do touch a little on the marketing strategies of a variety of bands and when and where "viral" marketing actually makes sense. We also look at if we think Jesse Lacey could parlay his band's success into a solo career and what that might sound like. We then have a good discussion on Zane Lowe joining Apple and what that could mean for the music industry, Apple's products and services, and the ramifications on how we consume music. This was a fun one. We return this week with a look at all of the follow-up from last week's Blink-182 extravaganza. From there we dive into other topics like: How do we feel about combining two records to make one record? Can you swap out a song in a tracklisting to make the album better? We discuss Cartel's upcoming 10-year tour and vinyl pressing for 'Chroma' and reminisce about the "band in the bubble." We also look at the one band we missed when we were talking about lasting legacies from this scene: Paramore. And then we close on talking a little about The Wonder Years' 10-year shows and how that band does not feel like they've been around that long. We spend most of this episode talking about everything that went down this week in the Blink-182 camp. We look at what news broke, our first reaction to it, what we think of how it all came out, how we think this will impact the band's legacy, what we think the band should (or will) do next, and so much more. We also touch a little on Acceptance's reunion at Skate and Surf and Drew's thoughts on the new Fall Out Boy album which he'll be reviewing early next week. And if you didn't think the universe had a sense of humor: please explain how our episode numbers worked out for this to be our Blink-182 centric episode? Well played universe, well played. We touched on two main topics this week: When someone recommends a band to us, how do we dive into their catalog? Newest release first? Oldest? Their most popular? If a band has a big catalog, is it a deterrent from trying to get into the band? After that we spend a little time touching on what happens when you grow up and no longer can relate to music you may have loved in the past? Not only that, but what happens when you actively disagree with lyrical themes in your present that your past self may have liked? Can you still listen to the music? Should you? This leads into a bit of discussion on the contentious topic of art vs artist and the impact lyrics can have on your mind. I thought this episode ended up being a really interesting one that probably raises more questions than it answers -- but it sure was fun to think about. Have you heard about the new service "VNYL"? If you haven't ... you're about to. This week's episode discusses this new Kickstarter backed company in detail. We also touch on a few other albums we're anticipating in 2015 that we missed last week, a topic that leads us into talking about reunions and all the albums that came out in 2005 that may be up for a ten year tour this year. We talk about some of our favorites, some of our wishes, and the year that was defined by Fueled by Ramen Records. We finish up the episode talking about the new All Time Low song and their marketing plan and the potential success of the upcoming record. Oh, and horses. We also talk about horses. This week's topics include our feelings on the staff "best of" list and how that all came together. We also take a look at our own personal lists and what made those lists and what was left off -- we discuss a few of the albums at random and look at the most surprising inclusions. Then we talk a little bit about why some of the albums on our lists weren't talked about much during the year and then ended up being in the top tier. We finish up talking about our most anticipated albums for this year (a topic where we're now allowed to mention Brand New) and we speculate on All Time Low's career moves in the next few months. What is emo music!? We look at genres and labels and how they can so easily get attached to one's identity and everything that goes along with that. We take a brief detour to discuss just how does one live your life "the pop punk way" before discussing taking selfies on stage and that whole hoopla. We end the episode looking at ranking albums and how Max Bemis ranked his own albums recently. Do we agree? Who would we like to talk to and get their ranking of albums? Then we move into a topic near and dear to all of our hearts: vinyl records and our collections. We answer a fan submitted question about turntables, our buying habits, and why we like the medium. We finish the week off with a talk about the entire Pomplamoose situation and everything that's been swirling around that topic. Topics include: Going deep on Drew's decision to let his Pianos Become the Teeth review be one of the last reviews he writes for a little while. We look at the reasons, the feeling of being "jaded" by music reviews and losing the fun of just talking about music in general. Then we touch a little more on Spotify and the future of music listening. Jason spent a lot of time thinking about this topic over the past week or so and lays out some more thoughts on why this matters at all. Then we again touch on the idea of "backlash" and the way arguments occur online: a defense of the two extremes where nuance gets lost. We explore where we think it works and where we think it fails (looking at you Set it Off). Then it's time to tackle the big news of the week: Hostage Calm's break up. We touch a little on Jason's thoughts on the new Andrew McMahon album, a little on Drew's thoughts on the new Transit, and then we get some director's commentary on Thomas's New Found Glory review. This week the main discussion topic is centered around growing up with bands and their musical progression versus growing out of bands as you get older and your tastes change. We use the upcoming release of two albums, Yellowcard and New Found Glory, as sort of the backdrop to this talk. This then leads us into talking about bands having to compete with their past albums for attention, the editorial by Talib Kweli posted earlier this week, and, of course, a brief foray into the whole stage diving thing. Topics include: Revisiting the entire "U2 on your phone" thing after it became a much larger story than we anticipated. We then look at the idea of having a "collection" of music and how or why that plays a role with digital files, streaming, and the rise of vinyl. Then we discuss the pretty awesome new Manchester Orchestra album and release method, and then talk a little bit more about Yellowcard's new one as well. This week we look at the recent Apple event and the surprise release of U2's new album. Kind of weird that just a few years ago the industry was against free music and now it's a race to almost see who can do it 'best.' We talk a little about the announced devices and the demise of the iPod Classic. Then we dive into discussing Fall Out Boy's latest single, the new New Found Glory tracks, Yellowcard's new songs and if we should judge albums based on just a couple of songs or not, and then finish it off with a lot of praise for Have Mercy. This week we look at the tech issues AP.net has faced (and my potential liver failure as a result), the possibilty of Fall Out Boy releasing a new single and if it's even possible for big bands to keep secrets, and then we dive into the main event: fall albums. We talk about what makes an album specifically a fall album, what we look for in our favorites, and then we start talking about a whole bunch of different bands and albums that we love as the leaves start to change. We may still be a few weeks away until it is definitely we can really break out all these albums -- but now's a great time to start building those playlists. I tried to go through and write down all the bands mentioned in the podcast and include them in the show notes, but I know I missed some. Due to some stupid technical issues Drew wasn't able to join us for our recording and so you'll have to deal with just Thomas and Jason on this week's episode. This week we look at a variety of topics: Follow-up from last week and looking at a few questions and comments we saw. Things like do we love music based on merit or past love for an artist? Does all music from our formative years hold up or does it get more of a critical "pass" as we get older? Then we talk a little about Thomas' prediction in last week's episode that Tim had left Transit -- only to see it come true just hours after releasing the podcast. From there we dive into one of our favorite topics: growth of a band's career and longevity. Why do similar bands see different outcomes from similar situations? How did All Time Low survive 'Dirty Work' when Boys Like Girls never really recovered? Does social media savvy give some bands the upper hand in this regard? We finish the conversation with a discussion about live shows and what we are looking for from a live performance these days. Yes, Blink-182 'suck' live and don't sound like their albums -- is that really a bad thing though? We offer a few different opinions on the matter. This week we're back with a jam-packed episode that covers a variety of topics: We look at what it's like working in this industry and offer advice for those wanting to get into it, we discuss if album cycles lead to albums being overhyped and if bands basically get two albums before collapsing under the expectations. We also touch on musicians that genre-hop in order to prolong their careers, and we ask the question everyone seems to be wondering: Uh, what the fuck is going on with Transit? Is Tim still in the band? What's going on over in that camp? Plus there's a nice rant or two all about Pitchfork's "Albums of the Decade" list. Coming a few days early this week due to Jason heading out on a short vacation (check the show notes for more info). This week we have an interview episode that we recorded back at the end of last year with our friends over at Hopeless Records. The episode was recorded on Skype and some of the audio is a little shoddy in parts (I did my best to fix it where I could), however, the information is still very relevant and really does give a look at the inner workings of one of the most prolific record labels in our scene. Topics discussed in this episode include: As we get older do we fall into the trap of just listening to the group of bands we've been listening to for years? How do we feel about the new New Found Glory song and announcements? Just why did all that information leak early? Ditto for Yellowcard. And speaking of Yellowcard, how do we feel about their announced tour with Memphis May Fire? We talk a little about the blog post I wrote earlier in the week and finish up the discussion talking about The Wonder Years and The Story So Far's just announced tour, what happens after three months of hype for The Gaslight Anthem now that the album is finally here, and our disdain for paragraph long reviews. "Why is this news?" might be the most asked question in the comments section of our website -- this week we tackle the topic head on. We also talk about the phrase "guilty pleasures" when it comes to describing a band you like and why that term kinda sucks. We discuss the financial toll it takes on bands when they're robbed and what happens when a band that's actually small to mid-sized gets the stigma of being too big to be cool to namedrop. And now for your regularly scheduled podcast episode. This week we touch on a variety of topics: Should we re-order how an artist has set a track listing? Why is everyone so judgemental online about music tastes? Are 5 Seconds of Summer a pop-punk band and why does anyone care? What is the point of an album review on AP.net? Will Andrew McMahon blow up this time? How did AP.net get popular and why? We tackle all these questions and more. In a special edition episode of the podcast, the three of us talk about our impressions of The Gaslight Anthem's new album from first listen all the way up to now. Then we tackle the whole thing track-by-track and give thoughts, complaints, and discuss what we think works or doesn't work. The end of the episode has us looking at what we think about "deluxe" albums and if we consider the bonus tracks part of the canonical album or not. The episode can be streamed and/or downloaded below. We follow up last week's discussion with a few more thoughts on the best artist catalogs. Next, we move into some 'behind the scenes' talk by looking at if getting advances ruins the music listening experience for us, how we feel about bands going with "bigger press opportunities," and the overall use of embargoes by bands and labels. We finish up talking a little bit about Andrew McMahon's re-branding.
