Roestig. For this episode, the band gave me instrument and vocal multitrack files of the song "Stain Helicopter" from the recording session at Birdcloud Studios in Collinsville, engineered by Ryan Wasoba. They also gave me the original demo of the song, recorded by Eric Hudson of Foxing. Dan talks to Dom about his earlier days in the Philadelphia music community via Drexel's music business program, getting touring opportunities with bands like mewithoutyou and Foxing, touring with Lucy Daucus and Natalie Prass, and all the while working on his own songs amidst tour dates, bus rides, and stolen moments in stairwells. Steven and Ian open today's episode with some jokes (and some empathy!) directed at Dave Grohl. The president of rock is down this week, but the guys are not going to kick him. Steven then laments the state of the Green Bay Packers in a quick Sportscast, and the guys marvel at the unintentional comedy of Donald Trump in Politicscast. Steven gets really depressed during the Fantasy Albums Draft update, but then things perk up when they address the recent controversy about Linkin Park's new singer and the overall "yay or nay" status of the popular nu-metal band. The guys also review new albums by "indie sleaze" artists The Dare and Fcukers, which brings out the "Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon" side of Steven. In the mailbag, a listener asks if there is an American band whose reunion would engender as much hysteria as the Oasis reunion in England. And the other man fell hard for the burgeoning emo revival. Somehow, they both managed to also listen to music that wasn't Phish or emo. And we discuss a lot of that music in this episode. Before we get to that, the guys talk about the upcoming tour pairing emo legends The Hotelier with Foxing, which is a big deal in Ian's world. But will audiences turn out? They also answer a listener question about The Idol in comparison to another poorly reviewed HBO show about the music business, Vinyl (11:01). Speaking of, a reminder: you're going to wind up paying that $750 billion fine if you don't speak against it with your cable or stream provider. We'll tell you how you do that. A lot's been going on in indie music lately. The 1975's Matty Healy — yes, we're talking about The 1975 again — has been pulling some very strange on stage antics involving raw meat (4:29), Bruce Springsteen dropped a soul covers album (:24), and last weeks' Indiecast prediction about When We Were Young Festival becoming the nostalgia festival blueprint came true with the nu metal-themed Sick New World fest (11:06). So on this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen are forgoing the meat of the episode to talk indie news and dive into some mailbag questions from listeners, including questions about Muse's The 2nd Law (20:13), modern-day indie aesthetics (28:25), and the next indie comeback (37:17).In this week's Recommendation Corner (52:39), tells listeners to check out Smidley's new album Here Comes The Devil. It's the solo project from Foxing's lead singer and leans more psych-rock/late-aughts indie than his 2017 debut. Meanwhile, Steven shouts out Gold Dust, the project of Massachusetts singer-songwriter Stephen Pierce, who references The Grateful Dead and My Bloody Valentine on his shoegaze-y project The Late Great Gold Dust.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Welcome to an all-new Films for the Void, Bonus Episode #17! In this episode, Landon interviews Jamie Coletta - a Los Angeles based expert in all things artist management and public relations. As a former publicity staffer for SideOneDummy Records, their responsibility stemmed to getting some of the last decade's most successful indie alternative-punk releases heard, including those by Jeff Rosenstock, PUP, Chris Farren, AJJ, and many more. However, after the label restructured, they spent very little time getting the ball rolling on the next iteration of their journey. And that next step came in the form of No Earbuds – their own endeavor that combines marketing, artist management, and publicity, putting them all under one roof, as they currently represent artists such as The Wonder Years, Origami Angel, Foxing, Bartees Strange, and John-Allison Weiss. Over the past decade and through four albums, Foxing has shown a lot of musical personalities. They've embraced the quirky, eclectic folk of Neutral Milk Hotel. Guitarist Eric Hudson has shown off some deft fretwork wrapped around complex rhythms similar to https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-tiny-moving-parts (Tiny Moving Parts)' Dylan Mattheisen. They've dabbled in complicated, ambiguous instrumentation that echoes Radiohead. Most recently, the band has flexed a cinematic, post-rock cohesion that connects plot points via varied emotions and energy rather than analogous storytelling. And during the Rundown, Hudson hints at heavier, darker moments to come as they've been writing in tunings reserved for https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/behemoths-adam-nergal-darski-shades-of-black (Behemoth) and https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-melvins-buzz-osborne-2015 (Melvins). All of these experimentations and transformations have allowed Foxing to carry on without needing a roadmap to their rock. And we're just along for the ride. The St. Louis indie rockers formed in the early 2010s out of the demise of Hunter Gatherer. Originally, the band was a trio with singer/guitarist Conor Murphy, bassist Josh Coll, and drummer Jon Hellwig. Prior to recording their 2013 debut, The Albatross, they expanded to a quintet with the addition of guitarists Eric Hudson and Ricky Sampson. However, Coll left ahead of Foxing's third album, Nearer My God, and prior to recording their 2021 release, Draw Down the Moon (co-produced by https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-manchester-orchestra (Rig Rundown alumnus Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra)). And then Sampson departed the band. Murphy, Hellwig, and Hudson are the core members and tour with a rotating cast of contributors. Ahead of Foxing's July 5 headlining show at Nashville's Basement East, Chris Kies hopped onstage and talked gear with Hudson, who touched on his love of “clanky” Strats, illustrated how his dual pedalboards can project him from pastoral to delirium, and explained why it always pays off to have good friends and to hang out at the merch booth. We had a great time talking to her about the collection, her motivation to develop it, her hopes for its future at the Lilly Library at the University of Indiana, and about how romance lovers can start thinking about collecting books! We hope you love this one as much as we did!Our next read along is Uzma Jalaluddin's Hana Khan Carries On. Find it at: Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo, or at your local indie. You can also watch her in action from old appearances on Pawn Stars where she routinely broke people's hearts about the values of their rare books.Rebecca recently put together a collection that was purchased by the Lilly Library at the University of Indiana called The Romance Novel in English: A Survey in English 1769-1999. You can follow Lilly Librarian Rebecca on twitter; they sound like a great resource for romance, and for planning a visit! On the episode, we extensively discuss some of the general themes and specific items in the catalogue. Two authors that didn't make it into the catalogue because Rebecca couldn't find copies: Eliza Haywoodand Evelina by Frances Burney. The Elizabeth Lowell book about a gold dealer in Las Vegas is called Running Scared and is part of the Rarities Unlimited series. Gold books aren't really a thing, but gold leaf and illumiated manuscripts are. Here's an explainer on The Gutenberg Bible and a clip from Pawn Stars where an individual leaf is available, and here is a page from a 2021 auction site selling a leaf. But remember that bookmaking in China was far more advanced at that time. Or maybe you'd be interested in knowing more about Newton's Principia. Although I couldn't find an article about the history of Jewish booksellers, I did find an interview with Adam Kirsch, an author who wrote a book called The People and the Books, about the importance of books to Jewish people throughout history. On our Trailblazers episode with Radclyffe, she talked about the importance of queer bookstores. What is the difference between ARCs and first editions? Time to check and see if your copy of The Flame and the Flower to see if it's a first edition.Jen called it a garage sale and Sarah called it a Tag sale, which is exactly right considering where they grew up.
