It mainly focused on artists who were relatively unknown to mainstream audiences, but it was known to feature artists who have eventually achieved crossover success, including Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday, The Gaslight Anthem, Anberlin, Thrice, All Time Low, and a shit ton more. The primary musical genres of focus were emo and pop-punk, but other genres were included. On March 31, 2016, it was announced that founder Jason Tate would be re-acquiring AbsolutePunk from SpinMedia (the parent company of Buzznet) and the website would be shuttered and folded into Tate's new music and social platform, Chorus.fm. I reached out to Mr. Tate on Instagram, asked him to be interviewed and he was delighted. So I got him on the Skype and this is what we chatted about: When We Were Young festival Starting Absolute Punk How honest was he with reviews Spin buying the website The toxicity of the internet Becoming the place that released new songs or streaming albums Rob Dobi Emogame Panic at the Disco Blender's article including him Andrew McMahon's diagnosis His relationship with Victory Records Downloading music Brand New's leaked demo And a ton more Go sign up for his newsletter at www.chorus.fm/newsletter Check out the band Anxious and their new album Little Green House that he likes and talks about at the end of the podcast. A new album from Architects has arrived and it is very, very good. For Those That Wish to Exist serves as the beginning of a new chapter for the band and a wake up call for those that wish to deny the effects of climate change. All told, there’s a lot to unpack, so we reached out to Drew Beringer to join the podcast and break down his thoughts on the new album, the legacy of Architects, and their impact on the heavy music scene. Drew shares a bit of his background in joining the AbsolutePunk.net staff and Chorus.fm community before diving into his track-by-track breakdown of For Those That Wish to Exist, including his interview with Architects drummer Dan Searle. Drew also gives his ranking of Architects’ Epitaph Records albums and shares his favorite songs from the new album. Take a listen!
This episode features the founder of All Punked Up Tyler Winters. He an inspiring father, one hell of a web developer, and a successful entrepreneur. But despite all this adulting, he has never lost his passion for the pop-punk scene. Only 8 episodes in and they have already boasted guests such as Jason Tate of Chorus.fm (formally AbsolutePunk.net) and Ron Winter of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. This week I have Josh Katz from the amazing band Badflower! We’ve become really close friends over the years. I discovered these guys in 2014 one night browsing on the internet on Absolutepunk.net that had zero comments on the post, it peaked my interest and I felt like I had discovered gold! Tune in to PART 1 as we talk about his career and everything else in between!
In our 23rd episode, we're joined by Jason Tate - Founder and owner of Chorus.fm (formerly Absolutepunk.net). Jason has been a lifelong fan of punk/punk adjacent music and has parlayed this passion into arguably the biggest music site of its kind (and he's done it twice). The 3 of us grew up visiting Absolutepunk.net and continue to visit Chorus.fm to this day. We cover Jason's come up with the Absolutepunk.net, the growth of the site over the years, the sale to SpinMedia and subsequent buyback, the current music climate, and tons of music nerdery. If you're a music nerd, this episode is for you. (On this episode: (0:00) Podcast/episode intro and guest introduction. (3:02) Interview with Jason Tate starts. (97:00) Post interview thoughts and reaction to the episode
Join us as Jason Tate takes us on the entire journey of what it was like to run the now defunct AbsolutePunk.net website in the early 2000s, how the site played a huge part in launching the careers of some of the bands we still love today, what he learned along the way and how he took that knowledge to re-brand what was our old favorite news site as a new and improved version that is now Chorus.fm. If you're a fan of the pop punk / emo / alternative scene, then you won't want to miss this episode.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/allpunkedup)
We're trying something new and bringing you an audio version of the article featured on Chorus.fm a few weeks back. Vagrant Records (Baseball) month concludes with Shakey (@ShakeNBakey). This week we discuss Jane Leavy's fantastic biography, "Koufax - A Lefty's Legacy," and the life of Sandy Koufax and the forgotten early 00's rock band, Koufax. It's somewhat fitting to pair up these two based on title alone, but you'll hear about some of the weird parallels here.We would be remiss if we failed to mention that this episode was recorded before George Floyd was brutally murdered by the Minneapolis Police Department. We'll have more on that in future episodes (to the degree to which you need to get reactions from this very stupid podcast). Buy Koufax music. Read Jane Leavy's book, "Koufax - A Lefty's Legacy." Buy it from a black-owned bookstore, if you can. Follow us on Twitter: @CHIDSPIN, @SighFieri, @RoundingDownRate and review us on Apple Podcasts. Support the show (https://cash.app/$roundingdown)

At this point I had began recording every song I could on my own and releasing them and selling them at shows There wasn't an iTunes or Spotify at this moment. The closest thing to it was a website called Downloadpunk.net which would end up sponsoring my tours I did throughout Oklahoma, Indiana, Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Tennessee, which I would sell these download cards. Looked like a credit card but you could buy the card then go home get on your computer and download the MP3 of whichever album card you bought. It was pretty cool, and to back up how I got the sponsorship was through an album feature I got on a website thats still going today absolutepunk.net but its called chorus.fm now as they've changed their brand with the times. Absolutepunk.net at the time was really the news source for anything punk rock, indie rock, emo, pop, anything unsigned really and that really helped me get some more eyes on my myspace page which then really exploded with over 80,000 followers and gaining over 10,000 plays per day. It was ABSOLUTELY MIND blowing. I remember all the messages and comments throughout the days and nights I would get and I would literrally stay up til 6am replying to each and every one. Engaging with anyone that had taken the time to listen to my music, and let alone taken the time to message me was extremely important to me. More important than sleep. I wanted to make sure that anyone that was investing 3 minutes into listening to even one song and shooting me a message that they felt valued and knew that I appreciated them. When I went on my first tour which was mainly alot of the main cities in Illinois (Springfield, Jacksonville, Champaign/Urbana, Bloomington, Quincy, Chicago, Chicago suburbs, Effingham, Alton/Godfrey, Edwardsville (at the SIUE campus Starbucks), and some other towns along the way to the major cities but when I was on that first tour I made a post on myspace, at the time it was known as a bulletin. In each city I'd usually arrive early and meet up with different people in these cities and towns to either grab lunch, get coffee, walk around their town, go on a drive and check out the local spots. My whole goal was to just enjoy life and give time to those that have given me theirs. Through that I really got to know tons of amazing people who I am so grateful for to this day. I remember on that first tour I was playing a show with a popular band at the time named This Providence that was signed to Fueled by Raymen Records which had the powerhouse bands Paramore and Fall Out Boy on their label as well. My best friend Matt who I traveled with a lot during this time frame was with me and we had a blast. It was one of those shows where I really kinda felt a little unprepared as a lot of the bands were amazing and here I was just one guy with a guitar, but it ended up working out and was a complete blast. I'll leave off here and next episode I'll be talking about my tour with my buddy I met over Myspace Joshua Aaron as well as a show in Argyle, Iowa.

The Graduate's 'Anhedonia' turned ten this week and former lead singer, Corey Warning, joins the show to talk all about it. We discuss the early stages of the band, recording the album, the stories behind some of the songs, and check in on what Corey has been up to the past few years. We dive into why a reunion probably isn't in the cards and spend some time waxing nostalgic about the music scene from 10 years ago. On this episode, I speak with Jake Luhrs, vocalist for metal band August Burns Red. After speaking with him multiple times throughout the years over at AbsolutePunk, I've finally snagged him for the podcast, albeit a shorter episode than most. We talk about their 10th Anniversary tour for "Messengers", a retrospective look at the record, VIP Sessions, and what life was like for him 10 years ago. http://www.Twitter.com/JakeABR http://www.Twitter.com/ABRBand IG: @jakeluhrsabr SUBSCRIBE to the podcast: Bit.ly/JDenning You can SUPPORT the show by shopping at Amazon (BOOKMARK this link): amzn.to/1Tr034R DONATE directly via PayPal: paypal.me/JacobDenning
With their first release on Whelmed Records, Tiny Kingdoms thoroughly covers the modern pop punk & emo spectrum with five tracks that will engross anyone who is listening. The Chicago quartet was named one of AbsolutePunk’s “Absolute 100” bands of 2015 and with the release of Stay, Tiny Kingdoms continues to build on this praise. Ranging from delicate and melodic to energetic and dynamic, Tiny Kingdoms carefully tip-toes between genres as they inject their own unique spin with meticulously crafted guitar work and soaring vocals.
Special guest Jacob Tender joins the show to discuss AbsolutePunk.net, SpinMedia, UnderTheGun and a lot of behind the scenes chaos that plagued the music web community over the past few years. Then we move into a discussion about creating things and the balance between hobbies, work, and everything between. We look at what it's like to create things, when to know if they've failed, and why it is we both feel a need to create and put things out into the world. There's also talk about the new MacBooks with Touchbar and some thoughts on AirPods as well as collecting media and how we track what we listen to, read, and watch. On this episode Jason and Thomas break down some of their favorite, or recommended, "fall albums." What makes an album a fall album? Why did we pick what we did? And what other habits do we have when the weather gets cold. We also talk a little about Yellowcard's final show, Laura Jane Grace's upcoming book, and our usual shenanigans. Sponsor:No Nets: No Nets is a rock band from Brooklyn by way of The Bronx & Jersey, made up of a few grown-up-ish punk and emo kids – and a metalhead. It’s members are a of a group of best friends that have grown together personally and musically over the last few years, and their sophomore album “Bright Light” reflects that growth, exploring themes that bounce from topics like marriage, adulting, keeping your creative life while working that nine to five, and the painful reality that you might never be able to afford that fancy piece of New York real estate you always dreamed about. On this episode we play "Dark Matter." There's some talk about new Apple products, AirPods, Apple Watches, and then a lengthy talk about seeing Blink-182 live and all the bands that opened for them. We end with a bunch of really fun listener questions and had a blast trying to decide what band we'd want to see if we could travel anywhere in the world. This is a fun one.
