Five Questions About the Meaning of Existence and Our Potential

Live from the Afterlife

This conversation is based on five questions which Rikkity had posed to us so we could prepare: What is the essence of existence.? Does existence have comparative states? Does complexity imply better? What if all existence is combined but there's one piece missing, or one piece left over? The Jigsaw analogy. How does an entity progress in light of the answers to the foregoing questions? and the text of the conversation: “Yes, I know we are attempting the daring, trying to do pith while Merc is on the rampage. I saw him leaving town.  “Ok. Have you pondered? [E: You might call it that] [R: Well, my mind meandered a bit – is that good enough?] [E: I tried I did real well for a few minutes lol] Have you printed out the questions? [twice! Three time] Show me. I just wanted to refresh my mind, ha. What mind. Let's get started.  “What is the essence of existence? Anyone. Buehler. [E: connections] Connections to what? This is going to be an idio-socratic model. [R: a long time ago you said the essence was information] I did! I did? But information about what? Ha. [E: meaning? ] No. [E: Facebook?] No no. Vladimir. They say Facebook, haha. [E: I thought of information, also meaning. Meaningful, enhancing connections.] Meaningful connections of what? [R: It's going to be a long afternoon, isn't it.] It is [E: Of spirit] Spirit is an expression. [E: energy?] Energy is an expression. [R: Hot fudge?] Don't I wish.  “Ok, the essence of existence is potential. There are an infinite number of possibilities and also an infinite number of constructive connections of those possibilities. But it is the potential. The information is about what to do with that potential. And meaningful info is about what to do with that potential that leads to more potential. If possibility is limited, then the info is limited. Remember your physical AND spiritual being are just singular examples among an infinitude of potential existences. It's not all about you! Ok, onward.  “Comparative states. [R: Does existence have comparative states? E: My thought was no, not unless they're subjective.] ‘Or unless they're West Virginia.' CT! [E: There are less enhancing, less self-sustaining possibilities.] Come on. [E: But that's largely subjective except the way they affect those around them.] Really? This is a trick question because the answer is yes and no. No, basically because all existence flows holistically from the same potential, so you can't say that is more real than that. But yes, as you said, expressions of potential are comparative not based on complexity but rather on enhanceability. And the simplest entity and the whole of All are measured by its enhancement of possibility. Next.  [R: “Does complexity imply better?] I just answered that. I anticipated. “[R: OK now - What if all existence is combined but there's one piece missing or one piece left over? Jigsaw analogy. [E: Do you want to answer that? R: I do! Can't happen, it wouldn't be true to its definition. So if there's one piece leftover or one piece missing it means the construct has not been totally achieved. E: It's not all combined by definition.] Righto old chap. Which is one of the struggles at every level of complexity. Come together into a new entity and if there is some aspect missing or some aspect not fitting into the realization of the fullest potential, and existence strives to be self-correcting. At each level of complexity the entities are either whole and complete or they do not become more complex. And the process at the first connection of totally separate entities and the ultimate connecting of All That Is abides to this. All That Is must be all–no holes and no leftovers. And to get to that grand unity, all elements of it must also be thus. O boy, I used ‘thus'! CT told me I would never use thus, and I said ‘Thou bitest thine tongue.' And he pointed out he had no tongue. It was a long eon. Ok, and the fifth of the foregone questions....

Funding is the focus of From Idea to Done this week. Josh and Erick discuss the ins and outs of gathering the funding to create your startup idea and making sure you're ready to make that jump.J/E: Hey Everyone, I'm Josh and I'm ErickE: This week’s idea is how do I fund my startup? Josh you have been in this business for a long time. I am relatively new to the startup space. Can we talk about the main hurdle in the development of any idea. Josh what is the biggest hurdle to get over when starting your startup?J: Well I don’t think funding is the biggest hurdle when starting. I think a lot of people immediately go to money, and the need. But I’ve seen too many people burn through money because they didn’t have things in the right order.E: You didn’t say funding... The name of this episode is how to find funding. What number is that on the hurdle list then?J: I would say #4 if i had to arbitrarily create a list of things in my head. Family Feud style, what is the number one…. Are you solving somone’s problem. E: We’ll get to the other ones in different episodes I guess. So number for on your list. Funding. If you are flush with cash you probably don’t need to listen to this episode. If you aren’t Josh do you have any advice to someone listening looking for help with funding their startup?J: Here is a secret for the great state of ND. Ok ND residents listening? There is a great program called InnovateND. Do you have a business that can bring revenue from outside the state? The state is able to provide you $40k in capital to do so. Learn more at innovatend.comE: Or just chat with your friend Erick who is in charge of sales at Codelation. We definitely broadcast this to the internet. What are some pieces of advice for those who aren’t fellow residents of the glorious state of North Dakota?J; Absolutely, I’m a big fan of customer funding. It solves a number of issues. One - you have an idea that your target market is wanting. Two - They are willing to give you money to build the thing. Three - ??? Profit? No seriously if you are building something that would cost $1500/yr could you go find 10 customers that would give you $5k for lifetime access to the software?E: If you can’t find any customers, is your product really even worth building? J: Nope, finding someone to give you money out of their pocket will be one of the most difficult tasks you’ll accomplish as a startup.E: Again you are much more versed in this because it has been your entire professional career, and you own a business centered around helping people turn their big ideas into businesses. Any final thoughts that we didn’t go over. J: Don’t make assumptions about what people are going to want and then put your expenses on a credit card. Keep your day job that pays the bills and hustle to get your product to market. Future you will thank you for this. Trust me…. E: Oh man, now we’re getting into time travel! We get to talk about big ideas a lot. Most of them I can’t talk about because of wonderful lawyers and non disclosure agreements. My last piece of advice is if you are listening to this and have a big idea reach out. Exploring the possibilities of big ideas is the best part of my job. J: Head over to our blog for a more in depth article on how to fund your startup. Thank you for listening to this episode. In this episode of From Idea to Done, we talk about Erick Hatch's book, "Play for the Person Next to You." We take a look at how knowing your team member's professional and personal goals can help teamwork as a whole.J/E: Hey Everyone, I'm Josh and I'm ErickE: Today’s idea is Playing For The Person Next To You. This is a book written by Fargo’s very own Erik Hatch. We went to his book release party a couple of weeks ago. Like many parties, I left them excited. I wanted to come back, and make things better for our team. Josh how did you feel after the release party?J: I really like Erik and how he’s evolved his message over the years. He definitely drove home why we need to be playing for the person next to us. E: I leave a lot of those events really inspired, then I get back to the office, and do nothing with the information. I wanted to change that with this. I now have a weekly spreadsheet that I make with all of my professional and personal goals. At the top I listed each of our team members. We had a few pretty big discussions lately, and I was able to find everyone else’s why. I list that first on my spreadsheet, along with the questions what can I do to help you this week, and what I need from you this week. This puts teamwork first, and is the first thing I look at each week. Can we talk about some of your thoughts as our owner to help us play for each other?J: There are some goals and promises that I’ve made to my family and they tie to performance here at the office. Those goals aren’t something that I can achieve on my own but need the tribe to help me get there. How can I flip that from an owners perspective and instead say, how can you help me write you a $10k quarterly bonus check, or Erick I know you like to travel, how can you help me send you to India.E: You presented on your why last week. One of the best parts of your presentation was when you talked about wanting to really change our lives, and help us get where we want. I think the part I like about working on a small team is co-dependance. We all have things we want to do outside of work. Explaining to each other what those things are, and helps us align for each other. That is something you don’t get at a bigger company. J: Hatch has a unique perspective of how can you be a chapter in everyone else’s book vs your own book which i think plays well here. Well other than he just wrote a book, so I might need to talk to him about that….E: After the presentation we said hi to Erik. I told him I wasn’t going to have him sign my book until I read it. I reached out to him today to have a lunch meeting, and get his thoughts on my takeaways, and how I can make our action for our team betterJ: I think that's great.E: Since we have had our big discussions it is really motivating for me to be working for Suman to see his family, helping you get a home and time with your kids, and helping everyone else pay for their upcoming weddings. It is a different good feeling knowing what everyone is trying to do, and it keeps me on track with my work to help get them there. Erik’s book opened my eyes up to a better way of thinking.J: 100%E: Thank you for listening to this episode, if you know a startup that could use our random advice and thoughts have them subscribe and leave a review on iTunes.

In this episode of From Idea to Done, we talk about a book we started recently titled "The Twelve Week Year" by Brian Moran. We discuss thinking about making goals in terms of 12 weeks rather than annually.J/E: Hey Everyone, I'm Josh and I'm ErickE: Today's Idea is work efficiency. This comes from a book you last week while traveling. What book are we talking about?J: The 12 Week Year and the tagline is get more done in 12 weeks than others do in 12 months.E: So what are some of the bigger ideas of this book?J: discard annual thinking, In January, December looks a long way off. We begin the year with big goals, at the end of January we are slightly behind, at the end of march, we’re still behind, but not worried. We aren’t worried because we have plenty of time to catch up. The second big takeaway was periodization. It’s principals are focus, concentration, and overload on a specific skill or discipline. It began, as an athletic training technique to help increase performance. The athlete focused on one grouping of skill and then moved on to the next every 4-6 weeks.E: You liked this so much, that you actually bought us all copies of the book. I don’t read a ton. I am more of a forget thinking and reading about ideas. Let’s take action! I did start to read it though because you are my boss and told me to read it. I have related to it. It had a quote that I really liked. It said an ounce of action is worth a ton of theory. Again, I am about taking action. What are we going to take away from this book to our team of co-nerds to help us go forward?J: You start with a 12 week plan, E: Spoiler alertJ: It is in the title it isn’t a spoiler Erick. E: Fine, back to the takeaway.J: Start with the end in mind. At the end of the 12 weeks, what do you want to have achieved? For example you may want to have a personal goal of losing 10 pounds, and a business goal of closing $100,000 in new business.E: We have all made new years resolutions. What is the difference?J: The difference is it is 12 weeks and not a year. You need to check off 85% of the checklist items on your list, and you will be wildly successful. The way you do it by make them specific and measurable, state the want in a positive over negative statement, ensure they are realistic, assign accountability, and be time-bound.E: I’d like to have a follow up episode. Aired soon, explaining how we used this book to help us actually move the needle. By my calculations it’s Friday afternoon, and I have worked 12 weeks already this year. Is it time to go home after this?J: well i hope you’ve worked more than 12 weeks already this year….E: Fair enough on to editing... until 5.J: Thank you for listening to this episode, the first in our mega series. This is an episode of Crush It Mondays.  Each week, I'll bring to you an inspiring message, habit, or contemplation to get your week off to a powerful start.  In this week's episode, I want to talk about how our thoughts affect our emotions, and how it can alter the consequences of a situation. Listen Now I was prepping for a new format of a speech that I just had the opportunity to give at the Inspired Your Ride event in Nampa, ID.  I have my usual topics I love to discuss, but I came across the ABC Model in Cognitive Behavioral Psychology.  I often think about and discuss the importance of being aware of emotions.  It's hard sometimes... sometimes you feel disrespected and get angry, sometimes someone says something that makes you feel embarrassed.  And maybe you say or do something that you wish you hadn't. In this model, we are going to break down a situation into A,B,Cs. Let's start with A. A is the adversity that you are experiencing. It's something that happened to cause you stress, make you worry, or just cause an emotional response. B is the belief about what happened.  It could be why we think it happened, what we think will happen next or even a combination.  It's our interpretation of the adversity or event.  Often times, due to this belief, we will create limiting beliefs or negative self-talk. C is the consequence of the belief.  It is your behavior like acting out, excessive rumination, yelling at someone, feeling guilt or shame. D is the disputation of the belief. Asking yourself- is the belief true?  Can you change your irrational belief? E is the New Effect of challenging and changing your belief.  Without considering this model, many of us may think that the adversity actually causes the behavior or consequence.  The gist of it is that the adversity does not actually cause emotion, but our beliefs about that emotion is what causes the behavior. The key to putting this to use is actually noting and even writing down when you've had a strong reaction or emotion to something.  You can decode what causes you to be reactive and learn how to challenge your beliefs. I'll start with a very basic example that applies to bike racing, and then I'll give a more inflammatory example. Okay... so I did a 6 day race in Spain last year in February.  The expectations everyone had was that it would be sunny and warm- a nice escape from winter.  If you follow my instagram, you've probably seen a photo from this race.  It was sunny for one or two days and then the rest of the race had torrential rain.  So much so that they ended up canceling the later stages (which I actually found disappointing, but realized that safety for those not prepared is a real issue).  So what happened? I wake up and it's cold and pouring rain.  Adversity.  Of course I would rather ride in nice weather. So, here is one scenario: A: it's cold and raining, and I have to race my bike. B: in this case, the belief is rooted in what we think will happen next.  I'm worried I'm going to be cold and miserable or it's going to be slippery and I'm going to crash. C: I'm really grumpy and dreading the start. I start going down the rabbit hole of negativity telling myself I didn't come all the way to Spain to ride in the rain, it always rains on me when I try to go somewhere warm, I'm dreading how horrible it will be.  My bike is going to get messed up. I really don't want to start.  I shut down mentally and given up. I have already lost before I get to the start line.  I probably perform poorly as a result. Okay, so now let's challenge that belief. - our disputation: We can't change A. D: It's raining... what else could this mean?  I change my self-talk. It's going to be an adventure, I'm going to get better at wet riding, it's going to be a stand out day I'll never forget, it's an opportunity to build camaraderie. Today will make me tougher for next time. I'm going to choose to have fun. New Effect: I go to the start line pumped, mentally ready for anything. I've accepted that yes, it will be cold. It will be wet, but I don't care. I'm still going to give it my all.  Result? I have an amazing day and even get a good result. I've been through scenarios like these so many times that it's almost autopilot.  My ABC was actually the disputation and new effect because I've worked on it over time. Ok, so what about off the bike?  Let me think of something stressful. A: You send an important email expressing an opinion to your boss but it's been 48 hours and you haven't heard back. B: You believe you offended your boss. You wind yourself up into thinking maybe you're going to get fired. You feel angry and disrespected that he didn't write back when this was clearly a big deal to you. C: When he does write back or you see him in the hall, you act standoffish and pissy or you act defensive when questioned about anything. D: Ask yourself - could there be other reasons he isn't writing me back?  Is he on vacation? Did he get the email? Can I send another email asking if he got it before I fly off the handle?  Was the email I sent actually grounds for getting fired?  You realize you feel anxious because you never get feedback from your boss and don't know if he is happy with your work. E: You realize you were just worried about what could happen, but your worries were not based on any facts.  You calm down and act more appropriately. Maybe you even have a separate conversation with your boss to get more feedback on how you're doing. There are so many scenarios you can apply the ABCs to, but finding your patterns and also being honest with yourself about your beliefs are the keys to changing self-limiting, negative situations into more useful ones. Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatte are PhD researchers who have developed this model even further by classifying some common belief-consequence connections.  At first, it might be easier to look at the emotion first to decode beliefs.    If you really want to geek out about this, pick up their awesome book - The Resilience Factor.

The mysteries surrounding these recordings continues but it seems we are starting to gain ground on figuring out some of the component parts. In this week's episode we are presented with the long-winded, sometimes rambling explanation of what the speaker calls the "parts of man." From the molecule to the gonad it seems as if all of experienced reality is explained in a way that explains nothing at all. Yet, upon listening to this recording we find the speaker mentioning a representation of "God" which is referenced as "E"; this in turn takes us back to the mysteries presented in Episode 3 "He Knows All About You" where we find the words "He" and "E" being used interchangeably. The only markings on the reel is a piece of masking tape with reads, December 4th 1952 and it just so happens that in 1952 is a significant date to answer some of the mysteries we've been wondering about. Also made more interesting are the recordings of channeling sessions found in Reel Lost Episodes 1 and 2 which were made in Arizona and this too perhaps helps to answer, or perhaps deepen, some of the questions which have been asked by listeners. These reels are long and winding but perhaps some answers are coming forth. In my comments after the recordings I reveal the startling facts about what you will have just listen to in this episode.
