See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In "Via Francigena: Slow Travel, History, and Self-Discovery on Foot," host Annie Sargent chats with Olivier Andrieu about his incredible 100-day journey along the Via Francigena. Olivier, a former corporate sales director, decided to quit his job and walk from Canterbury, England, to Rome, Italy. He wanted a fresh start and a challenge, and the Via Francigena provided both. Listen to this episode ad-free Olivier shares the highs and lows of his adventure. He walked an average of 25 kilometers per day, staying in convents, monasteries, and Airbnbs along the way. He met people from all over the world, discovered hidden historical gems, and immersed himself in the beauty of slow travel. Olivier's journey took him through England, France, Switzerland, and Italy, offering a rich tapestry of landscapes and cultures. One of the highlights of Olivier's journey was the historical discoveries he made. He learned about a young World War I soldier whose name was engraved in a church near his home. He visited the statue of Rodin in Calais and discovered convents just an hour's drive from his home that he had never seen before. These discoveries added depth and meaning to his journey, connecting him to the history and culture of the places he visited. Annie and Olivier also discuss practical tips for anyone considering a similar journey. Olivier recommends a 35-liter backpack and high-quality gear. He used Akileine Nok cream to prevent blisters and had minimal injuries throughout his journey. His packing tips and advice on finding accommodations are invaluable for anyone planning a long-distance walk. In the magazine segment, Annie critiques The New York Times' "36 Hours in Toulouse" article, emphasizing the importance of experiencing the city beyond a quick checklist. She also dives into the intricate work behind Paris's Christmas windows and updates listeners on the success of free-flow tolling on the A13 motorway. If you love travel stories, historical adventures, or are dreaming of exploring France on foot, this episode is for you. When it comes to John Carpenter's iconic franchise, Halloween, most people may be familiar, in the abstract, with the name Moustapha Akkad as his name is the first to appear in the opening credits for every movie. What fans of the series may not be familiar with is how integral Moustapha was to bringing the story of Michael Myers to life, producing all 8 original movies, even after John Carpenter, himself, left the series. To celebrate Halloween, Brian Santana joins me to talk about the life of Moustapha Akkad, the man born to a customs officer in Syria, who came to Hollywood to bring the story of Islam to life on the big screen. From his movie, The Message, to becoming the silent force behind one of the horror genre's greatest franchises, Moustapha Akkad's life was rich with creativity until his violent death at the hands of suicide bombers in Amman, Jordan. This is the story of his life and his enduring legacy, honoring the man who was so pivotal in making Michael Myers and the season what it is today. Get A Murder On Campus: The Professor, The Cop, and North Carolina's Most Notorious Cold Case hereCheck out Chapter 91 with Brian and Cameron Santana hereCheck out Chapter 105: Summer's Almost Gone with Brian Santana and J.T.

On December 15, 1997, ten-day-old Delimar Vera died in a tragic housefire when the Philadelphia home of Luz Cuevas and Pedro Vera caught fire unexpectedly. After a brief investigation, the fire department identified a faulty heater as the cause of the fire and deemed the baby's death an accident and claimed that the girl's remains had been completely destroyed in the blaze. Luz Cuevas was skeptical of their explanation and struggled to accept her daughter's death.Six years after the fire, Luz was at a party where she ran into Pedro's cousin, whom she hadn't seen in several years. The woman, Carolyn Correa, had with her a little girl named Aaliyah, whom she claimed was her daughter, though Luz didn't remember her having children or being pregnant six years earlier. Even more suspicious was that six-year-old Aaliyah bore a striking resemblance to Luz herself and she couldn't shake the feeling that Aaliyah was in fact her own supposedly dead daughter, Delimar. Had Luz Cuevas been right all along? Had Delimar somehow managed to survive the fire? And if so, why was she now in the custody of a strange woman she hadn't seen in six years?Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBenson, Clea, and Rusty Pray. 1997. In this episode , Zhibing (Tony) Li, the Vice President of Canaan Inc., provided insights into the company's mission and roadmap for developing innovative Bitcoin mining solutions.Canaan, a leading manufacturer of ASIC miners, is focused on transforming the future of Bitcoin mining through improved energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. As Li explained, the company's goal is to not only optimize the performance of its mining hardware, but also find ways to better utilize the byproduct heat generated by the mining rigs."Our mission is about smart efficiency and better lives," Li stated. "We want to see Bitcoin miners become almost 95% heaters, where the majority of the electricity consumed is converted into usable heat that can be repurposed."To achieve this, Canaan is exploring innovative cooling solutions that capture the heat from its miners and redirect it for applications like greenhouse heating, room heating, and even swimming pool heating. The company is also working with customers who leverage renewable energy sources like solar to power their mining operations. In terms of hardware roadmap, Li highlighted Canaan's recent releases of the A13, A14, and A15 miners, each iteration boasting improved power efficiency. The latest A15 model, for example, achieves a power draw below 20 joules per terahash, a significant improvement over previous generations.Looking ahead, Canaan is committed to continued research and development to push the boundaries of mining efficiency and sustainability. By transforming the energy-intensive nature of Bitcoin mining, the company aims to not only benefit its customers, but also contribute to a greener, more environmentally-conscious crypto ecosystem.
