Erin Dollar is on the podcast to talk about Cotton & Flax, her collection of handmade textile home goods. We chat about her unique aesthetic, her creative process, and her line of fabrics with Robert Kaufman. Erin prioritizes sustainability in her creative business and this year she is striving to connect with the creative community in a deeper way.
Erin Dollar is the designer and maker behind Cotton & Flax. With a background in fine art printmaking, Erin brings a simple, modern aesthetic vision to Cotton & Flax, which she founded in 2012. After studying fine art printmaking at UC Santa Cruz, Erin continued her studio practice and produced artworks on paper in Portland, Oregon. She began a series of experimental printmaking projects on textiles in 2010, and spent two years refining her aesthetic vision and perfecting printing processes before founding Cotton & Flax as a permanent home for her designs. With Cotton & Flax, Erin approaches textile design as a blend of fine art and fine craft. By using traditional methods to print each textile piece, Erin hopes to share her love of printmaking, and to promote greater public interest in owning unique, handmade home goods. One of my favorite topics of conversation with Erin was about the tug and pull of transparency around your business. On one hand Erin sees a huge importance in sharing the process of her business with her customers or fans, allowing them to see the inner workings of the business that can make them feel more connected. But Erin is also not one to make things all about her. In fact she’d rather make most of it about her work, products, and what she’s looking to accomplish on a bigger scale. Social media has certainly created a borderline expectation of revealing your personal life or personality to market your brand. Something that can work great if done well, but not all people are interested in giving up that type of privacy. Erin is firmly in the camp of finding ways to be authentic that work for her. Dictating how she reveals that personal transparency is something very important for her, and can also be a great asset. It’s a fantastic reminder that the most “popular” way is not always the best way for you or your business. And usually what’s best for you will always be the right choice in helping your business thrive. Do you enjoy the process or the end product more? How has marketing and advertising changed as social media platforms have changed? Do you ever struggle with being genuine vs being trendy? What’s a word you would use to describe your work and what you’re trying to get across? In This Episode, You Will Learn About: What’s special about running a product based business The slow natural process of Cotton and Flax The importance of sharing the process How to be successful without making it all about you in this day and age Finding ways to be authentic that work for you Music Composed by John Zarcone

ON TODAY’S EPISODE: Cotton & Flax’s product offerings What motivated Erin to start Cotton & Flax How she came up with the name when she decided to re-brand How the collaboration with Robert Kaufman came about and why she chose to work with them How she crafted her licensing pitch Considerations smaller companies should take into account when looking at a partnership with a larger company Red flags when it comes to contracts Flat rate compensation versus royalty compensation Brand strategy when co-marketing your products with a larger company How diversifying her income has allowed her to feel more confident in her ability to be self-employed What she would do differently on her next licensing deal How Erin defines success in her business The advice she would give to someone starting out in a product-based business KEY TAKE-AWAYS: “Cotton & Flax was a weird experiment that got out of control. It was almost completely accidental.” - Erin Dollar “I wanted to explore working with manufacturers who have that expertise, have that ability to scale up and really create a quality product but without having to do it all myself.” - Erin Dollar “Thinking about the way that I could craft a pitch that would be appealing to their end use customer was really important.” - Erin Dollar “It has to be a blend of the strength of your work and your ability to get that message across in an effective way.” - Erin Dollar “It's really about that partnership. It's not, ‘What can I get out of it?’ It's, ‘How can we work together to have a successful collaboration?’” - Erin Dollar “If you don't feel comfortable looking over legal documents and really feel like you can understand those documents, get someone to help you” - Erin Dollar “Licensing has been a way for me to really grow my brand beyond my own product line while holding onto the rights to my work to be able to use in other ways.” - Erin Dollar “If you're not comfortable with what's in the agreement, ask for more of what you want. Don't be afraid to speak up.” - Katie Hunt “The diversification in income is something that's really helped me to feel more confident in my ability to be self-employed.” - Erin Dollar “Success to me means freedom to do the type of creative work that I want to do.” - Erin Dollar “I feel like we're all our own worst critics. We need to get ourselves out of that mindset and give ourselves more credit for the amazing things we're doing.” - Katie Hunt “Having a network of folks that you can turn to who care about you and want to see you succeed is so vital.” - Erin Dollar LINKS: Website: https://cottonandflax.com/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/cottonandflax Instagram: http://instagram.com/cottonandflax Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/cottonandflax Twitter: http://twitter.com/cottonandflax Ethical Pricing Guidelines Handbook for Designers -- new 2018 version available for presale here. In today's episode Erin shares her definition of success, her fear about finding fellow handmade shop owners when she moved to Los Angeles, CA, why meeting other small business owners is so important and so much more. "For me feeling successful is feeling like you're moving in the right direction or feeling like you are making progress. Being able to look in the rearview mirror and say, oh you know, I've gotten a lot done. Even just today or this month. Those small moves forward build into something a lot bigger." Erin shares why she thinks it is so important NOT to compare yourself, or your business to others. This is something we all need to be constantly reminded of. "Don't compare your business and your life with the perception of what you think others quality of life is." While Erin is a bit more introverted than most may think she shares why owning your business means you need to be more of an extrovert and why making connections, networking, and collaborating is good for your your business. "When you're running a business you have to be more extroverted. You have to be willing to kind of network and connect with other people in your community and in your field."
