Josh Henderson is the CEO of Bonnet Springs Park in Lakeland, Florida. His career path spans the for-profit attractions world, starting as a lifeguard and expanding through roles across water parks and major operators like Six Flags and Great Wolf Lodge, along with leadership in privately funded public parks. Today, he leads a nonprofit natural attraction designed to deliver a high-quality experience without a gate fee, supported by donations and mission-driven revenue. In this interview, Josh talks about being a student of the industry, community dictating the business model, and emerging natural attractions. Being a student of the industry “I think being a student of the industry is starting out in one particular sect and then continuing to move on, and try and learn as much about each discipline as I can, really served me well and helped me grow in my career.” Josh frames his growth as a willingness to expand beyond his original lane. Early on, he was convinced aquatics was his forever path, but as his interests evolved, he leaned into learning disciplines he once avoided, such as food and beverage. That mindset now shows up in how he spends time in outlets, looks for new revenue opportunities, and stays curious about parts of the business he doesn't claim to have mastered. He also shares how he learned by putting himself in rooms where he wasn't the expert: “going into the uncomfortable situations where you're not the smartest person in the room, and and being humble enough to accept that.” Conferences, peer conversations, and surrounding himself with specialists became his playbook for continuous learning, especially in fast-changing areas like marketing. Community dictating the business model “We've allowed the community to dictate part of our business model.” Bonnet Springs Park wasn't designed in a vacuum. The founders conducted focus groups and asked residents what they wanted most. One clear answer shaped a major revenue and experience driver: an event venue that could host hundreds, where people could choose their own caterer. That choice reflects a deeper clue about the park's role: it's meant to serve community needs, not just operator preferences. That same philosophy shows up operationally. Josh describes a difficult mindset shift from maximizing yield to creating shared opportunity, like bringing in authentic food trucks for festivals even when it hurts his margins: “when you're a community park and you're doing something for the betterment of the community, that means giving somebody else a chance to make a dollar as well.” In his view, the park succeeds when the community feels ownership, champions the mission, and participates in sustaining it. Emerging natural attractions “It barely existed when I got into it back in 2017.” Josh positions Bonnet Springs as part of a growing sector that blends nature, placemaking, and attractions-grade operations. He calls it something you almost have to see to understand: a free park that aims to deliver “a paid level experience for free,” with immaculate restrooms, interactive exhibits, and accessibility features like a free internal tram system so guests with mobility challenges can fully enjoy the property. He also links this sector's growth to professionalization: daily inspections, strong documentation, and applying paid-attraction standards to a free environment because attendance and wear-and-tear are so intense. The opportunity, he suggests, is for leaders to think of the attractions world as an umbrella where “good business is good business,” and where creating “family experiences” can look different than building roller coasters while still delivering the emotional outcomes the industry is known for.   Josh shared that people can learn more at BonnetSpringsPark.com. If authoritarians seek to dictate the global agenda while liberal democracies at least partly resist, could this lead to conflicts or even wars? The end of the last century brought about what scholars have called a “unipolar moment.” With the fall of the Soviet Union, liberalism lost its enemy on the global stage, which led the United States to try to establish an international liberal order by promoting liberalism transnationally. This latter approach has not only been harshly criticized for often being executed hypocritically and sometimes causing disastrous wars, but also ultimately seems to have failed. While Cold War restorationism might be dangerous and mistaken, today's world again features different authoritarian global powers, with the U.S. seemingly on the path to becoming one itself. Moreover, while democracy promotion by Westernliberal states is deteriorating, scholars have argued that authoritarian powers are increasing their collaboration on theglobal stage to extend authoritarian rule across space and time. In this conversation, Professors Alexander Dukalskisand Alexander Cooley argue that the project to spread liberalism around the world has caused a snapback, in which authoritarian regimes aim to capture and repurpose the actors, tools, and norms once created by liberal democracies for their own ends. Their book, Dictating the Agenda: The Authoritarian Resurgence in World Politics, was published byOxford University Press in September 2025.

Following the end of the Cold War, the world experienced a remarkable wave of democratization. Over the next two decades, numerous authoritarian regimes transitioned to democracies, and it seemed that authoritarianism as a political model was fading. But as recent events have shown, things have clearly changed. Based on their new book Dictating the Agenda, Alexander Cooley and Alexander Dukalskis reveal how today's authoritarian states are actively countering liberal ideas, advocacy surrounding human rights and democracy across various global governance domains. About the Speakers: Alexander Cooley is the Claire Tow Professor of Political Science and Vice Provost for Research and Academic Centers at Barnard College, Columbia University. From 2015-21 he served as the 15th Director of Columbia University's Harriman Institute for the Study of Russia, Eurasia and Eastern Europe. Professor Cooley's research examines how international actors have influenced the governance, sovereignty, and security of the post-Communist states. In addition to his academic publications, Professor Cooley's commentaries have appeared in Foreign Affairs, New York Times, and Washington Post and he has testified for the US Congress, UK Parliament and the Parliament of Canada. Alexander Dukalskis is associate professor in the School of Politics & International Relations at University College Dublin. His research and teaching interests include authoritarian politics, human rights, and Asian politics. He is also a frequent expert commentator in national and international media on these themes. From 2022-2024 he directed UCD's Centre for Asia-Pacific Research. He is the author of two previous books, Making the World Safe for Dictatorship (Oxford University Press, 2021) and The Authoritarian Public Sphere (Routledge, 2017), and academic articles in several leading journals.

There's snow day like the present, am I right? You are granted the opportunity to spend quality time with the people you love when you are snowed in. You get the chance to build the moments that will later become the memories you all will look back on. Are you going to store it in your mind as an inconvenience or a lucky break for you and your family? Today is the only day you are this exact age. The same goes for your partner and children, they are only 8 years and 204 days old for this day only. The chance to do that special thing is only guaranteed for today if you choose to do the things that are needed to be done in order to make that thing truly happen, today. Soon is always too soon when the day it can no longer happen inevitably arrives. Death is a certainty for every single living thing. Tomorrow is not promised to us, no matter what we tell ourselves in an effort to comfort and fill the void. We arrive to a point where we wish we had another day, yet we sit in a current reality where we don't even utilize the days that we currently do have. What if we actually maximized, not just utilized, all the time we have in a day? Why should you have to sacrifice the important things that are so personal just to reach a goal? Have you re-evaluated your goals accordingly to make sure meeting them still aligns with other goals and priorities you may have developed since you set those goals in the first place? It is natural for your goals to shift as you grow. It is okay to outgrow a previous goal, it's less okay to quit on a goal just because you find it hard. Most times, you will find yourself growing the most when you are uncomfortable and find it a challenge to accomplish something you really want.You need to find a balance when you don't know what it is you need. You have to focus on what you really want, yet be able to step back and recalibrate based on what else is developing and going on around you. The richness of time is what truly makes an individual wealthy. Dictating and determining how you spend your time and who you spend it with is power you have all for yourself to control. Make sure your target is still what is most important to you in the present moment and not just something you wanted in the past. We can't chase yesterday, all we can live is today.
