Building a design system is the easy part—getting your team to adopt it is the real challenge. We dive into the hidden elements that make design systems truly successful. What if the real blocker to your design system isn't tooling or design, but trust? This week, I talk with Justin Crews, a senior product designer with a background in film, systems thinking, and complex enterprise UX. We dig into what it actually takes to build design systems that people want to use, not just systems that look good in a pitch deck.Justin shares hard-won lessons from his consulting and in-house roles, where he has helped scale multi-product systems. We discuss the mindset shift from dictating to documenting, and why building alignment across teams is more important than enforcing rules. One of my favorite insights: your design system isn't a product—it's a process. If your components are collecting dust or you've hit a wall with adoption, this episode gives you the strategy and language to rethink what design systems are really for. Hit play and learn how to build systems people actually want to use.Topics:• 02:35 – The Challenge of Design System Adoption• 04:39 – Understanding the Role of Design Systems• 08:17 – When to Start Building a Design System• 18:41 – Documenting vs. Dictating in Design Systems• 24:58 – Managing Stakeholder Expectations• 28:24 – Building a Design System from the Ground Up• 40:13 – Building Team Adoption for New Tools• 40:57 – Creating Designer-Friendly Components• 41:47 – Championing and Showcasing the System• 44:22 – Stakeholder Management and Engagement• 46:42 – Measuring Success of Design SystemsHelpful Links:• Connect with Justin on LinkedIn• justinnn.com---Support our sponsors!Ok web designers. Roger Kiska, Legal Counsel to the Christian Legal Centre, spoke with Martin Stanford about the high-profile and seminal legal case of sacked Christian school assistant, Kristie Higgs. They discussed just before the Court of Appeal handed down its judgment on Wednesday, 12 February. Culminating a six-year legal battle, supported from the beginning by the Christian Legal Centre, the judgment would shape the law for years to come on free speech and freedom to express faith in the UK. In 2019, Mrs Higgs was sacked for gross misconduct by Farmor's Secondary School in Gloucestershire, and had her Christian beliefs compared to Neo-Nazism, for two Facebook posts. There's snow day like the present, am I right? You are granted the opportunity to spend quality time with the people you love when you are snowed in. You get the chance to build the moments that will later become the memories you all will look back on. Are you going to store it in your mind as an inconvenience or a lucky break for you and your family? Today is the only day you are this exact age. The same goes for your partner and children, they are only 8 years and 204 days old for this day only. The chance to do that special thing is only guaranteed for today if you choose to do the things that are needed to be done in order to make that thing truly happen, today. Soon is always too soon when the day it can no longer happen inevitably arrives. Death is a certainty for every single living thing. Tomorrow is not promised to us, no matter what we tell ourselves in an effort to comfort and fill the void. We arrive to a point where we wish we had another day, yet we sit in a current reality where we don't even utilize the days that we currently do have. What if we actually maximized, not just utilized, all the time we have in a day? Why should you have to sacrifice the important things that are so personal just to reach a goal? Have you re-evaluated your goals accordingly to make sure meeting them still aligns with other goals and priorities you may have developed since you set those goals in the first place? It is natural for your goals to shift as you grow. It is okay to outgrow a previous goal, it's less okay to quit on a goal just because you find it hard. Most times, you will find yourself growing the most when you are uncomfortable and find it a challenge to accomplish something you really want. You need to find a balance when you don't know what it is you need. You have to focus on what you really want, yet be able to step back and recalibrate based on what else is developing and going on around you. The richness of time is what truly makes an individual wealthy. Dictating and determining how you spend your time and who you spend it with is power you have all for yourself to control. Make sure your target is still what is most important to you in the present moment and not just something you wanted in the past. We can't chase yesterday, all we can live is today.

On one hand: Sex and gender are beautiful ways to express our individuality and to relate to each other within a wide spectrum of the human condition. On the other hand: Dictating sex and gender norms is senseless, arbitrary, and ultimately dangerous. Expectations of so-called “masculine” and “feminine” traits are promoted by idiots. Trans rights are opposed by bigots. Binary models are unscientific, thinly veiled hate disguised as innocent ignorance. The whole pile of BS is shoveled by cranks, bullies, bigots and morons without a leg to stand on. They are wrong, stupid, and mean. www.charlesbursell.com

The fifth limb of Patanjali's eightfold path of yoga, is Pratyahara. Pratyahara is an important bridge between the external focus of the previous limbs of yoga, such as asana (postures) and pranayama(breath exercises) to the more advanced practices of dharana(concentration) and dhyana (meditation). Pratyahara literally means withdrawing from the senses, to gain control over the senses to bring about calmness, peace and stillness. Prati meaning “against” or “withdraw”, and ahara meaning “food” or referring to anything we take in from the outside. Pratyahara also helps to provide an understanding of how much the mind is influenced by sensory input, imprisoned by the senses. Dictating our thoughts and feelings in ‘feeding' it leading it to be trapped in the Kleshas, mental/emotional afflictions that continue the wheel of suffering. Our practice is to stop feeding the mind the things that keep it ignorance of it's true nature, stuck in ignorance, attachment, aversion, egotism and fear. Encouraging the mind in a kind way to turn inwards and use the senses to be of service to the pursuit of practice, gaining mastery over external influences and allowing the practitioner to connect with their inner world, thereby creating optimal conditions for self-realisation. Do you remember your experience in school? There are so many issues and gaps in our education. Now, as our children grow up and step into the world, the parent's role in our children's education is even more important. Yet, many of us blindly trust an outdated and often restrictive educational system that may not truly serve our best interests. Costs are escalating, educational quality is questioned, and the true value of traditional schooling is under more scrutiny than ever.In this episode of We're Talking Shift Podcast, we're joined by Sam Sorbo for a conversation about education. As a passionate advocate for home education, Sam shares why sending your children to school for education is not the best choice, and why the parent's role is even more important todayv. She highlights the abuse and issues that are prevalent in the current educational system. Together, we explore the powerful alternative of home education.Tune in to the full episode and reevaluate what education means for your family. It's time to uncover the transformative potential of taking charge of your children's learning experience and educating them to be truly enlightened and empowered!Sounding the Alarm on Education"Your education informs the way you interact with the world. It informs everything you think, believe, and do," declares Sam Sorbo as she examines the current state of the education system. Sam Sorbo is known for her work in Hollywood as an actress, writer, and producer. Now, as an advocate for home education, she is determined to sound the alarm and empower families to embrace alternative approaches to learning.Sam shines a light on the pervasive issue of societal conditioning through the education system. Education, far from being a neutral tool for empowerment, has been utilized to stifle individuality and critical thinking. Drawing from personal experiences, she shares the journey of withdrawing her child from traditional schooling due to systemic flaws. Her message is clear: the education system, as it stands, is failing to fulfill its fundamental purpose of nurturing good humans."What education really has done is it has decimated education," Sam asserts. Unfortunately, there are still many who realize the shortcomings of education yet continue to support the same system. People have been conditioned to be comfortable rather than embrace the possibility of alternative approaches to education. It's time to wake up and realize these problems in education today. The Parent's Role in EducationWhat do you think is a “good school”? Is it one that excels in maths and sciences? "I realized that education really involves the whole child," Sam reflects. There is a need for a broader understanding of what true education is. It's not just about academics; it's about nurturing the overall character and values of the child. The traditional schooling systems are failing our children by stripping parents of their rightful authority and involvement in the educational process. This disconnection not only impacts the child's academic growth but also their personal development and family relationships. She points out a troubling trend where schools often usurp the authority of parents and guardians in their children's lives. It's important to remember that the parent's role in education is critical — we can't just be bystanders. Sam challenges parents to re-evaluate their roles and consider the profound impact their direct involvement can have on their children's futures.Abuse at the Hands of the Educational SystemAbusive is not often a word used to describe schooling. However, when you truly think about it, the abuse truly exists. Sam highlights that the very structure of our culture hates children, limiting their potential and failing in its role of educating them. She lists the little and big ways that the system can be abusive: Discouraging children's infinite and natural curiosity, Dictating children's schedules and actions, Unknown treatment of our children under teachers who are strangers, Training children to conform and not nourish their unique gifts and individuality, Teaching children that their value lies in how much money they can make, and Not nourishing children's spirituality and purpose, especially for young men.If the parent's role in education was a bigger one, we could protect our little ones. Children are born with an infinite capacity for curiosity, but the school environment often seeks to control this by imposing strict rules on when and how they can express their thoughts. Sam also shares a story about her daughter's early school experience that had led her to believe that she was stupid— this seemingly small moment had a significant emotional impact during their formative years, embedding a sense of inadequacy that took years to unlearn. Why Do People Shy Away From Home Education?Despite realizing all these holes and problems in the education system, many parents still hesitate to embrace home education. For some, it's the fear and lack of understanding of what this entails. Sam states, "They're selfish, they're scared they have no idea what they're talking about and they don't know how to do any research to figure it out.” This, coupled with a deep-seated reliance on traditional schooling, makes the prospect of home education daunting for many. Many people aren't sure if it's the parent's role to teach their children. However, Sam argues that with the right resources and a committed approach, parents can effectively guide their children's education. Beyond that, it's important to remember that education is more than just providing information. It's about cultivating curiosity, bringing out their inner gifts, and developing a good values system and characteristics that can help your child grow into a good human being. The Truth About the Lack of Value in College EducationWhy should you go to college? Sam expresses strong skepticism about the value of a college education, particularly in light of its soaring costs and uncertain returns. She criticizes the current higher education system for being a financial burden that often fails to prepare graduates for the real world. Loree and Sam discuss how many careers require a college degree. However, practical experience, vocational training, and self-directed learning can be more than enough. Sam urges potential students and their families to critically assess the true benefits of college. Don't simply adhere to societal expectations and decide if it truly is worth it.Protecting Your Children with Home EducationAs the episode ends, Sam talks about why home education is a critical educational choice and why the parent's role in their child's upbringing is important. She re-emphasizes the importance of protecting your children from abuse and issues in traditional schooling environments. “Just open your eyes because the world is full of opportunities for home education,” Sam advises, highlighting the safer, controlled environment that homeschooling can offer. Sam also talks about how home education can turn the focus to character focus and personal development. By taking charge of their children's education, parents have the unique opportunity to instill strong moral values and foster a sense of responsibility and integrity often overlooked in schools.Homeschooling also allows for a wonderful tailored educational experience that can adapt to the child's learning pace, interests, and emotional needs. This gives your children the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals ready to face the world with their unique gifts, innate curiosity, and strong values and purpose. We invite you to reflect on the parent's role in their children's education and futures. Are you fully aware of the impact of your educational choices on yourself or your child? Consider home education not just as an alternative, but as a vital approach to fostering a well-rounded, capable, and emotionally intelligent next generation. Explore more about essential education with Sam's books and resources on her website. As you make this educational shift for you or your child, keep your mind open to learning more. Tap into your inner child and be curious.Listen to more episodes on the We're Talking Shift Podcast to explore more topics on education and the alternatives to traditional schooling.
Teenagers and tweens are a challenge to any parent as they embark on their identity development. These are years filled with angst, joy, love and pain, as our kids develop physically, mentally, and emotionally. As we attempt to guide but not control, we struggle watching them make and maybe repeat obvious mistakes. We, so dearly, want them to make the right choices (in our mind) and respect their bodies. What can we do to help? Dictating to teens will never work. They are more likely to sabotage their own lives in order to prove that they are in control. The tighter parents squeeze, the more the adolescent rebels. I think of this stage of parenting as motivational interviewing.... and a literature review. Enjoy, Dr. M
It's not every day that someone's path to being a real estate professional first takes them through the Major League Baseball League. But that's the path of our guest today, Robert Lucido Jr. Part of how Robert Lucido Jr. made it on to an MLB team was that he cold called teams. This is unheard of in the world of baseball. But it gives you a sense of what Robert Lucido Jr. is all about: Knowing your worth and fighting for it.Today Robert takes us through how to dictate your worth in a highly competitive market where there is often a race to the bottom. First, focus on solutions to core problems, which right now is helping people get mortgages. Second, price to position effectively. Third, create value across dimensions. Fourth, stack value throughout the offer presentation. And fifth, take risk off the table for the client. Tune in to learn how to dictate your worth today.Resources:Check out the Millionaire Real Estate Agent PlaybookConnect with Jason:LinkedinProduced by NOVA MediaThis podcast is for general informational purposes only. For this episode, David is joined by Everett O'Keefe, a best-selling author who is the CEO of Ignite Press. Everett speaks about how he helps people to carry their message into the world, by authoring books. He explains why books are still the most powerful way to reach and touch others in a way that motivates them to act. Everett explains how someone who has never authored a book before can quickly do so. KEY TAKEAWAYS For centuries books have been connecting people and they are still an incredibly powerful medium. As we read, we fill in the blanks, and we co-create with the author. People support what they create. Reading requires you to engage actively, in a way watching a video doesn´t. Video and audio can easily turn into background noise. Most authors should voice the audio version. Authenticity matters. If you have a message to deliver you also have to have the willingness to put yourself out there. Choose one person and write for that person. They are your avatar. Being authentic is crucial. Dictating your book instead of typing it out is faster. With the added advantage that you naturally use the language you normally do. Language that resonates with the people you are trying to reach. Often, the content in blogs, podcasts and other material can quickly and easily be turned into a best-selling book. BEST MOMENTS ‘When someone's reading their book, it's like, they get to whisper in their reader's ear for hours.' ‘You will speak of course, most clearly to that avatar, but you're going to pull other people in.' ‘Having a purpose that is a direction enables you to retain that sense of contribution.' EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.ignitepress.us/ Free Copy of Everett´s book - https://mypodcastperk.com/ ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far, we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. The HBIC is in the room *snap* Being a boss is the way that introverts armor up so they can lead in their comfort zone. This expertise-forward strategy takes no excuses and harbors no fools. It's a persona that's highly entertaining in celebrities and provides sick dialogue in books and movies. IRL, it's another thing entirely. Adopting a no excuses attitude means you aren't willing to consider alternative approaches and feel attacked by dissent. Cracking the whip makes people walk away not stay in line. Going it alone sets you up to over commit and over perform. That lone wolf tactic is super exhausting and keeps you isolated from your team. Leaning into your expertise feels good to introverts. But as you wax poetic from your ivory tower, you aren't making authentic connections. Dictating isn't co-creating. Getting things done seems good - until you bulldoze over other people because you aren't giving the process room to breathe. Use questions, not criticism when discussing things that challenge your truths and expectations.
