A first-time renter got a surprise when their landlord allegedly tried to increase their rent because they were working from home. The tenant said they received a message from their landlord claiming they were “running a business” from the apartment and would have to pay more. The catch? They weren’t running a business at all… they were simply logging into their remote job, opening their laptop, and doing their work from home. Having only moved out of their grandmother’s house five months earlier, the renter was still figuring out the world of renting. They questioned the landlord, asking where in the lease it said working remotely was not allowed or that it justified a rent increase. After being asked to show the rule, the landlord allegedly stopped replying. People online were divided but many found the situation ridiculous, pointing out that working from home doesn’t automatically turn your apartment into an office.
