Episode 514 – A Drinking Problem is Totally Normal   Today we have Erin. She is 50 years old from Denver, CO and took her last drink on August 21st, 2023.   Registration for Dry January is now open. This is our most intensive course, and it's all about accountability. If you've been trying to quit drinking and haven't found success, it's most likely you're not surrounded by the right people or don't have community. Over 70% of our Restore Dry January participants report making it through January without taking a drink.   Café RE is the social app for sober people. We meet over 30 times a month online with our daily chats covering all different topics or specialty chats. If you're looking for accountability with others who are ditching the booze or have already done so, we'd love to have you.   [02:48] Thoughts from Paul:   Paul's opinion is that a drinking problem is a normal response to living in a culture that has completely lost its marbles. Most anthropologists believe that addiction is a modern phenomenon that stems from how we are living as a culture.   Eckhart Tolle in his book A New Earth says that what we have labeled as “normal” regarding our culture is actually completely insane.   Gabor Mate recently wrote The Myth of Normal about how our culture is toxic and right for addiction. According to Dr. Mate, addiction isn't a disease but a completely normal response to living in a fucked-up world.   Your drinking problem is not your fault. It is a response to a fractured world. You found a solution, a way to cope and it worked for a while. As Laura McKowen says, “it's not your fault but it is your responsibility”.   Listening to a sobriety podcast is part of you taking that responsibility.   [08:08] Paul introduces Erin:   Erin is 50 years old and divides her time between Colorado and Costa Rica. She has been married for 26 years and they have three college age children. Erin has a yoga business where she films YouTube videos, hosts retreats and does yoga teacher training.   Erin says her drinking was “normal” throughout high school and college. After graduating from college, she and her boyfriend moved to Maui and had jobs in the restaurant industry. She still feels her drinking was normal compared to her friends and lifestyle.   They soon moved back to Colorado, got married and started a family. Erin didn't drink throughout her pregnancies and didn't feel she was missing out initially. After moving into a neighborhood with other young families like there, drinking became a social activity, and Erin began to recognize she drank more and had a higher tolerance than others.   In her mid-forties, Erin started going through perimenopause and it was hard on her. She began using alcohol to self-medicate. Because of her job, she felt she was living out of alignment with her values. In spite of her drinking being a huge topic with her therapist, she was not ready to seek treatment. She attempted to quit on her own and says she white knuckled for five months before going back to drinking, quickly back to where she was before quitting.   When her husband and her friends tried to intervene, she was angry. They had already arranged everything, and Erin ended up going to rehab and in spite of her fear, ended up being a great experience.   Erin says they focused on healing the whole person, and once she realized for the first time that she was not alone, she felt the shame and fear lift. It was a small community, and they participated in a lot of modalities for healing. The education was a helpful part of the process.   Erin dove into books, podcasts, attended AA meetings, and joined Café RE which she considers her primary resource. Erin says her yoga practice has contributed to her healing.   Erin's parting piece of guidance: If you are thinking you can't do it, you can. It's possible and worth every single second of pain.   Recovery Elevator It all starts from the inside out. I love you guys.     RE merch Recovery Elevator YouTube Sobriety Tracker iTunes

Episode 494 - Discomfort = Good   Today we have Erin. She is 47 years old from Colorado and took her last drink on May 21st, 2022.   Sponsors for this episode:   Visit Better Help today to get 10% off your first month   Café RE – promo code OPPORTUNITY waives set up fee.   [02:53] Thoughts from Paul:   Paul shares with us “pain is followed by pleasure and pleasure is followed by pain”. Drinking to change the way you feel in order to feel better in the short term, will lead to a greater dip on the other side. Not only does drinking often come with a physical hangover, but the dopamine dip can be even worse.   The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter is a great book on discomfort. The main point of the comfort crisis is to show that society's relentless quest for pleasure is actually doing us a tremendous amount of harm.   The discomfort that comes with ditching the booze is like a different type of gym that is making you so much stronger. Studies show that it was not uncommon for our ancestors to run and walk more than 25 miles in a day. Today we call that a marathon. They called it going out for dinner. A good sobriety tool to add to your toolkit is seeking discomfort – both the physical and the mental.    Buddha said that life is suffering, and all attempts to avoid the suffering only create more suffering. Logging alcohol free days and leaning into the boredom and discomfort is incredibly healthy for you and is actually level 10 self-care, even though it hurts.   [09:57] Kris introduces Erin:   Erin lives in a small town in Colorado. She is a psychotherapist. She lives with her partner and two dogs. They enjoy all things outdoors; hiking, skiing, walking, going to the lake and she is fortunate to love her work as well.   Growing up in a small town in South Dakota, Erin says drinking was part of the youth culture. Her older siblings drank and made it sound like fun. The first time Erin drank, she blacked out, but doesn't recall it being a bad experience. She drank at parties in high school, but her drinking slowed down when she went to college.   Living in Boulder, CO, Erin enjoyed more outdoor activities instead of drinking heavily. Her roommate and she got the opportunity to go on tour with their favorite band a few times and Erin remembers that as being when drinking was fun. She was a music lover and while working in clubs she enjoyed the perk of free drinks and meeting the bands.   In her late 20s, Erin had a career change and was with a partner that drank a lot. She says she drank a lot with them and was able to maintain her job and her martial arts training. She was working with women that came from domestic abuse situations so in comparison, she thought she was doing alright.   Erin ended up leaving the martial arts community but began drinking with her work community. Everyone else was able to drink Friday night and be done, whereas Erin wouldn't stop until Monday. She started having withdrawal symptoms when the bender was over, but this wasn't enough to make her quit.   Erin would try moderation and kept her drinking to a minimum when with her boyfriend, but it was different when she was alone. It wasn't until a bender while pet sitting that her boyfriend saw her in really rough shape. He made her leave with him and the next morning, Erin asked to go to the hospital because she knew it was time to quit for good.   Once Erin quit, she focused on telling the truth and surrendering to the fact that she could no longer drink. Erin has leaned into community and is going to retreats. It gives her something to look forward to on her calendar.   Erin's favorite resources in recovery – podcasts and other people's stories   Erin's parting piece of guidance – there's a wisdom in patience, and simplicity. Do one or two things each day that are good for yourself. Sobriety is a journey and the brain is healing.   We are the only ones that can do this RE, but we don't have to do it alone. I love you guys.   RE on Instagram Recovery Elevator YouTube Sobriety Tracker iTunes

This episode was recorded on January 4th, 2024. Erin Pizzey, born in China with her twin sister Kate, settled in England after a childhood of frequent moves due to her diplomat father. In 1971, she opened the world's first women's refuge in Chiswick, London, and later established numerous shelters during the 1970s and 1980s. Erin became well-known for her court battles over overcrowded refuges and her appearances on top chat shows, earning a reputation as a crusader for the destitute. Her advocacy extended to squatting in properties to provide shelter. Erin brought domestic violence to public attention, compelling authorities to address the issue. She moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the 1980s after receiving death threats for highlighting female-perpetrated abuse, as detailed in her book "Prone to Violence." She returned to London in 1997 and advocated for male abuse victims, becoming a patron of ManKind Initiative and Families Need Fathers. In 2013, Erin joined the advisory board of A Voice for Men and appeared in the 2016 documentary "The Red Pill." In 2023, she was featured in "Erin: Beyond the Bruises." Erin authored several cult classics, including "Scream Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear" and "This Way to the Revolution: A Memoir." She believes domestic abuse is generational and not gender-specific, advocating for multi-generational therapy to break the cycle of violence.   Find more from Erin: Erin in Cassie Jaye's landmark documentary The Red Pill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irVB8b0zhQI Why I loathe feminism by Erin Pizzey: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1215464/Why-I-loathe-feminism---believe-ultimately-destroy-family.html Erin Pizzey documentary: http://film-directory.britishcouncil.org/erin-beyond-the-bruises Erin on family dynamics / the breakdown of the family: https://youtu.be/53Gmx_wfft8 Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7F4GFHI2oY   Connect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tammy.m.peterson Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TammyPetersonPodcast TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tammypetersonpodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tammy1Peterson Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/TammyPetersonPodcast

How do you bring your humanity to your podcast? Sharing your voice isn't always easy. Factor in the painstaking writing of your script or copy, all those edits and revisions, and some nerves about speaking into the mic, and even the most heartfelt story can wind up either flat and unemotional or encased in that “reporter voice” from the dawn of radio. Unlock some podcasting inspiration through this conversation with Erin Moon, a classically trained actor who has narrated more than 450 audiobooks. To deliver the sincere and evocative narration for which she's known, Erin centers her humanity in every character she adopts, embracing both the muse that first inspired the author and the physical reactions—the literal human responses—the writing evokes. Over the next few months, I'll be mixing in some of our earlier Motherhood Meets Medicine interviews with new episodes. These ‘best of' episodes are the most shared and listened to episodes of all time! Today's featured episode is an interview with Erin from Food Science Babe. If you ever get overwhelmed with grocery shopping and find it difficult to know if buying organic is actually worth it, then you're going to love this conversation. With so many labels claiming products are organic, non-GMO, hormone-free, and natural, it's hard to decide what is really best for us and our children. Not to mention, making the decision without breaking the bank. I am so relieved to get some real answers from Erin who is a chemical engineer and food scientist. You'll be shocked, and probably relieved, to hear what she says about the food industry and what healthy really means. Erin has a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of MN. She has worked in the food industry for 10+ years in both the conventional and natural/organic sectors as an Engineer/Food Scientist. Erin debunks a lot of misinformation about the food industry on her Instagram and Tiktok accounts @foodsciencebabe that I definitely recommend you check out. Listeners, I'm so pumped for this week's podcast guest.   If you're a long time listener of the show, or at least for the last year, you know that I feel so strongly about energy work. I had the opportunity to cross paths with Erin McGuire at the Empower Her Summit this year and knew I had to share her with this audience. Erin is a coach and energy healer through her business Pure Light Healing. And if you're not sure what that means, join me for an enlightening episode. Key Takeaways First things first. What is an energy healer? “I free people to be who they really are because trauma makes you out of survival- it makes you live out not out of who your true self is.” Erin emphasizes the importance of listening to your subconscious.  Erin says her younger self would “never in a million years” believe her life path, but that her life was changed by awakening to her inner sensitivity. Erin says that “yoga was her gateway drug” into the life of healing she leads today. She earned her yoga certification in 2010 and is a reiki master, reiki master teacher, and life coach. After studying theta brainwave healing for a few years, Erin reached a point where she just couldn't keep it to herself anymore. She started casually helping people and eventually built it into her career. Erin suffered from depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue, but did not find help in typical therapies. Doing deep conscious work, shadow work, and inner child healing brought her healing. A helpful visual: Erin says your subconscious is like a hoarder house, filled with old patterns and belief systems you've picked up in life. We might not even be aware of what we are holding onto that could be holding us back. Erin shares the connection between our thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and actions. Why are you procrastinating? How were you feeling that led you to procrastinate? What thought drove that feeling?  On manifestation, Erin says “Simply, just, we create what we think about.” And, "You will get more of whatever you focus on” Mentions The book Eat, Pray, Love Holistic Psychologist Nervous System Reset Program The book The Body Keeps The Score Connect with Erin Erin shares most frequently on Instagram and is also on Facebook and TikTok. Erin Michalski joins Yo today to remind us of the role American Ranchers play to feed the world safe beef. Erin's story is inspirational - she left her career in investment banking and living the good life in Connecticut to join the family business, ranching in Colorado at the Eagle Rock Ranch. A life she has embraced with joy and grace. This quote sums up Erin: “She Rides the Ranch so Wild and Free, A Cowgirl She Will Forever Be.” Here are some of the questions we explored: · How did you come to ranching? · How did you find you positioning in the direct-to-consumer business? · How is it working in a male-dominated industry? · What have you learned about teamwork? · What do you think about finding your purpose in life? Erin is definitely a “Girl, Taking the Lead!”: She began a direct to consumer effort with the focus we can have 100% confidence that the beef you are purchasing came from an animal that was raised with the highest humane standards in the industry. This is her TOP priority! Her cattle graze on 1,000s of acres at 9,000 feet, eating protein rich timothy grass, drinking mountain run-off water, and breathing pristine clean air. Plus her beef is pasture raised and grain finished. After harvest, her beef is dry aged for 21 days. The combination creates perfectly marbled beef with tremendous flavoring. No wonder her beef tastes so good!! Gotta say: I'm one satisfied happy customer! More about Erin: Erin is a Colorado Native who spent 17 years back East before moving home to pursue her current passion - promoting the western way of life. Erin is married and has 3 children. She calls Breckenridge, CO home and splits her time between the mountains and her Family cattle ranch. In her free time, Erin enjoys riding horses, skiing and hiking with her dog Willow. In this week's episode, I spoke with Erin Breeden about “imposter syndrome”, what it is and how it shows itself in different ways.  Her journey took her into a successful career in marketing and public relations. She worked in public relations agencies, as a marketing director and an editor-in-chief of a bridal magazine.  While she loved each industry, Erin couldn't find the job of her dreams that would use each skill set she had acquired.  She felt really stuck and wondered why she just wasn't happy in any of those roles that she loved and always feeling like an imposter. So she created it for herself, founding her own company, Blue Tide Creative, helping others tell their story and making sure their message matches their mission and get them out in front of their intended audience and most of all to be yourself because YOU ARE AMAZING!In this episode, you will specifically learn how to…Stop hiding who you are - quit saying “why me?” and trying to fit into a mold in your career that is outdated and frankly boring!Have confidence in yourself - learn to be your authentic self and not the person others expect, sit quietly and ask yourself what is it that you REALLY want.Get out of your own way - take the risk, stop believing in obstacles, the things that hold you back because “that's the way it has always been” or because someone said it has to be that way.Helpful link…Self-Talk Exercise More about Erin…Erin founded Blue Tide Creative, a strategic communications firm, in 2015. Show Notes/Brief Summary/Blog PostThis week's episode has a fantastic guest - motivational speaker, author, wellness activist, Stage 3 cancer survivor, wife, and mom - Erin Soto. Today, Erin graciously dives into her story and her fight with cancer, and we are just so excited to share her with you. As so many parents can relate to today, Erin got used to the hustle and bustle of life as a hamster on the wheel, but everything changed for her, and life came to a screeching halt in November 2019 when she received a Stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis. Erin knew that she needed to find a way to live beyond the crisis that she was just confronted with and took a deep, inward dive. “What does life look like as I face this fight? This week on Holy Sh!t We're Alive we're talking to Erin Monson. Now here's the thing about Erin… Erin and I used to date and we were almost engaged. If you know my story, you know that when my relationship with Erin ended, that was the start of some major self-work in my world… In this episode, Erin shares her journey of battling an eating disorder for a good part of her life. It started when her college tennis career ended and she found herself in the middle of a good old-fashioned identity crisis. “Who am I? What makes me happy? What should I be doing to make a living?” All of these feelings of uncertainty and LACK of control drove Erin to find control in her life. She learned that she could have control over how she ate. This turned into an eating disorder and body dysmorphia that came and went through different relationships and life events… This is when our stories collide and we found ourselves BOTH seeking external validation from the other person and that turned into a beautiful mess. Erin shares her story of hitting rock bottom and realizing that she didn't need to have complete control to live a happy life. I love Erin's approach to finding balance and happiness because she is REALLY good at the little things. She talks about finding happiness through breathwork, and journaling, and just BEING. Erin has an amazing business coaching men and women to feel better physically and learn to love themselves along the way. In Episode #012 of CrisisCast 2020 | Erin Baker Today on CrisisCast 2020 Erin Baker has locked herself at home in Michigan since coming back from Mexico 30 days ago. As a coach with a scientific and corporate background Erin works with clients on their mindset and helps them prepare for their next act so they can make an impact. In our chat today, Erin reflects on past personal crisis and how she is drawing strength from those experiences. While fully acknowledging the seriousness of the state of the world today, Erin also brings so much infectious energy and (if it’s not too much of an oxymoron) tangible hope for the future. My Guest: My clients are visionary leaders, entrepreneurs, and coaches who are ready to launch their next act - a startup, business, innovative product or service, or career - and make a difference in the world. They have a track record of success, nail every challenge that they take on, and on paper are a paragon of success. But they often find themselves... • Bored or burned out. They feel disconnected and out of touch with what really matters. • Feeling like something is missing. They wonder “is there something more than this?” • Noticing that the rush of achievement wears off quickly, and immediately asking “what’s next?” • Wanting to do something different, but despite their track record of success, are terrified that *this* time they will fail. • Wanting to make a more meaningful impact on the world, but unsure of where to start. Or they have an idea, but ask themselves “who am I to do that?” • With very few, if any, people they can talk with about this. If any of this rings true for you, you are not alone. Through my work, I have discovered that some of the most successful people in the world are bored, burned out, or disillusioned with the impact they are having on the world. Many people continue on, changing nothing, living in a world of what they *should* be doing rather than what they *want.* Discover… Finding strength through past traumas Why ignoring the online masses is a good thing What to do if this crisis has led to you longing to take your next step Connect with Erin Erin’s Website Feeling Pod-Curious? This week we're kicking of a three-part series on how social enterprises can partner with governments to achieve greater scale and impact. We're talking with Erin Worsham, Executive Director of the award-winning Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE) at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. Erin shares her views and insights from the Scaling Pathways research study around scaling impact through government partnerships. The Scaling Pathways study, of which Erin is the lead author, surveyed over 100 social enterprises to understand the hardest barriers and challenges encountered by social enterprises and gathered cross-cutting lessons and best practices to shed light on how to overcome those barriers and challenges. On this podcast, you will learn:  Why working with governments has been identified as one of the key challenges for scaling impact by social enterprises. The Scaling Pathways study focused on uncovering some of the best practices and lessons from 11 social enterprises across geographies and sectors, such as VillageReach, Partners in Health, Code for America, and Pratham, to name a few. Why as a first step, it is critical for social enterprises to set their vision for engaging with governments and define clear goals of the partnership and why funding from governments, while important is not among the key driving goals for social enterprises The 4 key government partnership goals and the roles that social enterprises need to play in meeting these goals: a) Clear the path: engaging with governments to seek informal permission or permits and avoiding potential barriers.  b) Outsourcing: having the government partners outsource the delivery of a certain product/ service through a contract. c) Adoption: working with the government partners to transition or transfer the management of a service or solution over a period. d) Change policy: influencing the government to change policies, allocate resources or change regulations Why social enterprises need to adapt their staffing based on the needs of the government partnership. Having local staff who understand the local context and who ideally have already existing established relationships with the governments, is critical to having a successful social enterprise-government partnership. Erin talks about specific examples such as WSUP, Village Reach that have adapted their staffing model to address local contexts, government relationship management, and leadership to influence policy change. Why it is important for social enterprises to know when to start engaging with government partners, i.e. start with a fully formed solution based on evidence that it works (building and proving the model first) or start with an idea of building together with the government? Build first or build together? Finally, we look at the risks and challenges that could become stumbling blocks for social enterprises while engaging with governments, such as slow pace of government, political and leadership change, corruption, decrease in impact, etc., and how should social enterprises deal with such challenges or mitigate the occurrences of such risks.
