How is mathematical knowledge recorded and preserved across generations? Contrary to the idea that mathematics itself is somehow ‘permanent', in this talk we will explore heritage-making in mathematics, that is the people, institutions, and material objects that can give mathematical ideas longevity. We will explore the heritage-making found in two very different types of French nineteenth-century libraries: those of famous mathematicians and those of secondary schools. We will especially focus on how the recording – and forgetting – of mathematical ideas is influenced by their publishing, political, and intellectual contexts.This lecture was recorded by Professor Caroline Ehrhardt on 8th October 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Caroline Ehrhardt is Professor of History of Science and Deputy Director of IDHE.S at Université Paris 8 professor in history of science at the Université Paris 8 (France). Her research concerns the history of mathematics in France and Europe (1789–1914). She has published on Evariste Galois, on Galois theory and on mathematics education.Caroline is currently coordinating a collective project funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, entitled ‘Heritage and patrimonialisation of mathematics, 18th-20th centuries'. Este programa lo hicimos en un martes y 13, el día que en España se suele asociar con la mala suerte, así que aprovechamos para hablar de momentos desafortunados en la ciencia. A todos nos suena que algunos descubrimientos científicos se han hecho de pura suerte, pero ¿qué cosas nunca llegaron a ocurrir por culpa de la mala suerte? Hoy os contamos dos de esas historias: el día que Charles Darwin se comió al animal que estaba tratando de descubrir y el caso de Guillaume Le Gentil, que recorrió todo el globo para observar un evento astronómico y se quedó con las ganas de verlo... ¡dos veces! Al final, muy brevemente, contamos también el desafortunado final de Evariste Galois, uno de los mejores matemáticos del siglo XIX. Cuando hablamos sobre Le Gentil mencionamos que fue Edmund Halley quien propuso observar los tránsitos de Venus para determinar la distancia entre la Tierra y el Sol. Halley fue un tipo realmente excepcional, que tuvo a lo largo de su vida muchas ideas brillantes, pero quizá su descubrimiento más notable fue... Isaac Newton. Aujourd'hui dans les Libébulles, on se demande c'est quoi le pardon, c'est quoi oublier, c'est quoi se souvenir et ce que ça nous fait à l'intérieur de nous... Ces cartes postales sonores ont été réalisées avec les élèves de CE1/CE2 de Valérie Vendrin, de l'école du Fresne-Camilly, les élèves de 3ème du collège Pierre Brossolette à Réhon, les enfants de la maison de l'enfance à caractère social "Le Renan", de Cormeilles en Vexin, Ayla, Lyna, Ismaïl, Noun Abdou qui ont participé au projet « radio philo » à Gennevilliers, les élèves de GS de Laurence Cantoia, de l'école Victor Hugo à Sevran, les élèves de 4ème d'Agathe Zentelin du collège Evariste Galois à Nanterre. La discussion sur le pardon a été menée après la lecture du texte d'Antonio Carmona Les hamsters n'existent pas publié aux éditions théâtrales jeunesse. Celle sur l'oubli a été faite dans le cadre des actions culturelles de la compagnie En attendant et Denis Lachaud. Celle sur les rêves a été faite autour du spectacle "Bagarre" de la compagnie Loba-Annabelle Sergent, d'après un texte inédit de Karin Serres. La discussion « c'est quoi n'importe quoi ? » a été faite en lien avec le spectacle de Pascal Parisot, dans le cadre du festival des rêveurs éveillés à Sevran. Ces cartes postales sonores ont été financées par Minute papillon, le Théâtre du champ exquis à Blainville sur Orne, Scènes et territoires à Maxéville, Points communs à Cergy, la Maison du développement culturel de Gennevilliers, le service culturel de Sevran et la cité éducative de Nanterre. Le montage de la carte « faut-il oublier ? » a été fait par Elodie Royer. Celui de la carte « c'est quoi n'importe quoi ? » a été fait par Julie Briand.
