His practice led him to work with a wide variety of legal and social cultures, including those of China, Iran, and Nigeria. He was active in the International Bar Association, where he served as chair of the Litigation Committee. Justice Koehnen is the author of Oppression and Related Remedies, which has been cited frequently by courts throughout Canada, including the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition, he has contributed to various books dealing with director and officer liability, privilege, and arbitration.Justice Koehnen was born to immigrant parents and grew up in modest circumstances in Toronto. He was the first of his extended family to attend university, earning a B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Toronto and a diplôme d'études approfondies in international economic law from the Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne). Dora Konomi is a partner at Walker Law in Toronto. She is a dedicated litigator with a passion for delivering practical, client‐focused solutions in civil litigation. Le 24 février 2022, la Russie lançait ce que le Kremlin continue d'appeler une « opération militaire spéciale » contre l'Ukraine. Quatre ans plus tard, la guerre s'est installée dans la durée, les lignes de front se sont figées par endroits, durcies ailleurs, et le conflit est devenu un fait structurant de l'ordre international. Cette guerre, elle ne se joue pas seulement sur le terrain militaire. Elle se joue aussi sur le terrain des mots, des images, des récits. Deux narrations radicalement opposées s'affrontent. Pour Kiev, il s'agit d'une guerre d'agression, coloniale, impériale, visant à nier l'existence même de la nation ukrainienne. Pour Moscou, il s'agit d'une guerre défensive, existentielle, provoquée par l'expansion de l'OTAN, destinée à « protéger » les populations russophones et à corriger ce que Vladimir Poutine considère comme une erreur historique majeure : l'indépendance de l'Ukraine. Derrière ces récits, des visions du monde. Derrière ces visions, une lecture de l'histoire. Et derrière cette lecture, un projet politique. Quelle conception de la Russie, de son identité, de son rapport à l'Empire et à l'Occident a conduit Vladimir Poutine à déclencher cette guerre ? Quel est le récit dominant produit par le Kremlin pour la justifier et pour en soutenir le prolongement ? Comment ces récits varient-ils selon les publics : opinion russe, pays occidentaux, Sud global, membres des BRICS ? Et surtout : comment distinguer un récit politique — toute guerre en produit — d'une entreprise de désinformation structurée ? Dans ce conflit, l'absurde semble parfois le disputer au fatal. Mais rien n'est laissé au hasard : la production du récit est organisée, institutionnalisée, stratégique. Car c'est bien au nom d'une vision politique et historique que Vladimir Poutine et quelques autres ont déclenché cette guerre. Le découpage arbitraire de territoires et l'exacerbation des tensions entre les différentes communautés par la tutelle coloniale française ouvrent la voie aux revendications de l'unité, à la révolte du Nord (1919-1921), à la Grande Révolte syrienne (1925-1927) ainsi qu'aux tendances autonomistes dans les régions de frontières et les périphéries du territoire syrien (Djezireh et Sandjak d'Alexandrette). Un mois après une opération américaine aussi spectaculaire que controversée, le Venezuela reste suspendu à un vertige politique inédit. Dans la nuit du 2 au 3 janvier 2026, au terme d'une opération militaire meurtrière violant toutes les normes du droit international, Nicolas Maduro et son épouse étaient exfiltrés de Caracas avant d'être transférés à New York où ils sont aujourd'hui détenus et jugés pour narcoterrorisme. Une opération dénoncée comme un « kidnapping » par l'intéressé lui-même et par ses soutiens qui y voient une volonté de l'administration Trump de tenter de décapiter le « chavisme », de s'emparer du pétrole et autres richesses de la République bolivarienne et aussi d'intimider l'ensemble de l'Amérique latine en lui montrant à quoi elle s'expose si elle ne se soumet pas. À Caracas, Delcy Rodriguez, propulsée présidente par intérim, tente de maintenir l'équilibre entre la rue chaviste, une opposition fragmentée et un partenaire américain désormais omniprésent. Elle promet une amnistie politique, libère des détenus et ouvre le secteur pétrolier, symbole d'un tournant majeur pour un pays qui possède les plus grandes réserves du monde. Le Venezuela demeure profondément divisé : certains saluent la chute d'un régime autoritaire, d'autres dénoncent une violation flagrante de la souveraineté nationale. Cette conférence invite à revisiter le paysage confessionnel syrien du XIIIᵉ siècle à la fin de l'époque ottomane à travers deux groupes : les chrétiens et les Kurdes, interrogeant le statut accordé aux chrétiens, les dynamiques internes de cohésion de ces populations ainsi que leurs relations avec les pouvoirs en place et le monde extérieur. Le XIIIe siècle est un moment de bascule démographique pour les chrétiens, comme le montre Bernard Heyberger, mais ce recul ne s'accompagne pas d'un effacement culturel, bien au contraire : leur créativité artistique et leur rayonnement intellectuel demeurent remarquables dans un contexte politique de plus en plus intransigeant vis-à-vis des non musulmans. How is mathematical knowledge recorded and preserved across generations? Contrary to the idea that mathematics itself is somehow ‘permanent', in this talk we will explore heritage-making in mathematics, that is the people, institutions, and material objects that can give mathematical ideas longevity. We will explore the heritage-making found in two very different types of French nineteenth-century libraries: those of famous mathematicians and those of secondary schools. We will especially focus on how the recording – and forgetting – of mathematical ideas is influenced by their publishing, political, and intellectual contexts.This lecture was recorded by Professor Caroline Ehrhardt on 8th October 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Caroline Ehrhardt is Professor of History of Science and Deputy Director of IDHE.S at Université Paris 8 professor in history of science at the Université Paris 8 (France). Her research concerns the history of mathematics in France and Europe (1789–1914). She has published on Evariste Galois, on Galois theory and on mathematics education.Caroline is currently coordinating a collective project funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, entitled ‘Heritage and patrimonialisation of mathematics, 18th-20th centuries'. Une partie de l'extrême-droite européenne était rassemblée, ce lundi 9 juin 2025, dans le Loiret (sud de Paris) à l'invitation du Rassemblement national. Aux côtés de Marine Le Pen et Jordan Bardella se trouvaient également le Premier ministre hongrois Viktor Orban ou encore le vice-président du Conseil des ministres italien Matteo Salvini. Objectif affiché : montrer l'union entre les droites populistes européennes après plusieurs scrutins qui ont vu se poursuivre leur montée en puissance. Curtis Roads creates and pursues research in music technology. He is Professor Emeritus of Media Arts and Technology (MAT) and in Music at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he also managed the Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology (CREATE). He studied composition at California Institute of the Arts and the University of California, San Diego and received a Doctorate from the Université Paris 8. A researcher at MIT for six years, he also taught at Harvard and the University of Naples "Federico Due." He was Editor and Associate Editor of Computer Music Journal (The MIT Press) from 1978 to 2000, and cofounded the International Computer Music Association (ICMA) in 1979. His album POINT LINE CLOUD was reissued in 2019 by Presto Records. His album Flicker Tone Pulse (2019) was published on DVD by Wergo (Schott Musik). Since the French Revolution of 1789, the absence of laws banning interracial marriages has served to reinforce two myths about modern France--first, that it is a sexual democracy and second, it is a color-blind nation where all French citizens can freely marry whomever they wish regardless of their race. Caroline Séquin challenges the narrative of French exceptionalism by revealing the role of prostitution regulation in policing intimate relationships across racial and colonial boundaries in the century following the abolition of slavery. Desiring Whiteness: A Racial History of Prostitution in France and Colonial Senegal, 1848-1950 (Cornell UP, 2024) traces the rise and fall of the "French model" of prostitution policing in the "contact zones" of port cities and garrison towns across France and in Dakar, Senegal, the main maritime entry point of French West Africa. Séquin describes how the regulation of prostitution covertly policed racial relations and contributed to the making of white French identity in an imperial nation-state that claimed to be race-blind. She also examines how sex industry workers exploited, reinforced, or transgressed the racial boundaries of colonial rule. Brothels served as "gatekeepers of whiteness" in two arenas. In colonial Senegal, white-only brothels helped deter French colonists from entering unions with African women and producing mixed-race children, thus consolidating white minority rule. In the metropole, brothels condoned interracial sex with white sex workers while dissuading colonial men from forming long-term attachments with white French women. Ultimately, brothels followed a similar racial logic that contributed to upholding white supremacy. Dr. Séquin earned a BA and MA in English and American Studies at Université Nancy 2, an MA in Women and Gender Studies at Université Paris 8, and her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. She has won a number of awards from a range of institutions including Best Paper Prize from the Council for European Studies' Gender and Sexuality Research Network for the article “Marie Piquemal, the ‘Colonial Madam': Brothel Prostitution, Migration, and the Making of Whiteness in Interwar Dakar”. But I want to call attention to her Edward T. Gargan Prize for the best graduate student paper presented on post-1800 history at the annual conference of the Western Society for French History.
