In this week's episode of Not Alone, Valeria sits down with lifestyle photographer, cookbook author, and content creator Chloé Crane-Leroux for an inspiring conversation about art, food, and finding balance in a world that never stops moving. Chloé opens up about her early years growing up in Montreal, always driven by a “five-year plan,” and a desire to create beauty. She shares her journey from the highs and challenges of the fashion industry to discovering a more soulful creative outlet in food photography and storytelling. Together, she and Valeria dive into burnout, creative ruts, and the pressures of the internet, while also exploring the rituals and meditations, like cooking, that ground her in joy. Chloé reflects on the vulnerability of sharing her life online, the profound loss that shifted her perspective, and why she no longer clings to rigid plans for the future. At its heart, this episode is a reminder that your life is your art and your canvas, and that creativity thrives not just in output, but in presence, connection, and growth. Send us a textWhat happens when you throw away your carefully crafted race plan and follow your intuition instead? For elite mountain runner Remi Leroux, it meant transforming a 15-race schedule into nearly 25 events across two continents in a single summer.Diving deep into his whirlwind season, Remi shares how his partnership with Brooks teammate Dan has pushed him toward spontaneity and risk-taking. Their contrasting personalities—Dan's high-energy spontaneity balanced against Remy's thoughtful approach—created the perfect dynamic for an unforgettable European racing campaign. From training camps in Les Houches to competing alongside the Brooks team at Golden Trail Series events and during UTMB week, Remy found himself surrounded by a professional team atmosphere that elevated his performance. The conversation explores Remi's victory at Cirque Series Cannon Mountain despite racing with a significant foot injury, his surprising 5th place finish at the hyper-competitive ETC race, and his specific preparation for the upcoming World Mountain Running Championships in Spain. With remarkable self-awareness, Remy analyzes his strengths—particularly his ability to climb efficiently after descending—and how he's tailoring his training for the unique demands of championship mountain racing.Perhaps most compelling is Remi's perspective on representing Team Canada on the world stage. Beyond personal achievement, he sees international performance as crucial for growing competitive mountain running in Canada, shifting perceptions from casual recreation to serious sport. His measured ambition—targeting a top-10 finish against running powerhouses like Kenya, Uganda, and Italy—reveals both humility and confidence.Join us for this fascinating glimpse into elite mountain running through the eyes of an athlete who's learned that sometimes the best decisions come from following your gut rather than your spreadsheet. Whether you're chasing podiums or personal bests, Remy's journey offers valuable insights on balancing structure with spontaneity in pursuit of your running goals.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: August 6, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS9: E3: Rod Roddy (LeRoux)- The Cajun SwampersSHOW SUMMARY:Pull up a chair on the bayou as Rod Roddy, founding member and keyboard master of Louisiana rock legends LeRoux, opens his home and memory vault for an intimate conversation about a musical journey spanning five decades. The humble piano player whose band earned the nickname "The Steely Dan of the South" takes us from his earliest days learning to play by ear to touring alongside rock royalty like Journey and Kansas. With characteristic Cajun warmth, Roddy reveals how LeRoux evolved from local favorites playing cover tunes to acclaimed recording artists and the house band at the legendary Studio in the Country in Bogalusa. In a poignant reflection on bandmates and friends, Roddy shares the spiritual awakening that led vocalist Jeff Pollard to walk away at the height of the band's success, and honors the recent losses of founding members Leon Medica and Tony Haselden. Through tales of their commercial breakthrough with "So Fired Up" and their 2020 return to their funkier roots on "One of Those Days," Roddy paints a vivid portrait of a band whose sound embodied Louisiana's rich musical gumbo.Perhaps most moving is Roddy's vulnerability when discussing the hearing issues that have changed his relationship with music, and his philosophical approach to LeRoux's uncertain future. "When we get together on stage, it's magic," he muses, "and we miss that part of it." For fans of regional rock history, studio musicianship, or anyone who's ever been moved by "New Orleans Ladies," this conversation offers rare insights into the creative spirit that kept LeRoux's musical flame burning for over four decades.Check out LeRoux's music and follow their journey at www.larueband.com as they determine what the next chapter holds for this beloved Southern rock institution.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web PageWeb - www.leroux.bandFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/louisianaslerouxCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Send us a textRemy Leroux returns to the Steep Stuff Podcast to share insights from his podium finish at the Alta 50K and his strategy for the upcoming Sunapee Scramble mountain running championships. Fresh from the Brooks team summit in Seattle, Remy opens up about the exciting experience of joining what he considers "the best sub-ultra trail team on the planet." He describes how Brooks actively incorporates athlete feedback into shoe design, even creating custom footwear for specific races, and the camaraderie of training with teammates who will race together throughout the season. The conversation shifts to Remy's impressive tactical approach at the Alta 50K, where he maintained disciplined pacing while others pushed too hard on climbs. "I would get dropped on every climb and catch them back on every downhill," Remy explains, demonstrating the race intelligence that earned him a spot on the podium in one of the most competitive early-season fields. As a Canadian athlete whose World Championship spot is already secured, Remy offers a unique perspective on the upcoming Sunapee Scramble. Unlike American competitors fighting for limited team positions, he can focus purely on racing his best. He breaks down the modified course, which combines elements of last year's classic and vertical races, and analyzes the strengths of competitors like downhill specialist Dan Wallis and emerging threat Mason Coppi. What stands out most is Remy's thoughtful approach to his racing schedule – maintaining higher training volume through the early races in a five-week competition block to ensure peak performance during his season's final objectives. His insights provide a fascinating glimpse into the strategic mindset of elite mountain runners balancing competition, training, and recovery across a demanding season.Don't miss this conversation with one of trail running's most consistent performers as he prepares to take on North America's best at the Sunapee Scramble.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Vlan!

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2025 11:57

Visit our Substack for bonus content and more: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/jordan-mechner As a kid in the 80's, Eli fell in love with games on computers like the Apple II, Commodore 64, and later the Amiga and Macintosh. One of the very first games he played was called Karateka, which was inspiring for the realistic movements of its digital karate antagonists, even on a black-and-green Apple II monitor. Our guest today, Jordan Mechner, created Karateka while an undergrad at Yale University in 1984, and it went on to be a commercial success. He followed it up with the game Prince of Persia (you'll hear a clip from the soundtrack in the introduction, which Jordan's father composed and which Jordan invented a way to transpose onto the Apple II's tinny speakers before game soundtracks were widespread on the machine). Jordan documented the creation of the game in a wonderful published version of his diaries called The Making of Prince of Persia, and we spoke with him about how he taught himself the skills to build successful video games in a pre-internet era, why he journaled about his work process (and what it taught him), and about his new graphic novel Replay, a memoir recounting his own family story of war, exile and new beginnings. Book & links mentioned Journals: Steven Soderbergh, Michael Palin, Brian Eno Hobonichi Techo John August The World of Yesterday, Stefan Zweig Bio Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, comic book artist, and screenwriter, best known for creating the iconic video game Prince of Persia in 1989. He relaunched the series with Ubisoft in 2003 and wrote the original screenplay for the film adaptation produced by Disney in 2010, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This work is considered a timeless classic and has spawned a global transmedia franchise, with over 20 million games sold to date. Since 2017, Jordan has been living in France, where he made his debut as a full author with his autobiographical graphic novel Replay. Among the albums he has written are Monte-Cristo (with Mario Alberti), Liberté! (with Étienne Le Roux and Loïc Chevallier), and Templiers (with LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland), which appeared on the New York Times bestsellers list. His latest works were first published in French, with English editions following in 2024. Jordan's video games, such as Karateka (1984) and The Last Express (1997), are recognized for their cinematic storytelling and innovative use of rotoscoping. In 2017, he received the Pioneer Award from the International Game Developers Association. Jordan also wrote and directed Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story, an award-winning documentary broadcast on PBS. He has published his development journals, The Making of Karateka and The Making of Prince of Persia, as well as an adaptation of the Persian tales Samak the Ayyar. A passionate artist, he keeps a sketchbook journal, regularly sharing his thoughts and drawings, a testament to his love for art and storytelling. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. Episode 138 Yvonne Leroux    Detectives in the York Regional Police, located in Ontario, Canada, had a perplexing scene on their hands in late November 1972. A teenage girl was found dead in the middle of a quiet roadway, bludgeoned to death. It appeared she may have been raped as well.  The victim, 16 year old Yvonne Leroux, was well known to police because of her recent history as the victim in a drug-pushing biker gang's threats to her safety. But all investigative avenues in pursuit of this information led nowhere. Detectives over the years revived the case, but got nowhere until they obtained a male DNA profile from Yvonne's autopsy samples in 2001. Finally, in 2021, the investigation turned to IGG, the oldest cold case taken up by Canada's only in-house law enforcement genealogy team.  They quickly named the man who had killed Yvonne. Her family was relieved to know who had taken Yvonne from them, although many questions remain unanswered.
