A strong legal challenge is being launched against the Government's new racial hiring policies effectively prohibiting companies with 50 or more employees to appoint white males beyond a certain level. In this interview with BizNews, Sakeliga CEO Piet le Roux calls it “a form of expropriation” and “targeted economic sanctions…domestically aimed at white males”. He says these regulations by the Minister of Labour “basically…put white South African male citizens on the same level as you would a Nigerian or a Zimbabwean or someone from the furthest corners of the earth”. Le Roux says the legal challenge will be on the basis that these regulations are “unconstitutional, impossible to implement and harmful”. Furthermore, he warns that it is “definitely oil on the fire” of South African international trade relations. “Foreign companies face very big problems under these regulations”. He vows that Sakeliga and its partner, the National Employers Association of South Africa (Neasa), will use “the full extent of legal procedures available to us to interdict and to overturn this”.

Business organisation Sakeliga is seeking a court order to force President Cyril Ramaphosa and his cabinet to take direct responsibility for the recovery of a failing municipality. If the court order is granted, power and water must be restored within 30 days and the intervention cannot not stop until the rest of the recovery plan has been successfully executed. In this interview with BizNews, Sakeliga CEO Piet Le Roux explains why this court case would help to lay the foundation for stabilisation and alternative solutions to municipal collapse in the countryside. Should the national executive fail, Sakeliga will ask for new relief under article 172 of the Constitution to restore order in the affected towns: “And I think the people of towns across this country will seize on that new legal terrain to develop the jurisprudence by which businesses and communities themselves must intervene because we cannot sit idly by and let towns go to waste and people's lives be in danger just because the state fails in doing what it should.” With up to 70% of municipalities possibly not going concerns, Le Roux warns: “…if we don't find ways to legitimise and develop recognition and legal protection for communities and businesses to intervene when national executive, the president, the cabinet themselves, fail to do what they should do, we face a destabilised country.”

Visit our Substack for bonus content and more: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/jordan-mechner As a kid in the 80's, Eli fell in love with games on computers like the Apple II, Commodore 64, and later the Amiga and Macintosh. One of the very first games he played was called Karateka, which was inspiring for the realistic movements of its digital karate antagonists, even on a black-and-green Apple II monitor. Our guest today, Jordan Mechner, created Karateka while an undergrad at Yale University in 1984, and it went on to be a commercial success. He followed it up with the game Prince of Persia (you'll hear a clip from the soundtrack in the introduction, which Jordan's father composed and which Jordan invented a way to transpose onto the Apple II's tinny speakers before game soundtracks were widespread on the machine). Jordan documented the creation of the game in a wonderful published version of his diaries called The Making of Prince of Persia, and we spoke with him about how he taught himself the skills to build successful video games in a pre-internet era, why he journaled about his work process (and what it taught him), and about his new graphic novel Replay, a memoir recounting his own family story of war, exile and new beginnings. Book & links mentioned Journals: Steven Soderbergh, Michael Palin, Brian Eno Hobonichi Techo John August The World of Yesterday, Stefan Zweig Bio Jordan Mechner is an American author, game designer, comic book artist, and screenwriter, best known for creating the iconic video game Prince of Persia in 1989. He relaunched the series with Ubisoft in 2003 and wrote the original screenplay for the film adaptation produced by Disney in 2010, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This work is considered a timeless classic and has spawned a global transmedia franchise, with over 20 million games sold to date. Since 2017, Jordan has been living in France, where he made his debut as a full author with his autobiographical graphic novel Replay. Among the albums he has written are Monte-Cristo (with Mario Alberti), Liberté! (with Étienne Le Roux and Loïc Chevallier), and Templiers (with LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland), which appeared on the New York Times bestsellers list. His latest works were first published in French, with English editions following in 2024. Jordan's video games, such as Karateka (1984) and The Last Express (1997), are recognized for their cinematic storytelling and innovative use of rotoscoping. In 2017, he received the Pioneer Award from the International Game Developers Association. Jordan also wrote and directed Chavez Ravine: A Los Angeles Story, an award-winning documentary broadcast on PBS. He has published his development journals, The Making of Karateka and The Making of Prince of Persia, as well as an adaptation of the Persian tales Samak the Ayyar. A passionate artist, he keeps a sketchbook journal, regularly sharing his thoughts and drawings, a testament to his love for art and storytelling. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. Send us a textWhat does it take to transform from a competitive tennis player into one of trail running's most exciting uphill specialists? Remy Leroux shares his remarkable journey with refreshing candor and scientific precision in this wide-ranging conversation about the evolution of mountain running.Fresh off his impressive third-place finish at the Big Alta 50K against elite competition, Remy opens up about finding running after his tennis career ended at age 19. Without the traditional track background of many elites, he's carved out a unique path to success through methodical training and race analysis. His approach to the sport combines meticulous preparation with genuine passion – monitoring heart rate variability before races to determine his caffeine intake and music selection, while remaining childlike in his enthusiasm for exploring endless dirt roads during Quebec's harsh winters.Remy's recent signing with Brooks reflects the growing investment in sub-ultra mountain running, joining a stacked roster of specialists in a discipline that's gaining momentum in North America. He offers fascinating insights into the differences between European and American race cultures, revealing why standardized courses and distinct race categorizations might help sub-ultra racing gain the popularity it enjoys overseas. What makes Remy particularly compelling is his specialized uphill ability – twice defeating mountain running legend David Sinclair – combined with his analytical approach to improvement. He breaks down his race strategy for iconic events like Broken Arrow and Sierra-Zinal with the precision of someone who studies every aspect of his craft while maintaining genuine joy in the process.Ready to discover what separates ultra from sub-ultra racing psychology and why the latter might provide more thrilling competition? Episode 138 Yvonne Leroux Detectives in the York Regional Police, located in Ontario, Canada, had a perplexing scene on their hands in late November 1972. A teenage girl was found dead in the middle of a quiet roadway, bludgeoned to death. It appeared she may have been raped as well. The victim, 16 year old Yvonne Leroux, was well known to police because of her recent history as the victim in a drug-pushing biker gang's threats to her safety. But all investigative avenues in pursuit of this information led nowhere. Detectives over the years revived the case, but got nowhere until they obtained a male DNA profile from Yvonne's autopsy samples in 2001. Finally, in 2021, the investigation turned to IGG, the oldest cold case taken up by Canada's only in-house law enforcement genealogy team. They quickly named the man who had killed Yvonne. Her family was relieved to know who had taken Yvonne from them, although many questions remain unanswered.
