Gresham discusses the internal battles — self-doubt, exhaustion, and the fading excitement that often follow the initial momentum of launching a business. Despite investing time, money, and energy, he feels behind where he thought he'd be, especially while juggling personal responsibilities like parenthood, marriage, and managing a 15-person team. Gresham emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and personal accountability, questioning not just whether he has done the work, but whether he has been operating at his full potential. Gresham Harkless shares a moment of clarity about the difference between planning and moving forward in faith. He reflects on how he frequently gets lost in weighing his options, when in reality, the problem lies in his reluctance to take action. Motivated by a message from Charaiá Rush, he highlights the idea that faith requires action, even when the path isn't clear. Gresham realizes he's been postponing certain steps, thinking he needed to achieve a goal first, when in fact, those steps are meant to come before the breakthrough. Furthermore, Gresham recognizes that movement, no matter how small or unsure, is how trust is expressed, and that progress comes not from waiting but from engaging with purpose. Gresham Harkless discusses missing his day 178 recording due to a disrupted routine caused by his baby's sleep regression and adjusting to a time zone change, focusing on how life's unpredictability can impact consistency. Gresham highlights the isolating nature of this work, which can sometimes cause one to lose sight of the purpose and approach. He emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment, anchored in faith, and cites 1 Corinthians 3:7 to reinforce that true growth comes from God, not solely from personal effort. Despite the challenges, he remains hopeful, referencing a trainer's experience where things began to shift after five months, suggesting that persistence can eventually lead to progress and clarity. Gresham Harkless shares a raw and motivating message centered on perseverance through difficult times. He reflects on feeling discouraged, as though life isn't aligning in his favor, to emphasize the importance of staying consistent and committed to the work, especially in a results-driven business where one franchise sale can completely shift momentum. Gresham recognizes moments in the past when he gave up and how deeply he regrets them, using that experience to encourage listeners not to "throw in the towel" now. In addition, he points out that enduring hard moments builds the resilience and strength needed for future challenges, and reminds us all that we're closer to our goals than when we began. Gresham Harkless shares a deeply personal moment in his entrepreneurial path, expressing the emotional weight of a season where nothing seems to be going right, professionally or personally. He discusses the cumulative toll of losing loved ones, the underperformance of his digital marketing business despite team growth, and the stagnation of CB Nation, all of which have left him questioning his progress. Despite these challenges, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining faith, practicing mindfulness, and reframing struggles as opportunities for resilience and growth. Gresham highlights the importance of acknowledging small victories, facing challenges with mindful resilience rather than bottling them up, and staying rooted in the belief that obstacles can lay the groundwork for a strong comeback. Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/hLBfAVyeMBsThroughout history, authorities have struggled to manage individuals' urges to speak out against injustice and malpractice. IT has given us new means to obtain and publish data that others may wish to protect or even conceal. To some, those who hack and leak are heroes. To others, they are criminals. In an era of mass leaks and high-profile whistleblowing, who decides whether data thieves and hackers are to be protected or prosecuted? And are the old rules still fit for purpose in the digital age? This lecture will discuss these questions and will consider the moral case for stealing data. This lecture was recorded by Victoria Baines on 20th May 2025 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.Victoria is IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology.Victoria is a Senior Research Associate of the Intellectual Forum at Jesus College, Cambridge, a Senior Research Fellow of the British Foreign Policy Group, and a Fellow of the British Computer Society. In this special episode of day 166 of the Franchise Broker journey, Gresham Harkless reflects on a moment of late-night clarity that led him to reassess his direction and strengths. Gresham realizes that his content creation and digital marketing expertise could be the key to transforming how franchise leads are generated and converted. He identifies a major opportunity in improving the quality and conversion of leads, noting that while he has generated around 120 leads, only about 10–20% have turned into deals, and even fewer have advanced meaningfully. Additionally, he highlights the potential of co-brokering, collaborating with other brokers to help close deals, as a key part of the future strategy. Gresham Harkless reflects on day 164 of his journey as a franchise broker, centering his thoughts around a recent presentation on a sales mastery program. While the program initially caught his interest, he's uncertain whether the $3,000 cost would effectively tackle his main challenge—consistently generating high-quality leads. Gresham recognizes a pattern of time constraints interfering with his goals and feels torn between needing more advanced sales training versus simply increasing lead volume and improving lead quality. Gresham leans toward exploring more targeted lead generation resources, specifically mentioning Alex Hormozi's content, as potentially more impactful. Furthermore, he highlights the importance of understanding client pain points to create more relevant content and strategies. Gresham Harkless shares a transparent and reflective update marked by personal life events and professional roadblocks. After missing the previous day's video due to his son's birthday and a long bike ride, he dives into the core issues he's facing: lead quality, conversion uncertainty, and growing frustration. Gresham highlights the difficulty of identifying which marketing channels or candidate profiles are effective, as the current results lack clear patterns. He reflects on whether his abilities are well-suited for the broker role, and begins to wonder if launching a franchise himself would have made more sense. Despite feeling mentally drained and unsure when to cut losses, he remains cautiously optimistic, reminding himself that even two to four successful deals could change everything. Gresham Harkless takes a moment to reflect on recent progress in his personal life and franchise broker journey while spending time in Austin with his wife's family. He shares that travel went smoothly with their baby and expressed hopes of reconnecting with a local franchisee candidate who had previously gone silent. From a business standpoint, he's testing various outreach methods, such as cold DMs and Meta ads—efforts that generated strong engagement but ultimately didn't lead to any conversions. Gresham recognizes that content creation is his core strength and sees an opportunity to shift away from ad-heavy strategies toward more meaningful, relationship-based growth through storytelling and podcasting. In this episode, Gresham Harkless reflects on reaching day 159 of his journey as a Franchise Broker, sharing powerful insights about growth, discipline, and staying committed through the long game. He introduces the concept of "polite urgency"—a balanced approach to driving action by being assertive without being aggressive. Gresham discusses how many people lose momentum by being passive or indecisive, and how simply following through, communicating promptly, and honoring commitments can set you apart in business. Gresham also points out that strong customer service, like picking up the phone and replying to messages, can make a bigger impact than most realize, especially when combined with a solid product or service. Despite feeling overwhelmed at times, he stresses the value of staying focused, taking consistent action, and treating each day as a step toward long-term goals. In this special episode, Gresham Harkless reflects on the challenges, setbacks, and learning curves he's faced at the 175-day mark of his franchise broker journey. Gresham aims to close two deals within that time frame, but he's only seen limited movement with one candidate whose financial readiness is uncertain. He shares how the process has proven far more difficult than anticipated, with many candidates dropping off at various stages and deals taking much longer than expected, often four to six months or more. Gresham emphasizes that the biggest barrier is generating consistent, qualified leads, calling it a “leads game” where, without a strong pipeline, no amount of knowledge or process can make up the difference. Moreover, Gresham remains committed to learning and adjusting, focusing on lead generation and advising others to start part-time and build from there. Some advice for therapists and those in adjacent healing professions: This (gestures wildly at everything) is not the time to close ranks. We're being called to proceed with less ego and more accountability. Lately, however, anger (much of it warranted) and impatience have turned accountability into more of a cudgel than the intended call-in. Gresham Harkless reflects on the challenges he's facing as a new franchise broker, particularly when candidates encounter unexpected financing obstacles. Gresham shares that one of the toughest but most important parts of the process is recognizing when a candidate may be heading in the wrong direction and making the pivot early, even if it sets the timeline back by several weeks. He emphasizes how financing plays a central role in determining what brands are accessible, with more established brands often being easier to fund than emerging ones. Gresham also mentions the importance of leaning on funding experts earlier in the process to provide clarity and avoid delays. Gresham notes that creating space for honest, consistent conversations helps uncover hidden concerns and builds deeper trust. Moreover, he emphasizes the long-term value of authentic connections, where empathy and open dialogue drive better outcomes and lasting partnerships. On day 154 of his franchise broker journey, Gresham Harkless reflects on the emotional and strategic challenges of building momentum without having closed a traditional deal. While others in his cohort have closed deals—mostly through personal connections—he's navigating the harder road of building a system that doesn't rely on warm leads. Gresham acknowledges the temptation to press clients when deals lag, especially with long lead times, like one prospect who keeps pushing meetings back months at a time—but he consciously focuses on planting seeds and celebrating small wins. Gresham recognizes lead quality as the biggest challenge and is shifting his strategy toward more targeted outreach, including cold emailing, LinkedIn messaging, and Google Ads aimed at experienced franchise owners. He also sees potential in reconnecting with candidates who didn't complete the process with other brokers, viewing partnerships and strategic collaborations as a smart path to create new opportunities. In this special episode, Gresham Harkless shares a transparent and introspective update on his franchise broker journey, now over 150 days in, noting the emotional weight of not yet closing a deal. He expresses a mix of hope and frustration, acknowledging his strengths in lead generation but recognizing a gap in nurturing leads through the lengthy sales cycle. Gresham identifies a key mistake in not qualifying candidates financially early enough, realizing that without proper funding, even motivated prospects can't move forward. In addition, Gresham is confronting the emotional fatigue of ghosted candidates and unclear financing paths, and he's beginning to see that focusing on mindset, money, and motivation, especially securing the financial piece, is crucial before advancing candidates too far. He reflects on the frustration of feeling like he should be further ahead, despite putting in consistent effort, and how that mindset can cloud the real progress being made. Gresham emphasizes the importance of the three core elements in the franchise process—mindset, money, and motivation— in evaluating candidates and maintaining his momentum. He shares examples of how deals have stalled or fallen through due to candidates lacking one of these elements, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the business. Street Soccer Portland is part of a national organization that aims to expand access to playing soccer by providing a free alternative to the pay-to-play model of club soccer. The local chapter primarily serves elementary and middle school-aged children through afterschool programs currently being offered at 20 schools and community centers in Portland, Tigard, Gresham and Vancouver. Partnerships and donations from companies like Adidas and Nike help provide free uniforms and equipment to participants, most of whom are low-income and would otherwise not be able to afford the hundreds of dollars a youth club soccer team would likely charge to join. Since joining Street Soccer Portland two years ago, Program Director Julian Alexander has expanded participation in the organization by more than 140%, from roughly 1,000 to nearly 2,400 participants last year. Program Coordinator Saul Meneses Zurita is now helping coach the next generation of players after first playing in one of Street Soccer Portland’s afterschool programs 11 years ago. Alexander and Zurita join us to share the impact Street Soccer Portland is having on and off the field. They’ll also share details about the annual spring tournament that hundreds of fourth and fifth graders will compete in next Friday at Davis Elementary School in Gresham.

On day 151 of the Franchise Broker journey, Gresham Harkless kicks off the second day of a new 12-week year, using it as a chance to step back and re-evaluate his systems, especially around lead generation. Gresham emphasizes that most of his successful connections reaching the "Zore" stage came organically through Facebook outreach, highlighting the strategic value of personalized direct messaging. In contrast, leads from Google Ads have been less fruitful, producing a few quality leads but mostly low-quality ones, prompting a need to refine that channel. He also sees potential in LinkedIn but hasn't tapped into it effectively yet. Moving forward, he's focused on building a lead-gen system starting with a newsletter where people can opt into what they're looking for. In this special episode, Gresham Harkless reflects on personal and professional growth as he kicks off a fresh 12-week year, marking day 64 of his overall franchise broker journey. Gresham set three focused goals: adding $5K in recurring revenue (mainly through CEO Hacks), generating 300 new leads for Blue Star Franchise, and completing a year-long Bible reading plan. Gresham emphasizes the importance of lead measures—daily, controllable actions that drive results over time, particularly for building a sustainable lead generation system for Blue Star. Amid personal losses from the previous year and the joys of new fatherhood, he's using this season as a reset—to plant seeds, instill strong habits, and build his business "brick by brick," with both resilience and long-term vision. On Day 63 of the Franchise Broker journey, Gresham Harkless shares a candid update about recent life changes and their impact on his focus and priorities. With the arrival of his new son, he's been adapting to a new routine, which has brought both challenges and clarity. Gresham highlights how having less time has helped him become more intentional and focused, a concept aligned with the principles of the 12 Week Year, which he's actively implementing. Gresham discusses the value of "disruptions," both internal and external, as opportunities for growth and resilience. He's refining his 12-week goals, possibly reducing them from three to two, as one health-related goal may not be realistic given his current sleep schedule. Furthermore, Gresham expresses gratitude for his supportive family and the progress in his business, maintaining excitement and optimism about what's to come. In this episode of the Minor Issues Podcast, Mark Thornton unpacks the fascinating world of the gold-silver ratio. Once a key player in bimetallism debates and Gresham's law, this ratio is now making headlines as it hovers near record highs—over 100 ounces of silver to one ounce of gold.Mark explores the historical context behind these numbers, and explains why these shifts can signal deeper changes in the economy. He also breaks down what the ratio means for different types of investors, how tariffs and trade wars can twist relative prices across the board, and why understanding these shifts is crucial for everyone—not just economists.Additional ResourcesGold-Silver Ratio Charts at Gold Price: Mises.org/MI_119_A"Bring Back Gold!" by Lew Rockwell: Mises.org/MI_119_B"Gold:silver ratio hits 105, but analysts are not giving up on the ‘little' sibling" by Neils Christensen (Kitco): Mises.org/MI_119_CBe sure to follow Minor Issues at Mises.org/MinorIssues

Gresham Harkless reflects on Day 58 of his Franchise Broker journey, noting that it has been a slower period, but a good time for planning for the upcoming year. He shares excitement about new beginnings, particularly the personal milestone of his relationship with his bonus son. On the business side, Gresham mentions that Google Ads hasn't been as effective as hoped, but organic search has yielded better results, especially for specific queries related to vending. Moreover, Gresham emphasizes the importance of experimentation and adjusting strategies based on what works and what doesn't as he continues to refine his approach. Gresham Harkless reflects candidly on the emotional and operational challenges of working as a business broker, especially after five to six months without closing a deal. Gresham emphasizes that the most difficult aspect of the role is managing the human element—navigating silent objections, inconsistent communication, and the emotional ups and downs of clients. Despite enjoying certain parts of the process, like presenting opportunities, he's come to realize that his core strength and passion lie in lead generation and content creation. Gresham successfully built a pipeline of around 20 prospects, but the time and energy required to manage those relationships have made him question whether this is the best use of his skills. Finally, he acknowledges that aligning his work with his strengths, rather than forcing a full-cycle approach, may lead to more sustainable success. In this special episode of Franchise Broker Journey (Day 56), Gresham Harkless shares a blend of personal and sports-related insights. He begins by touching on his exhaustion from lack of sleep, hinting at preparation for his newborn, and then transitions into his thoughts on the Dallas Cowboys' football season. Despite initial disappointments, Harkless emphasizes recognizing that not every season is meant for "reaping" — some are for "planting seeds." Gresham connects his struggles — including the loss of his dog Star, his grandmother, and his uncle — to show how emotional turbulence can impact decision-making. Gresham Harkless reflects on Day 56 of his Franchise Broker journey, noting the emotional weight of the process despite having zero sales so far. He's been engaging with candidates and recently had a promising conversation with a Google Ads lead, emphasizing the importance of building rapport and treating these talks like podcast interviews—conversational, yet intentional. Gresham also shares a personal pivot: he's pausing his weekly inspirational text messages, which included Bible verses, due to limited feedback and the need to reevaluate. He acknowledges the challenge of releasing old habits and digital clutter but emphasizes regular review and de-cluttering as essential for growth.
