Part 1 The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss Summary"The Name of the Wind" is the first book in Patrick Rothfuss's fantasy trilogy, "The Kingkiller Chronicle." The story follows the journey of a young man named Kvothe, who is a gifted and multifaceted character with a tragic past. The narrative is framed as a story being told by Kvothe himself, now living a quiet life as an innkeeper named Kote. The tale begins as a mysterious chronicler finds him and persuades him to recount his life's story.Kvothe's narrative spans his early years as a member of a traveling troupe of performers, where he is exposed to music, storytelling, and magic. After the brutal murder of his parents by a group of beings known as the Chandrian, Kvothe becomes orphaned and struggles to survive on the streets of the nearby city, Tarbean. There, he learns about the harsh realities of life and the importance of cunning and adaptability.Eventually, Kvothe makes his way to the prestigious University, where he aspires to learn about magic ("sympathy"), science, and lore. His incredible intelligence and natural talent make him a strong student, but he also faces significant challenges, including rivalries with fellow students like Ambrose and the financial difficulties associated with tuition. While at the University, Kvothe becomes embroiled in various adventures, including his quest to uncover the truth about the Chandrian and to learn the elusive "name of the wind," which holds powerful magical potential. He builds relationships with key characters such as the enigmatic Denna, a young woman who captures his heart, and Master Elodin, a talented but unconventional teacher who challenges Kvothe's understanding of magic.Throughout the book, themes of storytelling, identity, and the nature of truth are explored, as Kvothe navigates a world filled with danger, secrets, and the pursuit of knowledge. The story blends elements of myth and reality, presenting Kvothe as both a hero and a legend.Ultimately, "The Name of the Wind" sets the stage for Kvothe's exploits and the mysteries that still surround his life, leaving readers eager to discover the full arc of his journey in the subsequent books.Part 2 The Name of the Wind AuthorPatrick Rothfuss is an American author, best known for his debut novel "The Name of the Wind," which was released on March 27, 2007. Inspired by an action figure, Auri goes to put her face on. We ship an all-time bad episode as we fail to remember anything about the proceeding books and try to talk about what Kvothe thinks of Auris' gifts, who else Auri hangs with, the real-world history of cosmetics, and where Auri goes to poop. @pageofthewind pageofthewind.com Join the community on Discord at https://discord.gg/tCZc6kXQcg If you like the show, tell a friend!
Auri assembles a series of perfect ingredients for her craft. We talk about how Auri seems to be the only one who gets Kvothe, how Auri seems to be ok doing things for something else, and the terror of the Tiger Bomb. pageofthewind.com If you like the show, tell a friend!
Auri decides to make Kvothe a candle. We talk about laurels, Jeremy learns a crazy fact about olives (nature's most delicious fruit), and the rule of threes being acknowledged in the story. Also, rest assured that Nick will be severely punished for juggling his microphone throughout the episode. @pageofthewind pageofthewind.com Join the community on Discord at https://discord.gg/tCZc6kXQcg If you like the show, tell a friend!
Auri sets the room up for Kvothe to stay, should he need. Auri wracks her brain trying to decide what to give to Kvothe when he visits, then takes Fulcrum on a walk. Auri makes a trade that feels right. We talk about the Menders again, and whether we think Auri has got religion. We also talk about how Auri's worsening conditions lead her to consider compromise, and how a small detail on this page is reminiscent of a trigger of Kvothe's. And we finish things off with a “well-actually”-off. @pageofthewind pageofthewind.com Join the community on Discord at https://discord.gg/tCZc6kXQcg If you like the show, tell a friend!
Auri saves a little critter … or does she? The day gets a little worse as Auri runs out of soap. We talk about a particularly weird place-name, Auri's read on Kvothe, and without Nick our remaining cohosts struggle to find things to discuss. Auri is delighted to discover a perfect space, but is distracted by mysterious music. Auri emerges, is VERY cold, and then goes back into the water. In this episode of Davos Fingers covering NINE chapters, Denna gets over her high while Kvothe confronts the rampaging Draccus and offers it some Sympathy before making his way home to the University. He has many apologies to give and amends to make there, but one consistent thorn in Kvothe's side learns that sticks and stones may be bad, but Names actually can hurt something fierce. He also goes up on the horns, again, and is sentenced to a lashing, awarded a small fortune, expelled from the University, promoted to Re'lar, and readmitted to the University in the span of a few minutes. And lastly, Kvothe finally gathers the courage to ask Auri to show him her home. It's a lot of content, and the Fingers enjoyed every minute of it! If you love all the good spoilery bits talked about in the future sections of this book, don't miss Devi After Dark at the end of the episode where we chat about some of the deeper mysteries in this series. Matt and Scad celebrate their 150th episode with a doozy of a selection of chapters from The Name of the Wind. Kvothe hears that the Chandrian have appeared only one day prior and a mere afternoon's ride away. He drops everything, procures a loan for a horse and sets off to see evidence of this childhood faerie tale turned real life trauma. When he arrives, Denna just happens to be the only survivor from the slaughter, and the two of them tour the scene of the crime together. Also inside, we reminisce about our 150 episodes together and share some heartfelt and very touching listener feedback from the Khalasar. Episode 147: Caught By A Smile The boys from Davos' Fingers get a nice easy break this episode to sit back and listen to a master at work. This series of chapters is contained almost entirely within the happening music spot, The Eolian, where Kvothe attempts to “earn his pipes”. A small trinket fashioned to look like silver pipes, they will earn him money and clout if he is successful. But it is no easy task, as it takes a flawless and moving performance from a skilled artist, with most attempts not meeting the bar. Kvothe drinks with his good friends, makes a few new ones, and is reunited with an old one from months ago all in this one magical night at the Eolian. Kvothe and Denna go on a date to a secluded dell. We debate what exactly Denna means by her story, the pitfalls of not being able to say plainly what's on your mind, and how that leads to tragedy. @pageofthewind pageofthewind.com Join the community on Discord at https://discord.gg/tCZc6kXQcg To support the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike as they battle for a living wage and decent working conditions, visit one or more of these links: https://www.wgacontract2023.org/strike-hub https://entertainmentcommunity.org/ https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/the-snacklist-support-striking-workers
The Fingers find Kvothe at the end of his first term considerably richer than he was when he first arrived, with a true enemy in Ambrose, and a wild reputation that is MOSTLY true spreading like wildfire through the University. But as he approaches his second term and finds himself short of tuition money with no easy way to get more, he turns to scary options in order to stay a student, and even scarier options to bring music back into his life. There is also a woman waiting in the wings…or maybe she entered in this set of chapters? Come join us to get our thoughts on the matter. Well the Fingers have certainly stumbled into a Tavern Tale, though Kvothe might disagree. This episode moves FAST. Kvothe gets to teach his first lesson at the University (you didn't misread that), gets punished and rewarded for it (you didn't misread that either), then gets his wounds tended to, but then opens a new wound himself by disobeying a serious rule of the University. If only he had figured out that 4-plated DOOR first!! So much happens to Kvothe so quickly, sometimes you just want to tell him to slow down, but here we are! Matt and Scad have really hit their stride in their coverage of The Kingkiller Chronicle weaving pop culture and their personal lives in with some in-depth analysis of the text. Like listening to two friends chat about something you love, come join us! The Davos' Fingers Podcast is spoiler free during its coverage of The Name of the Wind, so listen in safe in the knowledge that we won't discuss beyond the chapters at hand. In Episode 144*, the Fingers follow Kvothe into Imre and further into the depths of the University. Inside, we get a cultural education about the University, and we meet the Masters that control admissions. Kvothe must work some Kvothian magic to be admitted, but once he is, we get to meet some new friends and some new enemies. Kvothe is at the University at last; where he thinks he belongs, and that is something to celebrate.
