Po-Shen Loh is a Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University with research interests in combinatorics, probability theory, and computer science. Today’s guest is Po-Shen Loh: Associate Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University, founder and CEO of Expii, and team leader of the United States International Math Olympiad (IMO) team. A self-proclaimed math enthusiast and evangelist, Po sits down with Richard to share the lessons he’s learned, his thoughts on his many accomplishments, and how he strives to bring math to the world.

He's focused on taking the top mathematician high school students in the country and teaching them how to be successful for the rest of their lives. Po Shen Loh, mathematics professor at Carnegie Mellon University and founder of expii.com joins The Big Trade series. Peter and Po start the conversation by talking about the concept of inquiry based learning. The pair then delves into the current state of the education system… touching on inequality in the system, testing and cognitive approaches toward learning. Next, Po introduces Expii – an app that encourages inquiry based learning. He explains how he designed the user interface, sequence of questions and the app’s navigation structure. Po concludes the conversation by giving advice on how math and rational thought concepts can be applied to business and finance.

Po Shen Loh took an hour out of his day to sit down with the Going Deep podcast and discuss his company Expii that helps students learn difficult STEM topics.   He represented the USA Math team at the International Mathematical Olympiad as a high schooler in 1999, where he won a silver medal. He came back to the team as a deputy leader (assistant coach) in 2004 and 2010-2013. He took over the Head Lead role in 2014 and led the US to its first championship in 21 years in 2015.   Po founded Expii Inc. in January of 2014 as a learning tool to help replicate the most effective methods of teaching students all over the world. Expii's mission is as follows;    "We believe that high-quality educational resources should be available to anyone, no matter where they are or what they can afford. We also believe that students and teachers are the best at explaining things. We build the tools ordinary people need to educate one another. So far, we've designed an approachable markup language that enthusiasts have used to create thousands of lessons. We've also created a free platform to interconnect these lessons." Po got his PHD in Mathematics from Princeton in 2010, where his thesis discussed combinatorics (the study of discrete systems) and probability theory. Prior to his work at Princeton, Po-Shen received the equivalent of a masters degree in mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 2005, where he was supported by a Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship.
