“You can't be someone who shies away from sticking your neck out. I tell our guys: ‘We are trying to win.' I'll say it publicly. I will say it to anybody. Maybe that puts pressure on us. In our first season of the podcast, we interviewed author Michael Zigarelli, who wrote a book called The Messiah Method: The 7 Disciplines of the Winningest College Soccer Program in America. The book outlined the tremendous success of Messiah College soccer, where between 2000 and 2010 the mens and women's teams had won 11 national titles and been to 17 Final Fours between them. Ever since then, we have wanted to bring onto the podcast the architect of that dynasty Dave Brandt. Today we get to do that. In 24 seasons as a college head coach, including stints at Messiah, the US Naval Academy, Hope College and Bucknell, Dave Brandt has won over 360 games. In 12 years at Messiah, his teams compiled a 246-25-14 (.888) record, won six Division III national championships and made eight Final Four appearances. Brandt was a four-time National Coach of the Year honoree at Messiah, and five of his student-athletes earned National Player of the Year honors. He then moved on to the Naval Academy where he turned around a program and won the Patriot League as the first undefeated, untied conference champion in league history. After a short stint in professional soccer with the Pittsburg Riverhounds, he returned to college coaching at Hope College in MI where he again turned around a losing program and led them to an NCAA appearance and conference championship. This past Fall he led Bucknell to the Patriot League title and an NCAA tournament bid. In our chat today, Dave unpacks the core principles of all the winning programs he has built, how passion and intentionality drive his programs, the secrets to having standards not rules, the value of love in your coaching, and so much more. Sign up for free here: https://ryanhawk.kit.com/profile Bob Stoops was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2021. He was the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016. He led the Sooners to a 191-48 record over his career. His 2000/2001 team won the national championship. He earned the National Coach of the Year award the same season. Since 2020, Stoops has been a head coach in the XFL, winning an XFL Championship in 2023 with the Arlington Renegades. He played college football at the University of Iowa, earning team MVP his senior year as a defensive back. Notes: Coaches Bob has worked for: Hayden Fry at Iowa, Bill Snyder at Kansas State, and Steve Spurrier at Florida. He's worked for some amazing coaches. Relationships are everything. You must connect with people. You must be authentic. Learn from other coaches, but you have to be yourself Sherri Coale: “One of my favorite things about him is he's the busiest man on the planet but never appeared that way. That's a skill and an art. That fascinates me.” What makes a great head coach? They relate to people. They care about them. They can motivate and influence by clearly sharing the vision of the program and inspiring others to get on board. They are decisive people. Most importantly, they know how to connect with people. All leadership is a people business. If you can't connect with others, you'll probably struggle. Creating a “coaches forest” (beyond a tree) - Mike Stoops, Mark Mangino, Mike Leach, Bo Pelini, Kevin Sumlin, Kevin Wilson, Lincoln Riley, and more. How has Bob prepared so many guys to be successful head coaches? Hiring – “I always tried to hire people smarter than me.” A lot of people say this, but not all do this. Coach Stoops looked for people who had a track record of performance… And then he used his gut instincts after he spent time with him. He paid attention to how they treated his secretary, how they treated the waiter at lunch… Some call those the little things, but they were very important to Coach Stoops The overarching theme of the entire conversation was the simplicity of how Coach Stoops built his program. He didn't try to overcomplicate anything. He knew he wanted coaches who were accomplished, high-character people. And he wanted tough players who loved football. Their offenses may have looked exotic but they didn't have a ton of plays installed. They focused on what they did and then practiced it relentlessly so that they would execute better than their opponents. I think there's something beautiful in the simplicity with how he's built his program and the results speak for themselves. Great players want to be coached - Jeremiah Smith, Adrian Peterson. What he looked for in players: They have to LOVE football. Need to be tough and physical. Someone like Dan Cody. From Oklahoma, was skinny, and nobody on the staff wanted to give him a scholarship, but Coach Stoops did, and he turned out to be a great player. Liked to keep local guys home. Off-season workouts create the culture of the team. "We won because we outworked everyone." The attitude of the national championship team - "They were tired of being kicked around." And "I shared with them the history of Oklahoma and let them know the way it should be. When we started, they were a losing team." Josh Heupel - The most valuable recruit ever for Coach Stoops. Mike Leach was a 1 of 1. An original. He seemed relaxed and casual, but he was also very demanding that they do it right. He was also focused on just a few plays instead of trying to do everything. FOCUS. Do what we do Wife Carol - Impressive leader at Mary Kay. Won a pink Cadillac 16 years in a row. National Sales Director. Life/Career Advice - Go hard, be tough, be true to yourself, enjoy the struggle, and look forward to the fight. Nothing great happens without going through struggles first.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of sitting down with my good friend, Nick Mingione, the head baseball coach at the University of Kentucky. Nick's insights into leadership, culture, and faith are nothing short of transformative. Nick shares his unique strategy for fostering internal accountability within his team, where love and accountability go hand in hand. We explore his powerful analogy of staying "inside the house," promoting behaviors that build unity and growth. Nick also captivates us with anecdotes where players humorously call each other "on the porch," encouraging adherence to team values in a light-hearted, yet impactful way. The episode is rich with wisdom on building a pressure-free environment and addressing issues like negative self-talk and repeated mistakes. Nick's approach to coaching is both profound and practical; he emphasizes the importance of character, integrity, and continuous improvement, allowing individuals time to grow their roots deep. We also delve into the significance of leadership founded on faith, with meaningful reflections on how surrendering control can lead to positive transformations. Nick's vulnerability and openness about his own struggles, particularly during challenging seasons, are both inspiring and enlightening. Together, we discuss the essence of championship culture, consistent values, and the vital role of faith in developing strong, cohesive teams. Tune in to this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast and be inspired by the journey, faith, and wisdom of Coach Nick Mingione. About Nick, Nick Mingione became the head coach of Kentucky Baseball in 2016, and in just eight seasons, he's transformed the program. Under his leadership, the Wildcats made their first-ever College World Series appearance and achieved multiple record-breaking seasons, including a historic 46-win campaign in 2024 that earned him SEC and National Coach of the Year honors. Mingione's first season saw Kentucky reach the Super Regionals and finish in the Top 10 nationally. His success continued with 42 players drafted into Major League Baseball, including top-20 picks like Evan White, Zack Thompson, and Ryan Waldschmidt. His recruiting prowess and player development have made Kentucky one of the nation's elite programs. Before his time at UK, Mingione was a key part of Mississippi State's coaching staff, where he helped lead the team to the 2013 College World Series and an SEC title in 2016. He's also built a reputation for developing strong student-athletes, with numerous players earning SEC academic honors and All-American distinctions. Mingione's impact extends beyond the field, as he's deeply involved in the Lexington community and committed to shaping young men into leaders, both in baseball and life. His coaching philosophy centers around the principles of "Student. Person. Player." Away from baseball, Mingione is active in mission work, including building homes and running baseball clinics in the Bahamas. He and his wife, Christen, have one son, Reeves. It's the journey going toward what your Olympics is." On this Dying to Ask: The growing sport of sprint kayaking What it's like growing up with an Olympian for a parent What Shelley did to not force her sport on her kids What it takes to pursue an Olympic dream while going to a school like USC
