VOV1 - Đã có một công dân Việt Nam thiệt mạng do trận động đất có độ lớn 7,1 xảy ra tại khu vực Kyushu- miền Nam Nhật Bản. Hiện nay, các cơ quan đại diện ngoại giao của Việt Nam tại Nhật Bản đang làm việc với các bên liên quan để hỗ trợ nạn nhân và gia đình.Theo xác nhận của các cơ quan đại diện ngoại giao Việt Nam tại Nhật Bản, ngay sau khi động đất xảy ra, Đại sứ quán Việt Nam và các cơ quan lãnh sự đã lập tức liên hệ với các nghiệp đoàn, cơ sở tiếp nhận lao động tại khu vực bị ảnh hưởng, như công ty đóng tàu JMU, công ty đóng tàu Oshima, công ty Furi Report, nghiệp đoàn Tozai Shoko… đang quản lý và tiếp nhận khoảng 1.300 thực tập sinh, người lao động Việt Nam. Đến 0 giờ 29/07 (theo giờ địa phương), Tổng Lãnh sự quán Việt Nam tại Fukuoka đã tiếp nhận thông tin về việc một thực tập sinh Việt Nam đã thiệt mạng do động đất.Nạn nhân được xác nhận là T.V.Sơn, sinh năm 2002, quê quán xã Rạng Động, tỉnh Ninh Bình. Thời điểm xảy ra động đất, nạn nhân bị cẩu cần trục trong nhà máy rơi đè lên người. Dù lực lượng cảnh sát và cứu hộ ngay sau đó đã có mặt để sơ cứu, nhưng nạn nhân được xác nhận đã tử vong. Tại nhà máy nơi nạn nhân làm việc, còn 7 thực tập sinh Việt Nam khác, khi xảy ra động đất đã kịp chạy thoát ra ngoài.Thông tin đầy đủ về vụ việc này, bà Trịnh Thị Mai Phương - Tổng Lãnh sự Việt Nam tại Fukuoka, nói: “Đến thời điểm hiện nay, Tổng Lãnh sự quán vấn đang tiếp tục phối hợp chặt chẽ với các cơ quan chức năng của Nhật Bản và các đầu mối cộng đồng để rà soát tình hình công dân Việt Nam, kịp thời triển khai các biện pháp bảo hộ công dân theo quy định, đồng thời cũng đã duy trì đường dây nóng để tiếp nhận và xử lý ngay các đề nghị hỗ trợ từ người dân. Theo thông tin nắm bắt từ cộng đồng, hiện có một công dân Việt Nam không may tử vong trong trận động đất. Tổng Lãnh sự quán đang phối hợp chặt chẽ với các cơ quan chức năng Nhật Bản, doanh nghiệp tiếp nhận và gia đình nạn nhân để thực hiện các thủ tục cần thiết, bảo đảm đầy đủ quyền và các lợi ích hợp pháp của công dân theo quy định của pháp luật Việt Nam và Nhật Bản”.Cũng theo Tổng Lãnh sự quán Việt Nam tại Fukuoka, trong trận động đất xảy ra tại Kumamoto vào chiều qua, có một nữ công dân Việt Nam đang sống tại thành phố Uki, tỉnh Kumamoto bị thương và phải cấp cứu tại bệnh viện. Tuy nhiên, sức khỏe nạn nhân được xác nhận không nguy hiểm đến tính mạng. VOV1 - Trận động đất mạnh 7,1 độ chiều 28/7 tại tỉnh Kumamoto thuộc vùng Kyushyu – miền Nam Nhật Bản, đã đẩy người dân vùng thiên tai vào tình thế phải đối diện với hiểm họa kép khi xảy ra vào thời điểm nắng nóng cực đoan lịch sử đang khiến số người bị sốc nhiệt gia tăng kỷ lục. Theo Cơ quan khí tượng Nhật Bản, hôm nay (29/7), nền nhiệt tại khu vực vừa xảy ra động đất vẫn ở mức rất nguy hiểm đối với sức khỏe và tính mạng con người, khi tiếp tục áp sát mức 39 độ C. Ông Kiyomoto Masashi – chuyên gia của Cơ quan khí tượng Nhật Bản khuyến cáo:“Nhiệt độ vẫn đang ở mức rất cao và sức nóng vô cùng gay gắt. Tất cả mọi người cần có các biện pháp tự bảo vệ, chuẩn bị đủ nước uống để phòng chống cảm nắng, sốc nhiệt”Trong khi đó, theo báo cáo nhanh của chính quyền tỉnh Kumamoto, tính đến thời điểm 9h30 sáng nay, đã có tới 9.872 người dân vùng động đất đất phải sơ tán đến 465 khu lánh nạn tập trung, với điều kiện sinh hoạt khó khăn. Nhiều hộ gia đình may mắn không mất nhà cửa thì đang bị mất điện và không có nước sinh hoạt.Đặc biệt, còn đang xuất hiện một nguy cơ nữa, giống như tiền lệ trong trận động đất Kumamoto 2016, là việc nhiều gia đình tránh nóng bằng cách ở trong các ô tô cá nhân để tận dùng điều hòa của xe. Tuy nhiên, theo các chuyên gia, đây lại là một ẩn họa khác. Giáo sư Kenzawa Kazuhiko thuộc Đại học Niigata cảnh báo:“Sốc nhiệt đã nguy hiểm, nhưng cơ thể mất nước còn nguy hiểm hơn. Khi tránh nóng ở trong xe ô tô, cơ thể rất dễ mất nước. VOV1 - Ngay sau khi trận động đất có độ lớn 7,1 xảy ra tại khu vực Kyushu - miền Nam Nhật Bản, Chính phủ nước này đã kích hoạt cơ chế ứng phó khẩn cấp, đồng thời khẩn trương triển khai các biện pháp để hạn chế thiệt hại do động đất gây ra.Phát biểu trước báo giới tại Phủ Thủ tướng vào tối nay (28/07), Thủ tướng Takaichi Sanae cho biết, bà đã chỉ thị cho các bộ - ngành liên quan nhanh chóng đánh giá mức độ thiệt hại, phối hợp chặt chẽ với chính quyền các địa phương và nỗ lực hết sức để ứng phó khẩn cấp với thiên tai trên nguyên tắc ưu tiên tính mạng người dân là trên hết, cung cấp kịp thời và chính xác thông tin cho người dân, nhất là đối với công tác sơ tán, đồng thời cam kết sẽ triển khai mọi biện pháp để ứng phó và giảm thiểu thiệt hại.Thủ tướng Takaichi - nói:“Hiện nay, lực lượng cảnh sát và phòng cháy - chữa cháy các địa phương đang nỗ lực cứu hộ, tìm kiếm, cứu nạn. Phủ Nội các cũng đã cử nhóm điều tra đặc biệt đến hiện trường để đánh giá thiệt hại về người và tài sản. Bước đầu đã xác định có nhiều người bị thương, nhiều nơi bị cắt điện và xảy ra hỏa hoạn, nhiều đoạn đường, cầu cống và nhà cửa bị sập. Tôi kêu gọi người dân hãy tìm nơi lánh nạn và có biện pháp an toàn để bảo vệ bản thân. Chính phủ sẽ có những biện pháp hỗ trợ thiết thực, kịp thời”.Trong một diễn biến liên quan, Bộ trưởng Quốc phòng Nhật Bản Shinjiro Koizumi cũng nhấn mạnh, mức độ thiệt hại do động đất đã lan rộng, các đơn vị thuộc Lực lượng Phòng vệ Nhật Bản sẽ đẩy nhanh công tác phối hợp thực hiện cứu người bị nạn, đồng thời phối hợp chặt chẽ với các bộ - ngành và chính quyền địa phương liên quan để đảm bảo sử dụng mọi phương tiện thu thập thông tin, hạn chế thiệt hại, cung cấp thông tin kịp thời và chính xác về việc sơ tán và thiệt hại cho người dân.Sau động đất, ba máy bay chiến đấu F-2 cùng trực thăng của Lực lượng Phòng vệ Trên không đã được điều động để thu thập thông tin liên quan, nhiều sĩ quan liên lạc cũng được phái cử đến hỗ trợ các tỉnh Kumamoto, Fukuoka, Nagasaki và Saga. Hiện nay, Bộ Quốc phòng Nhật Bản cũng đã phái cử khoảng 3.600 binh sĩ thuộc Sư đoàn 8, thuộc Lực lượng Phòng vệ Mặt đất đến các khu vực bị ảnh hưởng tại tỉnh Kumamoto và đang tham gia vào các hoạt động cứu hộ tại các địa điểm như trung tâm thương mại Aeon Mall Kumamoto, hay nhà máy giấy Nippon Yatsushiro.Vào lúc 21 giờ tối nay (theo giờ địa phương), Bộ trưởng Bộ Nội vụ và Truyền thông Nhật Bản Hayashi Yoshimasa cũng tổ chức cuộc họp tại Trụ sở Ứng phó Thảm họa Khẩn cấp, và nhấn mạnh “sẽ quyết tâm mạnh mẽ làm tất cả những gì có thể và tiến lên phía trước với tất cả nguồn lực” để ứng phó với thảm họa.Trước đó, vào lúc 16 giờ 27 phút chiều nay, tại khu vực Kyushyu - miền Nam Nhật Bản đã xảy ra một trận động đất có độ lớn 7,1, với tâm chấn có độ sâu là khoảng 10km. Cơ quan khí tượng Nhật Bản đã phải ban bố cảnh báo sóng thần tại khu vực duyên hải của các địa phương gần tâm chấn. Tính đến 21 giờ tối nay, trận động đất đã làm gần 100 người bị thương, trong đó có nhiều trường hợp được xác nhận trong tình trạng nghiêm trọng, ít nhất 20 - 30 nhân viên (thậm chí có thể có cả khách hàng) đang làm việc tại trung tâm mua sắm Aeon Mall Kumamoto hiện chưa thể liên lạc sau động đất. VOV1 - Bão Noul đã đổ bộ vào tỉnh Quảng Đông (Trung Quốc) với cường độ mạnh, buộc địa phương này nâng mức ứng phó khẩn cấp lên cao nhất và sơ tán hơn 700.000 người dân.Theo thông tin từ chính quyền tỉnh Quảng Đông, vào khoảng 3h50' sáng 26/7, tâm bão Noul đã đổ bộ vào khu vực ven biển thị trấn Bình Hải, huyện Huệ Đông, thành phố Huệ Châu, với sức gió mạnh nhất đạt cấp 14 (45 m/giây), áp suất trung tâm thấp nhất 955 hPa.Trước diễn biến phức tạp của bão, tỉnh Quảng Đông đã nâng mức ứng phó khẩn cấp phòng chống bão từ cấp II lên cấp I (mức cao nhất) từ 23h ngày 25/7. Đồng thời, cơ chế ứng phó khẩn cấp cứu trợ thiên tai cấp IV cũng được kích hoạt từ 20h cùng ngày.Chính quyền Quảng Đông cũng yêu cầu các địa phương triển khai các biện pháp phòng chống với tiêu chuẩn cao nhất, tập trung bảo đảm an toàn tính mạng và tài sản của người dân.Tính đến 0h ngày 26/7, toàn tỉnh đã sơ tán tổng cộng 715.351 người. Buen viaje!! Kir Bulichov (cuyo nombre real era Ígor Vsévolodovich Mozheiko) fue un famoso escritor ruso de ciencia ficción, historiador y experto en culturas orientales. Nació en Moscú, Unión Soviética, el 18 de octubre de 1934 y falleció en la misma ciudad el 5 de septiembre de 2003. Usó el seudónimo "Kir Bulichov" para sus obras de ficción. Este nombre lo formó combinando el nombre de su esposa, Kira, y el apellido de soltera de su madre, Bulichova. Al principio, lo hizo para que sus colegas historiadores no pensaran que escribir ficción era un trabajo poco serio. Sin embargo, en 1982, recibió un importante premio por sus guiones de cine, y su identidad secreta se hizo pública. A pesar de sus temores, no fue despedido de su trabajo como historiador. Esta es una de las series más conocidas de Bulichov. Trata sobre Alisa Seléznyova, una chica del futuro que vive emocionantes aventuras. RFI : Yếu tố thứ 2 là “tăng cường kiểm soát xã hội”. Hiện tại chúng ta có thể rút ra ghi nhận gì từ điều này ? Benoît de Tréglodé : Đây không phải là một hiện tượng hoàn toàn mới. Thực tế, việc tăng cường kiểm soát xã hội và người dân đã diễn ra song hành với tiến trình mở cửa của Việt Nam kể từ khi chính sách Đổi mới được khởi xướng. Năm 2026, Việt Nam kỷ niệm 40 năm thực hiện chính sách mở cửa kinh tế. Ở đây có thể rút ra hai nhận định đáng chú ý. Thứ nhất, Việt Nam đã không ngừng mở rộng và đa dạng hóa các quan hệ kinh tế, chính trị với bên ngoài. Bên cạnh những đối tác truyền thống như Trung Quốc hay các nước ASEAN, mạng lưới đối tác quốc tế của Việt Nam ngày càng phong phú và rộng lớn hơn. Thứ hai, quá trình mở cửa kinh tế từ cuối những năm 1980 đã làm dấy lên những lo ngại trong giới lãnh đạo Việt Nam về nguy cơ tác động đến sự ổn định xã hội, cũng như sự gắn kết của giới trẻ với hệ thống. Vì vậy, đối với họ, mở cửa phải luôn đi đôi với kiểm soát và kỷ luật tập thể. Chính cách tiếp cận này lý giải tại sao hai yếu tố này - quá trình phát triển kinh tế và tăng cường kiểm soát - luôn đi liền với nhau. Tiếp theo đó, chúng ta thấy vai trò của lực lượng công an ngày càng được củng cố trong bộ máy nhà nước Việt Nam. Xu hướng này trở nên rõ nét hơn sau Đại hội đảng Cộng Sản lần thứ XIII cách đây 5 năm và đặc biệt kể từ khi ông Tô Lâm tiếp tục củng cố quyền lực tại Đại hội Đảng XIV vào đầu năm nay, đồng thời giữ hai chức vụ chủ tịch nước và tổng bí thư đảng Cộng Sản Việt Nam. Như vậy, lực lượng an ninh được đặt vào vị trí trung tâm trong chiến lược phát triển kinh tế của đất nước, với việc siết chặt kiểm soát trật tự xã hội thông qua hàng loạt công cụ pháp lý. Tiêu biểu là Luật An ninh mạng nổi tiếng, được hai bộ Công An Trung Quốc và Việt Nam cùng nhau suy nghĩ để soạn thảo, có hiệu lực ngày 01/01/2019, cùng với việc tăng cường hợp tác song phương trong lĩnh vực an ninh mà giới lãnh đạo Việt Nam đánh giá đặc biệt hiệu quả. RFI : Phải chăng công việc này đã có thể thực hiện được là nhờ bộ Công An ? Trong cuốn sách, ông đề cập ở câu hỏi số 41 đến “vai trò chính trị” của bộ này. Vậy cụ thể “vai trò chính trị” đó là gì ? Benoît de Tréglodé : Có hai điểm đáng chú ý. Thứ nhất, đó là việc ông Tô Lâm cùng các cộng sự từng công tác tại bộ Công An hiện đang nắm giữ nhiều vị trí quan trọng trong bộ máy nhà nước Việt Nam. Tuy nhiên, điều đáng quan tâm hơn là dần dần, thông qua các hoạt động liên quan đến công chúng, chủ quyền, an ninh và thậm chí cả đối ngoại, vai trò ngày càng nổi bật của chủ thể chính trị mới trong bộ máy nhà nước Việt Nam đã được thể hiện rõ : lực lượng cảnh sát và công an. Tôi lấy một ví dụ rất cụ thể là quan hệ song phương giữa Việt Nam với Trung Quốc, hoặc với Nga, Lào, Cam Bốt, hoặc một số nước láng giềng khác. Trước đây, các cuộc trao đổi song phương thường được tổ chức theo cơ chế 2+2 với đại diện từ bộ Ngoại Giao và Quốc Phòng. Tuy nhiên, trong vài tháng gần đây, cơ chế này đã được mở rộng thành 3+3, trong đó bộ Công An tham gia với vị thế ngang hàng với hai bộ trên. Điều đó có nghĩa là trong các cuộc gặp giữa Việt Nam và Trung Quốc nhằm thảo luận các vấn đề song phương, bên cạnh các nhà ngoại giao và đại diện quân đội, lực lượng công an của hai nước cũng tham gia vào quá trình trao đổi và xử lý các vấn đề chung. Việc đưa lực lượng công an tham gia ở cấp độ này phản ánh sự thay đổi trong bộ máy lãnh đạo Việt Nam. Rõ ràng là lãnh đạo Việt Nam đang trực tiếp nhấn mạnh vai trò chính trị quan trọng của lực lượng công an. RFI : Cuốn sách cũng nêu “Việc làm giàu cá nhân được khuyến khích với điều kiện người dân không tham gia chính trị”. Tại sao điều này lại quan trọng đối với Nhà nước-đảng ? Liệu thực tế được mô tả trong câu hỏi 30 (Tại sao người Việt Nam lại nói nhiều về tiền bạc?) có phải là cơ sở để thực hiện chính sách “giữ người dân tránh xa chính trị” hay không ? Benoît de Tréglodé : Trong cuốn sách, tôi nhiều lần trở lại với vấn đề này, bởi vì đây là một điểm then chốt để hiểu được sự tồn tại lâu dài của đảng Cộng Sản Việt Nam trong khoảng 40 năm qua. Đó là quá trình chuyển đổi từ một hệ tư tưởng mang tính giáo điều được du nhập từ bên ngoài - ở đây tôi sử dụng từ “giáo lý” (catéchisme) - vốn trong một thời gian dài được thể hiện qua chủ nghĩa Mác - Lênin dưới những hình thức được du nhập, điều chỉnh và thích nghi với bối cảnh văn hóa Việt Nam, sang một mô hình gần gũi hơn với xu hướng phát triển của các xã hội phương Tây hiện nay, đó là chủ nghĩa tư bản tự do. Mô hình này, đôi khi được thúc đẩy rất mạnh mẽ và dần dần trở thành một dạng “giáo lý chính trị” mới đối với đảng Cộng Sản Việt Nam. Như Đặng Tiểu Bình từng nói ở Trung Quốc năm 1979 : Kinh doanh làm giàu cho dân tộc, làm giàu cho người dân và làm rạng danh đất nước. Ngày nay, câu nói này có thể nghe không mới, nhưng vào đầu những năm 2000, đây vẫn là vấn đề gây nhiều tranh luận. Tại phiên họp toàn thể của Ban Chấp hành Trung ương khóa IX năm 2002, lần đầu tiên đảng Cộng Sản Việt Nam chấp nhận việc đảng viên có thể sở hữu doanh nghiệp tư nhân, tham gia hoạt động kinh doanh, đồng thời vẫn duy trì tư cách đảng viên. Kể từ đó, kinh doanh trở thành một yếu tố quan trọng trong văn hóa phát triển của Việt Nam, bao gồm cả hoạt động kinh doanh trong khu vực tư nhân và khu vực Nhà nước. Đó thực sự là “cơn địa chấn” đầu tiên bắt đầu từ đầu thế kỷ XXI và xu hướng này tiếp tục được củng cố. Năm 2025, Bộ Chính Trị đảng Cộng Sản Việt Nam ban hành Nghị quyết 68 về phát triển kinh tế tư nhân. Đây là một trong những văn kiện quan trọng, trong đó lần đầu tiên vai trò của khu vực kinh tế tư nhân được khẳng định rõ ràng là một trong những động lực quan trọng hàng đầu của nền kinh tế quốc gia. Như vậy, trọng tâm của quá trình chuyển đổi đã thay đổi trong vòng 40 năm qua. Hiện nay, đảng Cộng Sản Việt Nam hiểu rằng sự tồn tại lâu dài, bền vững và tương lai của đảng phụ thuộc vào sự phát triển của nền kinh tế Việt Nam, vào khả năng kinh doanh, làm giàu của người dân và theo đuổi vấn đề đó, chứ không phải là quan tâm đến chính trị. VOV1 - Bộ Tư lệnh liên quân Hàn Quốc và Mỹ cho biết lực lượng quân đội hai nước này đang tiến hành một đợt huấn luyện hậu cần quân sự quy mô lớn nhất từ trước đến nay tại Hàn Quốc.Huấn luyện hậu cần quân sự Hàn – Mỹ là hoạt động được nối lại sau 9 năm, kể từ khi bị gián đoạn vào năm 2017, và sẽ được tổ chức định kỳ 2 năm 1 lần. Lần này, các khoa mục chủ yếu được tiến hành theo hình thức cơ động dã ngoại, với kịch bản vận chuyển binh sỹ, vũ khí, đạn dược, nhiên liệu… ra tiền tuyến trong trường hợp xảy ra chiến sự trên bán đảo Triều Tiên.Diễn tập hậu cần quân sự Hàn – Mỹ 2026 được bắt đầu từ ngày 13/7 tại một số đơn vị hành chính thuộc các tỉnh Gyeongsangbuk và Gangwon – tiếp giáp biên giới liên Triều, với 2.400 binh sỹ Hàn Quốc, 2.000 binh sỹ Mỹ, 600 khí tài bao gồm các quân hạm, xe vận tải và máy bay quân sự. Đây là quy mô lớn nhất trong lịch sử của hoạt động này.Theo kịch bản huấn luyện, các đơn vị tham gia không sử dụng các cảng biển, mà bốc dỡ vật tư, trang thiết bị… ngay trên các bờ biển, sau đó sử dụng đường bộ và đường không để chuyển tiếp đến các địa điểm định sẵn. Phía Hàn Quốc đã sử dụng hệ thống hỗ trợ bốc dỡ phức hợp trên biển, do lực lượng hải quân nước này vừa đưa vào sử dụng trong năm 2025, để đưa vật tư, trang thiết bị từ các tàu quân sự của Mỹ lên bờ. Ngoài ra, kịch bản còn giả định tình huống có hàng trăm binh sỹ bị thương để thao luyện khoa mục cứu trợ y tế tổng hợp ngay trên thực địa.Các kịch bản này là nhằm nâng cao khả năng hiệp đồng tác chiến giữa liên quân Hàn – Mỹ trong mọi tình huống. Các tướng lĩnh của Bộ Tư lệnh liên quân Hàn – Mỹ đánh giá huấn luyện lần này góp phần phát triển năng lực tương trợ cả trên biển, trên bộ và trên không của các binh chủng, đồng thời khẳng định sẽ tiếp tục duy trì, thúc đẩy hoạt động huấn luyện chung trong thời gian tới. VOV1 - Nhân dịp kỷ niệm 79 năm Ngày Thương binh - Liệt sĩ (27/7/1947 - 27/7/2026), sáng 17/7, tại Hà Nội, Cục Văn thư và Lưu trữ nhà nước (Bộ Nội vụ) sẽ tổ chức trưng bày tài liệu lưu trữ và kỷ vật của cán bộ đi B với chủ đề "Thanh xuân gửi lại".Chương trình diễn ra từ ngày 17/7 đến dịp Quốc khánh 2/9/2026 tại trụ sở Cục Văn thư và Lưu trữ nhà nước, số 12 Đào Tấn, phường Giảng Võ, thành phố Hà Nội.Không chỉ là hoạt động nghiệp vụ, sự kiện trưng bày này còn là lời tri ân sâu sắc đối với thế hệ đã hiến dâng tuổi thanh xuân cho Tổ quốc, đồng thời khẳng định giá trị của tài liệu lưu trữ trong việc gìn giữ ký ức lịch sử dân tộc và lan tỏa truyền thống “Đền ơn đáp nghĩa”.Điểm nhấn của sự kiện là không gian trưng bày “Ký ức đi B” với hơn 100 tài liệu, hình ảnh và kỷ vật gốc quý giá. Công chúng sẽ được tiếp cận những lá đơn tình nguyện, cuốn nhật ký, thư từ, ảnh gia đình cùng nhiều kỷ vật được các cán bộ đi B mang theo hoặc gửi lại trước ngày lên đường. He wasn't entirely wrong! The correct name is Ardea alba.While alba means "white," Ardea is Latin for "heron." It also ties back to the ancient myth by everyone's favorite Roman poet Ovid, who wrote about a bird rising directly from the ashes of the burned city of Ardea. What's the Deal With Axolotls?We wondered if the axolotl is in the same genus as the Jefferson and blue spotted salamander (Ambystoma) and yes they are!Species: A. mexicanum (Axolotl) Unlike most members of Ambystomatidae—which typically metamorphose into terrestrial adults—the axolotl exhibits a trait called neoteny (or paedomorphosis). This is where an organism retains juvenile or larval traits into adulthood. Axolotls retains its aquatic, larval features (like its signature feathery external gills) into adulthood and spends its entire life in the water Bill's Hard Claim on ID'ing Jefferson Salamanders Bill said there is no way we could tell if it was a Jefferson salamander: is that true? Bill was basically right if we're talking about visually confirming a female-looking salamander in a blue-spotted/Jefferson overlap zone. Many unisexual individuals cannot be confidently identified by sight, and genetic testing is the clean answer. But during the breeding season, a male with a swollen cloaca is not part of the all-female unisexual lineage, so that can help narrow things down. So, a male in breeding condition can sometimes be identified much more confidently than a female/unisexual-looking animal, but you need to have serious knowledge about species location, morphology, and breeding-season characteristics. The Jefferson Complex vs. the Bigger Unisexual Salamander SituationDuring the episode, Bill had a “wait, what are we even talking about?” moment while Steve was explaining the huge all-female/unisexual Ambystoma salamander lineage.Steve was talking about the big-picture version: a bizarre evolutionary group that can involve genomes from several mole salamander species, including Blue-spotted, Jefferson, Small-mouthed, Streamside, and Tiger Salamanders.Bill, though, was thinking what we hear more about in the Northeast and Great Lakes region: the “Jefferson complex,” or the Blue-spotted/Jefferson Salamander mess. Around here, that usually means you can't usually ID a Jefferson Salamanders or a Blue-spotted Salamander down to species because the sally in front of you may belong to the all-female, polyploid lineage that can't be confidently sorted out just by looking at them.So Bill's question was basically: “Hold on. Is this identification nightmare only a Jefferson/Blue-spotted thing, or does it happen with the other species too?”And the answer is: yep. It can happen with the others too.The narrower Jefferson complex usually refers to the Blue-spotted/Jefferson part of the story, especially in places where those are the main overlapping species. But when scientists zoom out and include the other players (Small-mouthed, Streamside, and Eastern Tiger Salamanders) they usually refer to the whole thing as the unisexual Ambystoma lineage.So the practical field takeaway is this: in places where these species overlap, a female-looking Ambystoma salamander may be impossible to identify with confidence by appearance alone. Even experts may only be making an educated guess unless they use genetic testing. Measuring red blood cell size can help estimate ploidy (basically, whether the animal has extra chromosome sets) but DNA testing is the real way to know which genomes are actually in there. Is Duckweed the Smallest Flowering Plant? Yes, but specifically a microscopic type of it. The world's smallest flowering plants belong to the genus Wolffia - Often referred to as "rootless duckweed" or "watermeal," they are the tiniest members of the duckweed family (Lemnaceae) Individual Wolffia plants are usually less than 1 mm long, roughly the size of a pinhead or cornmeal, and the flowers are correspondingly microscopic.Unlike standard duckweed (Lemna), Wolffia plants do not have roots and appear simply as tiny floating green spheres or oval seeds.The plant produces the world's smallest flower, which forms in a tiny depression on the plant's top surface.Because they are so small and have highly efficient asexual budding, they can easily cover a pond in dense mats before you ever notice an individual plant. Can be found across temperate and tropical regions of North, Central, and South America Correction: Ed Yong's An Immense World (UV, not Infrared)During the episode, Bill mentioned Ed Yong's phenomenal book, An Immense World, and noted that researchers are increasingly discovering how many animals can see in the infrared spectrum. His memory slipped slightly on this one! Yong actually discusses the growing scientific realization that many animals see in the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum, not infrared. (Though as you'll see below, dragonflies do have a few tricks up their sleeves on the other end of the spectrum). Gordon's Question: Infrared Vision & Dragonfly MatingBill's misremembering of what was in An Immense World was prompted by Gordon asking a fantastic question during the recording: Can dragonflies see in the infrared spectrum, and if they can, are they using it to navigate during migration?First, a quick clarification: when most of us hear “infrared,” we immediately picture thermal imaging — animals glowing in the dark, Predator vision, that whole thing. That is not what we're talking about here. Dragonflies do not appear to see heat signatures.What they may be able to see is near-infrared — light just beyond the deepest red wavelengths visible to humans. Near-infrared is not heat vision. It is more like an invisible extension of red.According to a recent study published in January 2026 by researchers in Osaka, Japan, some dragonfly species have visual pigments that are sensitive to extremely long red wavelengths, possibly reaching into the near-infrared edge of the spectrum. That alone is pretty wild. But the discovery also highlights a striking example of parallel evolution between insects and primates. Millions of years ago, the ancestors of humans and other primates evolved molecular changes that helped produce red-sensitive vision. This new research suggests that some dragonflies may have independently evolved a similar molecular tuning mechanism for detecting red light. However, while primate red vision operates within the visible spectrum, some dragonflies appear to have pushed that sensitivity even farther, toward the boundary between deep red and near-infrared.So what are they doing with this ability? Probably not navigating migration, at least as far as we know.The better-supported idea is that this long-wavelength vision helps dragonflies identify mates quickly in flight. Male and female dragonflies can reflect red and near-infrared light differently, especially against green vegetation. So for an animal making split-second decisions while zipping around at high speed, that extra visual contrast could be a big deal. So to answer Gordon's question, dragonflies may be seeing farther into the red/near-infrared edge of the spectrum than we can, but based on what researchers currently know, they're probably using that ability for rapid sex recognition, not long-distance navigation. It's more of a high-speed dragonfly dating filter than infrared GPS.The Missing Piece: Visual Cues and "Leading Lines" in MigrationOne big element Bill neglected to mention in covering how dragonfies navigate during migration is the VISUAL piece – that they also use what they're seeing! That is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Dragonflies are also extremely visual animals. Those huge compound eyes are not just for decoration. So, what they're seeing is likely a key piece in their migration toolbox. Migrating dragonflies are often observed moving along major landscape features: coastlines, mountain ridges, river valleys, and other long, continuous edges. Biologists sometimes refer to these kinds of features as leading lines, because they can help guide or funnel migrating animals across the landscape.That doesn't mean a dragonfly is looking down and thinking, “Ah yes, the Susquehanna River. I'll take this south.” But these landscape features can still matter in several ways.Coastlines can keep migrants from drifting too far over open water, which is risky for an insect that eventually needs to land, rest, and feed.Mountain ridges and long hillsides can create useful air currents and updrafts, allowing dragonflies to ride favorable winds and conserve energy.River corridors can provide both a visual pathway and good stopover habitat, with water, vegetation, and plenty of small flying insects to eat when they need to refuel.The overall migration story for dragonflies probably isn't “dragonflies have one magic compass.” It's more like they are combining a bunch of cues at once: the visual structure of the landscape below them, as well as the elements covered during the episode. Steve's Questions: Resident vs. Migratory Green Darners & The Thermal Genetic SwitchDuring the episode, Steve asked two really good questions about Common Green Darners: if some are migratory and some are resident, how do they know which group to mate with? And could temperature be the thing that nudges a young darner down one path or the other?The first answer is surprisingly simple: they probably don't know, and they probably don't care.For a long time, researchers assumed these groups were reproductively isolated, believing residents emerged and died before the migratory cohort reached adulthood, but modern research has overturned this idea. According to a comprehensive review by Michael L. May and John H. Matthews, adult flight periods absolutely overlap in mid-summer, and genetic testing reveals zero genetic differentiation between the groups. The entire continental population belongs to a single, randomly mating gene pool. So when a Common Green Darner is ready to mate, it is probably not checking whether the other darner is from the “resident” or “migratory” team. It is just mating with another mature Common Green Darner in the same airspace. Very romantic. Very dragonfly.Steve's second question gets at something even more interesting: what makes one generation migrate while another stays put?This is where temperature, day length, and seasonal timing seem to matter a lot. A Green Darner nymph developing in warm water during long summer days may be pushed toward faster development. That can produce adults that emerge, feed heavily, build up energy reserves, and migrate south in late summer or fall.But if nymphs are developing as temperatures drop and days get shorter, their development can slow down. Instead of rushing to become adults, they may overwinter as aquatic nymphs and emerge the following year. Those individuals can then become part of the resident breeding population in northern ponds.So Steve's instinct was basically right: environmental conditions appear to play a huge role in shaping whether a darner develops quickly and migrates, or slows down and overwinters.The only thing to be careful about is the phrase “genetic switch.” There probably are changes in gene expression involved. Temperature and day length can absolutely affect how insects develop, but in Common Green Darners, we should probably think of it less as a single switch being flipped and more as a whole developmental pathway being shaped by the environment.The short version: migratory and resident Green Darners are not separate species or rival dragonfly factions.
