Pieter Lefferts is a visual artist, author, and musician who draws deeply from the natural world for creative inspiration and moxie. Over the years he has sought deeper communion with Nature to find balance and better understand himself and the world around him. In this work, he eschews perfection and instead embraces authenticity and intentionality, wherein perfection unfolds as the sum of the parts of an idea explored and life lived.Pieter is a student of shamanism, indigenous wisdom, science, and natural history, which, in combination, inform his artistic process. He is a lover of stories and people and strives to live his life with humor, grace, and a reliable Adirondack guide boat from which to paint. His award-winning artwork is in national and international collections. He has received numerous awards for his artistry and as an arts educator. Litchfield Magazine named him one of Litchfield County's 50 Most Influential People of 2012.Widely collected, his work has been juried into the renowned Pastel Society of America's annual 'Enduring Brilliance' exhibition in New York City and the Northeast National Pastel Exhibition in Old Forge, NY, in which he received the Lee Award for artistic excellence. He exhibits in group shows throughout the region, including Keene Arts in Keene, NY. His recent solo exhibit at the DM Hunt Library in Falls Village, CT, included an Earth Day reading from his award-winning novel, What The Kek Kek Saw, a fable published by UnCollected Press in 2022 and chosen as a Nautilus Book Awards Gold Winner for Young Adult Fiction in 2023.Pieter is the founder of Northlight Art Center, located in Amenia, NY, a venue for aspiring artists to study with him in a professional atelier environment. He is a master teaching artist whose knowledge of techniques and materials, coupled with his wit and wisdom, encourages students of all backgrounds to pursue their personal discovery through making art. This episode of Main Street Moxie is proudly sponsored by Meadowscapes and Elyse Harney Real Estate.ResourcesPieter Lefferts WebsiteThe Raw Art ReviewSocial MediaPieter Lefferts InstagramPieter Lefferts FacebookSupport the show

NW CARES is the Northwest Coalition of Agencies Related to Elder Services in Canaan, Falls Village, Lakeville/Salisbury, Norfolk, Sharon, Cornwall, Warren and Kent. Our mission is to identify, clarify and seek solutions to issues in service and activities that affect the elderly and their families. And since these possible solutions affect young as well as old, our scope extends to programs available to all ages. This resource guide was developed to provide information to help you choose more effectively from the array of services available in our area. Ever since 2013, the “Northwest CARES Help Book” has been a useful reference source for all concerned with the well-being of older people, their families and friends, as well as their care givers. We invite readers to help us improve the publication and keep it up to date with corrections and additions. Our special thanks go to the volunteers who worked hard to update the book and we also thank those towns and organizations who assisted in funding its production, especially the former Salisbury Visiting Nurses Service now the VNA of Litchfield County. The list of all donors can be seen below. NW CARES has tried to provide accurate information, but is not responsible for any errors in this publication. We welcome your corrections and additions. Though the United Church of Christ is under construction, games and the cakewalk will happen on its grounds, and a smaller lunch menu will be available. Falls Village will be having a Memorial Day parade! Line up will be Monday, May 30th at 9:30am at Kellogg School. The parade will start at 9:45am and be at the green for the 10am ceremony. Calling all veterans, tractors, your old car, your decorated bike, Girl Scout and Boy Scout uniforms, little league uniforms, decorated wagons for your little ones and any other patriotic regalia. Kent — The parade will start from Kent Center School at 9:30 a.m. In the event of rain there will not be a parade; however, ceremonies will be held at the KCS entrance. The parade goes along Route 341 to St. Andrew's cemetery, then to the veteran's memorial, the Civil War memorial and then north on Main Street (Route 7) to the library, ending at the cemetery at Kent Congregational Church. North Canaan — The parade starts from Town Hall at 10:30 a.m. and proceeds to the Doughboy monument on Route 44 for the ceremony and guest speaker. Salisbury The parade starts at 10 a.m. heading east on Main Street (Route 44) and then north on Undermountain Road (Route 41) to the cemetery for a ceremony. Norfolk's Memorial Day will follow tradition Monday when its sprightly parade steps off at 9 a.m. from the Town Hall parking lot and proceeds to the Town Green, and thence to Memorial Green for speeches. The veterans memorial at Memorial Green has been restored and brass plaques listing veterans' names were replaced Wednesday. The Region 7 band will be in the parade this year and an Air Force flyover is anticipated. At noon, the fire department will hold its annual 5-mile road race, starting at the intersection of Mountain and Westside roads. Sharon — The parade starts at 10 a.m. and proceeds down Main Street to the veterans' memorial for a ceremony and speeches. Amenia — Ceremony hosted by the VFW Post #5444 at Amenia Fountain Square at 11 a.m. Dover — Parade and ceremony hosted by the Dover American Legion Post #1949 on Monday, May 30, with a solemn march to the veterans' section of the South Dover Cemetery in Wingdale, at 9:30 a.m., stepping off from the Wingdale firehouse at Route 55 off of Route 22; the service will start at 10 a.m. in the cemetery. Millerton — The Millerton American Legion Post #178 will conduct its traditional morning cemetery repass on Memorial Day from the Post Home beginning at 6 a.m. by visiting local cemeteries. The line-up for the annual Memorial Day parade will begin on Century Boulevard at 9:30 a.m. Community and youth organizations are invited to participate. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. and proceed to Main Street, where it will make a brief stop at the Webutuck Creek Bridge to remember those who were lost in the nation's Naval Services and Merchant Marine. Following the parade, participants will proceed to the Irondale Cemetery for a brief service before going to Veterans Park for the annual Memorial Day program. Pine Plains — Parade and ceremony hosted by Shekomeko American Legion Post #426 and Pine Plains VFW Post #5519 at 10:30 a.m. The parade will then proceed from the Pine Plains firehouse to Town Clock Memorial to Evergreen Cemetery “Book Sale Under the Tent” CORNWALL – Cornwall Library's “Book Sale Under the Tent” will take place May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as June 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. and June 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. at 30 Pine St. in Cornwall Village.

On February 9 1969 the fortunes of New York City Mayor John Lindsay were riding high. Mentioned often as possible Presidential contender in the upcoming decade of the 70's he had done much to win the support of Democrats and Republicans, serving a Democratic city as a Republican. His policies where often hailed as progressive and finically responsible. But his future in politics was about to be undone by the weather. Warned in advance of an impending storm his administration was ill prepared. Budget cuts had slashed the available snowplows by 40% and a recent strike with city workers has not been fully overcome. What became known as the “Mayor Lindsay Storm” dumped 15.3" at New York City; Central Long Island 12-18"; Scarsdale, NY 24"; Falls Village, CT 35"; Bridgeport, CT 17.7"; Hartford, CT 15.8"; Bedford, MA 25"; Blue Hill 21"; Boston 11.1"; Portland, ME 21.5"; 800 cars stranded on Tappan-Zee Bridge. Property damage totaled more than $10 million in New England. Thousands of homes lost utility service. Drifts reached 10-20' deep. Thousands were stranded on highways, the New York Thruway was closed from New York City to Albany. The storm was named for Mayor Lindsay's failure to clear the streets of New York City and more than 40 New Yorkers died as a result of the storm. Worst hit was the NYC borough of Queens where 21 people died. The storm came to a swift end late in the day of February 9 and with it came the end of Mayor Lindsey political career, despite being re-elected in 1969 he never held political office again after leaving office as Mayor, despite unsuccessful runs for senate and president. Food and Land in the Shmita Year: A Release from Old Paradigms by Carly Sugar, Geez 63

Carly Sugar looks to the ancient, radical cycle of rest for the land in Jewish tradition. Carly is based in Detroit, Michigan on Anishinaabe land and directs the Adamah Farming Fellowship in Falls Village, Connecticut on Mochican land. Her work explores the intersection of food skills, Jewish ritual, social change, and community building. This piece appears in Geez 63: Sound the Trumpet. In this moment of massive debt overload, mass incarceration, and rampant land destruction, this issue asks: What would the practice of Jubilee look like today? We dream together of reparations, debt forgiveness, prison abolition, land restoration, and a whole lot of radical rest.
