Plus a deepdive into the UK's science and technology strategy. Join the US in deregulating? Or join Europe and actively drain science capacity from it? And of course 'Wokey Dokey' and 'Grin And Share It'. ***SPONSOR US AT KO-FI.COM/QUIETRIOTPOD*** “As a campaigning organisation, you have to go to where people are - the spaces that they occupy, the informational areas that they're in, and in person. You have to meet them where they are both physically and in terms of opinion, whether ministers or voters.” “What we are talking about is not a political party winning, but rather how do you move all of UK society in the same direction. At each and every level [rejoining the EU] has to be made relevant to each and every community - personally, regionally, demographically.” “The gov't knows where the public is. The polling has been very clear for some time. The single most influential group that needs to step up right now is business - every size, every industry, every location. They need to step and push gov't towards EU alignment during this critical period in the run up to the [Starmer - von der Leyen] summit.”  “There is a real opportunity right now, given the way Trump is behaving, for a ‘brain drain' from the States and diversion of talent that would usually flow to the States, especially from Global South countries worried about the racism and the barriers to funding. The UK and Europe should get together to move on this.” “With the falling apart of USAID, the soft power opportunity there, through science and health security, is huge. This is where both the UK and the EU are strong and trusted.” “Population decline is an existential threat to mature Western economies and soon they will find that they are actually in competition for immigration. The first such country to realise this, will reap huge benefits.” CALLS TO ACTION LINKS: Click here to ask your MP to read Best for Britain's Growth Report. Sign up for European Movement here. Donald Macleod explores Henry Purcell's LondonHenry Purcell was the most important English composer of the era, described as the "Orpheus Britannicus" for his ability to combine Baroque counterpoint with dramatic settings of English words. He composed music for the church, the royal court, the theatre and for England's newly emerging concert scene, with an intelligence and creativity that marked him out as one of the most original composers in all of Europe. More than anything, though, he composed music for London – the city where he lived all of his short life. This week, Donald Macleod explores the city during Purcell's lifetime and London's effect on a man who lays claim to being England's greatest composer. During Purcell's childhood, it was a city reeling from civil war, the disastrous spread of disease, and the destruction wreaked by the Great Fire. We'll explore London's churches, and music Purcell wrote for them, especially Westminster Abbey, where Purcell was organist, the state of London's theatre scene in Purcell's day, and the changing demands for music from the various monarchs of the composer's lifetime. Demystifying Sus Chords (And Why They Sound So Good)

Guitar Serious Fun

Enjoy the chart below, with transcript…Have you ever seen the abbreviation “Sus” in a chart and thought, “What does that actually mean?”  Today we're going to talk about…suspensions with music on the guitar.I encourage you to catch the video version of this article while it's available. This way, you'll see and hear everything demonstrated. You can find the video right here: If you've ever seen a suspenseful movie, or if you've ever had the unfortunate experience of having an account suspended, or your driver's license suspended, you have experienced suspense. But what do all of these scenarios have in common? They are all temporary. A suspenseful movie can't be suspenseful the entire time – it just wouldn't work. A suspended account is usually restored to good standing when the balance is paid, and a suspended driver's license can eventually be reinstated. So, I'm not talking about something being permanently taken away – I'm talking about something being temporarily suspended, and eventually – wait for it – resolved. So, let's take a moment to discuss what suspensions can look and sound like on the guitar, and why they're important. So, when we see the term “sus” in a chart, that's short for a SUSpended chord. First of all, the most common chord we'll find suspensions for is going to be on the Dominant, the V chord in a Major key. And second of all, the most common type of suspension or “sus” chord we're going to experience is the “sus4.” We could go in all sorts of additional directions, but for now, let's keep things pretty simple. So, let's say we're in the key of G Major, a very guitar-friendly key. The Dominant or V chord in G is D.  But today, we're not just going to play it as a D Major chord, we're going to play it as a Dsus4 chord. Now, my background in music began with a classical degree, which included several years of collegiate music theory, so I'm going to offer you an additional level of musicality here. It involves a three-word process.  That process is: “Preparation,” “Suspension,” and “Resolution.”Because, if we think about it, it's nice to be able to prepare ourselves for suspense, so we can anticipate it just a bit. The plot thickens in a movie. We get a warning notice that our account is about to be suspended. The cop car behind us fires up the lights on his roof to let us know we're about to be pulled over, which could lead to a suspended license. So “Preparation” is the first step. The second step is the actual “Suspension.” This is where things are in a temporary state of suspense that is typically not restful. The suspenseful scene happens in the movie, putting us on the edge of our seats. Our account is suspended, so we can't have access to it. Our license is suspended so it's temporarily taken away. So, with this suspension, there's a bit of tension. There's tension, but in this musical scenario, this is a good sort of tension. But as I mentioned, we aren't going to stay in suspense indefinitely. Eventually, we get to the third step, “Resolution,” where the Suspension ends. The suspense in the movie plot winds down, if only temporarily, as it comes to a resting point in the story. The account is restored. The license is reinstated. So, again, think through those three words as we continue - “Preparation,” “Suspension,” and “Resolution.”So here we are in the key of G Major. The I chord in G Major is…G Major, right? The IV chord is C Major, and the V chord is D Major. Now, to bring this right to your fingers in an easy manner, I'll actually use some “color” chords, so the chords will actually be easier to play, and they also won't be pure Major chords, but they'll still totally work for this exercise. The most important note in this suspension exercise is the high G note on the 3rd fret of the 1st string.  I want you to watch this note carefully, because it's going to remain for three chords, but it will have a different identity in each.I'll analyze the first chord as a G5 chord with no 3rd.  So, in the G chord, this high G is the root, right? But then, when we move to a C2 chord for the IV chord, we still keep that G up on the 3rd fret of the 1st string, and now it's the 5th of that chord. It's at this stage that we start to feel the “Preparation.” In other words, we're ramping up to the Suspension.Next up is the V chord, D, but we're going to keep the high G note on that 3rd string, thereby rendering this chord a Dsus4. Why is it a Dsus4? Because the high G is now the 4th degree of the D chord. Now, typically a D Major Chord won't have a G in it, but rather an F#, right? But here, with this chord, the Vsus4 is providing the Suspension we're after. Right now, it's not a Major chord. So now we've been put in suspense. It's not a restful chord. It's a chord where we're temporarily “on edge” just a bit.But what follows a Suspension, ideally? You know it – Resolution. All we need to do is take that high G note that we've had with us all along, and let it resolve down to the F#, thereby establishing the D Major chord, on its way back to…the G chord. See how the Vsus4 chord moves to a Major V chord, and finally back to the I chord? It's actually quite pleasing to the ear. (Catch the video for the demonstration of this.)Is there more? Always. Can we create a Sus2 chord? Yep.Can we create suspensions with 7 chords? Yeah buddy. Can we play suspensions as bar chords? Of course. Can we play a suspension without preparing or resolving it? We're technically not playing them functionally as suspensions, but…sure. Can suspensions resolve to minor chords? Yes, but that tends to sound a little more “Foreign” in some cases (catch the video for my music reference.)As you can see, we can go much further. But it all starts here with this simple process of KNOWING what a suspension is, and then experimenting with the intentional approach of Preparing, Suspending and Resolving. DescriptionMind Games: The Psychology Behind a Solo Performance in 60 Seconds. Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactOne of the most difficult violin concertos is Niccolò Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major. Known for its technical demands, it features rapid scales, double stops, harmonics, and wide leaps that push the limits of a violinist's dexterity and control. The concerto also requires expressive phrasing while navigating these complexities, blending virtuosity with musicality. Its intense demands on both technique and endurance make it a formidable challenge for even the most skilled violinists.__________________________________________________________________About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. Do Guitar Chord Fingerings Matter?

Enjoy charts and tables below, with transcript…If you play an A Major chord like most people, you're missing out. I'll show you why, and what to do about it.I encourage you to catch the video version of this article while it's available so you can watch me demonstrate these concepts. You can find the video right here:Chords exist in context. Am I right? We typically won't play a song that consists of a single chord, because that would be…boring. So, if we want to play chords well in context, this begs the question – do guitar chord fingerings really matter? Let's find out.I'm going to list three Major keys that are pretty common with guitar players: the keys of A, E and D Major. Which chord do all of these keys have in common? The A Major chord. In the key of A, the A chord is the Tonic, the I chord. In the key of E, the A chord is the Subdominant, the Major IV chord. And in the key of D, the A chord is the Dominant, the Major V chord. It's a pretty widely-used chord. And yet… a lot of guitar players are really making more work for themselves with the fingering they use.  Now, when we fret a note, it's best to press down as close to the fret as we can, for a clean articulation.Unfortunately, some of the guitar educational materials I've come across teach the A chord with fingers 1, 2, and 3 in a row. Even if we slightly adjust to fingers 2, 3, and 4, the situation is not improved by much, because there's not quite enough room for our adjacent fingers to be well-situated on the second fret in these configurations. So, what do we do?  For almost 30 years, I have taken the approach I'm about to show you, and it is truly a game-changer. And it's actually really simple. Check it out.I use fingers 2, 1 and then 3. A better way to get situated is to place 2 and 3 on the 2nd fret, like you're voicing an open A7 chord and then drop in the 1st finger, wedging it right between those other two fingers.Again, not all three notes will be right up next to the fret, but this is still a vast improvement to what we had before. Remember, even if a finger is not right next to the fret, it can still sound clean; it just needs to press harder, the further it is away from the fret. So now that you've been exposed to this new fingering for the open A Major chord, what can I do to validate its usefulness? That's right – I'm going to place it in context.Remember how we talked about the keys of A, E and D? Let's say I wanted to move from A to E and back, whether that's in the key of A or the key of E. Both scenarios apply here.Watch what happens if I use the “old” way of fretting the A chord.  If I start with the less optimal fingering, I have to lift all three fingers to move to the E chord.  Then when I go back, I again have to lift all three fingers. Doable, but not ideal. (The accompanying video demonstrates this clearly.)What if I tried our new and improved fingering? The first finger stays on the 3rd string and provides an anchor point because although it slides down a single fret, it doesn't have to be lifted from the string. Way better. (Watch the video for the economy of movement.)Ok, how about the transition from A to D and back? Even though I do have something of an anchor note on the 2nd string with my 3rd finger, the other two fingers have to re-locate entirely both ways.It works, but is there a better way? Yep. Our new way.Try it, and then watch with delight as only one finger needs to lift up to relocate as the other two fingers provide anchor points both directions. So, not only is it a cleaner articulation to play A Major this way, we have a much cleaner transition to and from a couple very closely-related chords.  So yes, I believe guitar chord fingerings do matter. This may be significant to you, or it may not.But if we're going to play this chord a few thousand times in our lifetime, wouldn't it be better to play it more effectively? And wouldn't it be nice to gain even more visual independence from this chord in context?Hopefully this gave you a window into my approach to teaching the guitar, and how I like to zoom in for more precision and artistry, which enhances our musicianship and just helps us PLAY better.Side note: here at GuitarSerious Fun, I published an article/video called “Do Guitar Chord Voicings Matter?” I encourage you to check that out as well. You can find us on social media with GuitarSuccess4U on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. No less a person than Mozart, who was also a personal friend, hailed him as a ‘true genius'. Even so, Linley's life was troubled. He and his siblings were ruthlessly driven by their ambitious father. He saw his beloved sister become fodder for the celebrity-hungry gossip mongers of the British press and must have wondered if he might be next. This week, Donald Macleod follows the composer's story, using Bach's own account as his guide. If, after listening to this conversation you want to hear more (and I think you will!), take a listen to him and his co-author, Marcus Buckingham, talking on the HBR Idea Cast about lie #5 - the idea that people need feedback - and how most managers think about giving feedback in an utterly wrong way - which is also an idea we dive into later in our conversation today. Prior to Cisco, Ashley spent fourteen years at Deloitte as a consultant and as the Chief Learning Officer for Leadership and Professional development.  His book, "The Problem with Change: and the Essential Nature of Human Performance" is about what we might call lie number 10: the idea that change is good and that leaders must lead change in order to be good leaders. Wholesale belief in this lie has created what Ashley calls  “Life in the Blender” - driven by what I've heard some folks refer to as “The Reorg of the Day”. I love love love the musical analogies Ashley uses to describe leadership - not as the lead guitar or first violin, but as the Ground Bass - the principal structural element of a musical piece. The Leader can help teams navigate change by playing a backbeat of stability and consistency, supporting a range of free expression and variation. Find a link to Pachelbel's Canon here and listen to the Goldberg variations here (which he mentions in the extended version of the analogy, later on in the conversation). What is that Ground Bass? For Ashley it's about helping people feel seen, connected, celebrated and clear on the story of the meaning of their contributions to the work.  This perspective aligns very well with the message Bree Larson offered here some years back. Bree is a Partner at SYPartners and shared her framework around the challenges of designing organizational change - that most change can easily result in one or more of the Six Types of Loss she identified: Loss of Control Loss of Pride Loss of Narrative Loss of Time Loss of Competence Loss of Familiarity  All of which Ashley suggests leaders can deflect or reduce through 9 key leadership skills that he outlines in depth in his book: Make space  Forge undeniable competence  Share secrets  Be predictable  Speak real words  Honor ritual  Focus most on teams Radicalize HR  Pave the way Prior to releasing the book, Ashley wrote a New York Times Op-Ed piece which is a blockbuster and is an even more succinct, poignant and straight-on condemnation of modern corporate leadership - it is also highly worth reading. This book feels a bit like a Burn Book - Ashley is pointing out fundamental misconceptions at the heart of corporate life in a direct and unvarnished manner - in the hope that some leaders will listen and start doing things differently - Leading in a way that takes into account how humans really are and what we really need to thrive at work. Ashley is very clear: companies need to look beyond wellness initiatives and corporate cheerleading and shift their focus to the fundamental environment of daily work. The effects of a corporate life caught in constant change are more than clear to anyone who's been through it: uncertainty, a lack of control, a sense of unbelonging and of displacement, and a loss of meaning As Goodall says, “The ultimate job of leadership is not disruption and it is not to create change; it is to create a platform for human contribution, to create the conditions in which people can do the best work of their lives.” Also - do listen for an extended exchange around minute 40 where we talk about the power of praise and the Paul Hollywood handshake - if you're not a Great British Bake off fan, there's still time to watch a few episodes to get in the mood - or at least witness the effect of the Hollywood Handshake on Friends star David Schwimmer here. Opening Song: King of Love (https://open.spotify.com/track/2VUqTf9xTu9iTcElzOdy1F?si=8a0471e95c144958) by Adam Palmer, Jonathan Smith, Matthew Hein, Stephanie Kulla, and Stuart Garrard Lyrics: The King of Love my Shepherd is Whose goodness faileth never I nothing lack if I am His And He is mine forever And He is mine forever Where streams of living water flow My ransomed soul He leadeth And where the verdant pastures grow With food celestial feedeth Never failing Ruler of my heart Everlasting Lover of my soul On the mountain high or in the valley low The King of Love my Shepherd is The King of Love my Shepherd is Lost and foolish off I strayed But yet in love He sought me And on His shoulder gently laid And home rejoicing brought me In death's dark veil I fear no ill With Thee dear Lord beside me Thy rod and staff my comfort still Thy cross before to guide me Oh Hallelujah Hallelujah Oh Hallelujah Hallelujah And so through all the length of days Thy goodness faileth never Good Shepherd may I sing Your praise Within Your house forever Within Your house forever Passage: The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says to the shepherds: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who have been feeding themselves! Shouldn't the shepherds feed their flock? 3 You eat the fat, wear the wool, and butcher the fattened animals, but you do not tend the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty. 5 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd; they became food for all the wild animals when they were scattered. 6 My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high hill. My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and there was no one searching or seeking for them. 7 “ ‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. 8 As I live — this is the declaration of the Lord God — because my flock, lacking a shepherd, has become prey and food for every wild animal, and because my shepherds do not search for my flock, and because the shepherds feed themselves rather than my flock, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! 10 “ ‘This is what the Lord God says: Look, I am against the shepherds. I will demand my flock from them and prevent them from shepherding the flock. The shepherds will no longer feed themselves, for I will rescue my flock from their mouths so that they will not be food for them. -- Ezekiel 34:1-10 (CSB) Musical Reflection: “Air on the G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: The slow, descending bass line creates musical “steps” in an elegant fashion while a suspended melody several octaves above creates a satisfying combination of sound registers. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Sir Antonio Pappano is one of the world's most acclaimed conductors. He started work at the age of ten as an accompanist for his father, who worked as a singing teacher. After leading orchestras in Brussels and Oslo, Pappano was appointed as musical director of the Royal Opera House in 2002. Stepping down after 22 years leading Covent Garden, he has joined the London Symphony Orchestra as chief conductor. Antonio Pappano was knighted in 2012 and conducted the orchestra at the coronation of King Charles III in 2023. An award winning recording artist, he has conducted on over 70 live and studio albums.Antonio Pappano tells John Wilson about his upbringing in a central London council flat, the son of Italian immigrants, and his love of music from an early age. He recalls the significance of receiving his grade 5 piano examination result by post, "a lightbulb moment” in which he realised what he wanted to do with his life. He also describes his parents' grief after the death of his baby sister, which led to the Pappano family moving to Connecticut, where Antonio continued his musical tuition under a local piano teacher called Norma Verrilli and composer Arnold Franchetti. His professional career was nurtured by conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim who employed Pappano as his assistant for six years, a period in which he learned the art of conducting. He also looks back at his 22 years leading the Royal Opera at Covent Garden and talks candidly of his concerns about the funding and championing of opera in the UK.Producer: Edwina PitmanMusic and archive:Puccini, Turandot, Act 1 Ah! per l'ultima volta! Opening Song: What He's Done (https://open.spotify.com/track/2pxyd0ly9E5TEObwOvkedv?si=e3a4786b04684283) by Anna Golden, Jacob Sooter, Kristian Stanfill, and Tasha Cobbs Leonard Lyrics: See on the hill of Calvary My Savior bled for me My Jesus set me free Look at the wounds that give me life Grace flowing from His side No greater sacrifice What He's done What He's done All the glory and the honor to the Son My sins are forgiven My future is Heaven I praise God for what He's done Sing for the freedom He has won Even death is dead and done His life has overcome Speak say the Name above all names Over every broken place He is risen from the grave Now on a throne of majesty The Father's will complete He reigns in victory Sing hallelujah to the King He is worthy to receive All the worship we can bring Passage: After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham! ” “Here I am,” he answered. 2 “Take your son,” he said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” 3 So Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took with him two of his young men and his son Isaac. He split wood for a burnt offering and set out to go to the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there to worship; then we'll come back to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac. In his hand he took the fire and the knife, and the two of them walked on together. 7 Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.” And he replied, “Here I am, my son.” Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? ” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together. 9 When they arrived at the place that God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham! ” He replied, “Here I am.” 12 Then he said, “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your only son from me.” 13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14 And Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide, so today it is said, “It will be provided on the Lord's mountain.” -- Genesis 22:1-14 (CSB) Musical Reflection: “Air on the G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by J.S. Opening Song: O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. The Scripture for today is Let's prepare our hearts to hear from God's word as we listen to There Is A King by Brandon Lake, Steven Furtick, and Tiffany Hudson. This arrangement begins with a beautiful oboe solo, accompanied by guitar. The sustained instrumental tones fade away as the vocalist's replace them, singing about the events mentioned in Revelation. The woodwind interlude returns throughout the song, an apt accompaniment for the words “And every tear He'll wipe away…soon we will meet our Savior face to face.” Lyrics: There is a king seated among us Let every heart receive Him now Where there is praise He will inhabit There will be grace and mercy all around Every burden will be lifted in His presence Every trophy will be laid down at His feet There is a name that reigns above all others Jesus Christ the king above all kings Unto the lamb honor and glory Worthy is He who overcame Buried in shame risen in power He is alive the stone is rolled away All our worship will belong to Him forever Death is conquered and our Savior holds the keys There is a name that reigns above all others Jesus Christ the king above all kings It won't be long we will behold Him And every tear He'll wipe away We'll be at home the war will be over Soon we will meet our Savior face to face And all our worship will belong to You forever Holy holy for all eternity Yours is the name that reigns above all others Jesus Christ the king above all kings Jesus Christ the king above all kings Passage: 9 After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! 11 All the angels stood around the throne, and along with the elders and the four living creatures they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen. 13 Then one of the elders asked me, “Who are these people in white robes, and where did they come from?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” Then he told me: These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and they serve him day and night in his temple. The one seated on the throne will shelter them: 16 They will no longer hunger; they will no longer thirst; the sun will no longer strike them, nor will any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb who is at the center of the throne will shepherd them; he will guide them to springs of the waters of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (Revelation 7:9-17 CSB) Musical Reflection: “Air on the G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: The slow, descending bass line creates musical “steps” in an elegant fashion while a suspended melody several octaves above creates a satisfying combination of sound registers. Prayer: To those who rule and lead us on the earth, you, sovereign Master, have given their authority and kingship—so marvelous that power of yours words fail to express—that seeing the glory and honor you have provided for them, we should be subject to their rule, not resisting your will. Grant them, Lord, the health, peace, concord and stability to use rightly the sovereignty you have bestowed on them. For you, King of heaven, you it is that give mortals glory, honor and power over what is on earth. Lord, make their counsels conform to what is good and pleasing to you, that using with reverence, peacefully, gently the power you have given them, they might find favor with you.

I've mentioned Ethel Smyth a few times in the past on this show. This is partly because of her music, and partly because she remains one of the most interesting people who ever lived. She was a composer of course, but she was also a conductor and an author, as well as a political activist. Specifically, she was a suffragette, fiercely advocating for the rights of women to vote in her home country of the UK. As a composer Smyth wrote dozens of works, all of which are starting to become better known as performers and administrators look to bring more music by female composers onto concert stages around the world. Smyth did not have it easy, constantly fighting for her place, battling conductors, other composers, and even her own father, all for the right to be a composer.  Today, after I introduce you to a bit more of Smyth's amazing biography, we're going to focus on her first orchestral work, her Serenade in D Major. This is a piece that certainly doesn't sound like a first orchestral piece, and it is full of all of the qualities that make Smyth's music so enjoyable to listen to - lush warmth, humor, raucous intensity, and the quiet passion that runs through the music of so many great British composers. Smyth's Serenade in D is starting to be performed more, and I'm really proud to be using my own recording of the piece for the show today, which I made with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in 2021. It is only the second professional recording of the piece, and the recording has just been released on Claves Records. So today, we're going to go through this wonderful piece and also spend some more time in the wild and unpredictable world of Dame Ethel Smyth. Join us!

SOMM RECORDINGS announces the first volume of Prokofiev Milestones, featuring three characterful sonatas and a sparkling arrangement of music from Romeo and Juliet performed by violinist Lana Trotovšek and flutist Boris Bizjak accompanied by Maria Canyigueral on piano.Prokofiev Milestones revealingly turns the focus away from the prolific composer's famed orchestral works and celebrated ballets to his rich and varied chamber music.First performed in 1943, the Sonata for Flute and Piano (Op.94) is, as Robert Matthew-Walker comments in his notes, “music not of war, but of peace”; a pastoral escape laced with wit and mischief vouchsafed within a pristine neo-classical frame. It is heard again, transformed, in Prokofiev's transcription for Violin and Piano (Op.94a). Composed soon after, it lays claim to being “one of the finest 20th-century works in the genre and a genuine masterpiece”.The Sonata for Two Violins (Op.56) is heard in a new arrangement by Boris Bizjak that eloquently makes much of its sentimentality, drama, and vitality.A characterful suite drawn from Romeo and Juliet, and arranged for violin and piano by Lidia Baich and Matthias Fletzberger, revels in Shakespeare's great romance and Prokofiev's ardent response to it.TracksSonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 (24:15) I. Moderato (8:06) II. Scherzo: Presto (5:09) III. Andante (3:49) IV. Allegro con brio (7:10) Sonata for Two Violins in C Major, Op. 56 (arr. Boris Bizjak for flute and violin) (14:40) I. Opening Song: To the Cross I Cling (https://open.spotify.com/track/4dDaRw02WdySqYTjSw8ky8?si=1f48ce0be291488f) by Isaac Wimberley, Matt Bosswell, and Michael Bleecker Lyrics: No day of my life has passed that has not proved Me guilty in Your sight The best I have to offer are these filthy rags Yet You love me All things in me call for my rejection All things in You plead my acceptance I am guilty but pardoned By grace I've been set free I am ransomed through the blood You shed for me I was dead in my transgressions But life You brought to me I am reconciled through mercy To the cross I cling To the cross I cling No more am I A slave to sin but bought with a price Redemption that was purchased Through the blessed cross That You bore for me You bore for me Passage: 9 Don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God's kingdom? Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, or males who have sex with males, 10 no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God's kingdom. 11 And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 12“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything. 13“Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will do away with both of them. However, the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 15 Don't you know that your bodies are a part of Christ's body? So should I take a part of Christ's body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not! 16 Don't you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh. 17 But anyone joined to the Lord is one spirit with him. 18 Flee sexual immorality! Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the person who is sexually immoral sins against his own body. 19 Don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought at a price. So glorify God with your body. -- 1 Corinthians 6:9-20 (CSB) Musical Reflection: “Air on the G String” from Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes: The slow, descending bass line creates musical “steps” in an elegant fashion while a suspended melody several octaves above creates a satisfying combination of sound registers. Prayer: Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
