On the morning of July 4, 1910, thousands of boxing fans stormed a newly built stadium in Reno, Nevada, to witness an epic showdown. Jack Johnson, the world's first Black heavyweight champion―and most infamous athlete in the world because of his race―was paired against Jim Jeffries, a former heavyweight champion then heralded as the “great white hope.” It was the height of the Jim Crow era, and spectators were eager for Jeffries to restore the racial hierarchy that Johnson had pummeled with his quick fists.Fantom Comics and Pop Culture Uncovered proudly present another installment in the Black Excellence Book Club series.A groundbreaking graphic portrait of boxing legend Jack Johnson, Last On His Feet offers a front-row seat to the Battle of the Century.

We've talked about bookstores and comics stores before on Graphic Novel TK -- in fact, in our two episodes immediately prior to this! But how are bookstores and comics stores different? Are all their differences encompassed by the fact that one has books and comics and the other just comics? Or are there things that are different about the way they're structured and the way they operate? We talked today to Jake Shapiro, who has worked at both NYC's The Strand and DC's Fantom Comics, about what exactly goes on behind the scenes in bookstores and comics stores. How are the comics organized? How are displays made? How do they attract people in the door? How do events get put together? How do they do social media? You can find all the answers in this episode. You can find more about The Strand (https://www.strandbooks.com) and about Fantom Comics (https://www.fantomcomics.com) at the links. And Jake is on Twitter as @jake_shapiro
This episode is sponsored by Jordandene. Even though it's four hours away, Fantom Comics was the first local comic book shop that felt like home to me. Raven Smith was one of the first people I met there, and I'm so glad to talk to her about all things comics! Fantom Comics is a really special place that hosts all kinds of incredible events. They have trivia nights, book clubs, signings, and tons of other themed parties. They even run a kid's convention once a year! Raven has two really great pieces of advice for new comic readers. One, never be afraid to go into a comic book shop. If anyone there tries to quiz you or makes you feel like you don't belong, that's not a shop you want to hang out in anyway. And two, if you're looking for new comics to read, think about your favorite TV show or movie. That should be a great way for shop owners to recommend a series you might love! If you live in/near or plan to visit the D.C. area, please stop by Fantom Comics at 2010 P St NW, Washington, DC. You can also check them out everywhere online @FantomComics. Special guest Raven joins us from Fantom Comics in D.C. to talk about a movie that misses the mark when it comes to blockbuster superhero action. Listen in as we talk about car theft, diners that house secret bases, and a President willing to kick some ass in the name of environmentalism. Raven also helps us try to reconcile this film's plot with the actual backstory of the comic book characters it depicts. If you're wondering "do they succeed?" my answer is: Is the Red Skull Italian?
