When he was 7 years old, a friend's father was in the entertainment business. Hanging out at rehearsals and on the tour buses sold Matt on the idea of being a musician, or at the very least, a drummer. All this lead to spending his high school years at Fort Hayes vocational school for music and Capital University Conservatory of Music for college studying under drum instructor Bob Breithaupt. The musical diversity in Columbus gave Matt the chance to play with many great players and learning many different styles – from Big Band (Vaughn Weister's Famous Jazz Orchestra) and Brazilian to Afro-Cuban and Fusion. All the while, he was doing his share of gigs with original rock bands and top 40 bands. Matt moved to Nashville in the summer of 1999. Working as a freelance drummer based in Nashville has taken him to all 50 states in the U.S. and most of Canada, as well as overseas to Europe, Asia, The Middle East and The Caribbean. As well as the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Matt has performed in great local venues like the Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge, 3rd and Lindsley, The 5 Spot, The Sutler, The Basement, The Wildhorse Saloon, and many clubs on lower Broadway.  Matt has toured both regionally and nationally, with the Adam and Shannon Wright, Mark Selby, Eddy Raven, Billy Dean, Stephen Simmons, Three Lane, Whiskey Cash & Roses, Michelle Wright - (throughout Canada), Julie Roberts, and The Frontmen of Country which is Larry Stewart of Restless Heart, Richie McDonald of Lonestar, Tim Rushlow of Little Texas. From 2009 to 2017 Matt was the full time drummer for the band Savannah Jack. He played percussion on their first studio record in 2010 opposite Steve Ferrone on drums. For their second studio record in 2015, Matt was the drumset and percussion player in the studio. In the studio, Matt has had the pleasure of working with talented producers including Eric Fritsch, Teddy Morgan, Jim Reilley and Brent Maher. Artist he's recorded with in the studio have included Sheryl Crow, legendary songwriter Buzz Cason and actor Kevin Costner. In 2015, Matt started a podcast for drummers called "Working Drummer", an interview based podcast that maintains a focus on the drummer that makes a living at his or her craft. Along with the help of co-host Zack Albetta, the podcast has a growing audience throughout the world with more listeners every week. www.workingdrummer.net   *******SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW!!! www.richredmond.com/listen     The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success. Shannon Wright is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Atlanta, Georgia. Her eleventh album, Reservoir of Love, will be released on February 7 via Vicious Circle, with the lead single, Reservoir of Love, out now. Longtime friends and touring comrades, Joe and Shannon discuss Shannon's upbringing in Jacksonville, Florida, where seeing the band Pylon gave here the confidence to play music, her grandmother took her record shopping and she bought her first instrument, a hideous and pokey “metal bass”. Shannon shares her story of a life-threatening health scare, why it changed her outlook on her own life's freedom, and how the experience found itself on the new record. She explains how the writing and recording process on Reservoir of Love was different from other records, why she led with drums and bass on a couple songs how her experience with dance influences her writing. We hear about Shannon's experience scoring Les Confins Du Monde-To the Ends of the World and we hear a couple tunes.  Shannon Wright Vicious Circle Episode supported by Izotope Ep supported by our friends @izotope. In this episode of the SCBWI Podcast, we are joined by Varian Johnson!Varian was born in 1977, and grew up in the thriving metropolis of Florence, SC (population 30,248—2000 Census). He has a twin brother and a younger sister, and his parents, unlike many of his characters, were actually pretty good in the parenting department.Varian excelled in many subjects while growing up, specifically math and science. He was the typical high school “geek”—he played the baritone in marching band, was a member of the Wilson High School Academic Challenge Team, and he counted his Hewlett-Packard 48G calculator as one of his most prized possessions. However, Varian also enjoyed English—especially creative writing. After writing novels for older readers, Varian began writing middle grade novels. His caper novel, The Great Greene Heist, is his first work for younger readers. It was recently named a Publishers Weekly Best Summer Book of 2014. Kirkus praised the novel in a starred review, stating, “The elaborate bait and switch of this fast-paced, funny caper novel will surprise its readers as much as the victims. They'll want to reread immediately so they can admire the setup.”Varian's puzzle mystery, The Parker Inheritance, has been called The Westing Game meets The Watsons Go To Birmingham—1963. The Parker Inheritance, released in 2018, reviewed starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, School Library Journal, Horn Book, and the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, and was named a 2019 Coretta Scott King Honor Book and a 2018 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award Honor Book among other accolades.Twins, illustrated by Shannon Wright, is Varian's debut graphic novel. It received five starred reviews, and was named an NPR best book, and a Washing Post Best Children's Book, and a Texas Library Association Little Maverick Reading List Selection among other accolades.Varian loves traveling around the world (seriously, the world!) talking about writing and books. With each pregnancy, Shannon experienced different challenges and during her fourth and last one, she had a lot of anxiety. It was unexplained. She had a constant underlying anxiety regardless of the baby doing great and no big life circumstances. She talked with her husband, doctor and God and took medication for a short time for postpartum, which really helped. The day she came home from the hospital with her fourth child, Covid started and we were all in quarantine. Then, her sister unexpectedly passed away right after that and she had a peace that surpassed her understanding. Shannon went from having anxiety for at least 10 months to extreme peace during a time of life, when most of the world didn't have peace.  In this episode, you will hear: Shannon's story of helping others find peace and purpose among the trials All about collagen - that inhibits fat storage, improves muscle tone, restores youthful skin A lesson Shannon is learning in motherhood right now How to take control of your health and get in your best shape More about the Host - Dr. Karin Jakubowski is an elementary public school principal and certified life coach. At only twenty-seven, our guest Shannon Wright has already had one helluva career. Shannon's work has been featured by outlets like NPR, The Nib, and the New York Times. She's illustrated several successful children's books, and her debut graphic novel, Twins, a collaboration with Varian Johnson, was released in 2020. In this interview, Shannon breaks down how she got to where she is today, describing the different support systems and mentors that helped her along the way. She talks about her mission to pay it forward and be a guide for other young illustrators. Shannon also describes the pressure she feels to brand herself and constantly produce content in order to stay relevant, a feeling many creatives can relate to. She explains how she learned to embrace all aspects of her personhood, and not focus solely on the work. In a similar vein, Shannon opens up about being pigeonholed, particularly as a Black creator whose work frequently focuses on social justice issues, and the importance of saying no to work that doesn't support her mental health or is at odds with her intuition. More from the episode… Shannon explains how she generates most of her income as a full-time freelancer, and what she hopes her workload looks like in the future. Shannon talks about the motive behind her the “Super Condensed Zine: Portfolios, Websites, Pitching & Agents!” and why it's important to empower other creators. “You don't have to say yes to every opportunity that comes your way just because it's there” — Shannon talks about how she handled the sudden interest in her work during the summer of 2020. What was the big mistake Shannon thought would get her permanently exiled from publishing, and why wasn't it half as bad as she thought? Shannon reflects on a time when her dedication to the work drove her to isolation, and what it took for her to finally see the light. How did Shannon restructure her work days, and build habits that encouraged her to rest and recharge? A conversation about Shannon's family reveals ways non-artists in your life can support you, even if your work is a mystery to them. More from Shannon Wright Shannon Wright is an illustrator and cartoonist based out of Richmond, Virginia. Some of her clients include The Guardian, TIME Magazine, The Nib, NY Times, Mother Jones, NPR, Google and Scholastic. 2020 and 2021 have been a very strange time in publishing -- a time when the way that publishing a book works has changed rapidly and in unexpected ways. At the start of 2020, the expectation was the year would proceed as usual -- and then only months later, as covid spread, authors and publishers scrambled to adjust plans as everything that would've been in-person shut down. In this interview, we talked to Shannon Wright about her experience with publishing a book during covid. Shannon's first graphic novel, Twins, came out in October 2020, and she and her publisher, Scholastic Graphix were changing and adjusting plans and processes as 2020 unfolded. In this episode, author Varian Johnson and illustrator Shannon Wright talk about Twins, their new graphic novel for middle-graders. The story centers around Maureen and Francine Carter, twin sisters who are growing up—and growing apart as they enter middle school. The Carter sisters also happen to be Black. “Writing the girls in this way, where there's not a big trauma arc, was a very intentional choice,” Varian says. “It's almost like a political act.” Varian has written several critically-acclaimed novels, including The Great Greene Heist and The Parker Inheritance, which was named a Coretta Scott King Honor Book in 2019. He and Shannon describe the experience of creating their first graphic novel together and why they think Twins is such a hit with young readers. About the Episode: Psychics, mediums, intuitives… oh my! On today's episode, we're exploring our connection with ‘the other side'. Loaded topic – get ready for a super interesting conversation. My guest today, Shannon Wright, doesn't identify with the title ‘Psychic', due to the connotations associated with it, but she does feel her abilities most closely resemble those of a  ‘Medium'. ‘Mediums' are traditionally known to be a channel (or medium) to the spirits of those who once lived. Because of Shannon's affable nature, I have recently taken to calling her the ‘Happy Medium', a title she hasn't outright rejected but one that makes her giggle with slight embarrassment. She is not someone who has been looking for a big platform for her work, she is happy with her life exactly as it is and is extremely present- I always describe her and her husband, Gaz, as ‘the real deal'. Having said that, Shannon and Gaz, who is also in this type of work, have recently been called to begin sharing their gifts on a broader scale. Recording this podcast episode was a big step for Shannon as she has never ‘gone public' with her Mediumship. So far, all of her clients have come to her through word of mouth. While Shannon says that she hasn't received a lot of resistance to her work as she's kept it quite quiet, I am aware that there are people who do not align with the idea that our spirits can leave our physical bodies after our time on earth has expired- let alone that there are people on this planet who have tapped into their capabilities to communicate with those spirits. It can open up a BIG can of worms. But while there are many people who are resistant to these beliefs, I have also encountered many who are Medium-curious. I've heard questions like; How does it work? What makes a ‘good' medium? Does everyone have intuitive abilities? (According to Shannon, the answer to the final question is a resounding ‘yes'!). This episode Is for you if you want to better understand Mediums and their process. It will definitely help you to see this work in a new light while empowering you to tap into your own intuition! About Shannon Wright: Shannon Wright has always been an avid traveller and it was during her time exploring New Zealand in her camper van with her adopted dog, Jane, that Shannon Wright met the love of her life, Gareth (Gaz), who helped her to open up her deeper understanding of herself and what this existence is really all about.  She felt their meeting to be a universal realignment to help her realize what it was she was seeking. A deeper connection and understanding of what is. Over the following years of personal development, yoga, meditation, and pregnancy/new motherhood she began to unfold what she realized was a connection to her soul self and the spiritual realm within which we live.  She has been expanding her understanding of this innate human ability to speak with spirit /passed loved ones. She believes being connected to spirit is something we are all capable of doing, it is just a matter of bringing ourselves back to it.  Key Takeaways:We are all capable of uncovering our intuitive abilities – and many of us even have ‘guides' that want to support us on this journey through lifeNo two Mediums are the same – and thus, no two readings will ever be the same as all messages are interpreted differently by the Medium and client We can start our journey to strengthening our intuition by leading a heart-centered life.Links:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_fabric_of_being/Email: thefabricofbeing@gmail.com Resources:Book a Reading with
