Episode 948 - Jason Interviews Melissa F. Olson - Archaic - Ahoy ComicsThis modern-day action-adventure follows the newest residents of a sentient island populated by the gods and monsters of dead civilizations: a harried single mom and her three kids. From writer Melissa F. Olson (Project: Cryptid, Dead Spots), artist Sally Cantirino (I Walk With Monsters), and colorist Gab Contreras (Witchblood), the fast-paced mystery explores what happens to legends once the world no longer has use for them. After Tess Halliday's crooked ex-husband steals from some bad people, Tess is off-grid in snowy Chicago with her teenage stepson Teo and ten-year-old twins Audrey and Liam. Then life-changing news arrives on the doorstep: The biological father she never met has left Tess a tiny coastal island off North Carolina called Demonde, which includes a mansion and trust — and a guarantee that Tess and her family will have complete safety. Tess is grateful for a temporary escape to sunnier shores — but the island has her own plans for the Hallidays, and they don't include sunbathing. After the mysterious death of Tess's father Phillip, the sentient, controlling Demonde needs a human trustee to deal with the resident frustrated gods and squabbling legends. Now that she's here, Tess is bound by blood to stay forever…at least according to the island's two-faced (literally) butler and the local goddess of the dead. Caught between a sentient rock and a criminal hard place, Tess and the kids race to find Phillip's killer and understand their place on an island of retired magicLike & Subscribe on Youtube www.youtube.com/@comicsforfunandprofit5331Patreon https://www.patreon.com/comicsfunprofit Merch https://comicsfunprofit.threadless.comYour Support Keeps Our Show Going On Our Way to a Thousand EpisodesDonate Here https://bit.ly/36s7YeLAll the C4FaP links you could ever need https://beacons.ai/comicsfunprofit Listen To the Episode Here: https://comcsforfunandprofit.podomatic.com/

Hey, you. Stop doom scrolling. You've landed where you belong. Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors return to Comic Book Couples Counseling with another Justice Warriors book, Vote Harder. And they're back just when we need them most, weeks away from a critical, very American election. As in the best romantic comedies, Swamp Cop and Officer Schitt are torn apart early on in Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. Bubble City embarks on its first-ever election, and it's doing something strange to its populace. They're trapped with a ballot George Orwell wouldn't wish on his most hated dystopia, and the city's most horrendous Bad Boys are the only ones who can save the day. Best of luck, citizens. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is another vicious satire skewering contemporary society while highlighting the damned, nothing-new, never-ending cycle of corruption. Do you think your hell is the most hell that's ever hell'ed? Nah. It's the same old hell. It's only new to you. Eagerly, we lean into Ben Clarkson and Matt Bors, trying to discern any wisdom they've gained by plunging themselves into the world of Justice Warriors: Vote Harder. We continue to explore satire's purpose, why two dumb protagonists are the heroes we deserve, and how The Matrix Reloaded deserves a second viewing, if not a third, fourth, and fifth. Justice Warriors: Vote Harder is now available in trade paperback from Ahoy Comics. Follow Matt Bors on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. I hope you're ready for another great doubleheader episode, this time beginning with Ahoy Comics' new Toxic Avenger mini-series creators Matt Bors and Fred Harper, then concluding with Danny Hellman from Jacked Tracts, which is crowdfunding on Zoop.gg! The episode starts with my fun interview with writer Matt Bors, returning to the podcast, and first-timer artist Fred Harper. They're bringing a new take on Toxic Avenger, which is being described this way: “It's an all-new 5-issue comic book series starring THE TOXIC AVENGER, the satirical hero of the Troma Films cult classic films. Having already spawned five films, a cartoon, action figures, a musical, and a Marvel comic book series, the Toxic Avenger is a pop culture icon.” We talk about how this new mini-series came to be, who the characters are, and what we can expect from these two creators in the months ahead! The first issue has just been released, so be sure to check with your local comics shop, who can order the books for you if they don't already have a copy in stock! Then everything wraps up with my excellent conversation with Jacked Tracts creator Danny Hellman, who has this current crowdfunding project underway with Zoop.gg. Here's the description: “Jacked Tracts is a spirited satire of those notorious Christian comic tracts that thrilled and traumatized American kids throughout the late 20th Century. Its rollicking re-examination of these comics from a contemporary perspective is sure to delight believers and heathens alike!” Danny discusses how this book came to be, who the characters and creators are, and what else he has coming soon! Be sure to back this already successful crowdfunder before it concludes on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson return to the podcast to discuss Justice Warriors: Vote Harder from Ahoy Comics. But first, has it been 100 episodes since we last spoke to Matt and Ben? How old is everyone's kids? Is this comic dumb in a good way? How is this comic connected to 9/11? Is there an overall message the comic is trying to convey? Was Vote Harder only released as a trade? Has Justice Warriors predicted the future multiple times? Is P. Diddy a fall guy? Is there a secret conspiracy hidden within the comic? Would Ben make a great Riddler? Are we fans of zaniness? What are some of our favorite gags in the comic? What is The Great Popping Off? Do pneumatic tubes still exist? Is this the most political comic out this year? Was Robocop and Starship Troopers a big include on Justice Warriors? Is the Akira slide in this comic? How did they get H. Jon Benjamin for the Vote Harder trailer? How deep can Ben go on 9/11? How do we feel about Yellowstone? What hopes do they have to take Justice Warriors to the world of animation? What other potential plots for future volumes do they have in mind? What are the Meatball Riots? Will there ever be Justice Warrior one-shots and mini-series? Are Schitt's kids terrifying? Are the characters lovable even though they aren't necessarily good or self aware? Was this a compelling read for us? Could we predict the outcome of Bubble City's election? Did the comic end on a positive note? Do we feel bad for liking cops in media like The Wire? Is Justice Warriors officially greenlit for a third volume? What can we expect from Matt Bor's new Toxic Avenger series from Ahoy? Does Matt have a thing for mutants, especially the ugly and weird ones? What mainstream comic series would Matt and Ben like to work on? What is Planet Gun? Should Swamp and Schitt become space cops? Do we like volume 2 of Justice Warriors more than vol. 1? Would Justice Warriors make a great Adult Swim series? Would we sell out for Marvel money? And will Vote Harder get the highly coveted 666 Pesci rating? What would Swamp and Schitt's Mortal Kombat fatalities be? Is Justice Warriors relevant in the dumbest ways? Find out the answers to these and more on the newest episode of Comics and Chronic! On today's episode, I talk to Eisner-winning comics editor and two time Pulitzer Prize Finalist in cartooning Matt Bors. Originally from Canton, Ohio, Matt attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he first began drawing editorial cartoons for the student newspaper. At 23, his work became syndicated by Universal Features, making him the youngest syndicated cartoonist in the country at that time. Since then, his comics have appeared in The Nation, The Guardian, Village Voice, CNN, The Intercept, and were collected in the book We Should Improve Society Somewhat. In 2013, Matt founded the wonderful political comics site The Nib and ran it until it ceased operating in 2023. Most recently, Matt created the fantastic dystopian satire Justice Warriors with Ben Clarkson and is writing an upcoming Toxic Avenger series for Ahoy Comics. The two entertaining interviews begin with Jerry Carita from The Grizzly Crew #1, then we wrap things up with Tyrone Finch from Ahoy Comics' upcoming Deadweights! Jerry's wonderful book The Grizzly Crew is being funded right now on Kickstarter. It's described this way: “A crew of pirate bears protects seaside villages from Captain Wolfheart and a fleet of evil scalawags!” We talk about the very important role Jerry's son Harlan plays in the making of this comic, who the various characters are, and what we can expect from Jerry in the months ahead! Be sure to back this project before it concludes on Wednesday, February 28, at 9:59 a.m. EST! Then everything wraps up with my engaging discussion with creator Tyrone Finch from Ahoy Comics' Deadweights, which is described as “a buddy comedy about two unlucky henchmen trying to make their way in the world.” We discuss who the characters are, what we might expect from this excellent miniseries, and what Tyrone has headed our way in the coming months!
