Show notes: On this episode I do an interview with Casey and Melissa Smith, the owners of the art store "Casey's Art Box". The shop is located out in Germantown, TN and combines retail space, gallery wall space, community gathering space, and Casey's art studio space. The dynamic duo are both former educators and have been together since the 1993 Cooper Young Festival. They've been married for almost 30 years. Casey Smith was born in Memphis and raised in Germantown. He has been creating art his whole life. His early years began at Ronnie Grisanti & Sons restaurant where he shared his love of murals. He spent 20 years teaching art to kindergarteners through high school seniors. Now Casey is ready to share his works and hopes to encourage other artists to go after their passion. Melissa Smith moved to Germantown at the beginning of her high school career at GHS. Not one to be far from her family, she attended Memphis State, but ended up graduating from the University of Memphis! While there she met and married Casey, being his number one visual art & music fan and (most importantly) best friend. After 27 years in elementary technology education, she is ready to encourage others to unleash their creative energies. The shop is open Mon-Sat, but are always standing by for any Sunday or after hours art emergencies that might arise! When you stop by be sure to ask about their customer loyalty program. I bought a few paint pens to try out.I also fill you in on some Mid-South Cartoonists Association news, including our upcoming art shows, zine deadline and monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza (April 1st), the MSCA Con Cards, and the Rogue's Gallery moving to Lootz Collectibles in Atoka for Free Comic Book Day.Plus I share some info on Comic Geek Speak's 20th anniversary celebration up in Reading, PA and recent Diamond acquisition by Alliance Entertainment. This week I dropped off a couple of my paintings for upcoming auctions/sales at Playhouse on the Square ("King Arthur/Spamalot") and Germantown Community Theatre ("Annie & Sandy"). Both were done in acrylics on canvas and for previous art shows at GCT. Proceeds to benefit the two theaters. I'll have new art to benefit my wallet at both theaters this year. Thanks to Casey and Melissa for talking toons with me. Hope this episode inspires you to check out their art store and create some art of your own!"Stay Tooned!"LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comCasey's Art Box (Germantown, TN) – www.caseysartbox.com/Garibaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comLootz Collectibles – www.lootzcollectibles.com/Rogue's Gallery Memphis – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/Free Comic Book Day – www.freecomicbookday.com/DeSoto Arts Council  – www.desotoartscouncil.org/Comic Geek Speak/CGS podcast – www.comicgeekspeak.com/Comic Book Central podcast – www.comicbookcentral.net/Theme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen.   News intro theme by David Fesliyan.©2020 Fesliyan Studios Inc. – music and sound effects used by permission. Please DO NOT add this audio content to the Youtube Content ID System. Show notes: On this episode I do a few interviews with some of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association members. I recorded at their March monthly dinner gathering at Garibaldi's Pizza- first I talked with That Katie Jones about The Rogue's Gallery at Centerpoint Toys & Games. and then I caught up with MSCA prez Kevin L. Williams about art goings on around the M-town, including a special "shocking" announcement of a new MSCA art show at Germantown Community Theatre. The MSCA meets at the Garibaldi's U of M location on the first Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm. The next gathering is on Tuesday, April 1st! The meet-ups are free and open to the public, but be sure to bring a few bucks to order off the menu and some art to show around. The following night after work I stopped by 901 Games to discuss Con Cards with the card game's creator (and longtime MSCA and NCS member), Greg Cravens. Greg can be found there on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm, and can be spotted at many local conventions selling Con Cards and teaching event attendees how to play the game. A new MSCA expansion deck is in the works! In the news section at the end of the episode I fill you in on some S/uper news about our long time friend Mike Norton's new "Krypto The Super-Dog" comic series and his recent Comic Geek Speak podcast appearance on episode 1997. Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton is set to debut on June 18, 2025 from DC Comics.I update you on my recent sketchcard gigs for RRParks Cards, and share some not so super news about me no longer working at 901 Comics. Yep, I was let go just a couple days after these interviews were recorded, so I'll be promoting 901 no more.Oh, speaking of sketchcards, don't forget that I have hand-drawn sketchcards for sale at The Cellar out on Bartlett Blvd. All cards are done in markers and are $35ea. More of my art is for sale at the DeSoto Arts Council in Hernando, MS.In this episode I also include a promo for the Comic Book Central podcast. The show's host Joe Stuber interviews actors, writers, producers, directors and others who have bring comic book properties to life on TV, Broadway, film, video games, live events and beyond!I honestly don't know what my next day job is going to be... so "Stay tooned!"LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comDrawing Funny Podcast on Spotify – www.podcasters.spotify.com/Drawing Funny Podcast on Apple – www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/drawing-funny/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA (Memphis, TN) – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMy art website – www.linworkman.comGaribaldi's Pizza (U of M) – www.garibaldispizza.comCenterpoint Toys & Games – www.facebook.com/CenterpointToys/Rogue's Gallery Memphis – www.roguesgallerymemphis.com/The Cellar Tabletop Games & Comics – www.comiccellaronline.com/Germantown Community Theatre – www.gctcomeplay.org/season-54-announcement/Playhouse On The Square  – www.playhouseonthesquare.org/Comic Geek Speak podcast – www.comicgeekspeak.com/Comic Book Central podcast – www.comicbookcentral.net/Memphis Public Libraries Comic Con 2025 – www.memphislibrary.org/events/mpl-comic-con-vendor-application/RRParks Cards – www.rrparkscards.com/Mike Norton – www.ihatemike.com/Greg Cravens – www.cravenscartoonist.com/#midsouthcartoonistsassociation#msca#memphistn#shairthelair#cgs#cartooning#supportlocal#linworkmanart#drawingfunnypodcast#drawingfunny#podcast#podperson#staytoonedTheme: “Silly Bank Heist” music by Steve Oxen.   News intro theme by David Fesliyan.©2020 Fesliyan Studios Inc. – music and sound effects used by permission. Please DO NOT add this audio content to the Youtube Content ID System. Follow Walter, B.B., and a cast of quirky characters as they navigate a zombie apocalypse in the heart of the Bluff City. In honor of the passing of Tim Sale, we here at Comic Geek Speak are digging into the archive once more. All the way back in 2006, the team of Bryan Deemer, Jamie D, Matt, Peter Rios and Shane gave us an in-depth look at Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Superman For All Seasons for the Book of the Month Club. And as we here in America celebrate our Independence Day, we could use some of the hope, joy, and light that this story brings forth, so it is extra fitting indeed to re-air this one. Here's to you, Tim, and thank you. (1:28:50)

Show notes: I'm solo again for this 40th episode. Lately I've seen a lot of comics creators online ask, "Where do I begin?" Well, "Just start making comics." seems like the most honest answer, but I know that there's a lot more to that question. I don't have all the answers, but I do share my my comics origin story and thoughts on creating comics. I offer up some advice, resources, cautionary tales, and more about making comics and getting them out there to readers. Lots of ways to make comics these days, and lots of ways to read comics, too. I've seen the pros and cons of doing cons. I don't offer any real advice on breaking into comics, because like writer/editor/publisher Mark Waid has said, "Breaking into comics is like breaking out of jail: once you find a way, that way is closed forever." It's different for everyone. I do however encourage making comics- and hope the info shared in this episode will help you not only avoid the pitfalls I did creating my own comics, but also enjoy similar positive experiences like I did. Looking back they far outweighed the negative. If you have any questions I didn't cover feel free to stop by one of the MSCA monthly dinner meetings at the U of M Garibaldi's Pizza (1st Tuesday of the month, 7pm), or drop me a line. If you'd like to share your experiences creating comics I'd love to have you on the show. Stay well, stay tooned, and keep drawing funny, good buddy! Listeners Chris Eberle from Wild Pig Comics, Shawn Pryor from Action Lab Entertainment, Jason Grice, Kyle Moyer and others join us in studio to celebrate. Hear about Jamie's trip to London, we debut the theme song for 'Muddle the Murd', Mike introduces his new segment, Bryan talks about the comic 'Z' that he worked on in the 90's, we have a very late Secret Santa gift exchange and questions from the Geeks to each other.
