Sheena

“See, even in chains we can defeat them. Turn your minds back my people. Remember yourself a thousand, thousand moons ago. Bring your bows!” All of this dialogue was spoken by a white woman in chains standing over an African tribe and that's really all you need to know about 1984's Sheena. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Sheena is a wild ride that made us ask why is the villain an African prince/celebrity/NFL kicker? Is that really how you pronounce shaman? And how unsafe was this set as clearly very real animals where running into very real people.  Guess what! That comic project Jordan has been talking about forever? It's finally on the way! Ancestral Recall will be in stores August 6th wherever you get your comics. It follows an eccentric painter who can tap into the power of historical Black figures and travels time and space to find his wife/fight a sentient AI corporation from the future. All very timely.  Also be on the lookout for our rescheduled book club and movie club soon. Is it only April? We hope everyone has been doing well and hanging in there. Hopefully today's episode will help up lift some spirits because we've got a fun one with 1995's Die Hard With a Vengeance. Not only was Jordan surprised to learn this is actually the third film in the series, but also that it could have also co-starred Laurence Fishburne instead of Sam Jackson.  It also lets us ask a lot of important questions like who was the first Black person to save the world on film and what if Simon Gruber asked questions only about Black history?  Our book club is starting up soon! Coming up on Sunday April 27th we'll be discussing Eve Ewing's Original Sin which explores the intentional failures of America's education system when it comes to Black and Indigenous children specifically. We'll be talk about it on our IG (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) and on our discord so be sure to join us on both.  We'll be back in two weeks with Academy award winner Adrian Brody in the very confusing Chinese blockbuster, Dragon Gate.

Oscar season might be over but that doesn't mean we still can't cover some Oscar bait. 2009's The Soloist that has all the makings of an awards season darling: two stars at the height of their power with Robert Downey Jr. an Jamie Foxx, an award winning director and screen writer and a sappy true story. And yet, it feels like a parody.  We discuss how cruelly this movie treats the unhoused community it seemingly wants to uplift, Jamie's crazy hairline and outfits, and how movies like this seek to win awards through Black pain.  Announcement: We are finally starting out book club this April! Our first book will be Eve Ewing's Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism. Never in the history of this show has a movie caught Jordan and Cameron so off guard. 1994's Just Cause isn't just a wildly racist movie, it actually thinks it's doing the work...until it decides the work is too hard and creates a cartoonishly villainous Black character with the craziest plan we've ever seen in a movie.  Starring Sean Connery, Laurence Fishburne, Blair Underwood, Ruby Dee, Scarlett Johansson, Ed Wood and somehow more, it follows all the usual twist and turns of your usual 90's thriller until it makes the hardest left turn into "actually this Black man is a psycho and the police were right to beat and castrate him." Yes, you read that right.  Anyways, we're chugging along and getting ready to launch our book and film clubs coming up this month. Anyways, this movie almost feels like a spiritual prequel to another movie we've done, Rebel Ridge, as this time it's Don Johnson going after white supremacist. You can almost imagine his character retiring to the south and becoming a small time racist sheriff if you squint.  We talk about the bait and switch trailer, the choice to set this at Christmas, and if we can properly rank caucacity anymore given that it's at its peak almost daily now.  Happy Black History Month! Written and directed by Cord Jefferson, and starring Jeffery Wright, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander, and Traci Ellis Ross, it recently was nominated for 4 Academy Awards.  We talk about the amazing cast, our thoughts on the message of the movie, parallels to Bamboozled and 40 Year Old Version and much more!  Do yourself a favor and run out to see this movie, definitely lives up to the hype! Oooof! We swear we love Denzel, but this week we travel back to look at his very first movie, 1981's Carbon Copy. Someone thought of white dad, Black son, and took the rest of the day off.  There's a million things wrong with this movie, but most of all it's the waste of Denzel. We discuss the tired gags, how the director of Coolie High could have been behind this, and much more!  Also, don't think we let Nikki "what was the Civil War" Haley off the hook either.  As always, hit us up on Twitter at @white_pod or message us at whitepeoplewontsaveyou@gmail.com  We'll be back in two weeks talking about a good movie for a change as we discuss American Fiction.

Happy Holidays everyone! As we do this time of year, we welcome our sisters Carmen and Kemet to join us on the show. Our selection this year, the controversial 1982 film, White Dog.  Directed by Samuel Fuller and shelved by Paramount before it was even released, the film follows a racist dog who goes on a rampage, and we have questions. Like what the audition process was like for the Black people getting attacked by dogs. Also, why did they care more about curing the dog than...I don't know, the multiple people the dog kills? We can't believe we're already at the end of 2023. So much love and gratitude to all of our wonderful listeners who supported us through this year. We love you and we hope you take some time to be around those you love to close the year. We've got some big things in store for 2024, so stay tuned!

We're so thrilled to be joined by Joel Robinson, a member of the Osage Nation, and professor of Native American and global indigenous media studies, Joanna Hearne, to discuss the current state of Native representation in media.  It's an incredible conversation that covers Killers of the Flower Moon, Reservation Dogs, some film history, and tons of great recommendations to watch.  We're super grateful to both Joel and Joanna for joining us! Check out Joel's piece for Slate on Killers of the Flower Moon here, and find Joanna's books here and here.  We also wanted to make as many resources available as possible so check out our Google Doc that has a list of the films recommended as well as some books and more! As the Holiday season starts up, we turn towards a classic, and one we've been low-key avoiding. But the time has finally come for us to watch one of the craziest movies we've seen so far, 1964's Black Like Me.   We're joined by friend of the show Dare Johnson to talk about a movie where a white man pretends to be Black to see "what it's like." If that wasn't bad enough, it's based on a real experiment done by journalist John Howard Griffin.  We've got a lot to talk about with this one, including how not one Black person called him out for obviously being a white man, how no Black person knew he was a white man, and how not one damn Black person said, "ain't you a white man"?  As we get ready to close out 2023, we just want to say how much we appreciate you all and we hope you're able to wind down and spend some quality time with those you love. Times are rough, so be sure to hold on to the good things.  You can find Dare @badicaldude, and hit us up at @white_pod on Twitter and at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com to let us know what you thought of this one and what we should watch in 2024. Ladies and gentlemen, 2021's Karen.       Wait...you need us to say more? Well, in honor of the spooky season, we subjected ourselves to one of the most absurd movies we've watched yet. Cameron and Jordan discuss what the hell everyone involved was thinking, the Get Out effect on Black horror, and a Cee-Lo Green song so bad it makes us long for Taylor Swift's cover of September.  With all the uncertainty in the world, hope everyone is doing alright out there. Hello! Although we're still taking it easy for the summer, we couldn't let a white savior movie this blatant pass us by. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (yes you have to say the whole thing) is the story of a soldier so racked by guilt after his Afghan translator saves his life, that he goes back guns blazing to bring him and his family to America. It's the grounded and subtle storytelling Guy Ritchie is known for.  Jordan sat down with culture critic and podcast host Murtada Elfadl (The Izzy and Murtada Picture Show) to discuss just how crazy it is that Dar Salim's character dragged Jake Gyllenhaal 62 miles on foot, how the hell you make an apolitical movie about Afghanistan, and much more.  You can find Murtada on Twitter at @ME_Says and read his work all over at places like AV Club and Variety. So in the interest of not burning out and keeping things going, we'll be taking a little summer break.  DON'T PANIC What this means is there won't be any regular episodes as you know them in June and July, but that doesn't mean we're ghosting you. Jordan will be around with some guests to talk about some white savior films coming out this summer, including Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, as well as non white savior movies like Into the Spider-Verse 2 and The Little Mermaid.  We'll also be doing some live watches (more info once we figure out where and when) and we'll try to have some more fun surprises in the interim.  So one more time, no need to panic.
