Listen to our talk with artist Tina Stefanou, curator Elyse Goldfinch (and special guests) on her new exhibition 'You Can't See Speed'. This podcast was recorded as part of an Artist Talk at ACCA on Saturday 05 April 2025. 'Tina Stefanou: You Can't See Speed' attends to the interconnected and multisensory experience of film beyond vision. The exhibition continues Stefanou's interest in the voice as medium, from spoken sonic soundscapes to vocal techniques such as humming. It also expands on her methodology of deep, long-term, co-creative collaboration and socially engaged practice involving interspecies-communal-performance making. Her diasporic, working-class ethic and approach to making challenges institutions of power and capitalistic logics, embedding the commons – from the planetary to the everyday – within her life and work. From Jan 2024. Dive into the provocative world of artistic "theft" as Ty and Nathan explore how creative innovation truly emerges from our influences. This conversation challenges the myth of pure originality, arguing instead that the greatest artists throughout history have been masterful collectors and transformers of ideas.Beginning with Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto's transformative quote—"Start copying what you love... at the end of the copy you will find yourself"—the duo examines how creative development flourishes through strategic borrowing. From Quentin Tarantino's open acknowledgment of film references to David Bowie's musical influences, the most distinctive voices often emerge from those who've absorbed the most diverse inspirations. They unpack wisdom from creative legends including Jim Jarmusch, Paul Schrader, and Jean-Luc Godard, who all emphasize that true originality lies not in where you take ideas from, but where you take them to. Art movements throughout history—from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism—evolved through artists stealing ideas from each other while working side by side, proving that innovation rarely emerges in isolation. What distinguishes mere imitation from transformative theft? When does copying become finding your voice? The conversation offers practical advice for artists at every stage: diversify your influences, document what moves you and why, maintain an "omnivorous" approach to inspiration, and create systems to capture ideas when they strike. Ultimately, the episode makes a compelling case that the most authentic artistic expression comes not from avoiding influence, but from embracing it wholeheartedly.Follow us on Instagram @ty_nathan_clark and @nathanturborg to continue exploring how creative influences shape artistic development.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg
Have you ever wondered what exactly an artist residency is and whether it might be the missing piece in your creative journey? In this comprehensive guide, Ty Nathan Clark takes you through everything you need to know about these transformative opportunities.Artist residencies aren't just retreats—they're powerful creative accelerators that provide dedicated time, space, and freedom to focus exclusively on your work. From rural sanctuaries nestled in nature to dynamic urban studios, these programs offer artists the chance to step away from daily distractions and immerse themselves in their practice. The benefits extend far beyond a change of scenery. Residencies foster creative growth through uninterrupted studio time, expose you to new perspectives in unfamiliar environments, build valuable professional networks, provide access to specialized equipment and mentorship, and can significantly enhance your artistic credibility. As one resident reflected, "I left with the certainty that I'm an artist with a commitment to the creative life that I've never since questioned."Finding the right residency requires understanding what you need. Do you crave rural peace or urban energy? Are you seeking community or solitude? Can you self-fund, or do you need financial support? This episode is a replay from Dec 28th 2023. Just Make Art will be back with a brand new episode on March 20th.What happens when an artist truly understands their medium? For Robert Rauschenberg, that's precisely when it was time to stop and move on. His philosophy—"I usually work in a direction until I know how to do it. Then I stop. At the time I am bored, or understand, and I use those words interchangeably"—serves as the launching point for a deep dive into artistic evolution and the creative mindset.Ty Nathan Clark and Nathan Terborg unpack Rauschenberg's approach to creativity, exploring how his constant medium-shifting—from painting to sculpture, printmaking to performance—wasn't merely restlessness but a deliberate artistic strategy. They examine his famous "combines" that incorporated everyday objects and trash, born initially from economic necessity but evolving into a revolutionary artistic approach that bridged the gap between art and life. The conversation takes fascinating turns through the concept of the "beginner's mind," the documentation of creative processes, and the tension between commercial success and artistic growth. Particularly compelling is their discussion about creating opportunities in today's art landscape—from organizing house shows to leveraging digital platforms—that echoes Rauschenberg's resourceful spirit.Whether you're a working artist feeling stagnant in your current practice, or someone curious about the artistic mindset, this episode offers both philosophical insights and practical takeaways about embracing boredom as a creative signal, following your curiosity, and maintaining that crucial sense of wonder throughout your creative journey. Ready to transform your approach to making art? Listen now and discover why sometimes understanding something completely is your cue to move on to the next exciting possibility.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

Join us as we wrap up our exploration of "Art and Fear," where we uncover the tumultuous yet exhilarating path artists navigate. We dive into the artist's struggle and the high cost of idealism, emphasizing the need for lifelong learning and self-education beyond the structured confines of art school. Uncover how embracing curiosity and self-education can prevent stagnation and nurture continuous artistic growth. As artists, are we just chasing shadows, or is there more to be gleaned from completed artworks? We explore the dynamic between artists and critics, sparking a debate on the utility of viewing finished works. By drawing insights from figures like Jerry Saltz, we discuss the contrasting views where artists see art as an ever-evolving process while critics often view it as a fixed entity. Henry James's questions for evaluating art prompt us to reflect on the value and impact of artistic pursuits, urging artists to break free from traditional constraints and embrace the uncertainty that fuels true innovation and autonomy. Finally, we delve into the divine spark that drives creativity, encouraging artists to trust their instincts and make bold conceptual leaps. This journey requires leaving behind comfort zones to pursue greater expression, as exemplified by historical movements that challenged norms. By integrating life experiences into art, authenticity and persistence become central themes. Episode 187: Artist talk with Nassim Azarzar on “All Things Flow” (2023), “Bonne Route” (2018-present), and other projects Nassim Azarzar is an artist and graphic designer researching visual and popular imaginaries in Morocco by exploring their different forms, occurrences, and representation tools. In 2023, Azarzar took part in the project School of Casablanca, initiated by the KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin) and ThinkArt (Casablanca), which draws from the legacy of the Casablanca Art School and its innovative pedagogical methods, modernist aesthetics, and exhibition strategies in 1960s Morocco. During the early 1960s, a group of artists, including Belkahia, Chabâa, Hamidi, Maraini, and Melehi, joined the Casablanca Art School faculty and restructured its curriculum. They also formed a collective called the School of Casablanca and shared similar aesthetic and conceptual concerns. Azarar's installation, All Things Flow (2023), created a sonic and visual timeline of the Moroccan Modernist School of Casablanca group, inviting viewers into a meditative reflection on their history. Taking this work as a starting point for our conversation, in the podcast, we discuss various directions in Azarzar's practice and potential parallels between his practice and the works of artists from the School of Casablanca. Nassim Azarzar (@nazarzar) is an artist and graphic designer who lives and works between Paris and Rabat. For several years, he has been developing an ongoing project called «Bonne route» dealing with ornamental practices of trucks transporting goods between the port cities of Tangier, Casablanca, Agadir, and the Moroccan villages of the Atlas, and the Rif. Azarzar's aesthetic research revolves around decorative arts, painting, drawing, sculpture, graphic design, and experimental cinema. Before joining QANAT (a collective of artists and researchers exploring the political and poetic dimensions of water) in 2019, Azarzar co-founded and initiated multiple creative endeavors, among them: Atelier Superplus (@atelier_superplus), a design studio operating between Paris, Bristol, and Tangier in 2014; Think Tanger (@thinktanger), a platform dedicated to the exploration of the city of Tangier and its extensions at the urban and visual levels in 2016; and Atelier Kissaria (@tanger.print.club) in 2017 focused on experimental printing practices. This interview was led by Beya Othmani, CAORC/Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Modern Art History, and was recorded on January 7, 2024 via Zoom as part of the Modern Art in the Maghrib series. This is part of a larger Council of American Overseas Research Centers program organized by the Centre d'Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) and financed by the Andrew Mellon Foundation that seeks to collaborate with local institutions for a greater awareness of art historical research in north Africa. The intimacy of a personal journey weaves through this episode, with our special guest host who recounts a moment back in 2006 when a dream compelled them toward the canvas, marking the beginning of a lifelong passion. Their narrative strikes a chord with anyone who has discovered art's calling later in life, illustrating that it's never too late to reimagine your path. I mirror this sentiment, sharing the defining day I chose art over the corporate ladder, a reflection of my own quest for deeper meaning. Together, we celebrate these pivotal decisions—the courage to embrace a new chapter, the embrace of uncertainty, and the triumph of personal narrative in art's expressive tapestry. Embarking on a creative journey requires a leap of faith, something our recent guest, the captivating Eric Breish, knows all too well. Comedians don't usually headline the International Arts Center, but currently there's an exhibit on display that might make you think they do. The artist, Winfred Hawkins, blends dark humor with digital art and works on canvas. TROY Public Radio's Chris Ahlf paints the full picture. And, bird is the word this week! Thanks to restoration efforts at the arboretum, more than eight miles of trails have been cleared out, an outdoor classroom has been installed, and two new bridges have been built. And that's just pecking the surface, as Producer Brendan Bryan reports.
In this episode Lo has Candice artist and writer as guest and together they talk about the industry, dreams and the creative process of being an artist CANDICE https://www.instagram.com/finetobeweird/ LOLA https://lolawolff.com/

Are you struggling with harnessing your frustration into a source of creative fuel? As artists, we have been there too. We have found that by acknowledging these feelings, we can transform them into a powerful tool for our artistry. Let's embark on a journey centered around the words of renowned British artist, Sonia Boyce, and uncover the beauty of using frustration as inspiration. We believe that art has an innate power of expression, especially when it comes to giving voice to marginalized communities. Sonia Boyce's work beautifully encapsulates this idea, using various mediums to narrate stories of memory and family. We delve into our personal experiences and discuss how journaling, researching, and ideating can help channel frustrations into artistic inspiration. This transformation is a delicate balance between the maturity and immaturity involved in the creative process. Keeping a consistent creative routine can be challenging when faced with frustration, but it's crucial for success. We'll be sharing how this practice has influenced our work and how it could do the same for you. We end the episode with a call to action: go out, make art, and share it with us! Let's turn our frustrations into a source of inspiration and success in art together. Tune in, and let's get inspired!Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

The work of artist Don Hershman has returned to the walls of Salomon Arts Gallery in Tribeca, this time centered around the idea of code switching, which Hershman experienced as a gay man living in the American South in the 1980s while completing his medical residency. That's right, on top of being a fine artist, Hershman is also a trained doctor, and still works as a podiatric surgeon in San Francisco. The Art of Code Switching is on view through October 15, and 10% of the proceeds of the show's sales will be donated to The Trevor Project, which support suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ+ youth. EVENT: The gallery will be hosting an Artist Talk open to the public on October 12, when Hershman will be in conversation with Anthony Haden Guest.

What does the name “Drinking Partners Podcast” tell you? It's probably some guys who appreciate a stiff drink (and maybe T-Pain), chopping it up with guests. Now take “Artist Talk Mental Health”: this week's guest, Sydney Davis began to host gatherings especially for Black artists and creatives after recognizing so many of her artist friends struggling with their mental health. “It's giving an opportunity for artists to get up on a platform and be like, not only is this my art, but this is the story behind it,” she tells Ed and Day. ATMH prides itself on creating a safe space to allow vulnerability while fostering community, solidarity, and connecting artists with mental health resources. Davis is also the creator of Niplids: a line of nipple-printed hats, from which 20% of the proceeds go toward The Young Women's Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation. Right on! Guest: Sydney Davis of Artist Talk Mental Health and Niplids. Location: Emerald City, Pittsburgh. Produced by: Epicast.
